Have you ever been thrown off of your workout routine only to find that exercising does not feel as easy as it did once you try to start back up?? Whether it is an injury, illness, or just life in general getting in the way, most of us have times when we don't exercise for a while. And, unfortunately, when we try to get back into it, we can find that our body is wanting us to slow WAYYYYY down. So how can you progress yourself back to the strength and fitness levels you had before? Should you dive back into where you left off with your workouts and expect your body to catch up? Should you throw in the towel and decide that it's too hard to get started again so you shouldn't even try? Or is there another way to get yourself back into the swing of things that not only will help you progress your strength and fitness while you are getting started, but will help you keep coming back to your workouts long after you are feeling like your fit self again? On this week's episode of the Exercise Is Health® podcast, Julie and Charlie explore this idea of progressing yourself and your workouts after you have taken some time off. They lay out a straightforward plan that you can start implementing today to get back into your workout routine in a way that is sustainable and feels good. Elle Nagy was living in a foreign country with small children when she found herself slipping into depression. Several years later, and on the on the brink of suicide, Elle asked the Universe for a sign, which it sent in the form of a kickboxing dojo she had never noticed before. She started that day and the sheer physical exertion of kickboxing lifted her years long depression in mere weeks. And then she became hungry for life. She competed in her first Ironman at age 41 and is known today as the Fear Maven after an encounter with a voice in her head during that race.  Guest Bio Elle Nagy is the only self-leadership expert who utilizes an innovative, ground-breaking model for pioneering women around the world who want to stop fearing fear in an age where so many are expending energy around fear instead of legacy. Known as The Fear Maven, she's been selectively working with business leaders described as inclusive, humanitarian, disruptive and energetic. Her work spans 3 decades with professional qualification including BA Psychology, ILS Coaching, Pranic Psychotherapy, Yoga teaching and Personal Training bringing a truly holistic approach to embodiment of greatness potential. In addition to her love for her profession, she's relished the physical exploration of her own potential by participating in numerous cycling races, IronMan events and the illustrious SkyRun. Originally from South Africa, Elle now lives in New Zealand and as always obsesses in all things celebrating the gift of human life today, every day. Early Life was So EasyElle Nagy was a good girl growing up in South Africa. She got good grades and did all the things that made her parents proud - but not enough to make other people feel bad about themselves. Her childhood was typical and she says she was a little weird, but she always wondered if the stork dropped her off at the right house.  She was told she was too loud, too different, “too” many things. So she worked hard, got all A's in school, earned awards and achieved things, but never felt good enough. She says achievement became such a part of her operating system that it was the only thing she knew. It did set her up to do well in adult society…until it didn't.  Through her 20s she found life to be easy. She got a job, got promotions, and got a degree. She felt confident and unstoppable. Then, she got pregnant and her world changed. In Afrikaans culture, the next step is marriage, so she married her childhood sweetheart and became a mom - something she never thought she wanted to be. When her second baby was six weeks old, the family moved to Ireland.  Elle remembers her 30th birthday: it was pouring rain and she was sitting in a maroon-painted room crying. She remembers thinking she had no idea who she was. She knew she was a wife, a mom and a daughter, but she had no idea who she was on her own, which sent her spiraling down into depression. After several years of being depressed, she became suicidal.  She found it difficult to reach out for help. In her family, these things weren't spoken of. One time, she told her mother she thought something was wrong and she thought she was depressed. Her mother told her “women in our family don't get depressed.” So Elle thought, oops, sorry, and carried on.  Her family eventually moved back to South Africa and Elle didn't feel like she was coping well, with the moves, with her kids, with the deaths of several family members. She remembers sitting in the bathroom one day with a bottle of sleeping pills thinking, “this is it. I'm done.” Then she heard her kids' voices and realized that the pills might be an easy out for her, but not for her kids. So she made a doctor's appointment.  She told the doctor, “if you don't help me today, I will not see my children tonight.” She was diagnosed and put on antidepressants and sent to therapy. It sucked and she hated it. She hated the antidepressant. She didn't want to kill...

