Oh yes! Let's dive into the world of C.S. Lewis and The Chronicles of Narnia. We try not to get too nerdy, but let's be real, we can't help ourselves. We discuss the themes, characters, and overall awesomeness of this classic series, and offer some insights on how it can deepen our understanding of faith and spirituality, including the parallels between Aslan and Jesus. So join us as we journey through the magical world of Narnia and explore the deeper truths that it reveals. We are discussing at-length the Chronicles of Narnia which can be read in two orders: Chronological: 1.) The Magician's Nephew2.) The Lion, the Witch, and The Wardrobe3.) The Horse and His Boy 4.) Prince Caspian5.) The Voyage of the Dawn Treader 6.) The Silver Chair 7.) The Last Battle Order of Publication:1.) The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe 2.) Prince Caspian3.) The Voyage of the Dawn Treader 4.) The Silver Chair 5.) The Horse and His Boy6.) The Magician's Nephew 7.) The Last Battle A young fan in 1957 had a dispute with his mother saying he wanted to read them chronologically and his mother preferred publication order. This fan wrote to Lewis who sent this reply:“I think I agree with your order for reading the books more than with your mother's. The series was not planned beforehand as she thinks. When I wrote The Lion I did not know I was going to write any more. Then I wrote P. Caspian as a sequel and still didn't think there would be any more, and when I had done The Voyage I felt quite sure it would be the last. But I found as I was wrong. So perhaps it does not matter very much in which order anyone read them.”But it's worth noting that order of publication will introduce you to Aslan first as the Pevensie children met him: a mystery, a wonder yet a kind and good ruler who is capable of reversing death. If you read Magician's Nephew first, you miss this experience. Also referenced in this episode: Mere Christianity The Space Trilogy (Including That Hideous Strength)Planet Narnia by Michael Ward For our many friends in Brazil, here's a link to the books in Portuguese. For more information on this podcast, visit fellowshipknox.org/podcastsYou can also e-mail questions or topic ideas to offstage@fellowshipknox.org

In this episode, we discuss Pope Francis' Easter Vigil homily about the hope that comes from remembering Jesus, our first love. We reflect on his meditations about how the women in scripture are grieved to find Jesus' empty tomb, and like these women, we all too often become hopeless and see joy as belonging to the past. We discuss moments of personal encounter with the love of Jesus that has healed us and offer an invitation to a renewed hope in Jesus by remembering the great joy and power that comes through relationship with Him. Let us allow our ‘sealed tombs' to be opened and restored by hope this Easter season.    Heather's One Thing - The young leaders at Franciscan University Sister Miriam's One Thing - Savory ham and cheese scones  Michelle's One Thing - Let Beauty Speak: The Art of Being Human in a Culture of Noise by Jimmy Mitchell (or on Amazon here) Michelle's Other One Thing - The TOR Sisters - Sr. Rita Claire and Sr. Brigid as well as the CSU at Florida State University    Resources Mentioned in this Episode:  Adam Young Podcast  - What to do with Your Sorrow and Grief p.1  The Magician's Nephew by C.S. Northern Irish artist Ross Wilson MBE talks about his remarkable sculpture The Searcher, which is based on the character of Digory Kirke who, in ‘The Magician's Nephew,' creates a wardrobe made from a magical apple tree. Modelled on CS Lewis as he was in 1919, the sculpture seeks, in the words of the artist, to capture the “great ideas of sacrifice, redemption, victory and freedom for the sons of Adam and the daughters of Eve” that lie at the heart of the ‘Chronicles of Narnia'. This talk was originally given at a CS Lewis symposium called Now We Have Faces On 3rd November, which was hosted by The CS Lewis Group at Ulster University in coordination with English at Ulster.   For more talks from Now We Have Faces: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCjaoVaQAdjdVFIFenlZVg-g   + Subscribe to The CS Lewis podcast: https://pod.link/1560959545 + For more shows, free ebook and newsletter visit our new website + For our Premier Unbelievable? Book four of Paradise Lost is STUNNING in its profundity and psychological insight, not to mention the sheer beauty of Milton's poetic imagination. For any familiar with C. S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia, the literary influence is crystal clear, as Satan approaches the walled garden, the paradiso, of Eden, and climbs the wall, disdaining the gate, as does Jadis in The Magician's Nephew. We should pay particular attention to Milton's psychological portrait of Satan, the deliberate choice of evil, the acknowledgment of good and the desire to spoil it, the regret and pain in knowing himself a parasite on all the goodness and blessedness of creation, the arrogance and pain in knowing himself a diminished being as he confronts those "lesser" angels who are now his betters, as he chose his own will over that of his Creator. As Lewis says in The Great Divorce, "there are only two kinds of people in the end: those who say to God, 'Thy will be done,' and those to whom God says, ... 'thy will be done.' All that are in hell choose it. Without that self-choice there could be no hell." Satan here acknowledges this when he says, "Evil, be now my good," and that in fleeing hell, he carried it with him, and all its attendant misery, as he is himself hell incarnate, the choice to exalt self over God. No Compromise is a new feature designed to make the themes and ideas of The Christian Atheist more accessible through conversation. As usual, Jenny's instincts are dead on - my dry didacticism requires a more popular appeal. It is our prayer that you find our discussions on No Compromise enlightening, entertaining and, more importantly, valuable in your walk with our Great God!   In this episode Jenny and I complete our discussion of C. Diving right into the most classic of children's literature, we cover all of The Magician's Nephew this week. This first book of the series follows the birth of Narnia, and while Charles is drowning in nostalgia, Asia is not here for it. This book sets the stage, and admittedly does feel like a prequel to some of the more adventurous stories that will be coming down the line. We discuss the fame of the series and some of its subsequent controversies. Naturally we also have a hefty segment railing against men and boys being stupid. That is to be expected at this point on Throwback Paperback. Next week we will be reading a new book in one week, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, book 2 of The Chronicles of Narnia. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/throwback-paperback/support

