CLIF endurance athlete and a leader in the space of ski-mountaineering and endurance sports, Caroline Gleich shares with us how she has built her career and broken barriers as a woman and as an activist. She began her ski career while attending University of Utah and then went on to become the first woman to ski all 90 lines of the Chuting Gallery, climb Mount Everest and has competes in several ultra-marathons. Carolines legacy extends beyond her expeditions as she combines her passion for sport and advocacy as an activist for gender equity and environmental policy, traveling to Washington DC to testify in front of the House and Senate and organize climate rallies. Today she shares with us the pros and cons of social media, how to best protect yourself as a woman when faced with online harassment and how to build your brand with a powerful community of women and mentors. Caroline explores with us the path to becoming a pro and how to tear down the harmful narratives in sport around the “ideal” woman's body type. Caroline Gleich lives on the ridgeline between adventure and activism. Her trips around the globe often transcend summit goals as she merges mountain missions with driving awareness around diversity, equality and inclusion, and environmental justice. In 2019, Caroline summited the tallest mountain in the world—with a fully torn ACL in her knee. Two years earlier, she was the first woman to ski the entirety of Utah's Chuting Gallery. But before she became a professional skier, Gleich thought she wanted to be a pro climber, after getting her start on old school sandbagged trad routes. While she ultimately pursued skiing, Gleich uses her rock and ice climbing skills to further her ski mountaineering goals. On the advocacy side, she organizes marches, protests and rallies to further the causes she believes in, and has traveled to Washington DC to lobby for Protect Our Winters. In this episode of the Alpinist Podcast, Caroline recounts her Everest expedition, challenges stereotypes around body image, and dives into the dark side of her personality and how she plans for a future full of unknowns. In 2001, when Caroline Gleich was 15 years old, her half-brother Martin died in an avalanche while skiing in the Utah backcountry. That tragedy didn’t prevent Gleich from becoming a professional skier—quite the opposite—but it has led her to develop a unique approach to managing risk. The truth is, avalanches are largely predictable: they only occur on certain slopes and under certain conditions. The problem is that such slopes and conditions coincide almost perfectly with the most fun skiing and snowboarding in the backcountry. This often leads people to make dangerous decisions, especially when they’ve been lucky so many times before. In this second episode of a two-part special exploring our relationship to the hazards of avalanches, Gleich talks about her long journey to becoming comfortable in the backcountry and how she believes we can stack the odds in our favor, even in the most unpredictable environments. This episode of the Outside Podcast is brought to you by Lake Hartwell Country, a largely undiscovered region in the mountains of South Carolina that’s one of the best adventure playgrounds anywhere. Caroline’s one of the most accomplished ski mountaineers in the world and a passionate activist for the environment and gender equality. But we didn’t hit on any of that in this interview. Instead, we talked about her experience being forced to confront mortality - first when she was 15 and her half-brother died in an avalanche, later when she lost her best friend to the same fate in 2014, and as recently as 2019 when she summited Everest and encountered something rarely talked about. It was an honor to bear witness to Caroline’s openness around these topics and hear her share how these experiences have impacted her life now. Couldn’t have asked for a better kickoff to Season 2. @carolinegelich More at @notimetowasteproject and www.notimetowasteproject.com

What can you do to advocate for environmental justice for all, fight for underrepresented voices and protect our frontline communities? What inspires you to protect public lands? How can we find healing through these turbulent times? On this episode of the Caroline Gleich show, U.S. Representative Raul Grijalva dives deeper into these questions and finds solutions on how we can transition towards a sustainable future. Congressman Raul Grijalva is a Democrat serving Arizona's 3rd District. He began his career in public service four decades ago as a community organizer in Tucson. Throughout his career, he's always fought for underrepresented voices. In 2018, Rep. Grijalva became the Chair of the House Natural Resources Committee and I had a chance to meet him in February 2020 when I was invited to testify in support of