Crédits  Générique : Dr Alban "Sing Hallelujah" Titres écoutés dans l'émission : “Chan Chan”, “De Camino A La Vereda”, “El Cuarto De Tula”, “Pueblo Nuevo”, “Dos Gardenias”, “¿Y Tú Qué Has Hecho?”, “Veinte Años”, “El Carretero”, “Candela”, “Amor De Loca Juventud”, “Orgullecida”, “Murmullo”, “Buena Vista Social Club”, “La Bayamesa”.  Ali Farka Toure, Ry Cooder “Bonde”, Arsenio Rodriguez “Dundunbanza”. Inspired by the recent album from Vieux Farka Toure, in partnership with Khruangbin, celebrating his late father Ali Farka Toure, I'm sharing some of my favourite Malian music. A country deep in the cultural heritage of many deep and diverse natures, Mali has produced some deeply emotive music from a wide range of musicians and musical styles. I've included many different types of Malian music in this mix for your enjoyment, from the 'Desert Blues' of groups such as Tinariwen, Imarhan and Toumast, to the international [but still very Malian] sound of Salif Keita, Amadou & Miriam. There are iconic women artists such as Fatoumata Diawara and Oumou Sangare, and political commentators and campaigners, such as Anansy Cisse and Seckou Keita. Music in Mali for the last 10 years, since a coup in 2012, has been difficult, owing to the extreme nature of some aspects of the government. This has led to many musicians leaving for other countries or attempting to go underground in their own country. Maybe I will get to Mali one day, but in the meantime let the music take us there together.

The album received almost universal praise, going on to win both GRAMMY and Latin Grammy awards. Ryland Peter Cooder is an American musician, songwriter, film score composer and record producer. He is a multi-instrumentalist but is best known for his slide guitar work, his interest in roots music from the United States, and his collaborations with traditional musicians from many countries.  The virtuoso guitarist has been a musician other musicians have followed closely, and no popular musician has a broader or deeper catalogue. He has played songs so simple that they are hardly songs, and songs so complex that they would tax, if not overwhelm, the capacities of most talented guitarists.  Rolling Stone, in 2003, named him the 8th greatest guitarist on their list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time, his influence has been felt more than his records have been heard, with perhaps some exceptions: the group of elderly Cuban musicians whom he assembled and recorded in 1997 and called the Buena Vista Social Club, Also recording with Ali Farka Toure, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, and Manuel Galban, to name a few.  On July 11, 1979: The first U.S. digitally-recorded LP of (with vocals), Bop 'Til You Drop by guitarist Ry Cooder, was released by Warner Bros. The unique and primal sound of Desert Blues from the musicians of Mali and nomadic tribes of the Sahara is less an offshoot of "the blues" as closer to its original root before the music was filtered through the African slave experience, through the Delta, and permeated American culture. This music is a modern interpretation of that ancient music, lovingly crafted by African musicians since the '70s, including some highly prominent and now-famous musicians including Ali Farka Toure, who once said, "The guys in Mississippi are playing American-Malian music, not the other way around."

