Dilruk Jayasinha is one of Australia's most in-demand comedians. His new stand up show is called Heart Stopper, named as such because in Hindi, Dil means heart and Ruk means stop. But the show's title has since become especially apt because last year, at the age of just 37, one of the critical arteries in Dilruk's heart gave out and he suffered a heart attack. As he says himself, spoiler alert, Dilruk has survived. In this chat with Jamila Rizvi, Dilruk explains how he made the switch from working as an accountant at a big four to becoming a stand up comedian.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Awggh Dilruk, what a beautiful man.In today's ep Breeza and Maso banter with comedian Dilruk Jayasinha. At the time of recording, it was Dilruk's 6th-year soberversary!! Dilruk is adored by audiences far and wide with his comedy acts, he was once also adored because of his drinking ability. Dil opens up about why he drank and why he gave booze the flick. From an Accountant (yes, Dil was an accountant!) who could really tie one on, to a sober comedian and TV star - Dil is an absolute inspiration; and it goes without saying, an absolute crack up, he had the girls in stitches during the poddy. As the girls learned Dil is a deep thinker and he has so much personal growth wisdom to share.Buckle up for this ep folks, it's an absolute cracker. There's a lot more than meets the eye to Australian Sri Lankan Logie Award winning, ABC Utopia actor, "I'm a Celebrity get me out of here" contestant and renowned comedian Dilruk. When getting fired from accounting firm KPMG at the beginning of his career launched him into the world of comedy, Dil had no idea how high his backpacker gigs would take him. At 125kg in 2018, he took control of his life and health and went on to lose 40kg, the journey teaching him so much about loving himself at both sizes and the importance of male self love. Years of therapy and unprecedented success has brought Dilruk to where he is now, and it was such a pleasure to talk to him about it. It's our longest episode yet because it was hard to edit out all his brilliant golden nuggets so strap in for a good one.Follow Dilruk on Instagram: @dilrukjFollow us on Instagram: @unculturedpodThe gratitude journal Kripa recommended: https://shop-us.kurzgesagt.org/products/gratitude-journal

The literal translation of ‘Jayasinha’ is ‘Victorious Lion’. It’s a name befitting of a king. It’s a name with swagger. But is it suitable for Dilruk? Dil’s had a victorious few years. He’s performed sell-out shows around the country and the world and filmed a stand-up special for Amazon Prime. He’s been on TV shows like Have You Been Paying Attention? and Utopia. But he still doesn’t feel like the triumphant king of the animal kingdom his name suggests. It’s time for Dilruk to work out if he is a Victorious Lion by nature or by name only. You know Dilruk from a bunch of things. This man left his family in Sri Lanka to pursue a career in accounting in Australia. He randomly attended an Open Mic Night in 2010 and the rest is history - his passion as a stand up comedian was ignited and he did the hard yards to well and truly establish himself as one of Australia's most loved comedians. He won the Most Popular New Talent at the 2018 Logies. He's in demand locally and internationally, has released solo specials for ABC and most recently Amazon Prime, acted in Utopia and is a regular on Network Ten's Have You Been Paying Attention? and Hughesy We Have a Problem and has been on I'm a Celeb Get Me Out of Here. He also hosts a Podcast with Ben Lomas called Fitbet and has also appeared at the Sydney Opera House and in Montreal as part of the Just for Laughs festival, performed shows at the Melbourne Comedy Festival and tours the world regularly. Well not right now. But he has.. and will again!Dilruk has been described as a “buoyant, joyful comedian" and this is undeniably true but he's also profoundly honest, raw and authentic about his struggles and what he's been through. We share stories of our cultural identities and the effects they have had on us, his demons with addiction, namely food, giving up booze, and how he is managing his mental health during the pandemic.
In Dilruk's Mad Stacks, Dil and Ed are trying to earn Mad Stacks. They wander through various financial topics, financial confessions and how you can become a Mad Stacker. This episode features an update on the Cayman Islands Caper, Dilruk's non-driving history and a new website to help you save small amounts of money that could lead to your first Mad Stack. In this episode, Dilruk Cooray joins me on the couch. Dilruk explains how important community and faith is to him. He states that without his faith, he wouldn't know what to do with himself. The importance of speaking up and seeking external help when needed, is also mentioned. Viewers, I would highly recommend watching this interview. Dilruk is a fascinating man, with a wealth of knowledge, gained through personal experience of struggle. Discretion warning --> Suicide was also brought up in the interview. Always remember one thing. It ain't weak to speak.
TV Week Logie Winner Dilruk Jayasinha has never seen Apocalypse Now... until Now!Dilruk sits down with Pete for an epic chat about Francis Ford Coppola’s 1977 classic, going to movies in Sri Lanka and how his life may have imitated some of his favourite films.
