Elimelek and his wife, Naomi left Bethlehem, meaning "house of bread" because of a famine, and went to Moab, a place of idolatry. After the death of her husband and sons, Naomi's daughter in law, Ruth refused to go back to her gods in Moab and chose to follow Naomi to Bethlehem. The DILEMMA with legalism Legalism is a slow torture, a suffocation of the spirit. It is just enough religion to keep you, but not enough to nourish you. So you starve. For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.- Galatians 5:1 The DANGER with mysticism Let no one disqualify you, insisting on asceticism and worship of angels, going on in detail about visions, puffed up without reason by his sensuous mind,  and not holding fast to the Head, from whom the whole body, nourished and knit together through its joints and ligaments, grows with a growth that is from God.-Colossians 2:18-19Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world -Hebrews 1:1-2 The DIFFICULTY with asceticism If with Christ you died to the elemental spirits of the world, why, as if you were still alive in the world, do you submit to regulations—  “Do not handle, Do not taste, Do not touch” referring to things that all perish as they are used)—according to human precepts and teachings? These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion and asceticism and severity to the body, but they are of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh.-Colossians 2:20-23“There is only one thing that will put the collar on the neck of the animal that lives within us…and that is the indwelling of Christ.
