Artist, Judy Glantzman, is back on the pod this week to discuss her friend and incredible artist, Dawn Clements (1958-2018). Come along with me as I hear more about this brave, innovative artist who celebrated the idea of the ungovernable doodle. Her ink and gouache drawings span walls and rooms, yet she often made them folded up on trains and while lying in bed. It was wonderful to hear Judy's recollections of this artist I have long-admired. Boilers can feel intimidating the first time you step into a boiler room—the heat, the noise, the pressure gauge, and the weight of knowing that mistakes can be costly. Trace Blackmore opens with a reminder that boilers deserve respect, not fear—and that learning fundamentals is how you replace mystique with clarity. The talent gap behind the boiler room door Eric Johnson, Founder and CEO of Boilearn, explains why boiler expertise is becoming harder to replace. He points to the shrinking pipeline of boiler-trained technicians—historically strengthened by Navy steam training—and why companies can't rely on "tribal knowledge" and informal shadowing alone to develop the next generation. Training that scales past the 2–3 day class Eric shares what pushed him to build Boilearn: technicians and operators need structured, repeatable competency systems—not just scattered classes and a "shotgun approach" to on-the-job training. He lays out why fundamentals can be taught effectively online when it's done well, and why travel-heavy training models often spend a large share of the budget on logistics instead of learning. Troubleshooting that starts with fundamentals Troubleshooting is where boiler work can feel like a mystery—until you understand fundamentals and sequence of operations. Eric explains how technicians can isolate problems faster by knowing what should be moving (or not moving), testing one theory at a time, and using electrical diagrams as a practical roadmap when formal sequence documentation isn't available. Better partnerships between boiler techs and water treaters The conversation closes with practical steps that reduce friction and finger-pointing: take photos during inspections, package observations clearly in service reports, communicate directly when possible, and over-communicate inspection schedules so the water treater can prepare the program before the boiler is opened. Listen to the full conversation above. Stay engaged, keep learning, and continue scaling up your knowledge! There are moments when power hesitates — not because it's confused, and not because it's honest — but because it assumes it no longer has to explain itself. This episode of Boiler Room examines that moment.Broadcast live from Central Texas, host Bryan “Hesher” McClain is joined by Adam “Ruckus” Clark for a long-form breakdown of a week defined by narrative overreach, information saturation, and the growing difficulty of separating signal from psychological operations. From escalating rhetoric surrounding Iran and unverifiable reports of mass casualties, to the quiet normalization of AI integration into military systems, to domestic crowd-control preparations and raw political optics caught on camera, the discussion traces a single through-line: modern propaganda no longer collapses cleanly — it blinks. When credibility becomes collateral damage, saturation replaces persuasion, and consent is assumed rather than earned, the cracks begin to show.Topics covered include:Escalation narratives and information warfare surrounding IranViral imagery, casualty claims, and the credibility gap between speed and verificationGrok and the normalization of AI inside military and classified networksTechnocracy, dual-use technology, and the consolidation of powerNational Guard “response forces,” civil unrest planning, and historical precedentMedia degradation, AI-generated deception, and epistemic collapsePolitical optics unraveling in unscripted momentsDisaster narratives, pattern recognition, and the limits of skepticismThis episode is not about debunking individual headlines — it's about recognizing patterns of behavior when authority stops whispering and starts rushing.Boiler Room remains a space for critical analysis, open-source scrutiny, and conversations that resist narrative management — especially when the information environment itself is unstable.Reference Links:Ice Breaker: Matt Damon Says Netflix Wants Plots Reiterated “Three or Four Times in the Dialogue” for Phone-Distracted ViewersPentagon taps Elon Musk's AI “Grok” for military useUS Taxpayers will pay $83 BILLION to build Venezuela's oil infrastructure to benefit oil companies & Israeli billionairesThe allegedly siezed Starlink gear (Iran)Trump got pissed off at heckler with legitimate grievance and gave him the birdTrump's new defense plan quietly creates a National Guard “response force” trained for crowd control and civil unrestDavid Icke on “Wildfires Currently Raging in Argentina's Patagonia Region Could Be A 15-Minute City Arson Job Similar to Malibu and Maui”Can't Trust the internet anymore – Real time AI Deep Fake tech improves to the point of practically indistinguishable Support:Support BOILER ROOM & ACRPatreon (Join and become a member)Shop BOILER ROOM Merch Store

