Fear of missing out is real and if we are honest it doesn't just affect teenagers. Many of us struggle with comparison and feel that everyone must be happier than we are. I related a lot to swirling thoughts keeping you awake. You've said FOMO is one of the main things that kept you awake at night! When did you first become aware of that tendency? Why do you think so many of us struggle to process emotions? It's one thing to realize we need change... How did you start creating change in your life? Something you said struck me... "Creativity combats comparison and leads to feelings of happiness." Can you tell us about that? How has curiosity led to happiness for you? It's vital to shift ourselves, but how can we also shift as communities? Have you ever asked the question, "Does anyone like me?" Maybe people used to like you, but you are wondering if they do now. Or maybe your son or daughter is asking that question. Few admit they have these thoughts, and even less talk about them out loud. We're changing that! Today on the podcast we are discussing the topic of feeling liked and building friendships. We explore the middle school mentality that often resurfaces in adulthood, the impact of transitions on confidence, and the transfer of insecurities from failed relationships. You will learn how many hours it takes to build a new friendship and what we can do to open ourselves up to new relationships. Midlife can shift our friendships - we're here to help! FIND OUT MORE ABOUT SARAH Website: sarahbragg.com Instagram: sarahwbragg Sarah's Book- Is Everyone Happier Than Me? KEY TAKEAWAYS: The middle school mentality of questioning whether people like us often resurfaces in adulthood, especially during times of transition. Being introspective and self-aware can help us recognize and address our insecurities and negative patterns of thinking. Building friendships takes time, with casual friendships requiring 40-60 hours, and deeper friendships requiring over 200 hours of quality time together. Being open to new friendships, even on a casual level, can lead to meaningful connections and a sense of belonging. Noticing the good in ourselves and approaching relationships with curiosity and compassion can enhance our ability to build and maintain friendships. QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU RISE Has there been a season or circumstance where you have been more prone to feeling like no one likes you? How could you focus on showing how much you enjoy others around you today, rather than focus on how others feel about you? What are some qualities you have that make you a good friend? How could you convey a posture of openness to others around you today as you are out in the world?
In an age where everyone else's successes are flaunted in front of you on social media, it can be a struggle to feel true happiness and contentment exactly where you are. Throw in difficult circumstances--loss, heartbreak, change, midlife--and it's easy to understand why you feel lonely, lost, unsure of yourself, stuck, and, if you're honest with yourself, flat-out unhappy. Sarah Bragg is on today's episode chatting about her book Is Everyone Happier Than Me? She provides practical and relatable answers to the questions you've probably already been asking about your life, and poses a few more, to help you figure out what's standing in the way of your happiness, peace, and connection. Join us as Sarah shares the valuable lessons she's learned in her own hard seasons to help you: Identify the unhealthy habits you do when you feel unhappy and how to overcome them. Discover simple ways to find peace even in the murky middle of hard seasons. Find new ways to connect with others and yourself. Embrace exactly where you are even as you try to move forward. It's time to let go of the ideal of a perfect life and allow yourself to be a work in progress. And there's no better time to find happiness than right here in the middle. My Story: Finding my voice. My twenties were categorized as driven and successful. My resume boasted of working for influential organizations. I was a popular communicator traveling across the globe to speak to students. And I became an author at the young age of 27. But then, I turned 30, had kids, faced some rejection and was felt like I had peaked in life. Where the twenties were driven with confidence, my thirties felt like a lonely space. Having accomplished so much in life to that point, I wondered if this was it. I felt like there was a formula to life, a certainty to things. But my thirties proved that life was more uncertain than I had believed. In those years, I longed to communicate with women again. I longed to connect with others through conversation. In October of 2015, the podcast, Surviving Sarah, was born. It was to be a place where I could use my voice again to help other women know they aren't alone. It was a place where I could help women survive right where they are—in their life, their relationships, their work and their faith. After years of living and learning, I wrote a new book about how motherhood has raised me. “A Mother's Guide to Raising Herself: What Parenting Taught Me About Life, Faith and Myself” is a guide that captures that journey of realizing that as I was parenting my girls, I was actually parenting myself. In 2024, I released my next book: “Is Everyone Happier Than Me? An Honest Guide to the Questions That Keep You up at Night.” This book is an honest look at the questions we ask in midlife. It's a book that helps us navigate those questions and hopefully discover how to find a sense of happiness, peace and connection right where we are. Now, my forties are categorized as a different confidence—a confidence in the journey of discovering who I am and stepping confidently into that person. It's a journey defined by curiosity and surrendering to the uncertainty of it all. And as Anne Lamont says, “The