But I was so pumped to record about this topic, I couldn't wait (while Josh drove). In today's episode, we tackle a crucial aspect of salon ownership – the continuous flow of new business. It's a topic that sparked quite a debate on my Instagram, but I firmly believe in its importance. Whether you run a commission salon or a rental space, attracting new clients is key to sustainability and growth. I share a thought-provoking conversation with a salon owner about this, emphasizing that driving new business is not just about profitability but about being an effective leader and shaping a thriving salon culture. It's about being more than just a stylist or a service provider; it's about being a visionary for your business. I discuss the sometimes controversial subject of building clientele for renters. I believe it's a shared responsibility, a symbiotic relationship where everyone plays a part in the salon's success. Clear agreements and expectations are vital, whether you're dealing with rental, commission, or hybrid models. As salon owners, it's our job to guide and support our team, creating an environment where everyone can flourish. It all boils down to how much you want your salon to succeed and your willingness to do whatever it takes. And for those of you looking to grow your business without adding extra hours behind the chair, stay tuned for the unveiling of the new Salon Quarterly – it's going to be a game-changer (link below)! Ken Eslick is a seasoned entrepreneur and a leadership expert in the recruiting industry. In this episode, Ken shares his remarkable journey from a kid with a knack for leadership to a professional recruiting leader. His experiences range from an epiphany in a Carl's Jr. parking lot that led him to the military, to 14 years in the corporate world, and ultimately a decade in recruiting. Ken candidly discusses his personal struggles as well as his distaste for corporate red tape. Ken also shares his experiences in the military and how they shaped him into the leader he is today. Ken and Tony talk about the lessons learned from basic training, the importance of military values, and why we shouldn't dismiss the corporate world's merits. Then, Tony and Ken share how they utilized their corporate experience in their own businesses. They stress the importance of organizational charts, balance sheets, communication strategies, and the value of "shamelessly stealing" best practices from large corporations to ensure success in small businesses. The discussion further explores two models for recruiting professionals - retained and contingent, the concept of leadership, and how it creates an environment for people to perform at their highest level. Listen in as they discuss the importance of not paying in advance for anticipated results and the necessity of personal growth, a thirst for knowledge, and an openness to change. Don't miss when they cover the power of a growth mindset and the importance of taking action to overcome fear. The co-founder and chief innovation officer of the Nasdaq-listed sneaker brand reflects on how his previous career in sports prepared him professionally and personally for leading a company through both the highs and the lows. Background: When Tim Brown stepped away from his role as co-chief executive at Allbirds in May, the footwear retailer that he co-founded seven years ago was losing its sheen as the sustainability-focused direct-to-consumer darling that once enraptured investors. Its first full-year results since its Nasdaq flotation in November 2021 revealed a series of setbacks, from a poorly executed expansion into adjacent products like apparel to losing relevance with its core customers, leading to net losses of $101.35 million. The testing of Allbirds' team since the IPO has often seemed relentless yet, according to Brown, it's an opportunity to draw on inner strengths to excel as a leader. “[R]ising and falling is just a part of the journey,” he wrote in a recent post on LinkedIn in which he also shared an article by a team of business reporters that laid bare Allbirds' challenges. Rather than criticising the article, he said he saw it as a reminder that “you are never as good or as bad as they say you are (this helped me a lot during my football career), and that all of my best work has come when I've been written off.”This week on The BoF Podcast, Brown speaks with BoF founder and editor-in-chief Imran Amed on how his journey from the football pitch to the corporate boardroom has shown him why leaders of young brands like him need to keep a resilient entrepreneurial mindset even in adversity.Key Insights:The football pitch served as a training ground to cope with “an even more pressurised environment as an entrepreneur,” Brown said. “Sport teaches you to trust the process and to hold a long-term view, knowing that in the fullness of time that hard work usually is rewarded,” he said.Brown believes entrepreneurs need to find time to take stock, even if it means not working “100%” all of the time. “The most important thing that I've learned as an entrepreneur is not to confuse hard work with the right work.” he said. “You have the ability to maintain your focus on something for a longer period of time by just pulling back a little bit. And that space allows you the perspective to see something for what it is, which is a journey with steps forward and steps back.”When reflecting on the setbacks Allbirds has faced in recent times, Brown said that instead of searching to understand what he could have done differently, he wants to look forward. The key now, he said, is “get really, really clear on the things that we do better than anyone is the process that we're in.”Additional Resources:Tim Brown on Allbirds' Sustainable Footwear Revolution: Allbirds co-founder and co-CEO discusses how his high-risk strategy has created a sustainable brand that is disrupting the established footwear market. The Rise and Fall of Allbirds: The sneaker brand's comeback plan includes refocusing on its core consumer and a carbon-negative shoe. About Miriam Plotinsky Miriam Plotinsky is an instructional specialist with Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland, where she has taught and led for more than 20 years. She is the author of Teach More, Hover Less, Lead Like a Teacher, and Writing