Pedestrians and cyclists in BC are killed and injured at a rate that would never be accepted in any other public space. We ask a simple question with a complex political answer: if automated speed enforcement cuts injuries and deaths so reliably, why isn't it everywhere it's needed?Dr. Brandon Yau, Medical Health Officer with Vancouver Coastal Health, helps us unpack how speed and red light cameras actually work, where they're currently deployed, and what the data shows about their impact. We examine the “cash grab” myth head‑on and discuss how to design a fair program with clear signage, robust technology, and transparent, revenue‑neutral operations that reinvest any residual funds into road safety.Support the show***********************************************The Bike Sense podcast with Peter Ladner is produced by the BC Cycling Coalition – your voice for safer and more accessible cycling and active transportation in British Columbia. On this episode of GetConnected, we're digging into three big questions: How do you stay safe on the road, stretch your money abroad, and trust the tech inside your next car? First, we look at your wallet on the go with June Yuan, Product Lead at Wise. New data from Wise shows ATM fees in some popular destinations have exploded — up over 1,300% in Vietnam and 3,500% in Indonesia — based on nearly 10 million ATM transactions worldwide. June explains what's driving the spike, how exchange rates and per-transaction limits quietly drain your budget, and practical ways Canadians can avoid getting gouged while travelling this holiday season. Brandon Sturgis, Global Product Manager at BFGoodrich, joins us to unpack the latest in tire technology and safety. From winter grip and stopping distances to how modern tire design impacts EVs and SUVs, we'll talk about the science in that rubber keeping you on the road. Finally, we look at the future of crash-free driving with Åsa Haglund, Head of Volvo Cars Global Safety Centre. She shares how Volvo is using AI, advanced sensors, and 50+ years of crash data to engineer a world without collisions — from the Multi-Adaptive Safety Belt that adjusts to each passenger, to occupant sensing systems that help ensure no one is left behind in a hot car. Road safety, smarter money, and AI-driven car tech — it's all coming up on GetConnected.

New advancements in technology are reportedly behind a significant decrease in car crashes. Collisions have dropped 7 percent each year over the last two years, according to the latest AMI motor report. AA Principal Policy Advisor Terry Collins says adaptive cruise control and autonomous emergency braking are among the recent developments that have made all the difference. "We know that accidents occur when people try to do their best and some things happen through inattention. What they do is they give you that physical warning - or they apply the breaks when something happens unexpectedly." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Two years ago this week I was in Manhattan covering the Vision Zero Cities conference hosted by the great nonprofit Transportation Alternatives. At a panel discussion titled, Supersized SUVs, Mega Trucks, and Regulatory Failure, one of the speakers made me sit up and take notice: He railed against feckless leadership that wouldn't improve bus service, critiqued the "war on cars," called for higher taxes on large vehicles that are more prone to kill people, and spoke about traffic victims and transportation policy with the candor, clarity and conviction you'd expect from an activist. But this wasn't an activist. It was an elected official. He was a member of the state assembly named Zohran Mamdani. Yes, the same Mamdani who might very well be New York City's next mayor in a few weeks. This audio from that 2023 conference is a detailed view inside Mamdani's mind and it reveals how he approaches what are still some the most important road safety and transportation topics of the day.Links:BikePortland recap of this panel discussionMamdani campaign websitePlease support this work! A fast-paced episode that stitches together three urgent stories shaking the nation: local officials in Los Angeles declaring a state of emergency amid sweeping ICE enforcement; a devastating, fiery multi-vehicle crash on I-85 that killed eight people (including children); and the fallout from a major hostage release and large prisoner swap in the Israel-Gaza conflict. The hosts parse what “emergency” means when law enforcement, public safety, and political priorities collide — and why ordinary people feel the consequences first.
