Do the charts have the same relevance they once did? Annie and Nick discuss the potential reasons why there are no UK artists in the annual global top 10 for the first time since 2003. Elsewhere, Kate Bush is one of a thousand musicians behind a silent album to protest the government's proposed changes to copyright law. Should we be worried about artists having their identities stolen, or should we embrace change? We had the pleasure of interviewing Sam Tompkins over Zoom video!Highly acclaimed British singer-songwriter Sam Tompkins releases his eagerly anticipated debut album hi, my name is insecure via Republic Records. Also released today is his brand new single ‘almost killed me'.Listen to hi, my name is insecure HEREListen to ‘almost killed me' HEREhi, my name is insecure is the sum of years of hard work from Sam as he builds his dream body of work, incorporating tracks which are already fan favorites alongside exciting new material. The album, out today, also sees Sam team up with writer Pablo Bowman (Calvin Harris, James Arthur, Jonas Brothers) as well as writer and producer Danny Casio (Little Mix, Joy Crookes, Tom Grennan, Rudimental). The album includes hit tracks ‘someone else', ‘time will fly', ‘see me', ‘lose it all', ‘phones in heaven' and ‘numb'.The title of the album, hi, my name is insecure, speaks to Sam's more introverted side as he explains, “I really like being in the company of my friends, but if you take me out of my comfort zone, and have me hang out at a party or an event or whatever, I just go inside myself and I find any excuse to get out of it.”The newly released single, ‘almost killed me', delves into the turbulent and confused emotions of a break-up, with Sam's raspy tones and pop-rock guitar riff bringing energy and grit to the tune. Produced by Matthew Koma (PINK/Britney Spears) and co-written by Caroline Pennell (Demi Lovato, Ava Max, Zara Larrson), speaking on the single Sam says: "Almost Killed Me is all about those times when you've finally got out of a difficult relationship and you can see it for what it truly was. whether bad, toxic or just not meant to be. Sometimes it's the hope that kills you and that is what it's about. You really think you can make it work sometimes, but when it's over and you have time to sit with it, you can finally see the bigger picture. I love this song and am so excited for it to be heard!"If there's one thing Sam wants his fans to take away from his live show, or from his music, it's that a problem shared is a problem halved. Sam shares that “Whenever I talk about my problems in my songs, I feel like a weight has been lifted, because I know that I don't have to hide or be ashamed of that thing, and I want everyone else to feel that like there's nothing in this world that you might feel sad about that is shameful. In terms of mental health, there isn't anything you ought to shy away from, you should always let people know if you're struggling.”Since starting his musical journey at 16 years old busking on the streets of Brighton, Sam has gone on to sell out shows around the world and amass a dedicated and enraptured fanbase, cementing his reputation as one of the fastest-rising British male artists. He was hailed by the likes of GQ as “one of the UK's most exciting vocal talents of the moment”, CLASH's “the man of the moment” and last year was nominated for Rolling Stone's Rising Star Award. He's cultivated an incredible online community for millions to share their love of music and has received praise from high-profile artists including Drake, Fred again.., Justin Bieber, RAYE, Sam Smith and more. The future looks bright for Sam Tompkins as he looks ahead to supporting singer/songwriter Myles Smith on his North American tour throughout September and October, which sees Sam perform at sold-out shows across Seattle, Vancouver, Portland, Sacramento, San Francisco, West Hollywood, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Denver, Saint Louis, and Kansas City. Tickets are on sale HERE. Not only this, but later this year Sam will also be heading out on his biggest EU and UK headline tour. The tour will see Sam perform across the UK and Europe throughout November and December. He will take to the stage in Manchester, Glasgow, Leeds, Bristol, Birmingham, Brighton, Bournemouth, Madrid, Barcelona, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo, Prague, Hamburg, Warsaw, Munich and Amsterdam. Tickets are on sale HEREChampioning authenticity without taking himself too seriously, and using his ever-growing platform to encourage others to do the same, Sam is an artist apart. We want to hear from you!

With so much genre hopping in her own record, I was curious to find out the songs that reflect her self, from others. And she delivered. We discuss our expectations and reactions, similarities between this album and a certain other soul singer from London and get deep into our favourite tracks from the album. There's lovely point of pod-synergy when Nolan predicts with 100% accuracy Joey's favourite track and more impressively, the reason for this selection. In the chat we reference 3  interviews that are worth looking into to get a rounder flavour of Joy. Social Media | Artist Case Studies - Jaguar Jonze, Karencici, Joy Crookes We can talk all we want about social media, but what better way to put it in context than with some case studies deep diving into some artists we love? With Instagram as our medium of choice, we've chosen three artists who we  believe embody all the foundations for a healthy and creative social media persona as per talked about in our last episode: Taiwanese-Australian singer-songwriter Jaguar Jonze, Asian-American singer-songwriter Karencici, and British artist Joy Crookes (of Irish/Indian heritage). We believe that the most important thing is to use social media to empower yourself, and what you hope to express to your listeners. These artists have taken the basic social media format Instagram has provided them with, and merged it with their own creative direction and workstyles to create content that is uniquely and consistently them, creating interesting ways of creating content through the platform in the process. If you're a visual person, don't forget to check out the YouTube verson of this podcast ep we put up with screengrab walkthroughs of the various Instagram posts for full effect! Here are the main takeaways we got from each of the artists' profiles: Jaguar Jonze Great use of colour profiling and textures: Jaguar Jonze loves her bold reds, yellows and orange hues. These are displayed prominently across her feed. She also loves leopard prints (hence the stage name) and even when she's posting day-to-day content, she's often seen sporting leopard prints too!  Awesome reusing of content: Content is precious, and Instagram (as well as most social media) is a primarily visual platform which requires quick and consistent releasing of content to stay relevant. Jaguar is adept at making sure she has lots of visual documentation of all her exploits, from photoshoots to live photos, and uses them frequently to share new information with fans or to engage with them. This is a great mindset to have. Using her own ways to create intimate spaces visually on IG: Jaguar is passionate about voicing her support for women. Last year, she campaigned against sexual harassment and assault by posting resources and events she had personally encountered or heard of on her social media on colourful, bold sticky notes written in her own hand.    Karencici Social Media Native: One look at Karencici's page will show you that she is a millennial social media native through and through. There is just something so organic and natural about the way that she shares content, while building on her brand as an artist and musician. Original use of filters to easily create new content: In instances where Karencici has done challenges or shared demos on her page, she often uses filters to spice up her off-the-cuff videos so that it tells a bigger story both musically and visually than just another video of someone singing into their microphone.  Authentic, consistent, unique engagement methods with fans: As mentioned above, Karencici is the queen of coming up with new and fun ways to engage with her fans using her own voice. From the abovementioned Christmas song challenge to a recent challenge where she recorded a video of her writing a song in under an hour and then releasing the demo on her Instagram, Karen is generous with her talents and songwriting ability, and this allows audiences to be able to take a peep into her world and her prowess as a singer-songwriter without even having to release a single.   Joy Crookes Authentic social media persona: Given her name, it's no surprise that Joy's sweet, passionate and authentic persona shines Hosted on Acast.
