Filipinos made up 4% of all registered nurses in the U.S. in 2020, but they accounted for more than 30% of all nurse deaths from COVID and they've long been the unsung backbone of the American healthcare system. A new documentary called “Nurse Unseen” shines a light on their contributions and sacrifices during a time of uncertainty, isolation and rising anti-Asian racism and violence.Reset sits down with the filmmakers Michele Josue and Carlo Velayo to learn more. The Halo Halo Podcast will be releasing their Crime and Punishment episodes for the Month of March. On this episode Jezzie and Sigi puts a spotlight on Emmy award winning director Michele Josue's five part documentary "Happy Jail" currently streaming on Netflix. The doc focuses on the Cebu Prison Detention and Rehabilitation Centre (CPDRC) which became an international sensation when its dancing inmates uploaded their choreographed performance to Michael Jackson's “Thriller” on YouTube in 2008. The series digs a little deeper and tells the tale from various points of view from inmates, prison guards, the prison consultant, Marco Toral–giving voices to those who want to tell their stories that are often ignored and silenced. Later Jezzie does a deep dive in generally understanding of the criminal justice system in the Philippines and its views on offender rehabilitation. He reminds us for the fixing of the week hat appeasing others or overly accommodating is not the path to rehabilitation.

Michele Josue wanted to tell the story of the tragic loss of someone very close to her - Matt Shepard. In 2013 she didn't just re-tell the story of his murder, but told the story of his life, as no one was telling it, from the perspective of those who knew him best. Check out "Matt Shepard Is A Friend Of Mine" and then check out Michele's new documentary on Netflix - Happy Jail!
On October 7, 1998, University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard was brutally beaten, tied to a fence and left to die because he was gay. It was one of the most notorious hate crimes in US history. Years later, Michele Josue, a close friend of Matt's, revisits the shocking case with never-before-seen photos and rare video footage as Matt's all-too-brief life is remembered through the vivid testimonies of his family and closest friends. Through the film, new revelations about the murder are revealed and the notions of forgiveness, loss, and redemption are explored by those who were there. LOOKING FOR MORE TCO? WHO COULD BLAME YOU! Hello, Doccalos! Get your rainbow flags out because we’re celebrating Pride month all June-long! Angela has taken over all the main episodes and Bob has fucked off to California to sell out the show to a bunch of podcast elitists. We’re sure it will work out, Bob. (Makes hand job motion). Meanwhile Angela kicks off Pride month for a special episode with her brother, Bryan, and they’re gonna talk about some real serious shit. Shit so serious that maybe they should have dropped this episode during the third week of June. Angela and Bryan will be discussing Michele Josue’s portrait of her old pal in the documentary “Matt Shepard is a Friend of Mine” and you can watch this on Hulu. The brutal murder of Matthew Shepard forced a national conversation that was long overdue. It was an act that was way more common than many in society would care to admit and we shudder to think of all the victims of homophobic hate crimes whose names we will never know. This portrait of Matthew is a personal one by those who knew him throughout his short life, and frames an interesting context of a young man who would become infamous. Shit gets real, but there may be a few chuckles somewhere. If you think Angela does a better job than Bob, then be sure to email us to let us know. If you think Bob sucks, then email him every day. Also, who writes these show descriptions? You might have thought it was Bob...but is it? Fuck Bob. Seriously. Apologies to Bob. Keep on Doccin’. www.documenteerspodcast.com Here’s the trailer to this doc: https://youtu.be/uZj46ewvR6k Here’s the website to the Matthew Shepard Foundation: https://www.matthewshepard.org/
At around 12:00 AM on October 7, 1998 in Laramie, Wyoming, Matt Shepard was tied up and brutally beaten because he was gay. 18 hours later a passing bicyclist found his body and called 911. He died 5 days later in Poudre Valley Hospital in Colorado. Made in the same location, time, and day, this 18-hour binaural recording commemorates the day when Matt was found as he would have heard it. Recorded with a DIY binaural head with 3Dio Silicone ears and DPA 4061 microphones. Audio recorded with a vintage Sony TC-D5 and Sony EF Type 1 Cassettes. Comfortable, circumaural headphones are highly recommended as the audio is very quiet but also because a correct binaural image requires playback through headphones. Level settings: The soundscape was very silent. Our general recommendation for your level settings is to set the level so that the tape noise is bearable, then lower it one or two more clicks. Special thanks to: Michele Josue, Matthew Shepard Foundation, Laramie PD, and the landowner for making this project possible.