The Upful LIFE Podcast

Episode 019 of *The Upful LIFE Podcast* welcomes our good friend LUKE QUARANTA to the show for another long and winding discussion, the last interview I conducted over two weeks in NOLA during Jazz Fest 50. I first encountered Luke and his band TOUBAB KREWE at Bear Creek Music and Arts Festival, at Spirit of Suwannee Music Park, around 2008 or 2009. Ever since, I've been a big fan of his percussion magic, and of course the amazing Toubab Krewe, who released their latest LP Stylo in 2018. Toubab Krewe is always very active over Jazz Fest, and the members play in a lot of other bands as well, not the least of which is Luke himself. Nonetheless we were able to track him down at the end of our stay in NOLA, and he more than delivered with a fascinating interview that was at once informative and entertaining. LUKE QUARANTA Intro>Interview at 11 Mins Quaranta takes us on a lengthy journey of his inspiring career as a drummer, starting with his humble beginnings growing up in New Rochelle, NY and spending some time in the Bronx as a young adult. He discusses formative influences on him as a youth, and how he developed an interest in the different drums he employs when creating with Toubab Krewe. Originally and primarily based in Asheville, NC, Toubab Krewe members came together in organic fashion, shared a passion for West African instrumentation and it's music, and a strong curiosity to make it something new and evolved of it, yet still in tribute to the traditions. Over time, Luke began working with Djembe, Congas, Dundun, Sangban, and KenKeni drums, and he explains how he came in contact with these instruments and where he picked up knowledge and understanding of these ancient drums along the way. From there, Quaranta describes the context of these instruments, music from Mali, Guinea, and the Ivory Coast, and how he/his bandmates internalized it, and then repurposed it as their own creation, with permission and a blessing. Quaranta discusses mentors and friends from his travels in West Africa. I asked him how he was able to get together and study at length with master drummers in Africa and in the US, to such depth and understanding. He describes several trips to Africa to live with and make music among the people in Mali, Guinea and Ivory Coast. Quaranta explains how they received blessings from the master teachers to take this music to the West; they were invited to live with them and their families, spending a month a time, on more than one occasion, to get a proper orientation from the musicians who know it best. We talk a bit about Toubab Krewe in the early days, and Luke appears to have a fond time reminiscing on the start of this band and it's journey in the early 00's, he takes great detail in the narrative of how the music was instilled in them in Africa, how they hosted master drummers here in the States and traveled extensively with them and traditional dance groups too, and how it all tied together with the embryonic phase of Toubab Krewe.   Luke explains how Toubab carries echoes of African greats like Ali Farka Toure, Orchestra Baobab and Salif Keita, but are ambassadors of the music into the future, they are not bound by the same traditions, and the Krewe was encouraged to play this music from their own hearts.  From there, Quaranta explains the etymology of the name "Toubab Krewe", how it pertains to non-Africans AND is a nod to the heartbeat of jazz music, New Orleans, where our conversation was taking place. Which brings us to the discussion around current Toubab Krewe drummer Terrence Houston, who's been George Porter Jr's drummer for several years and is very admired in the local community and around the US. Quaranta explains how Houston came into the Toubab picture, and how his inclusion has informed the sound of the band in their modern era, most specifically with regard to the material found on STYLO. We finish up the conversation on Toubab with discussing their newest LP STYLO, including the writing and recording processes for both studio and live efforts past and present. After a lengthy powwow on all things Toubab, we take some time to talk about the incredible Weedie Braimah, who appeared on Episode 004 of *The Upful LIFE Podcast*, a master djembefola whom Luke has studied with, collaborated with, and befriended for many years. They both live and work in New Orleans, and the two have united for some amazing musical endeavors, not the least of which is Weedie Braimah & the Hands of Time. Quaranta takes a few minutes to flesh out the concept for this group and explain the nature of their music in a language everybody can easily understand. This is a powerful collection of world music masters and it was quite informative to hear about what goes into making the Hands of Time happen. A little bit about Jazz Fest, and the myriad of side bands that come to life in NOLA that Weedie, Luke, and collaborators include Raja Kassis (Antibalas), and Terence Higgins (Mad Skillet, Ani DiFranco). We touch on Luke's role in some of those bands, such as Pirate's Choice, Wahala Boys, FuFu All-Stars, and MEGAWATT, a project spearheaded by Kassis that include's musicians from outside of NOLA, such as Lettuce's Adam Deitch, Break Science's Borahm Lee, among others. Blake Quick/Rachel Murray (THE QUICKENING) Interview at 1hr 11mins  After Luke's chat, we pivot to a NOLA-based buzz-band I'm very fond of, The Quickening, with a sweet 22-minute interview with founder/guitarist/vocalist Blake Quick and vocalist Rachel Murray. Their 2018 LP Begin Again made Upful LIFE's Favorite 18 Albums of 2018, and we've had our eyes and ears on The Quickening for a couple years now. Enjoy a peak behind the scenes of a Crescent City band cutting their teeth in that great environment, and some perspective on the hard work and grueling efforts it takes to make or break a band in this crowded, vibrant, and often cut-throat music scene. Both Quick and Murray also shout out some of their favorite underground NOLA musicians. Vibe Junkie JAM of the Week   Garage-a-Trois debut EP, vinyl only, "Mysteryfunk". Fog City Records, 1999. I just let the whole 24mins EP ride out. 3 full songs and a minute-long outro. This features the original lineup of Stanton Moore, Charlie Hunter, and Skerik, Produced by Dan Prothero. You may think you know these guys as players, or even GAT, but you likely haven't heard them quite like this. Almost an electronic album, Moore unfurling boukou trip-hop breakbeats and drum & bass jungle riddims, underneath the kaleidoscopic eccentricities of Hunter and Skerik in full bloom.

Michael Berkeley's guest today is the sitar player and composer Anoushka Shankar, one of the stars of world music today. She studied exclusively with her father, the great Indian sitar player Ravi Shankar, made her debut at age 13 in New Delhi, and released her first solo recording in 1998. In 2001 her third album, Live at Carnegie Hall, was nominated for a Grammy award. In 2002 she appeared at the Royal Albert Hall in a tribute concert to the late George Harrison, conducting a new piece by her father which featured Eric Clapton on solo guitar. Until 2005 she was primarily a solo performer of Indian classical music, but in that year she branched out with her fourth album, Rise, a fusion of East and West employing both acoustic and electric instrumentation, on which she appeared as composer, arranger and producer. It won her another Grammy nomination. She toured extensively in the wake of the new album, forming the Anoushka Shankar Project to present her new non-classical ensemble works to a live audience, and in 2007 released another album, Breathing Under Water, in collaboration with the Indian-American producer Karsh Kale It features guest appearances by her father and her half-sister, Norah Jones. She now applies her expertise as a fine Indian classical musician to working with top-quality musicians from a range of traditions to create innovative music that appeals to a wide audience. She has just released her next album, Traveller. Her eclectic choices for Private Passions include piano pieces by Debussy and Erik Satie; the Andantino from Faure's Piano Trio, Op.120; a piece by Ali Farka Toure and Toumani Diabate, a collaboration which she particularly admires; a raga played by her father; a flamenco piece, and Nick Cave's song 'Into My Arms'.