his bill, The American Public Lands and Waters Climate Solutions Act (HR 5435). Testifying was strangely intense and scary experience, but whenever I got scared, I felt comforted by his presence. I feel better about our country knowing there are people like him advocating for livable wages for American workers, immigration reform and land protections to safeguard our nation's natural treasures for the next generation. On the show today, we discuss the story behind the American Public Lands and Waters Climate Solution Act, how public lands can be a part of the climate solution, and the intersectionality of climate, environment, and racial/social justice. He shares what inspired him to protect public lands and gives us tips on how we can make our environmental activism intersectional and inclusive to build resilience coalitions to advocate for public lands and to unite against climate change. Today we are talking to Rob Lea and we think you’ll find this one pretty inspirational. In 2019, Rob completed what he has dubbed the Ultimate World Triathlon. In the span of 6 months, he summited Mount Everest, swam the English Channel, and rode his bike across America. This is a man that isn’t afraid to take on hard challenges, in fact, he thrives on them.Rob also had his eyes on the greater good as he summited Mount Everest with his now wife, Caroline Gleich (did I fail to mention he married his dream girl in the midst of all this?). Rob & Caroline used their climb as an opportunity to raise awareness for women’s equality, drawing attention to the implicit biases that exist toward women. We explore all of this and more on today’s episode with Rob. So settle in to whatever it is you’re doing and enjoy. In This Episode We Discuss:What inspired the Ultimate World TriathlonThe difference between suffering while climbing Everest, swimming the English Channel and biking across AmericaHow Rob prepared his body for each leg of the journey (like gaining 30 pounds in 30 days before the swim)How to develop coping mechanisms to get through hard momentsWhat motivated the “tri for equality” aspectChallenges for female athletes he’s witnessed first-hand as the partner of a pro athleteWhat someone can do to understand their implicit biasWhat he misses when he doesn’t have a “next” adventure planned.Thought Experiment:Rob’s motivation to take on these monumental challenges is simple, but so inspiring. To paraphrase, it gives him something to look forward to. Finding a reason to want to better yourself everyday is not easy. But if you can find a challenge you look forward to (one that causes you to train, study or prepare incessantly) you’ll be forced to become an improved version of yourself. We live for the feeling that comes along when you finally put all your training and preparation to the test - there’s nothing better.Today’s thought experiment may sound simple but might be challenging to answer. What are you looking forward to? It’s perfectly fine to look forward to your beach vacation - we work hard to save the money to afford to do such things - but, beyond that, I’m asking about something you can achieve. Something that is simultaneously a challenge but also seems achievable with application. It can be as simple as making time to read a book or as daunting as climbing Mount Everest. What are you looking forward to and what will it take to make it reality? Until next time.Resources:Follow Rob’s adventures on Instagram!Interrupt your implicit bias with this worksheet!Learn about the Big Mountain Dreams Foundation!Get yourself some real estate in Park City from Rob!

Caroline Gleich has consistently pushed the envelope in the high alpine environment of the Himalaya. She has also pushed it at home in Utah's Wasatch Mountains. In 2017 she became the first woman to descend all 90 lines of "The Chuting Gallery," Andrew McLean's guide to steep, extreme skiing in the Wasatch. She has also skied Cho Oyu, the 6th tallest peak in the world, summited Mt. Everest and skied the three tallest peaks in Ecuador, in one weekend. Despite her accomplishments, Caroline has consistently had to battle misogyny, sexism and doubters at an unprecedented level for a professional athlete. We talk about these topics at length in our conversation, as well as the larger gender-bias implications in the outdoor space. Caroline tells us about the vitriol of the cyber-bullying she has experienced throughout her career, and more importantly, how she has chosen to combat and beat it. We also talk about the importance of her family, how losing several close friends in the mountains drives her to this day, anxiety and depression and her outspoken defense of environmental and social causes. We think you will enjoy this intimate and insightful chat with one of the most accomplished ski mountaineers and fantastic persons of our day.
