In West Africa, women are on the cutting edge of musical and cultural progress. This program looks at four singer/composers with roots in tradition and unique ideas about how to keep them current in the fast-changing milieu of today's African music. Mali's Fatoumata Diawara keeps her focus on messages, mixing traditional sounds and rock idioms to reach young audiences. Senegal's Aida Samb is finding new avenues for that country's trademark mbalax sound, including collaborations with Afrobeats stars like Wizkid. Elida Almeida of Cape Verde has emerged as a freewheeling composer, able to draw on whatever influences she likes, and it's working for fans of all generations. And Benin's Angelique Kidjo, never one to sit back on her many successes, has covered Talking Heads' 1980 album Remain in Light, in its entirety, re-Africanizing a rock classic for a new time. We'll speak with all four artists, and hear their latest music. Produced by Banning Eyre APWW #785

This program tells the story of generations of creative musicians from Benin who translate traditional, largely Vodun occult music into popular and experimental music. We hear traditional music styles including tchinkoumé, agbadja, and kakagbo, and explore how, starting in the 1970s, Sagbohan Danialou (a singer, drummer, guitarist and composer known as "l'homme orchestre," the one-man-band) and Tohon Stanislas transformed these styles into popular music. We hear from Samuel "Jomion" Gnonlonfoun, one of the founders of the experimental super-group Gangbé Brass Band, who took the traditional approach further into jazz in the 1990s and 2000s, including new music from Jomion & The Uklos, Gnonlonfoun's current band. Plus an interview from superstar Angelique Kidjo, and music from her latest album "Eve." Produced by Morgan Greenstreet in 2014 APWW #680
Today's Song of the Day is “Sunlight To My Soul featuring Soweto Gospel Choir” by Angelique Kidjo.
“A lot of people were mocking me. People would send pictures to my mum saying ‘is there something wrong with your son? We've seen him in traffic hawking watches'”. For a lot of African people, luxury goods are synonymous with international brands. They believe that high-quality products can only come from abroad. Today in the podcast, Africa Daily's Muthoni Muchiri speaks with Anthony Dzamefe of Caveman Watches who quit his job working for a hotel collecting tourists to set up his own business. He ended up learning how to fix and then make quality watches – and now counts celebrities like Beyoncé and Angelique Kidjo amongst his clientele. But at the beginning he says customers would reject his watches after they found out they were made in Ghana.

Ep 142: Cory Docorow is a highly regarded sci-fi author, activist and journalist who is in favour of the liberalisation and modernisation of copyright laws. He recently coined the concept of "enshittification", which is when monopolistic digital platforms offer increasingly worse services to continue making money... and then they die. We talk about how the music industry is enshittifying itself, and how copyright could be used better. You may find his views provocative and/or counter to your own beliefs – which of course is all the more reason to listen to them! PLUS, stay tuned until the end of the podcast for an exclusive extract from the audiobook of Cory's new book The Bezzle, read by Wil Wheaton, and which deals with music copyright theft. More on Cory: he is also a special advisor to the Electronic Frontier Foundation (eff.org), the non-profit digital rights group, and he has published a number of fiction and non-fiction books. "Enshittification" was the American Dialect Society's 2023 Word of the Year. His newest novel is The Bezzle. Bass player and songwriter Michael Olatuja has a career that spans continents and styles. He grew up in Lagos, Nigeria, spent his teenage years playing on the London jazz scene, and has spent much of his career here in New York, playing with everyone from Diana Ross to Shakira to the band for the Broadway hit Frozen. His latest album, called Lagos Pepper Soup, is a tribute to those three cities, and his cinematic Afrobeat sound contains jazz roots of Fela Kuti and Tony Allen, but also perhaps a bit of orchestration from his work with Broadway and Angelique Kidjo. Michael and his band play songs from the new album in-studio. Michael Olatuja plays at Joe's Pub on Sept. 27. Michael teaches you the recipe for pepper soup here: Set list: “Brighter Day”, “The Hero's Journey”, “Lagos Pepper Soup” Watch “The Hero's Journey”:
Gabriela Martina is a vocalist, composer, and bandleader who grew up in Switzerland. She spent 13 years living and working in the US (Boston & New York) learning from the people who made Jazz (among many other styles of music originating from the US) as important of an art form as it is today. Gabriela grew up yodeling with her family and had performances as early as the age of 4. Being raised on a beautiful farm in the heart of Switzerland surrounded by a musical family has influenced her musical path strongly. Martina's upcoming album ‘Homage to Grämlis' (delayed by Corona 2020), is a tribute to the farm in the Swiss Alps where she was raised. In spring of 2019 she won the LABgrant from The Boston Foundation, which gave her great support with her album production of ‘Homage to Grämlis'. In the fall of 2021, Martina had the great honor to receive the arts & culture award 2020 from the arts and culture commission Horw, her home town in Switzerland. She also received the DIPLÔME DE MÉDAILLE DE VERMEIL from the lauréats Arts-Sciences-Lettres, 2020, in Paris (France). During the time of the pandemic, Gabriela Martina has composed nine new compositions for her newest album called ‘STATES'. The word ‘States' refers to the United States of America, but also to a ‘state of mind', or simply a ‘state of being'. Sounds created with your voice and percussion/drumming as the first human musical elements. She has used them as the core elements for her compositions. Her works include wordplay, music with words (spoken word) and words with no meaning (gibberish). The release for this album is slated for 2024! Released in 2016 with a four-star review from DownBeat, her album, No White Shoes, represented a major step in the singer's sojourn as a 21st-century musician. Martina had the opportunity to perform and collaborate with