Host Jeremy C. Park talks with Drü Collie, Co-Founder and Director of Philanthropy for Sole Hope, who highlights the nonprofit organization and their efforts to provide shoes and medical care and to restore dignity and hope for children in Uganda. The organization's mission is to "equip the vulnerable to walk in freedom from life-threatening diseases and exploitation through education, empowerment, and medical relief." During the interview, Drü shares how Sole Hope was founded after he and his wife discovered the devastating impact of jiggers, a parasitic infection impacting children in Uganda, through a YouTube video. The organization focuses on combating this neglected tropical disease in Uganda, where it is often stigmatized as witchcraft. Drü and his family moved to Uganda for six years to establish the organization, and the organization is now based in Nashville, Tennessee, with a team of employees working directly in Uganda.Drü explains the process of Sole Hope's work in Uganda, which involves weekly village visits to wash children's feet, remove jiggers, provide education, and distribute shoes. The organization employs 48 Ugandans, including tailors and shoemakers, who create shoes from recycled denim sent from America. Drü emphasizes the importance of providing shoes, as it helps keep children in school, protects them from parasites and injuries, and addresses the stigma associated with jiggers. The organization has distributed over 370,000 pairs of shoes and operates a residential facility for severe cases.Drü discusses Sole Hope's expansion into mental health and addiction treatment, as they've found that many of their patients in Uganda face non-physical challenges due to poverty. He explains various ways the community can support their efforts, including a $10 monthly donation program and participating in shoe-cutting parties, which are being relaunched as team-building events for businesses. Drü emphasizes the importance of taking action when seeing a problem and shares how this journey has transformed his family's perspective on life and making a difference.Drü shares the story of Joy, a 10-year-old girl who was severely affected by jiggers, a parasitic infection. Joy was initially nicknamed "Little Duck" due to her abnormal walk caused by over 720 jiggers in her body. After receiving treatment at the Hope Center, Joy's physical and mental condition improved dramatically within a week. Her transformation not only changed her life but also impacted her village's perception of the jiggers problem, demonstrating the effectiveness of their intervention in combating this treatable disease.Drü wraps up highlighting the ways the community can support their efforts through financial contributions, Shoe Cutting Parties, Team Building Experiences, or visiting Uganda to see the impact firsthand.Visit https://www.solehope.org to learn more and get involved with Sole Hope.

105. Eliminating DEI negatively affects medical care where it's needed most

Lawyer Up! Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 19, 2025 38:02

It's not intuitively obvious, but discarding DEI can result in even fewer medical professionals serving already underserved communities in rural Ohio. The Trump administration is doing its level best to eliminate DEI on the premise it fosters unlawful discrimination, but as Abraham Graber, Ph.D, points out, DEI promotes diversity and equity so as to achieve better outcomes, and that includes better outcomes in terms of getting more medical students interested in practicing medicine in rural Ohio. There's been a longstanding problem in rural Ohio suffering from inadequate healthcare. Some counties have just a handful of doctors. Some counties don't have a single doctor or hospital. What if you live in, say, Vinton County, and you need an oncologist? Well, like they say in the mob, “Fuggetaboutit.” You're pregnant and need prenatal care? Same thing.Who picks up the slack in these counties? EMT crews, but their services are only a stopgap. The absence of medical care for these communities means the people in these areas are not as healthy as those who live in metropolitan areas, and they have shorter life spans. To get more medical professionals in rural Ohio, we need a concerted recruiting program. And that means recruiting from the counties that are underserved, because the people who would want to practice in those counties will most likely come from those counties and not from the large metropolitan areas. And here's the challenge. If kids in those counties don't see doctors and don't see their friends becoming doctors, they'll never even think about becoming doctors. And for those few who might aspire to practice medicine, they likely don't have the same life experience or education as others and, thus, face barriers when tested and suffer from the negative stereotype many have about rural Americans. As Dr. Graber points out, if we want to start getting students in rural Ohio interested in and practicing medicine, we have to start thinking about how we find these young people. Focusing on test scores alone won't get us where we need to be. We need targeted recruiting, and that's DEI.

