Real vs. Fake Teams with Eric Landes

This week, Dan Neumann is joined by AgileThought colleague, Eric Landes, to discuss real vs. fake teams! Landes, who comes from a DevOps background, originally started out as a developer. Currently, he serves as a Senior DevOps Consultant, ALM Director, and Solutions Architect. In his roles, he helps clients deliver value to customers in their software delivery pipeline, and has extensive experience in leading organizations in adopting agile and lean frameworks, like Scrum and Kanban.   In today’s discussion about real vs. fake teams, Dan and Eric talk about what distinguishes between the two, the benefits to having a real team vs. a fake one, and how you can help enable teams to move from ‘fake’ to real. Tune in to hear it all!   Key Takeaways What distinguishes a real team vs. a fake team? Real teams collaborate while fake teams cooperate Fake teams are groups of individuals that are not behaving together and do not have a shared goal or outcome Real teams have a collective focus, they are catching defects before they happen, and there are code reviews happening in real-time Fake teams observe rather than code in real-time (so they end up with really delayed feedback) Fake teams generally have lots of individuals, working on lots of different problems at the same time (therefore, they’re not really building on each other’s ideas) Real teams have an interest in continuously improving together, whereas fake teams may have a rockstar or two who go after self-improvement where the rest don’t Benefits of having a real team: Faster delivery pattern with higher quality A real team collaborates and keeps the whole team’s focus in check It’s a lot more energizing than working in isolation Benefits of quality and speed and delivery The focus from the accountability you get from being on a team helps eliminate brain distraction Happier employees How to enable teams to move from “fake” to real: Making coding katas or dojos a regular thing for the team If you’re management and the team wants to hone their craft, help enable that Defining the goals for real collaboration beforehand with your team can help enable more effective collaboration Does the team have a goal that makes sense for them? If they don’t, then start there in establishing one When you do have a goal for the team, look at the product backlog and make sure it is structured in a way that enables collaboration In the retrospective, help the team see some things that might be opportunities for improvement that would encourage a collaborative focus   Mentioned in this Episode: Eric Landes (LinkedIn) Agile 2019 Conference Woody Zuill Thinking in Bets: Making Smarter Decisions When You Don't Have All the Facts, by Annie Duke   Eric Landes’ Book Picks: Training from the Back of the Room!, by Sharon L. In this episode Clay Scroggins, author of "How to Lead When You're Not in Charge", walks us through the four behaviors that he’s pinpointed to be able to cultivate influence when you don’t have the title, while preparing you to succeed when the time comes and that title is yours. This truly is one of the most important episodes we’ve done, because this information isn’t really taught in our business, but it can really help aspiring leaders in our industry to improve and make an impact. Clay’s four behaviors are an outline on how to truly become an “A” player at your club and someone that stands out from the pack. Follow them, and you'll be on the path to success. And for those listening that are in a position where we often coach and mentor younger professionals in this business, Clay’s information provides a great framework to help guide us through that process. You can find out more about Clay at www.clayscroggins.com and pick up his book “How to Lead When You’re Not in Charge” on his site or on Amazon.

Why does traffic just seem to stop for no reason then magically clear up? You are sure there must be an accident or construction but there isn’t. So what causes it? We begin this episode with an explanation of that. (https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/06/090608151550.htm)There are 7 deadly sins: pride, envy, gluttony, lust, wrath, greed and sloth. Why are they so tempting? We humans spend our lives trying to resist the lure of sin. So what’s it all for? Jack Lewis author of the book The Science of Sin: Why We Do the Things We Know We Shouldn’t (https://amzn.to/2HVhXhL) joins me for a fascinating discussion on why we are attracted to things that can do us no good and what determines if we resist or give in to temptation. Ever have a chain necklace get all tangled in a knot that is hard to get undone? That is just one of several household emergencies that you’ll hear the solution for in this episode. http://www.goodhousekeeping.com/home/cleaning/g3397/quick-cleaning-fixesfor-everyday-issues/You probably assume that in order to be a leader, you have to have authority – otherwise why should anyone listen to you? Well you don’t, according to my guest Clay Scroggins, author of the book How to Lead When You're Not in Charge: Leveraging Influence When You Lack Authority (https://amzn.to/2UxS7Gc). In this episode, Jeremy Couch provides insights that will help you become a better leader, even when you lack the formal authority to lead others. Adapted from the book How to Lead When You're Not in Charge by Clay Scroggins, four key principles will be discussed to help you learn to lead yourself well first. These four principles are: 1) Lead Yourself. You are in charge of you. 2) Choose Positivity. See the big picture. Trust in God. Be hopeful about the future. 3) Think Critically. Stop being critical. Be constructive. Bring solutions. 4) Reject Passivity. Find something to own and be intentional about making it better. Control what is controllable. Great leaders look ahead to the future and begin to act today to become who they want to be. Listen to this episode and learn some tips that will help you lead well when you're not in charge!