This is part two of a two-part episode. As Detective Robert keeps digging into the case against Darren, more information comes to light and a disturbing picture begins to form. Darren isn't just a womanizer with power. He's a predator operating within the justice system. To stop him, Robert must take on not just the suspect, but the system protecting him. Sergeant Robert has been in law enforcement for over 20 years. Prior to becoming a detective, he spent nine years on patrol, where he served as a Field Training Officer (FTO) and an FBI-trained hostage negotiator. As a detective, he worked in a unit that investigated crimes against children, including sex crimes, serious physical abuse and child homicides. He was later re-assigned to the violent crimes unit, where he investigated homicides, robberies and other serious felonies. He was an active member of his county's major crimes team, which investigated homicides and officer-involved shootings. After 10 years in investigations, Robert was promoted to sergeant.

When Detective Robert opens an investigation into a fellow officer, he doesn't yet realize the scope of what he's about to uncover. The suspect, Darren, is a well-connected cop, and the woman accusing him is terrified to speak out. When she bravely comes forward, the race to stop Darren from continuing to offend is on. This is part one of a two-part episode about police misconduct, ending on a nail-biting cliffhanger. Sergeant Robert has been in law enforcement for over 20 years. Industrial Water Week 2025: Careers Friday brings the celebration back to first principles—mentors, disciplined training, and field diagnostics that go beyond the screen. Trace reflects on the people who invested in his craft, recognizes guest contributors across the week, and issues a practical challenge to invest in one new professional before the day ends. Foundations that Compound A candid mentorship story anchors today's episode. Trace recalls how early-career intimidation turned into decades of teaching fundamentals and math at AWT—proof that asking better questions grows better practitioners. Careers Friday becomes a prompt to text the person who built your foundation—and to be that person for someone else. Fieldcraft Over Flash: A Detective H2O Lesson The Detective H2O case distills high-value diagnostics for cooling systems: TTPC biocide can mask PTSA and fool controllers into overfeeding inhibitor; missing blowdown lockout during biocide feed wastes product; and stabilized bromine can become over-stabilized in long-HTI systems—driving ORP spikes, corrosion risk, and poor microbial control. Technology is essential, but interpretation is the craft. Community Voices and a Career Pledge Careers Friday features greetings from industry professionals and closes with Water You Know, a reminder that water often carries purchased energy (heat, cooling, pressure, flow, pre-treatment) that leaders must account for. The day ends with a clear ask: celebrate your mentors, share your origin story with #IWW25 and #ScalingUpH2O, and pledge to help one newcomer discover industrial water treatment. Durable careers are built on shared knowledge, thoughtful diagnostics, and intentional mentorship. Use today to do all three. Listen to the full conversation above. Explore related episodes below. Boiler rooms reward clarity: how many BTUs from the flame actually arrive in steam—and stay there to do useful work? For Boiler Tuesday, Trace Blackmore, CWT, treats boiler care as heat-transfer management across the full train, from feedwater and deaeration to distribution and condensate return, with dry steam as the operational benchmark. Heat Transfer Is a Leadership Metric Dry steam isn't a detail; it's throughput. Steam on its worst day carries ~1,150 BTUs while hot water on its best day carries ~180 BTUs. When carryover creates wet steam, production loses energy at the point of use. Treating “BTUs-in-steam” as a shared KPI aligns maintenance, operations, and finance around the same outcome: efficient work. The Steam Train: Protect the Interfaces Trace maps the sequence—pretreatment → feedwater/DA → boiler → steam lines → condensate return—and explains where heat transfer is taxed when fouling or poor practices creep in. Recover condensate BTUs, verify deaerator performance, keep tube interfaces clean, and protect dryness at end users. Each interface preserved is energy returned to work. Field Perspectives & Safety Concise greetings from global practitioners reinforce fundamentals and vigilance. Barry Higgins underscores soft, high-quality water for “fluffy steam.” Ivan Morales contrasts OTSGs with conventional boilers and the implications for steam quality. Ben Frieders offers a memorable safety reminder: disciplined restarts and gasket integrity are non-negotiable in steam environments. Boiler Tuesday is a call to manage heat-transfer efficiency, not just chemistry. Protect interfaces, speak in BTUs, and make dryness measurable where the work happens. Stay engaged, keep learning, and continue scaling up your knowledge! In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are joined by Spencer “Boiler” Dunn. Boiler, is a self-described “pro-yapper”, improv leader, former employee of Parks Canada, pie enthusiast, and of course, a backpacker. Spencer takes us through his long trail adventures across Canada, including the Bruce Trail, West Coast Trail, North Coast Trail, and Nootka Island Trail—journeys that brought him face-to-face with some incredible wildlife, from bears to whales to the elusive sea wolf. We also dive into his recent hike on the PCT—how he broke the record for pies per mile, the notoriety that earned him on trail, navigating people's perceptions as a plus-sized hiker, how his trek deepened his connection to his queer identity, and, of course, his unapologetic hatred for gear talk (which I make him do). We wrap the show with news on New Zealand's most famous thru-hike getting a whole lot pricier, tackle the age-old question of which liquids we'd want to dispense from our fingers, we do the Triple Crown of tummy aches, and hear a listener's compelling pitch for taking this circus to the Pacific Northwest. Illini basketball notches their 20th win of the season in epic fashion, riding a 13-1 closing run to take down Purdue 88-80 (their first win over the Boilers since 2021). Mike Carpenter reacts after attending the game at a raucous State Farm Center. For 30+ minutes, Braden Smith and Trey Kaufman-Renn got what they wanted offensively. But, Brad Underwood's team kept plugging away, got crucial stops, and started making shots. Will Riley drops 22, Tre White adds 20, Kylan Boswell with another 15, and Kasparas Jakucionis - despite an up-and-down night - nails a dagger three late in the game. Next up: the Big Ten Tournament.

In today's podcast, Bryan talks with legendary Hydronics author and trainer Dan Holohan about the history of steam heating and some practical applications of old ideas. Recently, Dan has been working on more novels, having published two of them over the past few months. Steam heating is a “lost art” nowadays; it has become increasingly uncommon and has been disappearing since the Vietnam War. Many people who understood steam heating either retired or died after the Vietnam War. Many elements of steam heating are difficult to understand or surprising. (For example, steam pressure has a surprising relationship with velocity: low-pressure steam moves through piping much more quickly than high-pressure steam.) So, Dan Holohan is on a mission to revive that knowledge and teach the newer generations about the lost art. There are many older steam heating systems still operating today, especially in the older large buildings in New York. Dan learned a lot about steam heating when working on these old systems and optimizing them. Most of the time, he optimized those systems by removing unnecessary accessories, not by adding components like steam traps. Many old boilers used coal as a heat source. Nowadays, many old boilers have been fitted with conversion oil burners with thermostats, but they are still piped for coal. Some systems now have multiple risers or massive vents on the main riser to prevent the thermostats from getting too hot too early and satisfying the thermostat too early. We call that master venting, which reduces pressure and allows steam to move very quickly and efficiently. Dan also discusses: The 2-PSI standard Transportation metaphors for BTUs in steam Harmful renovations for old boilers Replacement vs. restoration mindsets Gaps in steam boiler education Monopolizing the market if you HAVE the education Boiler piping and venting Two-pipe vs one-pipe steam Find out more about Dan and hydronic heating at HeatingHelp.com.