Sarah and Jacob also cover the many reasons why self-compassion can be just plain uncomfortable to practice. Valerie Tyler Proves That Age Is Really Only A Number! The Only Limitations Are The Ones You Set For Yourself

Running is Cheaper Than Therapy

Valerie Tyler is one of my former coaches. She taught me how to swim and how to overcome my fear of the deep end of the pool. A self-proclaimed tomboy, Valerie has been active all her life but she only got to into Marathons at 50 on a dare. Over the next 20 years, Valerie has run 35 marathons qualifying for the Boston Marathon four times. She also got into triathlons, also on a dare, and after she taught herself how to swim, she started with sprints, Olympics, half-marathons and finally the full ironman. Currently, Valerie focuses on coaching other athletes wanting to promote good health to the next generation. Her business partner is Coach Mo, who was a previous guest here. She also helped start the Southside CARA (Chicago Area Runners Association).     Episode Highlights: Valerie the tomboy since childhood. Her motivation to remain active and help others. Valerie becomes a marathoner on a dare and her first marathon. Some memorable marathons, the good and the bad. She becomes involved in CARA Valerie becomes a triathlon athlete, again, on a dare. Some memories and tips from her experience with triathlons. Valerie is challenging herself to go to Big Shoulders. She talks about her coaching journey. Valerie shares some final words of inspiration. Guest Bio Growing up as a tomboy competing with her older brother, Valerie was always active physically. From baseball to climbing trees, to tag races, to monkey bars, to long jumps, and on and on. Then mud biking! Then she transitioned to African dance, ballet, and jazz. In between, tennis, roller skating, skiing, and aerobic classes. Whew!!!! Always active, always competing, and always challenging herself. Fast forward, she was dared to run a marathon at the age of 50. Why did that happen? Valerie really found her groove….so for the next 20 years, she ran 35 marathons all over the world and more ½ marathons than she can count. During that period, she also was approached by Chicago Area Runners Association (CARA) to build a south side base leaving from LaRabida Hospital, so under pressure, Valerie founded that running group and built it up to 60 plus marathon members. During those 5 years of being the ‘Site Coordinator' for CARA South Side, she qualified for the Boston Marathon 4 times, and lead the 9:30 and 10-minute Pace Groups. Valerie was dared to race in Triathlons at the age of 52. Why did that happen? Over the years, she has participated in many, many Sprint, Olympic, Half Ironman, and 1 Full Ironman. She learned to swim, earned her Life Savers Certification, and began coaching swim lessons with Chicago Blue Dolphins. Her first Ironman at the age of 67 was in Chattanooga, and she placed 2nd in her age group behind a woman that had done 9 and this was her 10th competition. What a proud moment to be on the Podium and invited to Kona!!!!! However, she was one and done. Ironman training was by far the most difficult, challenging, and mentally draining experience she had ever done. She was exhausted but exhilarated enough for a lifetime. In the past few years, Valerie has retired from Corporate America and earned certifications in Yoga, Personal Training, Fitness Training, and Nutritional Training. (She primarily follows a vegetarian diet with an emphasis on protein). She founded her own company, VTFit, 7 years ago and now teaches 40 minutes of strength training on Zoom 5X a week with a base of approximately 60 students, most of whom have been with her for more than 3 years. She has received numerous first and second-place age group awards and hundreds of medals from racing events of all types. As she moves into her senior years, Valerie feels the desire to extend herself and her energies into motivating and training the next generation. She was blessed to have an amazing racing career, and she wants to see more ‘people of color' pushing the envelope and representing the US in marathons and triathlons around the world. So, she continues to train – coaching swimming and track under the guidance of her stellar coach, Mo Wills, of Infinity Multisport. This game is about ‘getting comfortable with being uncomfortable' – his favorite saying. Her favorite mantras are;  (1) Keep It Moving and stay active.  (2) If I can set an example for a healthy lifestyle, my work is done!  (3) Be bold and live life to the fullest in love, health, spirit, family, and friends!!!!  (4) You can choose to be healthy and fit…it's a choice!
