Founded in 1988, Rosalind’s Ethiopian Restaurant is practically a landmark. In fact, it helped inspire the formal creation of LA’s Little Ethiopia. Pre-pandemic, Rosalind’s had served as a communal hub thanks to Meklit’s personable and well-connected father. But COVID put them into a tailspin, with a daunting menu and food that didn’t easily lend itself to takeout. Meklit decided to experiment with the menu, working with her father to update both the copy on the menu and the dishes themselves. Soon, customers were lining up asking for the new specials, and John Legend and Chrissy Teigen even gave the restaurant a resounding seal of approval.

On December 1st, 2006, Rahwa and Asmeret Habte took over Hidmo on 20th & Jackson. In a very short amount of time, Hidmo became known as a community center cleverly disguised as an Eritrean restaurant in Seattle's Central District, and a mecca for Seattle hip-hop. The space Rahwa and Asmeret helped create along with their family and friends became a safe space for youth in the neighborhood, an organizing hub for a large amount of community organizations in the city, and an all-ages venue for musicians who had very few venues accessible to them. Hidmo brought together community in a way that very few venues in our city ever have, and what happened those 4 years on 20th & Jackson can still be felt throughout our community, and the world today.  Rahwa tragically passed away earlier this year, and in honor of her legacy and the legacy of what she helped build, we brought together a playlist of some of her favorite artists who have graced the hut, along with personal memories shared from the artists themselves, including Blue Scholars, THEEsatisfaction, Khingz, JusMoni, Hollis, Shabazz Palaces, Meklit, Invincible, Dakota Camacho, Beyond Reality, Siren's Echo, One Be Lo and more. 1. Gairloch Museum in the Highlands of Scotland is one of the winners of the 2020 Art Fund Museum of the Year prize. Gab & Jam Episode 43 Musical Discoveries V2.0 Description This episode is a follow-up to our first Gab & Jam episode (https://youtu.be/pqObIeyy5FA ), which nearly a year and a half ago. As we worked on the “research” for this episode, I noticed a common thread with at least half of the artists represented here and that’s they represent some sort of cultural, ethnic, or racial mixture, and for the ones that don’t meet that criteria, there is usually a musical or a genre mix happening. We will try to point out those “mixings” as we share them and their music with you. FYI: Most of the “research” came from Wikipedia (which although is NOT a reliable source, but is the first stop often when trying to understand something or someone). Recommended Tracks (from this episode): 1. Mitski, “Nobody” 2. Meklit, “You Are My Luck” 3. Stromae, “Papaoutai” 4. Cake, “Love You Madly” 5. This is a black arts and culture site. . . .  1. Kola Adesokan -- Kolamanjaro & his Yoruba Heritage Ensemble is where the classic Yoruba song-meter meets the modern. It is indeed, the crossroad at which yesterday's rhythms intersect with today's sounds to propel the future of cultural arts entertainment forward. It is a bridge that seeks to link Yoruba from the source with others far and widely dispersed around the globe and across the Diaspora. Kola Adesokan, (aka Kolaman or Kolamanjaro) describes his music as Juju-Fusion, a style which he branded Rhythm-N-Groove™ of Afrika, which is another variety of Afro-Beat genre founded by Fela Kuti of Nigeria. Kolamanjaro is a jazzily rhythmic sound whose soul is deeply rooted in authentic Yoruba heritage experience.  2. (Originally aired April, 2014) It took Meklit Hadero a while to realize she could be a singer, and a while longer to start recording, but man, has she made up the distance. Over the last few years she's released a series of impeccably produced albums showcasing her own craftily written songs as well as some pretty beguiling cover versions, moving seamlessly from jazz to soul to hip-hop, indie rock, folk and even a little country. Her supple, spirited vocals invite comparisons to Joni Mitchell, Nina Simone, Nora Jones and Joan Armatrading. But she has a sound all her own, drawing on musical influences in all the aforementioned genres as well as the Ethiopian pop she heard growing up and the North/East African music she's been exposed to in her work on The Nile Project, which she co-founded. Meklit and I surveyed her discography, including her new album We Are Alive, while talking about her life and career, her exuberant approach to performance and the way creativity takes its own good time.

We open with Gange's “African Suns.”  We then play a segment from an interview with Civil Rights Movement architect, Dave Dennis, who is just returning home from a successful 50th Anniversary Conference at Tougaloo College in Mississippi. The goal of the conference was to answer the following questions: What were the lessons learned? How do they apply to today's challenges? What is the next phrase? How will an appropriate response be developed for the next phase? While speaking to Mr. Dennis about the conference and current issues on the stove top boiling over presently like Voter's Rights and Educational Opportunity, especially for black youth as access to higher education still is not either the norm or representative of the majority of black families, Mr. Dennis the first in his family to graduate from high school. 50 years later, I meet students in my classroom who are the first to graduate from high school and college. Next steps obviously include access to college education and programs in place to address the attrition rate among black men. Ironically, the issues around voter's rights are expiring as state's reevaluate residents' rights and make certain residents ineligible or make voter registration difficult and access to the polls another hurdle in society where historic memory is a tragedy of youthful ignorance and social apathy.  Music: selections from Meklit and Quinn and Melik Hadero; the Nile Project: Salaam Nubia from Aswan and Tezete; Melame Gange's African Suns and Dancing Partner.
