This episode took me a while to get to!  We actually recorded this in July of 2024, but it was a beast to edit, so it had been on my to-do list for a long long time.  I hope it is worth the wait! Elaine, Mandy, Ben, Alexa, and I drove around SF for 3 hours trying some of San Francisco's most famous Asian to-go foods.  And they did not disappoint! 1) We started in Chinatown at Golden Gate Bakery for their famous daan taats which were flakey and creamy.  2) Next we went to the Tenderloin for a Saigon Sandwich banh mi, which is the best value meal in San Francisco. 3) Our third stop was Dumpling Home in Hayes Valley, for some sheng jian baos, that had the perfect combination of crispy, pillowy, salty, fatty, and a little sweet, it's such a good bite of food! 4) From there we headed into the fog of the Inner Sunset, for some Rose Indian Cuisine vegetarian samosas.  The crunchy exterior and favorable soft interior was such a great afternoon snack. 5) We headed back towards my hometown and ended our journey at Fil-Am in Daly City for some perfect lumpia Shanghai and some lumpia turon (banana lumpia).  Talk about a strong finish!  I hope you enjoy our ASMR lumpia experience! All in all a fantastic day.  We kept it under $60 for this tasting adventure, and believe it or not, all 5 of us got pretty full off of that small expenditure!  Special thanks to Ben who dropped us off and picked us up at each location! There's no way we would have made it if we had to park each time.  Also special thanks to ALEXA!  Alexa did some fantastic research and presented her facts like an absolute pro!  Mandy did our photography, and Elaine did a lot of the ordering (and paying) for us!  It was truly a team effort!!! I hope you enjoy this episode.  Let me know if you want us to try any restaurants in the Bay Area, the team is definitely ready to head out again! Happy Filipino History Month!!! I was born, raised, and work in San Francisco, but I actually currently live one mile south of SF in a heavily Filipino suburb called Daly City!  That said, I find it strange that I've never gone to a sit down Filipino restaurant before... until now! We also tried something else new this week!  We recorded on location inside a restaurant!  It was a bit noisy, but it was a good learning experience, and perhaps we'll have more "in situ" recordings in the future! Vlogger Anne, Glenn, and I tried Pampanguena Cuisine on Mission Street in San Francisco, recommended by Glenn, and it did not disappoint!  Anne loves Patio Filipino in Millbrae for their sisig and pretty much everything or Lechon Manila in Union City for the crispy roast pork.  I love Fil-Am for their quick and cheap meat skewers that will only cost you a few bucks, but will satisfy your sweet and savory cravings! For sweets, Anne recommends House of Silvanas in Daly City for their silvanas (frozen meringue cookies stuffed with buttercream) or Patio Filipino for the Halo Halo dessert served in a fresh coconut.   My daughters love Ling Nam Starbread in Daly City for buttery senorita bread. We will need to get together again and try more dishes since the waiter/owner wouldn't let us order more sensing that our eyes were bigger than our stomachs!  Does anyone want to come next time? Thanks again to Glenn for hanging out with us! And shout out to Anne, who posts her food videos @alwayshannegry on Instagram or TikTok! His ultimate mission is to uplift and transform the international image of the Filipino by producing history-in-the-making Hollywood-Philippines global-audience, worldwide-release movies based on incredibly inspiring true to life stories of ordinary people who lived extraordinary lives. About 1521"1521,” a global feature film that showcases Filipino-American talent, is finally premiering across the United States on Oct. 2.Shot completely in the Philippines with a predominantly Filipino production team, “1521” brings the history and heritage of the Philippines to life on the big screen. The Philippines' Bea Alonzo stars as princess-seer Diwata alongside Hollywood legend Danny Trejo (Ferdinand Magellan), Filipino-American actor Michael Copon (who you may remember from “One Tree Hill” and “Power Rangers Time Force”), and Hector David Jr. (who also actually starred in a couple “Power Rangers” TV series). The film will premiere in nearly 700 theaters across the United States, making it the most distributed Fil-Am-produced film in the US. When we think of the ties that bind us, a nation of disparate people separated by seas and straits, spread out among 7,107 islands and speaking over 70 different languages and dialects, we tend to home in on food, religion and kinship. But perhaps the one thing we really all can relate to is good old Pinoy humor. Sometimes mababaw, often a clever play of words, our humor is side-splittingly punny and funny. It's just da bess!Flipping Pinoy humor with us is the legendary Rex Navarrete, one of the first Fil-Am comedians to become a mainstream international comedy sensation. He talks with surprising candor about how laughter heartens, heals, and humbles — not to mention unites — both audience and comic. Life is hard for many Filipinos. And whether you're an immigrant in the US, or a Pinoy at home trying to get through the daily grind, laughter becomes the balm that keeps us sane. Tawa nalang ng tawa!
