On this week's Sound of Hockey, John, Andy, and Darren welcome 14-year NHL veteran and former coach of the Seattle Thunderbirds, Steve Konowalchuk. Steve has some fantastic stories to share, from prank wars to developing elite players, and he manages to battle off wild birds and geckos while recording the interview. This is a fun one that you definitely won't want to miss. Also on this episode, Darren's brother - a frequent listener of the show - makes a brief surprise cameo to be wished a Happy 40th Birthday, John gives a quick NHL Seattle update, and Andy shares the latest on what the NHL brass is considering for returning to play. On the latest Sound of Hockey, John, Andy, and Darren welcome their first guest calling in from another continent, as new San Jose Shark, Alexander True, joins the pod from Denmark. With True, the guys discuss the many differences between growing up in the relatively small hockey nation of Denmark, and how that journey to the NHL diverges from the paths taken by North Americans. Lots of fun in this interview. Also on this week's episode, Andy insists on "clarifying" the outcome of last week's Let's Get Quizzical, Darren leads a Goalie Gear Corner, and John makes a crossword puzzle... Oh, and the guys answer some questions from their first ever mailbag. SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! REVIEW!

FULL DISCLOSURE - Sound of Hockey recorded this episode on Monday night, before the extra crazy and scary coronavirus news started hitting about leagues canceling, travel being banned, etc., so please take that into account when listening. That said, this is a good opportunity to mostly escape from the COVID19 talk, though it has to at least be briefly discussed. On Episode 77, John, Andy, and Darren welcome Mike Snee, Executive Director of College Hockey Inc., to learn about his organization and talk all things college hockey. With Mike, the guys discuss such topics as what College Hockey Inc. does, the feasibility of adding additional Division I NCAA programs, and the famed Minnesota Moose SPAMboni. Segments this week include (but are not limited to) Goalie Gear Corner, You Don't See That Every Day, Let's Get Quizzical, and Weekly One-Timers. SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! REVIEW!
It's been a weird week in Seattle, so the Sound of Hockey guys are here to hopefully brighten your day a bit with some mindless hockey talk (and yes, they do briefly discuss the coronavirus and the impact it's having on the local area, as well as the hockey world). In this episode, there's a decent amount of NHL Seattle chatter, as ground has officially been broken on the practice facility, and a new partnership has been formed between Sound Transit and the team. There was also some news about there... not... being... news about ticket prices. Aside from those things, John, Andy, and Darren take a look at some of the more impressive NHL performances from the month of February, give lots of shoutouts to loyal listeners, and re-think the re-thinking of the Weekly One-Timers sound effect. Segments this week include You Don't See That Every Day, Get Off My Lawn, and Let's Get Quizzical. SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! REVIEW! WASH YOUR HANDS!
This week's episode sees a big Contiki catch up from Hartley as preparations build in Australia for the tri-series for Crossy. A slight change in format means these two challenge each other with quiz questions based on their respective careers.
It's Episode 69... And that's all we have to say about that. Aside from a harrowing tale of attempted skiing from Darren, there's lots of hockey stuff to discuss this week, as John Hynes has replaced Peter Laviolette as coach of the Nashville Predators. Also, plenty of discussion of the brewing hatred between Zack Kassian and Matthew Tkachuk, Pekka Rinne scored a goal, and the Devils decided that Ray Shero's time was done. Oh, and also, updates to the NHL All-Star Game, some local Seattle tidbits, and a WHL update. Segments this week include You Don't See That Every Day, Weekly One-Timers, and Let's Get Quizzical. SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! REVIEW!
On the latest Sound of Hockey, the guys start with a solid breakdown of the Mark Borowiecki "Borocop" incident, in which the Senators' defenseman stopped a robbery from happening during an Ottawa road trip to Vancouver. Lots of chuckles to be had there. Next, we get a WHL update from Andy about some of the huge trades that happened locally last week, as well as a discussion with John and Darren about training camps opening for the World Junior Championship, starting December 26th. Finally, perhaps the biggest Seattle news to date gets announced on this podcast, which is that Seattle Crapweasels shirts are finally available for purchase! Those can be found here. Segments this week include Let's Get Quizzical, Weekly One-Timers, and Games on the Radar. SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! REVIEW!
