What was it like to travel in an era where there were little “Black Wall Streets'' all over the U.S. in the midst of dangerous Jim Crow laws? Alvin Hall, award-winning television and radio broadcaster, best-selling author, and renowned financial educator, transports us into that historic realm. His podcast, Driving the Green Book, guides listeners along his road trip with Janee Wood Weber to the historically Black towns and destinations featured in the Negro Motorist’s Green Book, published from 1936-1967. Hosts Noami and Anaïs explore the nuances of navigating life on the road during a pandemic, holding solidarity with the Asian-American community and how the Green Book paved the way for Diversify Vanlife to become a living resource for nomads of color.Check out the full interactive show notes on our website at Diversify Vanlife and find the episode transcript here: Episode 4 TranscriptFeatured Guest Links:www.drivingthegreenbook.com/Driving the Green Book TwitterAlvin Hall TwitterMacmillan Podcasts TwitterMacmillan Podcasts Facebook Apple Maps GuideApple Music Playlist NATI Podcast Links:Podcast @nomadsattheintersectionsCommunity @diversify.vanlifeHost @irietoauroraCo-host @anaismoniqEnjoy this episode? Leah Thomas is an intersectional environmental activist on a mission to dismantle systems of oppression in the environmental movement. Her personal platform @greengirlleah was born out of a space that lacked representation of Black people in the outdoors and spoke to her passion of getting people started on their environmental justice journey. Her quest for self-authenticity, environmental justice and sustainability created the momentum for her educational page, @intersectionalenvironmentalist, to go viral. In this episode, Leah drops gem after gem: how destigmatizing cannabis use for Black and Brown people relates to the environmental movement; how making our environmental efforts inclusive and intersectional benefits everyone; and how expanding our understanding of Indigenous land protectors makes our environmental impact more effective. Bree (they/them) is a 20-something year old Black Queer non-binary nomad. In 2020, they cut their corporate strings to begin a life centered on having full autonomy of their time and purpose. Hottie, their renovated vintage RV, is now home to Bree and their two giant dogs. Aside from imagining a world without white supremacy, they fill their time with hiking, photography, writing and documenting their journey on the road. In this episode, Bree challenges cis-normative views of identity, the discomfort of unlearning, and what it means to be intentional when creating inclusive spaces. Listen til the end to hear their simplistic perspective on how to navigate pronouns like a human being. Welcome to Nomads at the Intersections podcast! Our hope is that this podcast will inspire us to shift our perspective on what road travel looks like, by exploring the stories and experiences of people from different walks of life. We’ll dive into topics from the margins. Topics, both big and small, that will make us rethink what community means to us. We're gonna get raw and real, and have some fun with it. In this season we’ll have conversations with people we don’t really hear from in the road travel community. You know, the ones who don’t always fit the mold. That person you waved to on the highway, or sat next to at the campfire, but you never really heard their story. Those folks who, often unheard, make our community great.Join us for Nomads at the Intersections podcast. The first episode drops Friday, October 23rd. See y’all then!
Do you want to diversify your perspective on road travel? Host Noami Grevemberg and co-host Anaïs Monique dive deep into the stories and weave through the challenges, journeys and inspirations of the diverse voices who, often unheard, make the nomadic community great. Noami is a Black woman and a nomad who has been living in her campervan since 2016. She started Diversify Vanlife in 2019 in response to the lack of representation of BIPOC in the road travel community. In this show, you’ll hear from BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, disabled, and other underrepresented travelers at the many crossroads of the modern nomadic movement. Make sure you're subscribed to Nomads at the Intersections to hear the premiere episode, launching this October-- and follow @diversify.vanlife and @nomadsattheintersections to stay in the loop as more updates drop. Nomads at the Intersections is hosted by Noami Grevemberg and co-hosted by Anaïs Monique.A Ravel Media production in collaboration with Diversify Vanlife.Production support by Laura Borichevsky.Podcast cover artwork designed by Karen Ceballos.