Ski mountaineer and activist Caroline Gleich sits down to talk about her background, social media, self esteem, her budding political aspirations, and optimism in the face of impending doom.
Equal parts athlete, influencer and activist, Caroline Gleich has changed the way we look at pro skiers. And, over her career, she’s changed the way she looks at herself. Unapologetically “open book,” Gleich dishes on putting up with social media trolls, wedding-day stress, the Trump administration and recovering from injury.
Caroline Gleich is a professional ski mountaineer and activist who decided to use her platform as an athlete for good at the top of Mt. Everest early this summer. Her “Climb for Equality” campaign used her 29,029-foot climb as a platform to encourage more women to take on mountains in the outdoors, the boardroom, and daily life. Caroline’s actual journey to the top is an incredible story.
Adventurer Rob Lea is 2/3 of the way through his goal of climbing Everest, swimming the English Channel and riding a bike across the United States. We talk to him about what it takes to make these crazy ideas come to fruition, why he's doing it, and how he's become more engaged in big-picture conservation efforts thanks to his fianceé, mountaineer and activist Caroline Gleich.
This week, Alyssa and Haley chat with Caroline Gleich, professional skiier and ski mountaineer. Caroline shares what it's like to stand on top of the world, how she feels about the risks and costs of big expeditions, and why she wants to see more women reaching the summit of physical and professional peaks. Caroline talks climbing Everest with a torn ACL, being a climate change activist, and forging her own path despite an unconventional trajectory. Once labeled a ski model, Caroline Gleich’s path to becoming a respected ski mountaineer has been quite the climb. From the billboards of Utah to the monsters of the Himalaya, there is no fear in this 5’1” ball of energy. The podcast gives a little of Caroline’s backstory and then a lot about Everest. It was a heavy year on the mountain and Caroline shares what she experienced. It’s a real look into a world that most of us only read about and it’s a great listen. Caroline Gleich, professional skier and mountaineer and Founder of the Big Mountain Dreams Foundation, joins Maddy Orr to discuss her experiences with climate advocacy in schools and in Washington, the importance of spending time outside, and role models in the sustainability space.
In April 2019, Caroline Gleich and Rob Lea will climb Mt. Everest as a “Climb For Equality,” to highlight the role that men and people of all genders can play in supporting women’s leadership, in the mountains and beyond. Despite gains for women in other areas of society, only 10% of climbers on 8000m are women. As of June 2017, only 536 women have climbed Mt. Everest. It’s not enough to have women showing up. We need more women at the top. The Climb for Equality is a social awareness campaign where Rob and Caroline will aim to get 100 mountaineers of all genders to do a social media post about how they will support women’s leadership and combat bias. The campaign will provide a tool kit of ways to interrupt bias. 10% of funds raised will go towards organizations that support women’s leadership. Caroline Gleich It’s been Caroline’s lifelong dream to take skis to the Himalayas. She never thought she would be drawn to Everest until she was on the drive to Cho Oyu in September 2018 and saw Everest for the first time. Her first thought was, “I want to ski that.” Caroline plans to ski from 7500m down the North Ridge and North Col. It will be a highlight in her skiing career after skiing in big mountain ranges around the world including the Cordillera Blanca, French and Swiss Alps, Canadian Rockies and others. As a professional ski mountaineer and environmental activist, Caroline has seen gender inequality among the world’s tallest peaks and in the halls of Congress. With strong support from her partner, Rob, they realized that advocating for gender equality isn’t only a woman’s job, and through this project, aim to bring strong male allies and people of all genders into the conversation. Rob Lea As a World Champion Half Ironman, Rob is no stranger to physically exhausting, challenging, and long days. The list of triathlons Rob has completed is exhaustive and his love of the sport has given him a new objective: the Ultimate World Triathlon. As part of the Ultimate World Tri, Rob will climb Mt. Everest, swim the English Channel, and cycle across America. More than the physical challenge, Rob will also raise awareness for gender inequality in the mountains and the boardroom, based on the He for She initiative by the United Nations. Rob’s mountaineering career includes climbs of mountains around the world including Aconcagua, Denali, and most recently, Cho Oyo. He is also planning on doing what is called the Ultimate world triathlon, which includes Climbing Everest, Swimming the English Channel, and ride his bike across America, all within 6 months. A couple of weeks ago I participated in a ski retreat in Jackson Wyoming called SummitX, which brought together professionals at the convergence