Josh, Astrid, and Reid are back covering One Piece volumes 4 and 5, giving their most generous possible read of the Syrup Village arc. On the docket today is Usopp's character breakdown (and whether he's actually interesting or not), the surprising poignance of the Usopp pirates, half-baked race themes, subtle character development, and Sanji's oh-so-delicious pilaf. /// A small note: If you like the series, spread the word and give our PayPal link a look. Text me a message!Today's episode comes to you from Chittenden Vermont where we visit with Baird Farm. If you've heard of them you may recognize that they are NOT a diversified vegetable farm. They are a medium scale maple producer with about  15,000 taps. Vermont is known for its maple but what makes them unique is that 90% of their volume is sold directly to the consumer. They lean heavily on online sales, and agritourism for their retail business. Like most of my shows the first hour features a walking tour where Jacob and Jenna provide an overview of maple production and what it looks like on their farm. We walk to the woods to see some trees and sap lines, pop our heads in a pump house then tour seeing the sugar house which includes the bottling room and retail area.  Once we've gotten the lay of the land we then pull up a stool in the farm stand. Jenna's Dad, Bob, also known as the Syrup Daddy joins us for the conversation to share some insights to his history of Vermont agriculture and how it's transitioned over the years into the business it is today. Support the showVisit the website to see photos/videos from the visit: https://thefarmersshare.comFollow the show on Facebook and Instagram: @thefarmersshareSubscribe to the YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@thefarmersshare

Isn't smoking bad for you? Yes…but the conversation around smokable herbs may be more nuanced than you think. In this episode, I'm joined by herbalist and founder of Puff Herbals, Lian Bruno, for a grounded, thoughtful conversation about smokable herbs—especially mullein (Verbascum spp.). While many herbalists shy away from this topic, Lian approaches it through a lens of harm reduction, compassion, and what she calls “holistic hedonism.”LIan explores why mullein has long been used in smoking blends, how formulation dramatically changes the smoking experience, and why all-or-nothing thinking can make conversations about smoking harder, not safer. This episode isn't a blanket endorsement of smoking, nor is it a how-to guide. Instead, it's an invitation into nuance: understanding energetics, honoring ritual, and supporting people exactly where they are.During our conversation, Lian shares her recipe for Lung Lube, a syrup that offers both immediate relief and long-term support for lungs irritated by smoke or sickness. You can download your beautifully-illustrated recipe card here.By the end of this episode, you'll know:► Four reasons mullein is considered a classic smokable herb► Why mullein should rarely be smoked alone (and what to pair it with)► How smokable herbs can serve as a bridge for reducing nicotine or cannabis use► How to formulate a smoking blend with intention, matching plant energetics to your desired effect► Eighteen examples of smokable herbs—and the reasons you might include them in a smoking blend► and so much more…For those of you who don't know her, Lian Bruno is a clinically-trained herbalist, holistic health educator, writer, and founder of Puff Herbals — a brand redefining smoking rituals with tobacco-free, cannabis-free herbal alternatives. With a background in ethnobotany, she blends science, storytelling, and subculture into smoking blends designed for modern rituals.Rooted in harm reduction and what she calls holistic hedonism, Puff Herbals makes herbalism approachable for anyone looking to light up — from the sober-curious and wellness-obsessed to skeptics and smokers looking to quit or cut back.Whether or not you ever work with smokable herbs, I hope this conversation encourages curiosity over judgment and reminds you that herbalism is ultimately about relationship — with plants, with our bodies, and with one another.----Get full show notes, transcript, and more information at: herbswithrosaleepodcast.comWould you prefer watching this episode? Sugaring isn't just for the Northeast anymore. And the truth is — there are opportunities for food, resources, and self-sufficiency sitting right in our own backyards… if we're willing to look a little closer. In this episode of The Homestead Education Podcast, Kody Hanner sits down with David Knudson of Montana Maple Works to talk about the surprising world of tapping trees for syrup in the Western U.S. — and what it really takes to turn sap into something usable, valuable, and even profitable. From tapping city trees to navigating regulations, building a business from scratch, and teaching others along the way — David shares how curiosity turned into a full-blown maple syrup operation, and what that means for homesteaders and families looking to learn new skills. From understanding tree types and sap flow to the reality of how much work goes into a single gallon of syrup — this episode breaks down both the science and the practicality behind it all. This isn't just about maple syrup. It's about recognizing the resources around you — and learning how to use them. If you care about: Learning practical, real-life homesteading skills Alternative ways to source sugar and natural resources Small-scale production and turning skills into income Understanding trees, seasons, and natural systems Building resilience and self-sufficiency at home This episode will open your eyes to what's possible — even in places you might not expect. In This Episode, We Cover: How maple syrup production works — from sap to finished product Why the West hasn't traditionally tapped trees (and why that's changing) What types of trees can be tapped beyond sugar maples The realities of sap-to-syrup ratios and production time How David built a business from a simple idea The challenges of regulations and accessing trees Why learning skills like this matters for long-term self-sufficiency

And if you have a cat, make sure you know where your hair ties are at all times. If you enjoy listening to your devices without headphones on air flights, then you shouldn't fly United, plus fast-food chains have been ranked, and I have the results. Do you take medication for irritable bowel syndrome? Then don't let the cops see it, and a guy stole someone's septic tank; which begs the question, why would anyone do that? It's your lucky day, the federal government is about to release secret files about aliens, and what's the dumbest way you have been injured. It's hard to believe, but I have all these answers.

