The One Year Devotions For Men ( Page 40 ) 1999, Christian History magazine surveyed its readers and Christian historians.Respondents to the survey were invited to name the five most influential well-knownChristians, By a substantial margin, C.S. Lewis was most often named.Born in Belfast, Ireland, in 1898 to parents who loved books, young "Jack" Lewis became a book lover during childhood, embarked on a scholarly career at Oxford, and became a convinced atheist. Strange beginnings for a man voted the most influential in spiritual growth! In 1929, Lewis discarded his atheism and became a theist-but not happily. He described himself as "a prodigal who is brought in kicking struggling, resentful, and darting his eyes in every direction for a chance of escape."& Jack Lewis was experiencing the love of God drawing him.Two years later, Lewis converted to Christianity. He had been meeting people he admired, only to discover (to his horror) that they were Christians. He had been reading his favorite authors, whom he liked except for their Christianity. But through their influence, his understanding of God grew. He was led to recognize that if God is God, he must be obeyed-not for the sake of reward but simply because he is God. Lewis wrote,"If you ask why we should obey God, in the last resort the answer is, [because God says,]'1 am.'" Lewis insisted that he was no more seeking God than a mouse seeks a cat. But God was seeking him. And he responded, he submitted, and the rest (as they say) is history. We must always remember that the impulse to think about God comes from him, and that the desire to discover truth and beauty and reality is born from him. Jesus said,"People can't come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them to me" (John 6:44).The Lord said through Isaiah, "People who never before inquired about me are now asking about me. I am being found by people who were not looking for me. To them I have said,'I am here!'" (Isa. 65:1).Through the people Jack Lewis met, the books he read, the beauty he saw on his long country walks, and the longing in his own heart for which he found no satisfaction, Lewis eventually heard the Lord say, "I am here." For years he wasn't looking and listening. But once he did, his life became a vehicle through which the Lord began to speak.Every converted life is supposed to be a pulpit from which the Lord proclaims, clearly, to people who may not be listening, "I am here!" 1. A Visible Testimony – A believer's life should reflect God's character, showing love, patience, kindness, and holiness. When people witness a genuinely transformed life, they see evidence of God's work, even if they are not consciously looking for it. 2. Actions Speak Louder than Words – Sometimes, people may not listen to sermons, read the Bible, or pray, but they will notice how a believer lives. Integrity, joy in suffering, selflessness, and unwavering faith in difficulty can proclaim the reality of God more effectively than words alone. 3. God's Presence in Everyday Life – A Christian does not need a physical pulpit to preach. Every interaction, decision, and relationship is an opportunity to reflect Christ. Whether in the workplace, at home, or in casual conversations, a believer's life should communicate, “God is here, and He changes lives.” 4. A Call to Authenticity – This statement is also a challenge to Christians to live in a way that truly reflects their faith. If someone claims to be changed by God but lives no differently from the world, their “pulpit” sends a confusing message.Ultimately, this idea reinforces that conversion is not just about personal salvation—it is about becoming a vessel through which God reaches others. Every transformed life is an unspoken yet powerful declaration: God is real, He is here, and He is still changing lives today.

IN THIS REPEAT - Dr. Hal Poe shares about his bio on the early life of C.S. Lewis in Becoming C.S. Lewis. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ How well do you know C.S. Lewis? You probably don't know Jack as well as you think, until you know his early life. Or more accurately, nearly all of Lewis' interests and tastes were formed in his first twenty years. That is the new book by Dr. Harry Lee (Hal) Poe, entitled Becoming C.S. Lewis examines these early years and shows how his youth influenced his later life and writings. This podcast interview features Dr. Poe explaining how he came to write this book (the first of three) and why knowing Jack Lewis (his friends called him "Jack") is best understood by exploring his formative years. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Buy Becoming C.S. Could we have a season about story without touching on my favourite storyteller, the great Jack Lewis? We could not. Many of us know Lewis as the great author of The Chronicles of Narnia, The Screwtape Letters, or Til We Have Faces. Some of us know him as the everyman theologian who gave us the wartime addresses and Mere Christianity. But there's a lesser-known third part to Lewis: the medievalist. A self-proclaimed dinosaur, Lewis' mind was of another time and this is the secret reason for the richness of his stories. So, we should all be wondering: What is the medieval mind and how did Lewis form one?I'm joined by Dr. Jason Baxter to discuss the medieval mind of C.S. Lewis and how his “breathing the Middle Ages” might be exactly what we need to regain our footing in a world enchanted with truth, goodness, and beauty.Footnotes for this episodeThe Medieval Mind of C.S. What does this 1993 film, based upon the true story of C.S. (Jack) Lewis and his American wife, Joy Davidman, tell us about grief, suffering and love? How is it related to the “problem of evil,” often discussed in philosophical and theological settings? How does the film contrast Lewis's speaking appearances, where he discusses the subject, with the first-person experience he has with his wife's suffering? How do Joy's challenges to Jack's relatively comfortable and cloistered life as an academic foreshadow the starkly raw emotional experience he has with her suffering? What is the point of the contrast? Why does Lewis, while in the depths of grief, compare God to a vivisectionist? In light of that harsh accusation, why does he not lose his faith? How does the tragedy bring him closer to Douglas, Joy's son? What does Lewis make of what he describes as ‘God's silence,' in the aftermath of tragedy? What is symbolized by the painting Jack has in his study of a place called “the Golden Valley,” and how does the film utilize that symbol in its imagery?