of tech, leadership, entrepreneurship, and adventure. The event focused on a whole lot of skiing powder (priorities straight right) and leadership development, and through intense workshops and in-depth conversations, I think it's safe to say everyone involved walked away a stronger leader and human being. As part of the event, I got the opportunity to host a live recording of this podcast where I interviewed Dirk Collins and Caroline Gleich. When I was conceptualizing this conversation and the event as a whole, I knew we would have something special with these two guests and thoughtful live audience, but I have to say - what we ended up with exceeded my expectations. A couple of quick notes to listeners and then a little more about my guests. So obviously doing an interview in front of a live audience is a little different then doing a 1 on 1 conversation in my living room. The first cool thing about a live show is the participation from the audience, so be sure to stay tuned in for the Q&A towards the end of the conversation. You'll also probably pick up on the fact that I showed some video clips of cool projects that Caroline and Dirk have done, and needless to say that doesn't translate too well into an audio only podcast, but I at least tried to keep in some of the sound bites so you could get a taste of the experience. If you want to check out the video clips, all the links are in the show resources section for this episode in your podcast platform or at my website. Lastly, I apologize in advance for a little bit of feedback noise from the microphones being passed around - nature of the beast guys. Okay so, a little bit about Caroline and Dirk. Caroline Gleich is a professional ski mountaineer and environmental advocate based in Salt Lake City, UT. If you ski in the Wasatch, you've either seen her on the skin track or in the magazines. She is passionate about a wide-range of climate and social issues, and is often working with advocacy non-profits like Protect Our Winters, Heal Utah, Winter Wildlands Alliance, and Tree Utah. She is also the founder of Big Mountain Dreams Foundation, which is dedicated to protecting big mountain environments, while also advocating for the people who live and play there. The film clip we saw from Caroline is called Follow Through, and it documents her journey to ski all 90 ski lines in Andrew McLeans book on steep skiing called the Chuting Gallery. Dirk Collins is a mountain athlete, producer, director, filmmaker and brand strategist based in Jackson, Wyoming. He is the founder and president of One Eyed Bird, a boutique creative marketing and entertainment house with a passion for meaningful storytelling. Dirk also co-founded Teton Gravity Research, which is arguably one of the most well-known outdoor film and media production companies out there. Dirk is renowned for taking on complex and technically challenging projects, where his ability to create compelling stories for his clients defies traditional boundaries, no matter the athletic challenge, remote location, or harsh environment. The live audience saw a few different film clips from Dirk, the first was a segment from a series of shorts he did with author and flow expert Steven Kotler for his book Rise of Superman. The second was an insane action sports commercial he did for Pirelli Tires, and the third documented a ski mountaineering trip he took with Jimmy Chin and Kit DesLauriers in Greenland. I want to give special thanks to my friends Eric Shutt (who founded SummitX) and Joseph Abrahams for bringing me onto the staff, and also to the rest of the crew Josh Cogan, Matt Adkins, and Todd Hanna. And the last thing before we get into the live interview… Some of you know about Outwild, which is a company I started with my friends Courtney Sanford and Sanni McCandless. Outwild is an event series and resource hub for people who want to create more outdoor and value-driven lifestyles, and I wanted to let you all know we have a few events coming up. This June, we are hosting a women's only retreat in the mountains of New Hampshire focused on following and creating more of what makes you feel alive into your daily life. I'll be doing a workshop of harnessing flow states on top of a lot of other cool workshops and outdoor activities. As of this morning, March 21st there is actually only one ticket left to that event. However, we do have our larger annual festival coming up in September in Lotus California as well. Tickets will be going on sale soon, so stay tuned or go to Outwild.co to find out more. Also want to give a quick shout out to all the Outwild 2018 alumni who threw a pretty banging ski trip reunion in Salt Lake City a few weeks ago - had an awesome time with you guys! Caroline Gleich is a 33 year old professional ski mountaineer, adventurer and activist for social and environmental justice. She was the first woman to ski all 90 lines of "The Chuting Gallery" a steep skiing guidebook to Utah's Wasatch Mountain Range by Andrew Mclean and she runs ultramarathons! We talk about some of thing Caroline is passionate about: skiing and running and activism as well as mental health, online bullying, and making a living in the outdoor industry.