Their Future Selves (W.W. Norton & Company). She is also a National Board–Certified Teacher and a certified administrator. What You'll Find in this Educational Leadership Podcast Episode with Miriam Plotinsky Miriam says that her new book--Lead Like a Teacher--was pretty much an accident. She simply found that the schools with more teachers at the table had stronger cultures. She talked about teachers' misconception of school leaders as well as school leaders' misconception of teachers. She called this “the empathy gap.” Miriam points out that “if you don't know the story, you'll create one. And, it might be wrong.” Miriam acknowledges that we often learn from the models we have around us, which is only a good thing when the model is effective. Otherwise it works against us. Hear Miriam discuss why visibility is so critical for a school leader. Miriam gave us some insights into how the book unfolds, including what she calls “macro” and “micro” aspects of school leadership. She calls for more classroom visits. We couldn't agree more. Don't miss what she says about “Wait Time 1” and “Wait Time 2” as both teaching and leadership strategies. We can't disagree with talking less to learn more. Miriam mentions Twitter as a place to go to find like-minded people and new ideas. She identifies some well known and not so well known resources that are valuable for all educators. She points to Teachers Going Gradeless as a cool organization. She also calls out Edutopia and ASCD as well as Solution Tree as great resources. Miriam uses the ten-minute reset each day to make sure that she does something that she loves. Tune into what she says about movement and breaks. She talks about being a “dabbler” in a bunch of things, and she wants to learn how to write more nonfiction. And, we all agreed to learn how to be more funny. Joe reflects on the need to get more people involved early in our process for any given initiative. Don't miss what she used to think about those who wanted to go into administration and how her perspective has changed. This installment of The Axis Effect features Thomas Yionoulis, Founder of OpsAnalitica. As the world's economy grows, so do the businesses that inhabit it. But a growth in size can make a business significantly harder to manage. Using gathered data from clients, OpsAnalitica can help client companies identify problems and solve them, in some cases even before they happen, even when leaders can't be on each company site 24/7. Yionoulis discusses the potential of software in data analytics and how OpsAnalitica digitizes company information from employees across multiple sites, allowing corporate leaders to manage all sites right from their smartphones. When we think of worship leading, we often think about stages and bands and large crowds and technology. But sometimes worship is led in a home, or apartment, or around a camp fire. In this episode, Austin reflects on his most recent worship leading journey...leading in his home with only 15 people in attendance. Some things about leading remain the same, but many of them change.

Want to become more heart-centered? We invite you to join us on Deb's Dailies (daily blog and newsletter), a daily reflection on living and loving life as a heart-centered leader.Rod Anderson is a Chief Operations Officer in the giftware and apparel space. On the surface it may not seem like 30 years of experience in Automotive parts manufacturing, power transformers, and electric heat appliances would make someone a good fit for the world of seasonal gifts and female fashion but below the surface is a journey that has made Giftcraft Ltd. the perfect place for Mr. Anderson to be the right COO at the right time. The journey started in 1991 at a small GTA-based Tier 1 automotive components manufacturer. While there, his Mechanical Engineering background allowed him to transition into various roles during a period when the company's revenue grew organically by over 50x under private ownership. Growing a business rapidly and organically meant wearing many hats, developing many talented people, and being willing to take on any assignment while learning and doing at the same time. After serving in multiple roles, transforming parts of the business, and playing a key role in the sale of the business twice to private equity investors, it was time to take 18 years of experiences and find out if they were transferrable. In 2009 Canduct Industries was a small niche power transformer business started in the early 90s by an entrepreneur on the strength of a single product. The owner had grown the business organically based on his technical expertise but no longer had the ability to continue growing his business. Rod was recruited by the owner to build and execute a growth strategy that would allow the owner to be hands-off except for technical input. Over the next 10 years, the business grew by 4x, acquired 3 other businesses in the sector, and reorganized into 2 product-focused divisions. Rod joined Glen Dimplex Americas in 2019 where sales growth was already underway but the organization was struggling to execute at the Operations level. Rod spent 3 years with Glen Dimplex re-organizing the supply chain, building a more efficient distribution network, assuming control of the Product Engineering process, and expanding domestic manufacturing capacity. Although there was more to do, Rod Anderson the builder realized that the ideal place for his skills was in small to medium-sized enterprises struggling to break through the growth ceiling. In 2022 Rod was recruited by Giftcraft Inc., a wholesale consumer products business that had recently been sold by the founding family to private equity investors. The newly added CEO was looking for a COO with a very specific skill set. One with experience in rapid growth environments, M&A experience on both sides of the table, someone that could design and implement business operating systems, develop people, and drive efficiencies. One year in, the journey is already an exciting one and a very eye-opening experience.Connect with Rod at:* https://www.giftcraft.com/* https://www.linkedin.com/in/rod-anderson-877483b/* https://www.instagram.com/giftcraft.ltd/* https://www.facebook.com/GiftsLtd/* https://www.youtube.com/user/GiftcraftVideos/videos This is a public episode.