Randy shares how a childhood experiment with a few buckets and spouts grew into one of the region's premier maple operations, tapping more than 3,000 trees across an 853-acre sustainably managed forest.Along the way, we explore how maple sugaring has evolved from the bucket-and-horse days to modern tubing systems, vacuum collection, and reverse osmosis technology that dramatically improves efficiency while protecting the trees. You'll also hear how maple syrup's flavor develops, why darker syrups often win taste tests, and how producers transform sap into everything from maple candy to bourbon barrel-aged syrup. And if you're planning a spring trip to the Adirondacks, Randy gives us a great preview of Thurman Maple Days — one of the region's sweetest seasonal events. What you'll hear in this episodeHow Toad Hill Maple Farm grew from a childhood hobby into a large-scale maple operationWhat actually happens inside a maple tree that makes sap flow in springBuckets vs. tubing systems — how technology changed maple productionWhy it takes roughly 40 gallons of sap to make one gallon of syrupThe science behind reverse osmosis and modern evaporatorsMaple syrup grades explained: golden delicate, amber rich, dark robust, and very dark strongWhy darker syrups often have stronger maple flavor and win taste testsMaple products beyond syrup: candy, cream, granulated sugar, and maple caramel cornThe rise of infused maple products, including bourbon barrel-aged syrupHow maple producers manage forests sustainably for long-term productionWhat to expect at Thurman Maple Days and why it's a must-visit Adirondack eventResources:Visit The Toad Hill Maple Farm WebsiteCrane MountainNettle Meadow FarmThurman Maple Days - 3 Weekends in MarchProduced by NOVA

This episode is for founders, brand builders, and retail leaders interested in how a genuinely accidental business becomes a credible, structured consumer brand. Lucie McLeod started Hair Syrup in her parents' conservatory while at university, posted one TikTok video that hit 600,000 views, and built from there — without a business plan, without investment, and without a roadmap. However this is no tale of luck, or a hapless fortune. To listen to Lucie it's clear that the brain, drive and character were ready for the tasks, the test and the chance to build her business. Cometh the hour, cometh the leader.Ian Jindal chats with Lucie about what it actually takes to grow a DTC brand through social, how to respond to a very public rejection on Dragon's Den and turn it into a marketing moment, and where Hair Syrup is heading as it moves from a single hero product into a full wash-day brand with retail distribution through Boots.Key themesAccidental origin, deliberate growth: Hair Syrup started as a personal solution to Lucie's own scalp problems, formulated using academic research and natural ingredients she sourced from health food shops. The first TikTok video was not a launch strategy. It was a genuine personal post that went viral from a standing start. The business followed the demand, not the other way around.Problem-led product development: Every product in the range maps to a specific, common hair or scalp problem — length, grease, breakage, dandruff. This was not a range strategy imposed from above; it was Lucie solving her own problems and extending outward. When she eventually worked with a chemist, he told her the formulas she had developed independently were already production-ready.Community over clinical claims: Hair Syrup has clinical efficacy data and dermatologist testing, but its primary marketing tool is customer before-and-after photos. Lucie is explicit that she dislikes prescriptive beauty content and avoids invalidating individual experiences. The community is built on openness and expectation management, not on performance guarantees.Dragon's Den as a marketing asset: Hair Syrup appeared on Dragon's Den in summer 2024, received six rejections, and then turned the episode's broadcast in January 2025 into one of the most-discussed brand moments of the year. The team trolled the dragons back on TikTok with memes — the sad hamster among them — generating 24 million profile views in under 48 hours and 100,000 new followers. The Sunday Times named Lucie Young Founder of the Year shortly after. The lesson she draws is blunt: you cannot engineer this. It worked because it was authentic. The hidden operation: The public face of Hair Syrup is Lucie on TikTok — informal, funny, behind-the-scenes. The private face is an SLT with experienced heads of sales, finance, and logistics, an in-house 3PL, and chemists with serious CVs. Most of their audience has no idea the latter exists. Lucie considers this balance a strength.Brand building beyond the hero product: Hair Syrup launched in Boots in late 2024. The NPD pipeline is structured around extending the brand's core peppermint oil product into a full wash-day system — shampoo, conditioner, scalp serum — all sharing the same scent, colour scheme, and purpose. Leave-in oils have not landed as hoped and are being rethought. The direction is deliberate specialisation rather than category sprawl.⠀What you'll learnWhy solving a genuine personal problem is still one of the most defensible starting points for a consumer brand. How to build a community that stays loyal even when the product does not work for everyone. What a rejection on Dragon's Den can teach you about the gap between conventional investment logic and TikTok-native brand value. How to structure a post-crisis response for a team that is depending on you, when you are not sure yourself what comes next. How to maintain creative authenticity and brand character while building a grown-up operational structure behind the scenes. Why gut instinct and structured decision-making are not opposites — and how to use both at the same time.⠀Chapter structureIntroduction — Who Lucie is, Hair Syrup's age and origin, and what the brand stands for todayThe accidental start — A personal hair problem, lockdown, a viral TikTok from a standing start, and the slow realisation that this could be a businessFormulation and early product range — Research, chemistry, working with a professional chemist, and extending the range along problem linesBrand positioning — Accessible, inclusive, mid-market, solution-driven, and community-centredDragon's Den — Six rejections, the edit, what it felt like, the conversation with the team, and the decision to turn it aroundThe TikTok counter-offensive — Trolling the dragons, the sad hamster meme, the BBC's reaction, 24 million views in 48 hoursStructure and scale — What Hair Syrup actually looks like behind the TikTok page, and the role of a senior leadership team the audience never sees2026 and beyond — Boots, NPD, the wash-day range, international ambitions, and staying open to where the brand might go⠀About the guestLucie McLeod is the founder and CEO of Hair Syrup, a UK haircare brand she started at 21 while studying at the University of Warwick, where she graduated with a first. She began by hand-making pre-wash hair oils in her parents' conservatory and built the brand through TikTok before establishing a wider social and retail presence. Hair Syrup now sells through Boots as well as direct-to-consumer, runs an in-house 3PL operation, and has a senior team spanning sales, finance, logistics, and product development. She was named Sunday Times Young Founder of the Year following the brand's Dragon's Den appearance in early 2025, in which she received six rejections and subsequently turned the episode into a widely covered brand marketing moment.Quotes"I was ignoring all of the signs. I had people saying, you could sell me this, and I think if I was an entrepreneur, my business brain would have thought, right, I'll take 20 quid, let's do it.""The moral of the story is make the best of a bad situation. The moral is not: try and do really badly so you can redeem yourself.""Behind the curtain, it's a really serious operation — with a lot of extremely skilled people dealing with distributors, international expansion, NPD, chemists with impressive CVs. And people just have no idea.""I wonder if I didn't have a team, if I was doing this by myself — might I have given up?""I don't like the idea that brands ever have to be pigeonholed. As long as you're open, honest, transparent and reactive, you can enjoy the ebbs and flows."--  Run time: 44 minutesINFORMATION:[

