On this special episode of the Rodeo Labs Podcast, we sat down with Jacqueline Claudia and Michael White of the White Line Foundation to discuss how the organization has been championing key policy on the federal and state levels. Claudia is the Executive Director of the White Line, while White is the co-founder and the father of Magnus White, whose death in Boulder County in 2023 was the catalyst for the organization. In our conversation with Claudia and White, we focused on the major policy goals the White Line has been pushing at the federal and local levels that could have clear positive safety outcomes. HR 7353 is the proposed bill that the White Line has sponsored which amends existing federal regulations on Automatic Emergency Braking systems to mandate that all new vehicles have the capacity to detect vulnerable road users by September 2029. While this is a specific policy goal, it is the key culmination of a long, tragic process that began in August 2023 after a driver in Boulder County killed Magnus White. This policy would have prevented that fatal crash and has the capacity to alter the outcome of many future parallel path crashes.Additionally, the organization is advocating for a law in the Colorado state legislature, known as SB26-132, or Magnus' Law, which requires law enforcement to conduct an impairment test at every fatal or serious injury crash in the state. That state bill was introduced on Friday, February 27. That bill will be heard in the Colorado State Senate Judiciary Committee on March 9th, where the next steps of the bill will be decided. The key time crunch is getting the bill through the state senate by mid-May. If it succeeds, it could be implemented in August of this year. If you are interested in engaging with the letter-writing tool that we discussed in the podcast, you can visit it here. If you want to learn more about the White Line or stay informed about what the organization will do next, you can follow along on their Instagram, here.Host: Logan Jones-Wilkins Guests: Jacqueline Claudia and Michael WhiteEditor and producer: Logan Jones-Wilkins Hosted on Acast. Road safety is a team sport – a marathon, not a sprint. The greatest gains occur when many elements synthesise and successes are shared. This webinar draws on experience across more than 140 countries, working alongside partners from every road safety ‘walk of life' – including governments, development banks, industry, mobility clubs, and NGOs – united by an ambitious goal: a world free of high-risk roads, despite a crisis that claims more than 3,000 lives each day. From advocacy at the United Nations, to aligning diverse stakeholders around common objectives, to collaborating with communities at the roadside in low- and middle-income countries, the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) and its partners are helping make safer journeys a reality. In this session, Judy Williams, winner of the ACRS Women in Road Safety Award presented by Austroads at the 2025 Australasian Road Safety Conference, examined how a clear vision, strategic partnerships, and active community engagement create the conditions for meaningful and lasting road safety progress, and why communicating success matters as much as delivering it. It explored how connection brings clarity and impact: bringing the right people together at the right time with leadership and evidence; building capacity to deliver strategic implementation plans; unlocking investment and partnership opportunities; and learning through evaluation. Using practical tools such as the Elements Wheel and SWOT thinking, Judy showed how progress doesn't require doing everything at once, but through understanding which levers to pull and when, harnessing the power of many through community-building, mentoring, and partnerships. Finally, the webinar highlighted the importance of making success visible. By sharing outcomes through human stories, compelling narratives, data, imagery, and effective communication, we can inform, persuade, inspire, and accelerate change. Progress comes from showing up, staying connected, learning from setbacks, and never giving up.