It's a big episode this week, as John and Andy chat with current Seattle Thunderbirds VP of Hockey Operations, and just generally legendary hockey man, Russ Farwell. With Russ, the guys take a winding journey through his hockey life in the Pacific Northwest and the WHL. Along the way, they make various interesting stops at some of the political turning points associated with running a sports team in the Seattle market. It's an interesting conversation with an interesting man. Also in this episode, John, Andy, and Darren take on the rather uncomfortable Bill Peters controversy and how it pertains to NHL Seattle. Plus, segments including Buy, Sell, or Hold, Weekly One-Timers, and Let's Get Quizzical. Oh, and plenty of discussion about a dog going to the bathroom on the ice (thanks to 1090 KJR and Thom Beuning for the audio), in an all-time WHL moment featuring Sound of Hockey's own Andy Eide. SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! REVIEW!
Episode 60 of Sound of Hockey starts with a slightly more serious tone than others, as John, Andy, and Darren get into a pretty deep conversation about this week's firing of Don Cherry by Sportsnet. After Cherry - a long-time icon in Canadian hockey lore - went on a rant about immigrants to Canada not wearing poppies for Remembrance Day, he was finally shown the door by his employer following years of generally questionable statements and antics. Also in this episode, another somewhat intense chat about a controversial subject, as Hillary Knight had been quoted as calling the NWHL a "glorified beer league." John debunks her argument. But, if you're somebody who likes the hijinks of Sound of Hockey, don't worry, because there's plenty of that as well, with a variety of segments from Let's Get Quizzical to Goalie Gear Corner to Weekly One-Timers. SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! REVIEW!
HUMONGOUS EPISODE ALERT! This week, the guys have the pleasure of speaking with none other than Ray Ferraro, superstar analyst for TSN and NBCSN, and also an 18-year NHL veteran. With Ray, the guys dive pretty deep into his takes on what to watch out for when Seattle's franchise gets up and running. Plus, plenty of discussion about his career as a broadcaster and some of his best moments behind the mic. The interview with Ray is very much worth the price of admission. Also in this episode, lots of fun banter between John, Andy, and Darren about such topics as youthful skill, NHL Seattle news (that isn't really news this time), and David Pastrnak getting into a minor car accident, then posing for a picture with the other driver. Segments this week include Goalie Gear Corner, Bad Boys, Let's Get Quizzical, and Weekly One-Timers. It's a fun episode! SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! REVIEW!
DISCLAIMER: We had some weird crackling in the audio on this one, which we didn't realize while recording. We hope to have that fixed for next week. SORRY! It's cold in Seattle right now, but the guys at Sound of Hockey have you covered, because they give some of the hottest takes around regarding the early season returns of several teams and players around the NHL. Oh, it gets spicy! Also in this episode, John, Andy, and Darren take an in-depth and scientific look at a couple of not-so-scientific fan polls, before jumping into some regular segments. Segments this week include Goalie Gear Corner, You Don't See That Every Day, Weekly One-Timers, and the triumphant return of "Let's Get Quizzical." SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! REVIEW!
On the latest Sound of Hockey episode, John goes back to the "quiz show" well and challenges Andy and Darren with a much harder quiz than last time. Fortunately Darren is ready with the perfect name for this apparent new segment. And since they're already in the mood for new segments, the guys decide to unveil yet another new addition to the show with "Bad Boys." Also in this episode, some classic segments (it's a segment-heavy episode) like Goalie Gear Corner, Weekly One-Timers, and You Don't See That Every Day. And don't worry, there's also Seattle updates and a fair dose of #Minnutiae. SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! REVIEW!
