Vangst Partners with the Cannabis Business Office to Launch a Technical Assistance ProgramIn this episode, Karson Humiston announces a breaking partnership between Vangst and the Cannabis Business Office to launch a new program. Karson is joined by Emma Howard, the program manager of the Cannabis Business Office, and Tristan Watkins, the Deputy Director for the Business Support Division.Emma provides an overview of the Cannabis Business Office, which was established in 2021 to provide access to capital and technical assistance programming for social equity cannabis businesses. The office offers grants, loans, and technical assistance programs to support business development in the cannabis industry.Karson and Tristan discuss the need for more specialized technical assistance for cannabis businesses. They highlight the gap in the market for expert-led courses on topics such as accounting, HR, compliance, cultivation, and more. The partnership between Vangst and the Cannabis Business Office aims to fill this gap by creating a program of 50 courses that provide real tactical business help and guidance.Emma explains the process for accessing the resources provided by the Cannabis Business Office. Clients need to contact the office with their social equity license or finding a suitability letter from the Marijuana Enforcement Division (MED) to access the program.Tristan shares details about the loan program offered by the Cannabis Business Office. The program takes a unique approach by working with a lending group that specializes in character-based lending, focusing on the business's ability to repay rather than traditional metrics like credit and collateral. This approach reduces the risk for borrowers and allows for more flexible repayment structures. The conversation then shifts to the potential impact of rescheduling cannabis at the federal level. Emma and Tristan discuss the benefits, such as lessening the tax burden and opening up banking options, but also highlight the potential risks of larger businesses taking advantage and pushing out smaller businesses. In the final segment, Karson asks Emma and Tristan for their predictions for the cannabis industry in 2024. Emma predicts that federal legalization will be a major topic in the 2024 presidential election, bringing the industry closer to nationwide legalization. Tristan predicts an increase in high-quality, specialized products and a decrease in stigma as the market evolves. The episode concludes with Karson expressing excitement about the partnership and the opportunity to help entrepreneurs in the Colorado cannabis industry through the technical assistance program. Did you know that the annual cost of compliance to operate a cannabis business is estimated to be $200,000? Unfortunately, many cannabis businesses spend thousands of dollars on SOP books that are never used and don't understand how to implement compliance measures effectively in their business. We get a veteran of the cannabis industry, Logan Goolsby originally worked on the regulatory side under four different Directors with the Marijuana Enforcement Division while the State of Colorado moved from medical marijuana to a retail or adult-use program. Working with LexisNexis, Logan codified and indexed the first Colorado Marijuana Laws and Regulations legal book in 2011. Now Logan serves the role of compliance specialist and officer; performing on-site inspections, reviewing sale transactions, security footage and working with federal, state, and local law enforcement and regulatory agencies. In this episode, we dive deep into building a compliance foundation for your cannabis business. Colorado’s unemployment rate has run significantly below the rest of the country for more than four years, allowing the state to post a bigger help wanted sign, one that attracted workers from other states, especially millennials starting their careers. That gap is now narrowing. Colorado’s unemployment rate rose to 3.1 percent in September from 2.9 percent in August, according to a monthly update Friday from the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment. - Marijuana sales in Colorado exceeded $1 billion as of August of this year, with tax revenue from those sales coming in at $200 million, according to a report from the Colorado Department of Revenue and its Marijuana Enforcement Division. It’s the earliest point in any of the four years Colorado has had legal recreational marijuana that combined medical and rec sales have cracked the billion-dollar mark. Total combined recreational and medical marijuana sales through August hit $1,022,245,511, according to the MED, setting the state on a trajectory to break last year’s record of more than $1.5 billion in sales. It also found that while sales of marijuana flower remained relatively steady, sales of edible products and concentrates like hash oil and live resin grew significantly. Between January and June, edibles sales shot up 13.8 percent over the first six months of last year, and concentrates sales skyrocketed, growing 94.6 percent over the same period. https://www.denverpost.com/2018/10/18/colorado-cracks-billion-marijuana-sales-record/
Today on Blunt Business our host Sean Eubanks is joined by Julie Berliner from Sweet Grass Kitchen. Julie Berliner is the Founder and CEO of Sweet Grass Kitchen, a Denver-based edible cannabis manufacturer founded in 2009. Sweet Grass Kitchen specializes in cannabutter-based edibles, and distributes to over 150 centers throughout Colorado. In addition to her role at Sweet Grass Kitchen, she is also a founding member and chair of the Cannabis Business Alliance Edibles Council. Julie has represented the edibles industry as a panelist on workgroups organized by the Marijuana Enforcement Division to develop policies on infused product serving size and potency levels and packaging. Julie graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder with a degree in education and psychology in 2008. When a friend asked that her popular chocolate chip cookie recipe be infused with cannabis for sale at his dispensary, she decided to take a left turn and launched Sweet Grass Kitchen. The company’s products are infused with single strain, full-flower cannabis plant, grown in house to ensure a consistent, safe, and reliable crop-to-table confection.
Scott Denholm spent the first part of his life on the west coast, then he moved east, and now he resides down south in Tennessee. This variety of experience has helped him develop an acute talent for understanding different people, which helps him greatly with his line of work developing track and trace programs for cannabis cultivators. He says it’s all about listening to what someone wants, to be able to figure out what they really need. After a stint in the Navy and time at ADT Security, Scott wouldn’t have ever imagined he would have found his way to the cannabis industry, but a consultant gig with the Marijuana Enforcement Division in Colorado set him on such a path, and now he’s implementing Franwell’s Metrc program in states all over the country to ensure their cannabis programs are efficiently and effectively regulated. Enjoy!
