New York City's globalFEST is a landmark musical event every January, a sonic feast featuring 12 artists on three stages in a single winter night. In this program, we hear extended live tracks from Senegal's Cheikh Lo, also Meklit, Les Amazones D'Afrique and dynamic new sounds from Turkey and South Korea. Rising star in Algerian rai music Sofiane Saidi makes his U.S. debut. In a season when we are being denied live music experiences, a virtual soiree at 2020's globalFEST edition may just be the next best thing.
This week’s episode of Music Life is an absolute powerhouse of the some of the greatest talent in contemporary music right now. Led by Tiguidanké Diallo, AKA Niariu, originally from Guinée, they'll talk about why it’s easier to sing in the dark, why musicians need to be rebels, and finding your own voice in your music. Niariu is a multidisciplinary artist and singer with the band Les Amazones d'Afrique. They’re a supergroup with members coming from all over the continent, with the aim of raising awareness of violence against women. Joining her is Dyo, an Ivor Novello nominated artist of Nigerian heritage, who’s worked with everybody from Maroon 5, Chip, and Wiley, to Mr Eazi, Iggy Azalea, Adekunle Gold, and Luis Fonsi. The first “pan-African rock star”, Lady Donli, is also here; she grew up in Abuja, Nigeria, and released the Enjoy Your Life album last year, which featured the huge track Cash. And finally, Marla Brown, a dancer and performer, and the daughter of the “crown prince of reggae”, Dennis Brown.

Amongst our selections, there was #NewMusic from Beauty In Chaos + Evi Vine, Christone "KINGFISH" Ingram + Buddy Guy, Marika Hackman + Let's Eat Grandma, GRAE, Mozez + DJ Celeste Lear, Zeb Samuels, Bryony Jarman-Pinto, Joy Crookes, ANNE PACEO, Seasurfer, Nguyen Le, Nitin Sawhney + YVA + Dhruv Sangari + Nicki Wells, Ghostpoet, Airmodular + Jenifer Douros, Cleo Sol, Agnes Obel, Les Amazones d'Afrique, Zoë Modiga + Tubatsi Mpho Moloi and Family Time. Our Luvva Cover feature was special this week! One of Billie Holiday's best loved songs has been given a complete makeover by Ester Rada, one of Israel's biggest stars. As with all good cover versions, it is not an attempt to recreate the original - Ms. Rada very much puts her own jazz-inspired stamp on it. It's fascinating - give it a listen! The wettest February on record (possibly) so settle down to the warming glow of a cathode ray tube and listen to Les Amazones d'Afrique, Television, Naomi Bedford, a haunting piece of music by Latvian composer, Ēriks Ešenvalds or revel in cosy nostalgia with Fleetwood Mac, Caravan, Captain Beefheart or Rod Stewart. Let Jade, Ballaké Sissoko & Vincent Segal or Catherine Bott smooth your troubled brow. Whatever your taste in music, I'm sure that there's something here to irritate you. And that's not all.
