In this episode, Taraleigh and Dr. Leah talk with guitarist Walter Strauss about how he rides the edge in making music and life in general. Listeners get a music lesson as he breaks down concepts of groove, melody, rhythm, and harmony for all to understand with guitar accompaniment for experiential learning. The three discuss spontaneity and generosity in improv and live music and what it's like for everyone to be riding that edge together. Walter talks about his upcoming solo album For Melody Wherever She May Find Me and his musical collaborations all over the world. For the “Did you Know,” Dr. Leah shares how live music can relate to attachment theory and Taraleigh encourages listeners to be inspired by their favorite musicians to repair relational breaks in the “Daily Jam.” Walter Strauss is an innovative guitarist known for his richly textured and syncopated playing, as well as his international collaborations. A composer and songwriter in diverse genres, he also translates music from other instruments to the guitar, resulting in mind-bending guitar renditions of the music of the West African kora that legendary kora player Toumani Diabate calls “inspirational,” as well as music of other far-flung instruments of the world. Walter's current solo release (out April 20) “For Melody, Wherever She May Find Me” is a guitar exploration of beautiful global song melodies and originals - from a Malian balafon melody to a Stevie Wonder song and a Shetland fiddle tune. He continues his collaborations - Mamajowali, with Wassoulou hunter's harp player Mamadou Sidibe and American multi-instrumentalist Joe Craven, Fula Brothers with Mamadou Sidibe, and FulaMuse, the combined band of Fula Brothers and west coast songbirds MaMuse. Walter has composed music for film, including the Ken Burns / Artemis Joukowsky documentary “Defying the Nazis”, and the “Re-evolution: The Cuban Dream” series on PBS. He has also produced and engineered records for artists like MaMuse and former Waybacks frontman Stevie Coyle. Walter's Bay Area CD release show is coming up at Freight and Salvage in Berkeley on April 20.This podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Ep #124 with Derek Gripper, guitarist and composer. Derek Gripper, who is from Capetown, South Africa, discovered the music of Toumani Diabate, a kora player from Mali and it changed his life. He decided to transcribe the music by this African Griot for the classical guitar. Toumani is an true innovator on the kora and developed a style where he plays 3 parts at once - bass lines, accompaniment and melody simultaneously. He adapted this multi-layered fingerstyle of Tomani's kora playing and has been touring and teaching classes online to students from all over the world. Since the publication of her first novel while she was still in her twenties, Nadifa Mohamed has been a writer to watch. Her second novel, The Orchard of Lost Souls, won her the Somerset Maugham Award and gave her a place on the prestigious Granta List of Best Young Novelists. She’s about to publish her third novel, and is also turning it into an opera – a commission from the Royal Opera House. What’s striking in all her work is the epic sweep of her storytelling, which explores themes of exile and survival: her characters are caught up by war and love. Nadifa herself left Somali-land in northern Somalia when civil war broke out and she was only four when she came to Britain in 1985. She talks to Michael Berkeley about her dramatic family history, and about her father, who was a travelling troubadour in Sudan. She pays tribute too to the Somali musician Hudeidi, who died of Covid this last April. He was her teacher on the oud for seven years, and her mentor, and she spent many evenings jamming with him in his west London flat. Her musical choices range from Pergolesi, Purcell and Vaughan Williams to Max Richter, Toumani Diabate and Louis Armstrong. Produced by Elizabeth Burke A Loftus Media production for BBC Radio 3

Michael Berkeley's guest today is the sitar player and composer Anoushka Shankar, one of the stars of world music today. She studied exclusively with her father, the great Indian sitar player Ravi Shankar, made her debut at age 13 in New Delhi, and released her first solo recording in 1998. In 2001 her third album, Live at Carnegie Hall, was nominated for a Grammy award. In 2002 she appeared at the Royal Albert Hall in a tribute concert to the late George Harrison, conducting a new piece by her father which featured Eric Clapton on solo guitar. Until 2005 she was primarily a solo performer of Indian classical music, but in that year she branched out with her fourth album, Rise, a fusion of East and West employing both acoustic and electric instrumentation, on which she appeared as composer, arranger and producer. It won her another Grammy nomination. She toured extensively in the wake of the new album, forming the Anoushka Shankar Project to present her new non-classical ensemble works to a live audience, and in 2007 released another album, Breathing Under Water, in collaboration with the Indian-American producer Karsh Kale It features guest appearances by her father and her half-sister, Norah Jones. She now applies her expertise as a fine Indian classical musician to working with top-quality musicians from a range of traditions to create innovative music that appeals to a wide audience. She has just released her next album, Traveller. Her eclectic choices for Private Passions include piano pieces by Debussy and Erik Satie; the Andantino from Faure's Piano Trio, Op.120; a piece by Ali Farka Toure and Toumani Diabate, a collaboration which she particularly admires; a raga played by her father; a flamenco piece, and Nick Cave's song 'Into My Arms'.

Joe Boyd tells stories from the 60s and Robyn Hitchcock plays the appropriate songs. Joe Boyd, record producer (Nick Drake, REM, Pink Floyd, Toumani Diabate among many) and author of "White Bicycles: Music In the 1960s" joins with singer Robyn Hitchcock (subject of Jonathan Demme's film "Storefront Hitchcock") for a 15 minute slice of the acclaimed show they have performed across the US and the UK. Joe tells stories from the 1960s and Robyn (who bought so many of the records Joe produced in the 1960s that "he is my Frankenstein and I am his monster") sings the appropriate songs. 5x15 brings together five outstanding individuals to tell of their lives, passions and inspirations. There are only two rules - no scripts and only 15 minutes each. Album of the week: Ali and Toumani from Ali Farka Toure and Toumani Diabate on World Circuit. Welcome to your next round the world music adventure. For those of you who like your African Music with a deep and heavy funk groove and a touch of fuzz guitar you'll jump with joy at Strut's re-release of Afro-Rock Volume One - out of print since 2002 and credited with started the "craze" for record digging and retro releases from the motherland. Hear a track on this week's broadcast along with a cut from Ofege's album Try and Love and some seriously heavy rocked out fuzz guitars from Zambia in the 70's courtesy of Amanaz, who's re-release on the Shadoks label is "a hallucinogenic £32" from Honest Jons. We play a track from Amanaz today - see what you reckon. Our album of the week, in complete contrast is some of the most beautiful music I've heard so far this year, Ali and Toumani with three cuts from the album you'll hear an on the spot improvisation from Toumani, Ali with some deep Peul grooves and the extraordinary love and empathy these two musicians have for each other's music. A contender for album of the year. Starting with some Brit folk and tracks from the Imagined Village with a little known Ewan McColl composition and the marvellous Chumbawamba mocking the BNP's attempts to infiltrate the British Folk scene. Slotting a track from the new Bollywood Funk album into the mix aswell, we have another eclectic round the world music adventure.