It's the monthly crossover episode with Sarah Bragg of Surviving Sarah, and this month, we're chatting about personal growth. I mean, in between just keeping all my plates spinning I hope I'm growing as a person, at least a little, right? A lot of what contributes to my personal growth are the books I read, the things I listen to, and the products I love. So Sarah and I start out with the books we're reading, and I have a bit of a diatribe about the importance of reading fiction, then we talk about what we're learning right now, and we wrap up with products we're loving. (Between the two of us, we spend an exorbitant amount of time on coffee.) Whether you're totally growing as a person or are already perfect and need no help whatsoever, listen in and lighten up! Life Lessons About Leading When You Are Not In Charge with Clay Scroggins Episode 36: Show Notes. My guest today is one of the pastors of my church, Clay Scroggins.  Clay wrote a book called “How to Lead When You’re Not In Charge, Leveraging Influence When You Lack Authority.”  The book is unique in several ways, it is the story of how he began to lead when he wasn’t in charge and, the reason that really caught my attention, it is a book written for all of us.  Not just the leaders who are already in charge. The wisdom in this book will allow you to start taking charge of things that you may not even realize you are in charge of.  It will help you stand out and grab the attention of those who are in charge.  Simply put, this book will help you advance your position regardless of where you are in the organization.  As Clay says so very well, “you don’t have to have authority of something to be in charge of something.”  All of this being said, Clay is a pastor so there is some scripture in this book.  He draws reference from the bible to help explain his ideas.  If you don’t like that part, don’t let that bother you because the “nuggets of gold” you will find in this book are ones that I have never seen presented to an audience other than existing leaders.  Folk’s this book will help your career and your relationship with your boss! Please enjoy my interview with: Clay Scroggins.   BTW, I mention a lot of books on my show.  Chances are, you listen to this podcast while driving.  So why not read that way?  Try Audible!, It’s safer.  It is also the only way I can read all these books with my job demands.  Learn something in your windshield time, try Audible today!  http://scalinguph2o.com/audible   Links Mentioned in Today’s Episode: Clay Scroggins online: https://clayscroggins.com/#home Clay Scroggins on LinkedIn – https://www.linkedin.com/in/clay-scroggins-5106a16 North Point Community Church: http://northpoint.org/ The Andy Stanley Leadership Podcast: https://andystanley.com/podcasts/ How to Lead When You're Not in Charge: Leveraging Influence When You Lack Authority: http://scalinguph2o.com/howtolead How to Lead When You're Not in Charge Study Guide: Leveraging Influence When You Lack Authority: http://scalinguph2o.com/howtoleadworkbook How to Lead When You're Not in Charge Study Guide with DVD: Leveraging Influence When You Lack Authority: http://scalinguph2o.com/howtoleaddvd Predictable Success: Getting Your Organization on the Growth Track--and Keeping It There: http://scalinguph2o.com/36book1 Mo' Meta Blues: The World According to Questlove: http://scalinguph2o.com/36book2 The Tech-Wise Family: Everyday Steps for Putting Technology in Its Proper Place: http://scalinguph2o.com/36book3