Africa is the world's second-largest and second most-populous continent, after Asia. At about 30.2 million km² (11.7 million sq mi) including adjacent islands, it covers 6% of the Earth's total surface area and 20.4% of the total land area. Egypt has long been a cultural focus of the Arab world, while remembrance of the rhythms of sub-Saharan Africa, in particular West Africa, was transmitted through the Atlantic slave trade to modern samba, blues, jazz, reggae, hip hop, and rock. The 1950s through the 1970s saw a conglomeration of these various styles with the popularization of Afrobeat and Highlife music. Modern music of the continent includes the highly complex choral singing of southern Africa and the dance rhythms of the musical genre of soukous, dominated by the music of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Indigenous musical and dance traditions of Africa are maintained by oral traditions, and they are distinct from the music and dance styles of North Africa and Southern Africa. Arab influences are visible in North African music and dance and, in Southern Africa, Western influences are apparent due to colonisation. Psyholirik - AfriCast Tracklist : 1. Hello to all of the music listeners everywhere! HELLA GIMMIX SAY WHAT !?! So, I decided to do something a little different this time around after being inspired by a friend of mine to think about this topic: A Soundtrack to Your Life. I really liked the idea and began connecting it to certain songs or feelings in music and how they corresponded to different times or feelings in my life. For this particular episode, I just put together a bunch of tracks from different artists that I felt were "Classic" in some way. Either what they represented for music overall, or what it represented for me personally. I did the mix one time through with no preconceived mix sequence. What you get is a raw blend of some of the best music I've heard to date. Clearly, I could not capture perfectly all of the ideas and influences that make up the story of my life from a musical perspective, in just this one take. I at least have one more hour if I were to make a soundtrack for a "standard" movie and to be honest, I hope this life is more than just standard. ;) So, we'll see what comes out in a future session where I help you and I to discover the music for The Soundtracks to Our Lives. (Stevie Wonder, Jimi Hendrix, Marvin Gaye, The Say What !?! ;) Thank you for listening! Humbly yours, J HOUSE !?! ARTISTS INCLUDE: Stevie Ray Vaughn, Operation Ivy, Ali Farka Toure, Bob Marley, NOFX, UGK AND MANY MORE !?!

Album of the week: Ali and Toumani from Ali Farka Toure and Toumani Diabate on World Circuit. Welcome to your next round the world music adventure. For those of you who like your African Music with a deep and heavy funk groove and a touch of fuzz guitar you'll jump with joy at Strut's re-release of Afro-Rock Volume One - out of print since 2002 and credited with started the "craze" for record digging and retro releases from the motherland. Hear a track on this week's broadcast along with a cut from Ofege's album Try and Love and some seriously heavy rocked out fuzz guitars from Zambia in the 70's courtesy of Amanaz, who's re-release on the Shadoks label is "a hallucinogenic £32" from Honest Jons. We play a track from Amanaz today - see what you reckon. Our album of the week, in complete contrast is some of the most beautiful music I've heard so far this year, Ali and Toumani with three cuts from the album you'll hear an on the spot improvisation from Toumani, Ali with some deep Peul grooves and the extraordinary love and empathy these two musicians have for each other's music. A contender for album of the year. Starting with some Brit folk and tracks from the Imagined Village with a little known Ewan McColl composition and the marvellous Chumbawamba mocking the BNP's attempts to infiltrate the British Folk scene. Slotting a track from the new Bollywood Funk album into the mix aswell, we have another eclectic round the world music adventure. Mali's bluesman Ali Farka Touré has passed the torch onto his son Vieux Farka Touré, whose self-titled first album on World Village Music (www.worldvillagemusic.com, US release: February 13; Canada, February 6, 2007) features the final studio recordings of the older Touré before his death in March 2006. The album, which also features kora-player Toumani Diabaté, draws heavily on the same blues-inflected North African desert traditions that Ali Farka Touré made famous on such albums as the Grammy-winning Ry Cooder collaboration Talking Timbuktu (World Circuit). Vieux's debut pays musical homage to his father's roots with familiar trancey guitar-work while incorporating new musical influences from reggae to rock. He will be singing many of these songs on his debut North American tour in July and August. “Here in Africa, he who teaches you in life, you will follow his path,” explains Vieux in his austere yet grounded way. “Our lives here in Mali are like that. Much of what I sing on the album was his wisdom, teachings that he passed down to me. As he neared the end of his life, I knew that the wisdom he imparted on me was important to spread.”