opposite of faith is not doubt, it's certainty.” By embracing the uncertainty with curiosity, my faith has been reconstructed. “Curiosity is the opposite of certainty. Curiosity isn't about right or wrong or should or shouldn't. Sarah's Story: Finding my voice. A Mother's Guide to Raising Herself: What Parenting Taught Me About Life, Faith and Myself is a guide that captures that journey of realizing that as I was parenting my girls, I was actually parenting myself. This is a conversation that I fully, completely believe in and plan to have FAR more often. On today's episode with Sarah Bragg, author of A Mother's Guide to Raising Herself, we discuss the importance of not losing yourself within your motherhood, but rather growing INTO yourself. Jesus prunes us as we raise our little ones, mamas. The Wife Project FINAL LAUNCH is on November 7th! Don't miss it! Sign up for the waitlist today! He grows us just as much as we work to raise our little ones up well during our time together. But the question that I want to challenge you with today is: are you willing to be sanctified in your motherhood? Are you willing to fight for your own mental health rather than giving up and giving in? Sarah and I are honest and vulnerable in this conversation as we discuss the struggles that we've had within our own parenting, how it's never too late to change your parenting style and how I'm navigating that in my own life right now, why showing up on the days when you're burnt out is more than enough and how to deal with pressure from family members when they tell you how to raise your own children. This week on Real Talk with Rachael I'm talking to author Sarah Bragg about her new book A Mother's Guide to Raising Herself. Sarah is also the host of the podcast Surviving Sarah. Along with being a master at brewing coffee and a champion of cheering for others, she is also a mother of two girls and a wife to Scott. She and her family reside in Tennessee. Key Points from Our Conversation: There's a lot of pressure that comes along with believing motherhood is your calling. If it is the greatest thing we can ever do, what about the women who don't/can't have children? What happens when your kids grow up? Raising kids is valuable, but it doesn't have to be a pressure point. It's a relationship. Perfectionism tells us that if we follow the formula and it doesn't work, it must be us. You have to get to the heart of who you are and what your kids need. Be aware of your tendency for perfectionism and don't use it as an affirmation of your worth. Pay attention to your "should soundtrack." When you feel like you should do something, let it be an indicator to investigate further. Is that something that's important or you want to do? Why do you feel pressure to do it? Fear isn't a bad thing, but you can't let it drive you. Choose curiosity over judgment. Choose to trust in God. Staying focused on your goals will give you perspective. The best way to communicate with girls about body image is by modeling healthy behaviors and appreciating your body for what it is. Raising girls helped Sarah realize how her self-obsession with looks affected others and gave her perspective on how absurd the goals were that she had set for herself. Stop comparing yourself to other women – including your former self. If we can accept where we are, there's a freedom that follows. Showing up is enough. Let's Get Real Practical: This week we're evaluating our "should soundtrack." What areas of your life do you feel defeated in? When you look at those areas, are you “shoulding” on yourself? Where did those "shoulds" come from? Episode sponsor: Download the 3 Action Steps to Overcome Fear & Pursue your God-Given Dreams FREE training today! Are you raising daughters and wondering if you are doing it right? Today I am talking with author Sarah Bragg about raising preteen and teenage daughters. We jump into the show talking about failure and how that is part of life and why it's important to teach our girls that it's ok to fail. Sarah also shared with us how it's critical to understand our children developmentally, ideally before they get to that next stage. Make sure to check out the show notes with several website resources for learning about developmental stages. We also talk about body image that pertain to not only our daughters but to us and how to navigate that in the most healthy way. One topic that stood out to me is when Sarah told me about her eating disorder that she had as a child and how it stemmed from a comment regarding her weight from a kid at party. Hear what she has to say about this topic and more on the podcast. Today, I wanted to round out book launch week with an episode just from me. I also wanted to include one more chapter from the audiobook as a way of celebrating. This has been a good week. If you subscribe to the newsletter or follow on Instagram then you probably know that our family got hit with Covid about two weeks ago. Scott and I were vaccinated but Sinclair hadn't received hers yet. And after 3 days of school, she tested positive. So we spent book launch in isolation at home. Going into it, I was quite disappointed. I had fun things planned for the whole day which all had to be cancelled. But once the day came, I have to say that while the day at home was very quiet and normal—the girls did digital learning, Scott worked—the day online felt very extraordinary. The day was filled with you guys showing up and celebrating with me online. You shared the book over and over. That simple action of sharing the book (or even the show) may seem so little but I promise you that it feels so big to me. It was so fun to see the book top the amazon new release in motherhood charts. It also hit the best seller list for the motherhood category. I was just overjoyed. I just wanted to say thank you for showing up. Thank you for buying the book. Thank you for cheering for me.