Caroline Gleich is a ski mountaineer who knows the meaning of scary but rewarding: whether she's climbing 8,000 meter mountains in the Himalayas or anticipating her future as an adventure-seeking wife and mom. Years of hard work have brought her here and while she's a self described late bloomer, Caroline's learned to trust the timing in her life. Looking back on 2018, Caroline shared on her Instagram that she summited 72 peaks and climbed 489,704 human powered vertical feet of uphill. Included in these peaks and vertical feet was the 6th highest mountain in the world, Cho Oyu. We talked with Caroline about that climb and the family she sees in her future. Even though she’s ski mountaineered some of the tallest mountains in the world, her thoughts on fear, self-trust, and creating the life she wants for herself hit close to home. Caroline Gleich is a professional ski mountaineer, endurance athlete, and environmental activist. This past fall, she climbed and skied Cho Oyu, the sixth highest mountain in the world. On today’s episode, we’ll talk about that adventure, where she faced a spell of high altitude pulmonary edema (hape) that threatened her chances at summitting. Later in our conversation, we’ll talk about the implicit and sometimes explicit bias that women face in adventure sports that are predominantly male. In today’s Company Spotlight, we feature Onsight Equipment, an eco-friendly travel gear company based out of British Colombia. Onsight uses recycled materials to build travel storage solutions, including bicycle frame bags, messenger bags, and travel organizers. Caroline Gleich is a magnet for adventure. She is one of the ski mountaineering world's most prolific skiers. She has been on the cover of many skiing magazines, premiered in Warren Miller films, and skied some of the most challenging lines around the world. Most notable and recent was that she was the 4th person ever and first woman to ski all 90 lines in the Chuting Gallery in the Wasatch Range. Caroline will be the first to say, "Ski Mountaineering is really dangerous." She is also an environmental activist. Backcountry skiing is so much more than being a skilled skier. You have to have intuition; when to summit and when not to ski. When to push past the shaky heart in the throat fear and when to listen to it. So why does she do it? This podcast is about so much more than just adventures and how to decide what to do when faced with a challenge. It's about how to stand up to cyber bullies, it's about gender equality, what it's really like to be an endurance athlete and how isolating that can be, and it's about what it really means to be brave. Gleich and host Mike Powell also discuss gender biases in snowsports. "There's still so much implicit bias about what a small woman can do," says Gleich. "In snowsports, we still have a really long way to go as far as gender equality. At the end of the day, I think my actions will speak louder than any of my words. I do want validation and would love more recognition about my accomplishments, but at the end of the day, I'd rather just do the thing and let my actions speak for me." In addition to being a ski mountaineer, Gleich is known for her perpetual high energy. "I'm just so grateful in my adult life to keep my body in motion. Growing up, sitting through school was always really hard for me," says Gleich. "When I'm in the mountains, I'm just so overjoyed to be there. So I think just having the energy and the stoke, it was really helpful to have that burning desire."