Allie and Clarence are pushed to the point of assassinations in order to protect humanity. We argue that they are justified, but do you agree with us? After a couple of dead-end plot points, all characters converge and most Afterlights are freed. All of our characters get fitting endings, and we discuss if we would recommend this book to others. Ruach Breath of Life

Time and again the Lord's sweet presence steals over us, often when we are expecting it the least, or are in greatest need of it. He comes quite unexpectedly, sometimes when we know ourselves to be in great need of receiving a fresh touch from Him. As the melody of this piece passes from one instrument to another, and the strings play a joyful pizzicato, may it release fresh joy into our own hearts. Musicians: Nicola Gerrard, Francis Cummings, Philippa Barton, Christiane Mueller, Jo Garcia How kind the Lord is –and how well He knows what people used to call ‘our mortal frame.' Life can sometimes bring us so many unexpected challenges and tumbles, with a result that we can end up as it were holding our breath and feeling afraid to laugh in case tomorrow's trials prove still more sever. But the Lord's grace is always fresh, and it is good to laugh and not fear sheer joy and pleasure. “Laugh and fear not, creatures,” Aslan urges the newly created talking animals of Narnia. “Now that you are no longer dumb and witless, you need not always be grave. For jokes as well as justice come in with speech!” (CS Lewis, The Magician's Nephew, Chapter 10, The First Joke and Other Matters.) I have dedicated this piece to ‘Gioja,' an unusual spelling of the Italian word for joy. Despite all that is serious and can even be grievous in life, the joy of the Lord remains our strength.

In every piece of literature you read, you determine the meaning based on what the author said. Whether it is fiction like Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare, The Fellowship of the Ring by Tolkien, or The Magician's Nephew by CS Lewis. Perhaps, you pick up a science, math, or English textbook. Maybe you take dieting, exercising, or cooking books off of the shelf. In all of these books, you go to them with one fundamental question, “What does the author say and what do they mean?” We read books, not looking for hidden meaning or disputing what is said, but to see what the author said. If you picked up a book on exercise and said, “No, this is really about Aristotle or Plato's views on human ethics.” you would be looked at like a mad man because that is not what the author meant. When you read a human book, you must submit to the authority of the author and not put your meaning where he put meaning. The author of his or her book is the authority of that book, therefore, you interpret their book by what they say. Why do we interpret Scripture differently? If we give authority in that way to human authors, why would we not submit to an even greater authority - God. He is the authority of Scripture. Not you. Not me. That means, when we come to a passage of Scripture we must as “what does God say?” and “what does God mean by what He said?”
