Gaza: UN agencies insist Israeli aid plan leaves most vulnerable at riskClimate change takes extreme toll on African countries: WMORoad Safety Week begins with call to tackle ‘silent pandemic': UNECE
National Road Safety Week kicks off today, a time to reflect on the currentpoor driving standard in this state, National Road Safety Week the projectof Peter Frazer whose daughter Sarah was tragically killed by a truck driverin a totally avoidable crash on the Hume Highway at Mittigong in February2012. Since then, Peter has devoted his life to improving road safety -founding SARAH, standing for Safer Australian Roads and Highways. Thedriving force behind Australia’s National Road Safety Week and the roadsafety symbol the Yellow Ribbon. A campaign suggesting you wear ayellow ribbon on yourself and your car to show your support and make apledge on the SARAH website – “to drive so others survive” – to me giventhe total disregard by many motorists to road safety wearing a yellowribbon on yourself and your car is far too weak a message to what is aworsening problem year on year. We’ve just had two long weekends withincreased fatalities and numerous injuries. It’s clear there has beensubstantial vehicle growth in N.S.W. – a lot of new drivers mainly fromoverseas with poor knowledge of our road rules and driving conditions –you witness it almost daily – driver behavior and attitude is at an all-timelow, and driver education and compliance testing is in need of a radicaloverhaul. Talking further on National Road Safety Week starting today – a timesurely to reflect on the current poor driving standard in this state, Thecampaign is national however we still don’t have a set of national roadrules – individual states still singing from a different hymn book. NationalRoad Safety Week is the work of Peter Frazer who daughter Sarah wastragically killed by a truck driver in a totally avoidable crash on the HumeHighway at Mittagong in Feb 2012 when her car broke down. Tow truckdriver Geoffrey Clark and Sarah were loading her car when they were killedby the passing truck. Soon after N.S.W. expanded the road rule requiringdrivers to slow down to 40km/h for emergency responders to also includetow truck and roadside assistance workers. Amazingly, Victoria onlyannounced this week that from July 1 the current road rule requiringdrivers and motorcycle riders to slow down to 40km/h for police, fire, andambulance would be expanded - now including tow trucks, roadsideassistance and incident response vehicles displaying flashing lights. Itbeggars’ belief that after Sarah Frazer’s tragic death in 2012 it’s takenVictoria 13 years to implement a road rule which surely should have beennational road rule from Day 1. In this episode, we're joined by Police and Crime Commissioners Joy Allen (Durham) and Philip Seccombe (Warwickshire), two passionate leaders at the forefront of road safety reform. Together, they unpack the evolving role of PCCs in shaping both local and national road policing strategies. From relaunching partnerships and rolling out tech like ANPR and Operation Snap, to pushing for bold policy changes like lower drink-driving limits and graduated driver licensing, they aren't holding back. Both share hard-won insights, what they wish they'd known when they started, what needs to change, and how collaboration (across agencies and communities) is the real engine behind safer roads. We also hear about the powerful impact of victim advocacy, the importance of holding forces accountable, and how every traffic stop could disrupt wider criminal activity. Episode 19 touches on the bizarre reasons why the City of Winnipeg isn't advertising a Public Works Committee event, more federal election campaign news and views, and more evidence Elections Canada is trying to deceive the public that their "preventative measures" stop non-citizens from getting a ballot and voting.Part 1- Late on Wednesday, a City of Winnipeg representative emailed Marty Gold about his Sun column, Public Works presentation on Bike Lanes, Lower Speed Limits Kept Hush-Hush.The column revealed that while the Saturday morning event is framed as a “robust presentation” about the $96 Million councillors intend to spend on “Active Transportation and Road Safety in the next 6 years,” the people running the show seem to only want to hear from supporters and beneficiaries of their plans. Case in point- Committee Chair Janice Lukes specifically invited the bike lobby, but not WiseUP Winnipeg that represents 14,000 drivers. As Todd Dube suggested, that's one way politicians can use tax dollars to set up a robust echo chamber."It is not a Public Service-led event, and we do not promote information sessions organized and led by an elected official," explained the email. If you think that doesn't make sense, wait till you hear the rest of the explanation of how "there is no component of public engagement or feedback-seeking at this event" and how Marty responded. 20.15 Part 2 starts off with some reaction to Sun columns. Hear comments on the Public Works info session, the injection site Town Hall held by Point Douglas residents, and the passing of Con Lynch, a venerated North Kildonan teacher with a deep connection to Marty's family.27.15 - Listeners and readers contribute tips and observations about the state of the federal campaign. Prospects for the NDP are looking bleak while the Conservatives are finally allowing local candidates to speak for themselves. Meanwhile, the Jew-haters have made their presence felt in Tuxedo, targeting Jewish Tory incumbent Marty Morantz. 34.10 Part 3 - A recent correspondence from Elections Canada revealed how the agency tries to fool Canadians into believing their lax ID practices don't open the door to non-citizens being handed a ballot. Listen to the Elections Canada memo sent to encourage tax preparers to add clients to the voting list. You'll wonder if the agency is only interested in padding voter rolls and not in protecting our democracy.

The driver licensing system may be in for a government overhaul. Under proposals released yesterday, the practical driving test for a full licence will go, and fewer eyesight tests will be needed. A clean record would be needed for restricted drivers to gain to their full licence, the demerit threshold for learner and restricted drivers would fall to 50, and there'd be zero alcohol limits for learner and restricted drivers of any age. Road Safety Campaigner Greg Murphy joins the show to discuss the changes. LISTEN ABOVE. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Government wants to change our drivers licensing system, but AA believes more improvements are needed to have a greater impact on the youth road toll. Among the changes are removing the full licence test, more consequences for drivers who commit traffic offences while on their learner or restricted licence, and a zero-alcohol limit for everyone until they reach a full licence. AA Road Safety Spokesperson Dylan Thomsen joins the show to discuss the proposal. LISTEN ABOVE. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Katie Laleman from the Henry County Farm Bureau recently highlighted several significant initiatives fostering community support and education. The Bushels for Hunger program has enabled area farmers to donate enough grain, translating to 1.7 million meals over 15 years, significantly aiding the River Bend Food Bank with a $21,523 contribution this year. Scholarships worth $50,000 have been awarded by the Bureau, with recipients soon to be announced. Additionally, the Rural Nurse Practitioner Scholarship Program is inviting applications, focusing on strengthening healthcare in rural Illinois. Legislation to allow roadside drug testing has recently passed its third and final reading in Parliament - but concerns have been raised. Some fear that people using ADHD medication could be caught out by the new roadside drug tests carried out by police. AA Road Safety spokesperson Dylan Thomsen says testing devices in Australia don't generally pick up on ADHD medication or medicinal cannabis - so it's possible people won't need to worry. "The law is also going to have a medical defence... so if you have a prescription and you're using it as prescribed, you shouldn't be looking at any fines or demerit points even if you did return a positive test."