This is the last episode of Women on the Road, but by no means the end of our community. For some of us, what got us in the car in the first place are the things we’re running from-- but no matter how many miles we drive, those things end up in the passenger seat, along for the ride with us. Kathy Karlo, a climber, writer, Director of No Man’s Land Film Festival, and host and creator of the For the Love of Climbing podcast, is someone who knows the contents of her passenger seat well-- both literally and figuratively. This platform as you know it started several years ago in response to the lack of representation of female road travelers in the media we consume. After over 100 written interviews published online, followed by more than 100 episodes of the WOTR podcast and the growth of this tight-knit online community, we know there are still more conversations to be had.But we also feel, more strongly than ever, that in the spirit of what WOTR has aimed to do-- broaden our perception of who is on the road, and elevate those voices and stories-- that our current team at @ravel.media are not the ones who need to be hosting these conversations moving forward. That’s why we’re making some big changes. Thanks to Diversify Vanlife, we are partnering to evolve this platform so that it can further serve the conversations that aren’t being had enough, led by the people we need to hear from most.Starting in October, Diversify Vanlife will replace the WOTR podcast under the name Nomads at the Intersections. This monthly show, hosted by founder Noami Grevemberg and co-host Anaïs Monique, will shift the narrative and navigate the challenges, journeys and inspirations of the modern nomadic movement while diving deep into the stories of underrepresented voices. If you’re already subscribed to WOTR on your favorite podcast app, you’ll automatically start getting Nomads at the Intersections content as the re-launch approaches. We’ll also drop some exciting updates right here as well as via Instagram @diversify.vanlife, so just sit tight, make sure you’re following along, and we’ll keep you updated.WOTR as the show you know it now with host Laura Borichevsky will be on air until Friday, 9/18. Grizel is a Latinx mental health therapist, former van dweller, writer, thru hiker, photographer, and host of our team’s latest show, Underneath It All-- a series that dives deep into the spaces where the outdoors and mental health intersect. More than ever, we’ve seen the overt and profound need to keep the conversation around mental health going, which is why we are so thankful for folks like Grizel who not only bring professional insight and deep compassion into their work-- but also want to share their learnings and experiences so openly with others. If you haven’t gotten to know a bit about Grizel yet, we figured this was as good of a time as any. That’s why we mashed up Grizel’s recent Women on the Road interview from the spring with Episode 1 of Underneath It All so you can learn a bit about her-- both as someone who loves the outdoors and travel-- and also as a podcast host committed to helping open up more conversations around how we can take care of ourselves and others.Other resources mentioned in this episode:Listen to Underneath It All, the newest Ravel Media podcast, and subscribe!Follow Underneath It All on Instagram: @underneathitallpodFollow Grizel on Instagram: @_grizel_Women On The Road on Instagram - @womenontheroadJoin the Women On The Road Podcast Facebook groupEnjoy this episode? As a queer couple, Natasha Seitz and Beth Luby challenge the notion we hear often online from white, straight couples: that the road always feels safe and strangers always seem welcoming. Because the reality is that safety also equates to privilege, and it shows up in the ways you camp, where you travel to, and what you do when you get there. In this episode, we get to know Natasha and Beth and dig into the safety considerations they make often while traveling, how intersectionality comes into play, and how your gut and your head sometimes tell two different stories about what’s really going on.Resources From This Episode:Follow Natasha and Beth on Instagram: @seeingtheseitzListen to Underneath It All, the newest Ravel Media podcast, and subscribe!Women On The Road on Instagram - @womenontheroadJoin the Women On The Road Podcast Facebook groupSponsor Websites & Codes:Manta Sleep - get 10% off with promo code ROADTravel + Leisure has a new podcast out, hosted by travel expert Kellee Edwards, called “Let’s Go Together”. The truth is this: as white women on the road, we’ve taken up a lot of space within the #vanlife movement. And it’s long past time to unpack how white women’s presence in popular road travel negatively impacts the Black traveler community. So in this episode, we spend some dedicated time addressing topics related to antiracism within the modern van life