Brian Shactman discusses the maple syrup industry with Rob Lamothe from Lamothe Sugar House in Burlington, highlighting the misconception that maple syrup is only produced in Vermont. Rob explains the optimal conditions for sap flow and the process of making syrup, noting a 43:1 sap-to-syrup ratio and the use of reverse osmosis to reduce water content. He details advancements in technology, such as plastic tubing and vacuum systems, which have improved efficiency. Demand for pure maple syrup has risen by 8-10% annually, driven by health-conscious consumers. Rob's syrup is available at various retailers and his sugar house, with a showroom open six days a week.

In this episode recorded live at our Live Uncut event, Richard Hill sits down with Lucie , founder of Hair Syrup, to unpack one of the most inspiring eCommerce success stories of the past five years. What started as a personal solution to hair problems in a Warwick University student kitchen has exploded into an 8-figure business that became the most viral hair care brand on TikTok globally. Lucie walks us through the moment she realized Hair Syrup was going to be massive, her unconventional journey from mixing oils with measuring spoons to managing 7 hours of meetings daily while staying creative, and why her Dragons' Den rejection turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to her business. She explains how she reduced TikTok Shop revenue from 49% to less than 23% through strategic diversification, her unconventional hiring philosophy of not hiring people who've had traditional jobs, and why content creation should come naturally if you're in the right role. This episode covers the untold story of what really happened on Dragons' Den including footage that never aired, why Steven Bartlett's concerns about platform dependency were valid but the exposure was priceless, going viral for three consecutive weeks after the show and turning down 60 investors who reached out, shifting TikTok from revenue driver to brand awareness touchpoint, the power of Meta ads, email marketing, SMS campaigns, gift with purchase strategies, and in-person events for building a DTC brand, managing the balance between operational meetings and creative work as a founder, and why the Goldman Sachs 10KSB program transformed her business more than any book could. Lucie's story proves that sometimes the best businesses aren't meticulously planned, they find you. With no formal business training, no business books read, and starting with just a few hundred pounds, she's built a beauty empire that rivals established brands globally. Whether you're in eCommerce, building a DTC brand, managing social media strategy, or fascinated by modern entrepreneurship, this episode is packed with tactical insights on platform diversification, content creation at scale, viral marketing, and building a brand that resonates deeply with customers.