CCPC warns consumers to avoid dangerous car seat head straps

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) is warning consumers against the use of head straps in children's car seats. The product safety warning comes after extensive online market surveillance by the CCPC. Through these searches, the CCPC conducted a sweep of 100 product listings and attempted to obtain the required safety documentation for each product. All 100 listings were removed as the safety of the products could not be demonstrated. The products in question were being sold across five online marketplaces: Amazon, Cdiscount, Joom, Shein and Wish. They may be for sale on other platforms or websites. The head restraint accessory, which is sometimes described as a car seat head strap, a neck protection belt, a head support hugger or a nap aid/sleep holder belt, claims to prevent a child's head from falling forward or sideways if they fall asleep. However, an investigation by the CCPC's product safety team established that these products are dangerous and could cause serious injuries to a child's spine or neck during a collision or suffocation if the strap slips over the child's nose and mouth, or strangulation if the strap moves down to their neck. These products have already been recalled in Malta, Germany and Australia. While the number of products sold in Ireland is unknown, the CCPC is issuing a safety warning about the car seat head straps due to the serious risk they pose. Grainne Griffin, CCPC Director of Communications, said: "Products like this prey on a parent's basic instinct to protect their child. But instead of making a toddler safer, they put the child much more at risk. If the strap slips down over the child's face or neck, there is a serious risk of suffocation or strangulation. "CCPC sweeps have led to the removal of 100 product listings across various platforms. However, we're asking the public to remain vigilant and contact us if they see car seat head straps like these being advertised, be it online or in physical stores." Dr Katharine Harkin, Consultant in Public Health Medicine, HSE Child Health Public Health, said: "Do not place straps across your child's forehead in a car seat. They claim to prevent your child's head from falling forwards or sideways if they fall asleep. There is no evidence that these products are safe to use. "Car seats are designed to keep your child as safe as possible while travelling. The safest approach is always to use a properly fitted, appropriate car seat and do not use any additional products. The HSE's mychild.ie has more advice for parents on keeping their child safe while driving and other areas of child safety." The Road Safety Authority (RSA) does not recommend the use of devices or accessories that are purchased separately from a child's car seat. Christine Hegarty, Road Safety and Education Manager at RSA, said: "Child car seats are highly regulated and vigorously tested and are designed to perform and react in a specific way in the event of a collision. Any device that changes that process is dangerous." Car Seat Safety Advice for Consumers 1. Do not use car seat head straps as they are extremely dangerous. 2. Product add-ons or accessories for car seats should only be used when they have been tested and approved by the car seat manufacturer. 3. Using any other accessories may change the performance of the car seat or introduce other hazards during normal use. Corruption is often discussed in relation to politics and big business, but for many South Africans it plays out in far more everyday moments, particularly on the roads and in routine interactions with law enforcement, where small acts of bribery can quietly become normalised. Feizel Mamdoo speaks to John Maytham about his new Johannesburg-based anti-corruption initiative that aims to challenge this culture from the ground up. The former anti-apartheid activist, film maker, and communications expert has launched the “I Don’t Bribe” campaign, encouraging motorists to take a visible stand against bribery and to commit to responsible, law-abiding behaviour. Built with in-kind support from a designer and donations from members of the public, the campaign includes a windscreen decal carrying a clear message to both motorists and officials, while also promoting road safety by discouraging drivers from using bribes to avoid accountability for traffic offences that could endanger lives. Presenter John Maytham is an actor and author-turned-talk radio veteran and seasoned journalist. His show serves a round-up of local and international news coupled with the latest in business, sport, traffic and weather. The host’s eclectic interests mean the program often surprises the audience with intriguing book reviews and inspiring interviews profiling artists. Those aged over 25 will have to wait six months. Kiwi motorsport driver and road safety advocate Greg Murphy says he supports some of this, but claims that the Government hasn't gone far enough. A report from driver safety advocacy group AutoSense claims accidents linked to fatigue happen most between 7 and 8am, the hour children head to school. CEO Charles Dawson says fatigue is driven by our body clock - and it can be dangerous. "Any vehicle that has a human behind the wheel is going to be prone to this, it's all about our natural physiology." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Council Urged Not To Wait For Fatality To Take Action On Clareabbey Road Safety Measures

Clare County Council is being warned not to wait for a fatality to take action on road safety measures at one of the county's busiest junctions. The local authority is progressing plans for an Active Travel Scheme on the Clare Road and Limerick Road in Ennis, which include solutions to long-running problems at the Clareabbey roundabout. The Clareabbey Roundabout has long been one of the most contentious and dangerous junctions in the Ennis–Clarecastle area, raising ongoing concerns for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists. Proposed safety measures, as part of the R458 Active Travel Scheme focus, however, on improving cyclist and pedestrian safety with segregated cycle lanes, raised crossings, traffic calming and improved pedestrian links. Frustration has been voiced by some residents though in the wake of a public consultation event held last month, with calls for more ambitious solutions. Councillor Tommy Guilfoyle insists the current proposals would cause major tailbacks on all four arms on one of the county's busiest junctions. The Clarecastle Sinn Féin representative, who's written to the county's Oireachtas members in relation to the matter, believes flyover or underpass options must be examined. The Mayor of Clare welcomes the proposals saying current plans would improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians, but he agrees that the measures would lead to traffic carnage in the area. Clarecastle Fine Gael Councillor Paul Murphy is of the view that solutions for problems at what's he's described as a crucial artery within the county's transport network have been kicked down the road for far too long. He believes, however, local councillors remain united in their call for further options to be explored.

Road safety remains a major concern here in Clare, particularly after a sharp rise in crashes on the M18 and N18 late last year. With public anxiety growing and emergency services pointing to dangerous driving as a key factor, the Government says new legislation could help turn the tide. Joining Alan Morrissey on Monday's Morning Focus was Seán Canney TD, Minister of State with responsibility for Road Safety, to discuss whether these new laws will make a real difference on Clare roads. Concerns are growing over road safety along the stretch from Senan's rugby pitch to the Camogie roundabout in Shannon, with residents warning that speeding, illegal parking and the lack of footpaths are putting pedestrians and cyclists at risk. The road serves multiple sports facilities and nearby housing estates, and locals say traffic volumes and dangerous behaviour have increased significantly in recent years. On Thursday's Morning Focus, Alan Morrissey spoke with Sinn Fein Shannon MD councillor, James Ryan, who has confirmed he's raising the issue with the council following concerns highlighted by a local resident.