movement, why it’s been so tough to see positive change in this community, white women travelers’ collective role in all of this, and how to develop the practice of lifelong learning when it comes to antiracism work.Resources From This Episode:Diversify Vanlife on Instagram: @diversify.vanlifeDiversify Vanlife Book Club: @diversifyvanlifebookclubFollow Jayme on Instagram: @gnomad_homeFollow Rachel Cargle on Instagram: @rachel.cargleWhite Fragility by Robin DiAngeloHow to Talk to Your Family About Racism, by Jen WinstonWomen On The Road on Instagram - @womenontheroadJoin the Women On The Road Podcast Facebook groupAdditional Resources in Antiracism Work:Podcasts:Still ProcessingCode SwitchPod Save The PeopleAnother Round Good Ancestor1619Books:So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma OluoMe and White Supremacy by Layla F. Road travel can take many forms. And Alexandra Keeling knows this better than most-- because she's done a lot of them. From RV life, to towing a small trailer, to sleeping out of the back of a car, Alex's journeys on the road so far have shown that no matter how you travel, it all counts. Because regardless of your travel style or what you're hitting the road with, everyone is susceptible to unexpected surprises and challenges. Alex knows this part better than most, too-- but that’s her story to tell in this episode.Resources From This Episode:Follow Alex on Instagram: @alexandra_abroadWomen On The Road on Instagram - @womenontheroadJoin the Women On The Road Podcast Facebook groupSponsor Websites & Codes:SalomonBetterhelp - get 10% off with promo code ROADEnjoy this episode? Can we hit the road responsibly during a pandemic? As someone planning to car camp or take a drive into the wilderness, you might not feel like you alone could make a huge impact on this pandemic-- but the reality is that travel can lead to transmission-- which means that travelers have the capacity to create an immense effect on the trajectory of viral spread. The good news is that we’re not here to make you feel guilty. We know you want to travel (we do too!), but more importantly: we want you to be knowledgeable and prepared, whether you’re planning to get out there soon, or hoping to sometime later in 2020. In this episode, we’re aiming to help in that process by providing you with questions, tips, and tools to make your own, best decisions at the time. We look at information through the eyes of women who love to travel and also hold public health as a top priority: Seattle-based nurse and overlander Emily Scott, travel nurse Em Cheng, and founder of the Outdoor Advocacy Project, Katie Boué.So tune in and get ready to be honest with yourself when it comes to responsible travel. This episode honors the mom figures in our lives who inspire or encourage dreams of road travel by paying tribute to one mom in particular: our host Laura Borichevsky’s mom, Jackie Hughes. Before #vanlife… before Instagram… before she could even drive: Laura’s belief in her ability to do road travel was shaped by her mom’s experience driving across the country when she was in her early twenties, and it stuck with her because Jackie’s journey was full of purpose, bravery, and quite a bit of fun packed into a handful of days and a tiny 1975 Camaro. Becca Foss, long-term road traveler and outdoor guide, knows firsthand through the loss of her husband that sometimes you just have to find ways to push yourself through. It might be climbing a steep hill on a loaded up bike, sending a rock wall, or facing unexpected tragedy and learning how to meet it head on. Being strong doesn’t always look like pushing past your limits. Sometimes it simply looks like showing up regularly and sticking it out. Mental health is something we've talked about before on the show, but never before has it felt more important to dive in. That's why this week, we took some time to focus on what challenges, resources, and tips this community has and needs. Whether you're a full-time traveler and your shelter is a car or a tent, or you have a more stationary place to stay and you're feeling stagnant-- the reality is that this forced by necessary stillness is a challenge for us all, on top of the anxiety that can be triggered during crisis. It's a good thing for us all that insightful, compassionate folks like Grizel Williams are a part of our community. Grizel lives on the road and is a writer with background in mental health counseling. After years in the field, she shares what mental health considerations she's thinking about now-- as well as what resources or practices we can all look to during this especially challenging time. Giddi Oteo, former full-time road traveler, has an inherent knack for holding both the real, transparent truth and the beauty around her. You’ll hear it from her as she shares