We've all done something bad at some point in our lives, but why? This week, we explore how we can quantify a ‘bad' thing, what's going on in our brains when we do something wrong and why sometimes it feels really good to do something we know is a little bit naughty. We also look at how group mentality affects our behaviour and Rick shares a truly awful story about a friend known only as ‘Evil Damien'...Special thanks to today's expert, Dr Jack Lewis. CLICK LINK FOR YOUR OWN COPY Jack Lewis had been in prison for fifteen years, but today was the day he got out on parole. After the bus dropped him off, he was met by his best friend, Charlie Walker, now a deputy sheriff. Charlie offered Jack a ride. When he asked, “Where to?” Jack's reply stunned him: “Gull Cove.” Upon entering his house, Jack discovered a girl named Tamika asleep on the couch. The next day he learned that his sister was the mother of the teen. While the two siblings got reacquainted, Tamika played pool, but the balls kept getting stuck. This prompted Jack to reach his hand into the ball return, where he discovered a blood-stained glove. Detective Delores Parker was called in to investigate, and together she and Jack began trying to identify the real killer. Somebody in Gull Cove didn't want the truth to come out. Jack began receiving threatening phone calls, followed by painted warning messages left on his cars and house. The harassment escalated to exploding cars and even Jack's boathouse. On a cold and rainy night Jack came home to discover someone waiting for him…with a baseball bat. He woke up tied to a chair in his basement watching the real killer pour kerosene around the room. Can Jack survive? Will help arrive in time?

A couple of weeks ago, Armando from Bottom Dwellers Dive Shack podcast hit me up and asked me to join him during an interview with Jack Lewis, perhaps better known by his nomme du guerre "Ambrosia Terrebonne". Jack is a Navy veteran, and earned his dolphins in the Silent Service - America's submarine fleet. Jack left the Navy and became a commercial diver, operating hundreds of feet beneath the surface of the ocean on massive projects where one mistake could cost money and lives. As Jack began to become disenchanted with commercial diving, he ran into a cop at a shooting course and jokingly asked the officer if his agency was hiring. The officer looked at Jack and said "we're aggressively hiring." Jack has served as a police officer ever since, and currently serves as a SWAT officer. Jack is sponsored by Sons of Liberty Gun Works and Staccato, and had nothing but positive things to say about both companies. Find Jack on Instagram @ambrosia_terrebonne or @jack_blueteam Check out Armando and the Bottom Dwellers Dive Shack on Instagram @bottomdwellersds and find his podcast on most major platforms!

“Everything we have, everything that is existing, is just right now. Here in this second. Everything else, the future and the past, we are just constructing with our mind." Ten days of silence. No cellphones or electronics. No reading, writing, Netflix, or any other external stimulation. Ten days of practicing meditation. Sitting cross-legged on a small cushion, walking slower than a sloth, and chanting unknown phrases in Thai. Surrounded by strangers but not asking typical questions like, “Where are you from?" or "How are you doing today?” Not interacting more than a smile, frown, or casual, “What's up” head nod. This is the setting Jan Lachs and Yannick Klijnsma lived in for ten days at Wat Ram Poeng in Chiang Mai, Thailand. On today's episode of the Edge of Comfort Podcast, my co-host Jack Lewis and I talk with Jan and Yannick about their eye-opening meditation retreat despite them having no prior experience, practice or knowledge. “Why the hell would anyone do this?” This is what my father texted me when I asked friends, family, and listeners if they had any questions for Jan and Yannick. While it made me laugh, it's a valid question. Why would anyone willingly subject themselves to 10-days of silence and deep thinking despite never doing something like this before? With a daily schedule that involves things like... waking up at 4:00am eating two spicy rice-based meals questioning every thought and feeling you have appearing as if you are part of a cult you'll probably ask yourself this question again. I'll try to answer this without spoiling too much of the podcast. Thoughts are constantly flowing through our minds day in and day out. Thoughts can distract us from the present moment and people we are with. They can cause us to suffer in imagination. They can seem like a never ending trail in our minds, like water flowing through a river. Our thoughts can also be beneficial in our examination and understanding of ourselves. Understanding why we feel certain ways, experience different emotions, and recognizing when we are unfocused or distant. Meditation serves to help us better understand these internal and mental feelings. To let the mind relax from the constant flow of thoughts, to regain focus, recharge, and allow us to examine ourselves. What better way to do this then by removing everything that takes us away from ourselves so we are forced to begin this examination? Thus, a ten day silent meditation retreat. Jan and Yannick expand on this much better than I can. Jack and I both walked away from the interview feeling like we'd discovered a whole new realm in the world. I hope your mind will be opened up as well. Thank you so much Jan and Yannick for sharing, and thank you for listening! Relax your mind, relax your body, focus on your breath, and enjoy the episode...
