Christilisa is an Alabama girl who went to high school in Ohio and ended up in New Orleans for college and decided to stay. My first job was at Cici's Pizza in Massillon, Ohio where she began as and worked her way to prep. Once she made her way to New Orleans, she did what most students do when they are there, work at a bar. She chose a spot on Bourbon Street, of course, because she wanted to be where the action was. She found a job at a daiquiri shop, where she made...you guessed it, pizza (and calzones)! After a few years of working the nightlife, she moved into the world of tourism and worked for a tour and steamboat company in the French Quarter. The Steamboat is also a cruising restaurant, so she found herself working in proximity to food. This is where she learned about selling, storytelling, and crafting stories. Before jumping back into the business world, she tried her hand at writing. with an online publication, NolaDefender (now defunct), and started her journey as an unpaid journalist. She learned how to interview people, research, and write some compelling stories about music, food, and the culture of New Orleans. When she left the Steamboat, she found a job that changed everything. Starting as a sales assistant she learned about every aspect of the business. She wrote and edited recipes, was the occasional sous chef for Iron Chef-style competitions and sold cooking classes and special events. The biggest lesson was how the right story will bring the right people and situations into your life. In this John Brown birthday episode, Lou presents a reflection upon the "reunion" meeting at John Brown's farm that took place on July 4, 1860,  before the Brown family sold the property and relocated to California three years later.  Based on an account published in William Lloyd Garrison's The Liberator (July 27, 1860),  Lou reflects on this meeting--attended by as many as one thousand people--its leading spirits, its family significance, even the fact that Brown had both a grave mound and a grave marker.   As Lou points out, when this meeting took place,  only Brown was interred at the farm; the bodies of his sons Oliver and Watson, along with the bodies of many of his other Harper's Ferry raiders were not interred at the farm until  the last twenty years of the nineteenth century.  The July 4th 1860 meeting is a weighty and moving historical "snapshot"--the picture of a nation on the brink of civil conflict, a nation weighed down by injustice and the suffering of black millions at the hands of white supremacy, and the mediocrity of most of white society, including "moderate" anti-slavery people.  Quite in contrast the abolitionists stand out, and yet themselves are divided between pacifist "moral suasionists," and political abolitionists--militants who called for violence, and the significance of John Brown, buried beneath the fresh mound at North Elba, NY.   Yet, because of the ongoing struggle against racism, somehow the story of John Brown--in life and death--remains significant today, as it was in 1860.  This episode is introduced and closed by the wonderful song, "All the Brave Young Men," written and performed by Greg Artzner and Terry Leonino, known as Magpie.  You can find this song on Magpie's CD, "The Civil War: Songs & Stories Untold."  Also see Magpie's website at Magpiemusic.com.May 9, 2021 is John Brown's 221st birthday.  Hurrah for Old John Brown!

John is off in California role-playing Once Upon a Time in Hollywood this week, so Joe and Buffa muscled through the rare two-person show. Thankfully, our lovely personalities made up for John's absence, and we expect him to return with a vengeance next week! What's new? How about the WWE Royal Rumble happening this weekend? Buffa's pumped for that. Joe, on the other hand, is all about a new Switch release, Stories Untold, which rose to critical acclaim on PC a few years ago before finally gracing Nintendo's system. Considering Joe's not a huge fan of scary-ish games, we're surprised he had the guts to see this one through. Bravo! Meanwhile, Buffa has an eye on another Switch release called 198X: The Game, which dropped this past Thursday. Imagine a retro-inspired game comprised of different micro games celebrating some of the best genres the 80s had to offer. Seems totally rad. Will any triple A games come out in the next few months? Out of nowhere, Dying Light 2 succumbed to that nasty delay bug going around and is releasing… sometime in the future. It's a shame because we loved the original Dying Light, but maybe it'll launch right around the same time that the PS5 hits store shelves. Speaking of the PS5, footage leaked of the upcoming exclusive hack-and-slash game, Godfall. It looks solid for a launch title, but will it be enough to get people to spend in excess of $500 this holiday season? Not sure, but hey, any shred of info on the next gen consoles is welcome. Finally, we close the show talking about every gamer's virtual mountain to climb, the old backlog. Now that we have some breathing room between releases, what games will Joe and Buffa play while waiting for the likes of DOOM Eternal and Resident Evil 3?