about pregnancy and motherhood on the road, starting her travels with nearly no money, and building a business from scratch. And it’s a reminder that no matter how heavy a life chapter might feel, it’s still possible to find beauty and happiness around you.So if you’re in need of a pick-me-up that doesn’t sugar coat things-- one that gives you permission to both recognize the heaviness of where you’re at, but also one that encourages you to find some beauty around you today-- then you’re in just the right place.Other resources mentioned in this episode:Follow Giddi on Instagram: @earthtogiddiCarteo HandmadeWomen On The Road on Instagram - @womenontheroadJoin the Women On The Road Podcast Facebook groupSponsor Websites & Codes:DannerEnjoy this episode? A timely episode for travelers out there wondering about what decisions to make in light of COVID-19, the novel coronavirus that has caused a global pandemic in recent weeks. Through the voices of two experts-- Registered Nurse Emily Scott and public health emergency planner Kate Pifer-- we navigate both baseline information as well as the challenging nuance of what it means to be a traveler in light of recent world events, while walking away with the message that how and when you travel does truly impact the lives of others.Things feel very heightened right now when it comes to cancellations and travel restrictions, but we could see a time in the future where travel feels safe again even though COVID-19 exists in our communities. The reality is, we don’t really know. So if you’re listening to this episode, we encourage you to do so not only with the next handful of weeks in mind, but with a long-term mindset of what it means to be a responsible traveler and containing the spread of harmful disease, even you yourself don’t feel personally impacted. ** Please note that these interviews were both recorded on Sunday, 3/15 and news, public mandates, and what we know about public health best practices are all evolving rapidly as we learn more about COVID-19 and its impact on the world. When we first connected with part-time van traveler Maggie Lam, it was about a post she had written and we reshared on social media. And it was about small gestures Maggie has experienced during her travels, why they you might not know that they are in fact microaggressions, and why representation of people of color within the road travel community matters. So we wanted to have a conversation with her about those small gestures, which you’ll hear in this episode. Through it all, you’ll also get to hear about the small gestures that truly make a positive impact-- like listening to and amplifying underrepresented voices-- and how you can use your privilege for good, both on the road and when you’re stationary. If you’re looking to learn about how to be a better ally and accomplice for people of color on the road, or if you’re simply looking to hear a perspective you might not have before from a female road traveler, this episode is an especially great listen! In this episode, you’ll hear:How Maggie and her partner spend their year on and off the roadSome background on Maggie’s family story, and how her generation tends to view work and travel compared to her parents’ generationMaggie’s experience turning her current job into a remote oneTips for being an effective remote workerWhat is a microaggression?Examples of microaggressions from Maggie’s experiences on and off the roadTips for people in privileged groups when it comes to avoiding microaggressionsResources mentioned in this episode:Follow Maggie on Instagram - @bitesizetravelsMaggie’s original post on microaggressionsJoin us in the @diversifyvanlifebookclub as we read our first book together: So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma OluoWomen On The Road on Instagram - @womenontheroadJoin the Women On The Road Podcast Facebook groupAdditional resources:What are Microaggressions? via VOXExamples of Racial Microaggressions via University of Minnesota21 Racial Microaggressions You Hear on a Daily Basis via BuzzfeedSponsor Websites & Codes:DannerBetterhelp - get 10% off with promo code ROADCove - visit www.withcove.com/wotr for your first month of migraine medication freeEnjoy this episode? That’s why, when she was ready to adopt a more mobile lifestyle in October of 2017, she found a vintage 1978 Commander motorhome and moved her and her two cats right in, which kicked off not only an adventure on the road, but also an adventure in learning how to work on the 24-foot-long camper she just purchased.Since moving into her RV, Jessy has been a growing voice for taking charge of your own direction, especially when having an older vehicle means that sometimes things break down and in order to get yourself back out there, you have to learn to do things yourself.