heavyweights like Meshell Ndegeocello, Jack DeJohnette, and Angelique Kidjo. She recorded with veteran drummer J.R. Robinson and was a semi-finalist in the Shure Voice Competition at the 2009 Montreux Jazz Festival, performing with guitarist Lee Ritenour's band. Martina released a critically hailed EP in 2010, Curiosity, which included her original song “Ain't Nobody,” a finalist in the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers Foundation Young Jazz Composer Awards in 2012. Martina owns her own booking agency called Red Velvet Sounds and is cofounder and curator of the free improv concert series In Momentum. In June 2019 she took part in the Central Swiss Yodeling Festival and graduated with top marks. She has also performed in concert venues such as the Berklee Performance Center, Jordan Hall, International Tennis Hall of Fame, State House of Flags and the Scullers Jazz Club. Gabriela has a bachelor's degree from Berklee College of Music and a master's degree from the New England Conservatory of Music, where she studied with Donna McElroy, Jason Moran, Cecil McBee, Miguel Zenon, Frank Carlberg, Dominique Eade, Ken Schaphorst, Jerry Bergonzi among many others. Martina is passionate about learning more about other cultures, helping to develop a sense for community, and fighting inequality and racism. She is a strong advocate of causes that promote equal human rights independent of religious or political affiliations. From 2009 to 2010, Martina was the founder and president of the Cultural Leaders Club at Berklee College of Music, where students investigated causes and effects in terms of race, gender, and ethnicity issues. Sonic Relief, which Martina co-founded, was awarded the Berklee Urban Service Award 2016 for using music to aid people in need, such as organizing a humanitarian fundraising concert for Syrian refugees, featuring Simon Shaheen and the Lee Swensen Katz Trio in December 2015. Gabriela Martina has many hidden talents, one of them being cooking which she clearly proved through her cookbook she wrote during the desperate times of the pandemic 2020/2021 called ‘Dinner with My Neighbor'. In this episode, Gabriela shares her background, education, and musical journey.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Kel-P Zoom video!Nigerian Grammy-winning producer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Kel-P (Wizkid, Angelique Kidjo, Burna Boy, Dadju, Adekunle Gold) makes his debut as a vocalist in the romantic number “One More Night” via Virgin Records France and Jones Worldwide. The single is off his debut EP “Bully Season Vol. 1”.A powerful, mid-tempo tune with cathartic, raw intensity, “One More Night” captures the listener right away. Kel-P's slick, charismatic flows are supported by Nelly & Kelly Rowland's “Dilemma” sampled instrumental, which melds seamlessly with his powerful vocal performances. The instrumentation creates a summery soundscape for Kel-P's contagious melodies as he sings about a mysterious lady who has captured his heart overnight and he longs for another romance-filled night with his new love interest. With production driven by Kdagreat, the tune was mixed by Dro (Metro Boomin, Wizkid, Rema, Dave, Stormzy, Bnxn Fka Buju, Khalid, and 24Hrs). The colourful visual for the single was shot in Los Angeles and was directed by LA-based cinematographer Damian Belden. “One More Night” features vibrant synths, lush drum lines, and rich bass surrounding the soundscape of an atmospheric chill and relaxing melody, the single makes for a perfect love anthem. The song demonstrates the Nigerian multihyphenate's ability to make massive hooks feel calm, relaxed, and, most importantly, emotional. “How about we do this one more night,” Kel-P declares over warm synths and fluttering drums. Speaking about the single, Kel-P says, “The inspiration came from a collaborative session involving Kdagreat the producer, myself, and a beautiful lady at the time. The hook “One More Night” came from a place where this same beautiful lady who was my main muse gave me so much pizazz that I just felt I needed to spend one more night with her.The Grammy Award-winning producer and songwriter recently unveiled his debut project “Bully Season Vol.1. This is the first installment of what we expect to be an exciting series. The 5-track EP shows and highlights Kel-p's growth in the industry as a musician. Coming close to working with different people in the diaspora and adopting new sounds, staying fluent as a seasoned record producer, singer, and songwriter. Music lovers who are hungry and thirsty for classical feel-good music will fall in love with the exotic sounds of “Bully Season Vol.1”. Describing the EP, Kel-P said, “It is Daring, Colourful, and Sexy”.We want to hear from you! Ibrahim Maalouf and Angelique Kidjo are both accomplished and storied artists in their own right, but their collaborations bring a new light to their artistry. It is no more apparent than on their 2022 release Queen of Sheba, a potent, grooving and emotional musical telling of the fabled tale of an Ethiopian queen who travels to Jerusalem to speak with King Solomon. It seamlessly fuses African and Middle Eastern rhythms and melodic themes with a story told through seven riddles in one of Angelique many languages, Yoruba. Geoff Stanfield chatted with Angelique and Ibrahim for this fun and insightful interview. Enjoy. Sponsered by Sonnox https://www.sonnox.com
Ethiopian Airlines has resumed commercial flights to the capital of the war-hit Tigray region, Mekelle, for the first time in nearly two years. We hear from excited passengers in Addis Ababa, just before they boarded the flight. And five-times Grammy award winner Angelique Kidjo is our guest editor. The singer-songwriter from Benin, talks to us about her music, the causes that concern her and the people she champions.
This year, we are launching a new tradition: a year-end episode that looks forward rather than back. We'll ask artists and others to tell us about something new they discovered in African music this year, something that points to the future. The answers range from rising- star artists, to changes in the industry, to revelations about artists and styles that have been around, just not noticed. We'll hear from Angelique Kidjo, Oumou Sangare, Fally Ipupa and many of the artists we met at WOMEX 2022. Produced by Banning Eyre. APWW #866
