In today's political climate, the term gender-affirming care is often framed as controversial and used synonymously with “transgender for everyone.” In reality, gender-affirming care includes a wide range of medical, mental health, and supportive services that both cisgender and transgender people access every day to align their bodies, health, and well-being with their gender. In this episode, we're exploring what gender-affirming care actually is, its history and evolution, and the medical and political landscape shaping the conversation today.Additional Resources:Read Besties in CrimeGender Incongruence and Transgender Health in the ICDGender-Affirming Care for Cisgender People: Q&A with Theodore Schall and Jacob MosesTo Protect Gender-Affirming Care, We Must Learn From Trans HistoryWhat is Gender Dysphoria?Magnus Hirschfeld and the Quest for Sexual Freedom: A History of the First International Sexual Freedom Movement (Critical Studies in Gender, Sexuality, and Culture)Elmer Belt, Harry Benjamin, and the Birth of Gender-Affirming Surgery in the United StatesTransgender Health Protections Reversed By Trump AdministrationPuberty Blockers for Transgender and Gender-Diverse YouthWhat are Puberty Blockers? This week, we're joined by Anthony Sahyoun, member of the Lebanese experimental band SANAM, for a conversation that extends far beyond music. Recorded just before the band's autumn European tour, we explore their unique sound—a compelling blend of Arabic traditional forms, post-rock, noise, and electronic elements that defies easy categorisation. SANAM's origins trace back to an improvisational festival in Beirut, where musicians from different scenes were brought together to play with Faust's Hans Joachim Irmler. What started as a three-day residency evolved into something far more substantial, resulting in two critically acclaimed albums that seamlessly weave microtonal Arabic melodies with contemporary Western experimental music. We discuss the realities of being a touring band from Lebanon, where you can't simply jump in a van and drive to neighbouring territories. Anthony candidly shares what it's like to perform abroad whilst your homeland faces ongoing conflict, from the 2020 Beirut port explosion to the recent pager attacks. Including what the difference is between being home during crises versus worrying from afar. We also delve into Beirut's vibrant but precarious cultural scene, touching on everything from the city's techno resurgence to the tragic story of Mashrou' Leila and the harassment that led to their disbandment. Anthony offers thoughtful perspectives on LGBTQ+ issues in Lebanon, explaining how religiosity became weaponised during the civil war and how political thugs use marginalised communities as pawns in power struggles. And well, as long terms fans know, we inevitably chat about streaming and the ethics of it. Which is something we've spoken a lot about lately (and will probably speak more about in future too...). Anthony doesn't hold back, expressing a preference for people to steal music rather than stream it—a radical but consistent stance given the military-industrial complex's connections to major tech platforms. It's refreshing to hear an artist speak so frankly about these contradictions. Anthony is engaging, thoughtful, and occasionally righteously angry throughout this interview, and we had a great time chatting to him. In this episode of Crossing Faiths, John Pinna speaks with Sumbul Ali-Karamali about transgender identity, emphasizing its nature as a medical condition rather than a choice. She explains gender dysphoria as a debilitating psychological state with potential biological roots, highlighting the high suicide rates among transgender youth. Ali-Karamali asserts that, from an Islamic perspective, being transgender is not forbidden; she points to the absence of prohibitions in the Quran and Hadith, and the historical acceptance and approval of gender reassignment surgery by many Sunni and Shia scholars. She argues that Islamic legal principles, such as Maqasid al-Sharia (objectives of Islamic law) and ethical concepts like Tajassus (not seeking out transgressions), advocate for human dignity and non-persecution, directly supporting transgender rights. Ali-Karamali contrasts this inherent inclusivity with the restrictive anti-trans laws prevalent in some modern nations, suggesting these are often inherited from colonial impositions rather than Islamic tradition itself. She urges listeners to reject prejudice and embrace Islam's historically compassionate and adaptable approach to human diversity. Sumbul Ali-Karamali is a Muslim American who grew up in California, answering questions on Islam ever since she can remember. After becoming a corporate lawyer, she earned an additional degree in Islamic law. She specializes in synthesizing academic material for general audiences and is the author of The Muslim Next Door and Growing Up Muslim. A popular speaker on topics related to Islam and Muslims, she hopes to promote intercultural understanding with her work, at least when she's not watching Star Trek reruns, listening to opera, or (reluctantly) white-water rafting with her husband. Republicans in the Legislature filed more than 80 bills that would affect LGBTQ Texans, including many focused on public schools that would impact students, teachers and staff. Sex education and gender identity are a particular focus. In other news, the parents of the child who died in Texas' measles outbreak told an anti-vaccine advocacy group that they still wouldn't recommend the vaccine for other families; when Cindy Clemishire publicly alleged last year that Robert Morris sexually abused her as a child, legal experts said they doubted the former Gateway Church senior pastor would face any criminal charges. That doubt was rooted in statute of limitations laws, which typically determine how long an alleged victim of child sexual abuse can wait before initiating legal action against the person who allegedly abused them; and summer is not too far away, and in North Texas that might mean a trip to Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington. However, there are some new park policies to be aware of before you go. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The LGBTQ community has changed from something that was rarely seen to now something that is seen almost daily. Ray, E.Z., Mark, and Oscar jump into this topic by encouraging believers to not be scared to address sensitive topics with their kids. Be proactive. Kids are exposed to these issues as early as kindergarten, so it's crucial to teach them before the world does. Tailor the conversation to their age, and frame it in light of scripture. Ray recalls when these topics weren't an issue, sharing an experience of someone confused about their identity finding salvation. He emphasizes that repentance means turning over a new leaf.Teaching kids about these sensitive matters while fostering compassion is vital. Silence allows the world's lies to take root, leading kids to believe sexuality is shameful or that God doesn't care about their LGBTQ friends. The guys encourage Christians to avoid an us vs. them mentality, which can imply shame. All non-Christians are trapped in ideologies that promise freedom but deliver bondage, and LGBTQ neighbors need salvation too. The goal is to remind kids of the hope of the gospel and that we are all image bearers of God.The issue of whether or not to send your children to public school or homeschool comes down to conviction. Your children may have a strong relationship with the Lord if they go to public school, but E.Z. suggests evaluating whether they can withstand worldly pressures. Radical discipleship is necessary in any case, including daily devotions and biblically sound content. The guys suggest using any encounters with unbiblical ideas as teaching moments without reacting in shock, instead gently probing your children's hearts. In this conversation, the guys address how Christian kids should be taught to interact with LGBTQ individuals. Teach your kids about God's existence and accountability, instilling a healthy fear of the Lord. Emphasize that God is reconciling the world to Himself through grace. Remind kids they are created in the image of God, and His design leads to joy. Train kids to speak the truth in love. Focus on God's commandments rather than individual sins. For non-Christians who wonder why believers are against someone living their life the way they want to, know that God isn't withholding joy but offering greater joy beyond mere desires. All people were designed with purpose, meaning, and value. Don't settle for less when God offers fullness of life in Christ. Parents must lead these conversations with their children, helping them see both the ugliness of sin and the beauty of God's design.Send us a text Thanks for listening! Together, we emphasize the crucial role of establishing a solid foundation in biblical truth, equipping the next generation with vital tools to confidently navigate their beliefs amidst contemporary challenges. Our conversation ventures into the world of subjective versus objective truths, using captivating metaphors like "ice cream truth" and "insulin truth" to illustrate the distinction. We confront the perception of morality as subjective and argue for the existence of universal moral standards, addressing timely issues such as LGBTQ matters. By examining these through the lens of authoritative sources, we stress the importance of evaluating moral claims beyond personal or societal preferences, encouraging open dialogue within church communities to offer young people the answers they seek without straying from traditional teachings. We also tackle the trend of faith deconstruction among youth questioning traditional biblical interpretations of sexuality. By fostering an environment where doubts and questions are welcomed, we aim to build understanding and compassion. With over two decades at the church and two years as senior pastor, he discusses the importance of preaching on contentious subjects, ensuring church alignment, and providing clear guidance to congregation members. He highlights the need for clarity, preparation, and courage when addressing sensitive subjects from the pulpit, emphasizing that The Crossing is committed to sharing gospel truth in every area of life. Clayton kicks off the discussion with a 30-minute presentation followed by a Q&A session, ensuring questions are handled privately to protect those he pastors. He talks about his background and the church's annual practice of tackling difficult topics, stressing that truth should never be sacrificed for growth. Past sermons have covered mental health and abortion, with future ones planned on politics and giving. This year, they completed a five-week series titled "Messy," which addressed various provocative issues, including abortion, reinforcing the idea that no subject should be off-limits in church. He explains that addressing these issues is crucial because the congregation is already exposed to conflicting worldviews through media and misleading theological arguments. Clayton insists the church must provide biblically sound counter-arguments to protect their congregation's understanding and faith. Clayton outlines his preparation process for these sermon series, detailing how he and his church leadership ensure they are theologically aligned. This includes extensive research, historical context, and understanding cultural arguments, with comprehensive preparation allowing the entire church staff to be on the same page. He offers practical tips for delivering difficult messages, such as maintaining a "no emails and no applause" policy during the series, using timestamps in sermons for context, and prioritizing teaching over preaching to build a solid foundation. Clarity is crucial, and the church's stances should be clear and unambiguous to avoid multiple interpretations. Finally, Clayton emphasizes the importance of setting clear expectations for congregants and preparing them for how the church will address future topics, such as politics, with definitive positions.