Originally expanded in 2014 under the Kasich administration, Ohio is one of 41 states, including the District of Columbia, that has implemented Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act. However, the addition of trigger language into the current state budget bill would allow Ohio to disenroll from Medicaid expansion if federal assistance for the program drops below 90%. The trigger language comes as congressional Republicans in D.C. consider cutting the federal match for Medicaid expansion.rnrnFor Ohio, it's a move that could strip healthcare access from over 770,000 Ohioans; including about 362,000 in rural Ohio counties.rnrnAdvocates in health equity, maternal and infant vitality, mental health, and more have sounded the alarm on what it means to return to an era before Medicaid expansion. 446 Who am I? Medical Help that Saves Children's Lives Featuring Dr. Rachel Sewall: “I want to shout from the mountain tops!” Today we hear from Rachel Sewall, M.D., a Stanford pediatric endocrinologist who provides medically necessary care for transgender and gender diverse young people. She says that her work is highly emotional, with extreme highs and lows. People view this population with great fear and considerable ignorance as well. Valid medical information is powerful and important. Seeing how people view these young people is constantly on my mind. She says: When I was a medical student, I didn't have clear goals for what type of medical practice I would pursue. However, during my work in the emergency room, I realized, as did my colleagues, that I got very excited when working with children, so I decided to focus on pediatrics. I knew I'd be an advocate for LGBTQ+ young people. A colleague implied that they are rare, but I realized that wasn't true. In fact, surveys tend to underestimate the percent of trans individuals and LGBTQ+, do to underreporting due to feelings of shame and fear, but the surveys still suggest a trans population around 2% and an LBTQ+ population around 15%. So, together, we are likely looking at roughly 20% of the population fall into one or both of these two categories. As a first-year medical student, I did research on hormones. These are chemical messengers telling our bodies to do things. Figuring out the actions of hormones is like a complicated puzzle (Rachel explain a little, pleaee. I also went to a camp for kids with Type I diabetes. It was a perfect marriage for me! (Rachel fill in why please). My work with children and teens is a combination of medical and emotional support. More than anything else, these kids want to be listed to and respected. And the highs and lows I experience, as I mentioned earlier, can be extreme. Many begin sobbing when I talk to them, because they're so grateful that someone is listening! Reviewing basic definitions, your gender is usually assigned at birth, due to your sexual organs. They say, “Hurray! It's a boy!” Or “Hurray! It's a  girl!” But as your identity and sense of our gender evolves, and it may not be the same as the gender assigned to you at birth. Gender identity begins to form around 18 months to 3 years old, but can emerge at any time later as well. Most of us “know” our gender identity by the time we are 5 or 6, but it can also emerge during puberty as well, or even later. They may suddenly say, “this is not whom I am.” And some, of course, say “I am neither male nor femail.” That's where the terms cis and trans come from. Cis means that your assignment at birth and your gender identity—your sense of who you really are—can be the same. If so, you are a cis male or a cis female. But if they are not the same, you are a trans. For example, a trans male was born with female genitalia but a male identity evolved. And a trans female was born with male genitalia but a female identity evolve. Many trans individuals experience great distress when taking showers, since they may feel repulsed when they see that they have the “wrong” genitals. Gender identity has overwhelming power. Some have told me, “I just want to tear my skin off!” Sexual preference and gender identity are not the same or linked in any particular way. Sexual preference simply refers to who you love, sexually and emotionally, and want to partner with. Rachel continued, Hormonal interventions can be life-saving. If you are a trans male, having periods can be profoundly disturbing, often to the point of triggering suicidal urges. Helping these kinds and their periods via hormonal interventions can bring enormous relief. They often say, “Dr. Rachel, you saved my life!” I almost always work with the family, and my goal is for the family to learn to function as a team, all working together to provide love and support for their child, so they can say, “this is my child and I love and accept them unconditionally!” I emphasize that there is no right or wrong on their gender journey. Metabolic and surgical interventions both have their place in treatment. The time to go public with who you really are is an important social and cultural decision, and this also varies tremendously. But regardless of age, gender-affirming medical care can always make a tremendous difference in your life! Rhonda and I are deeply grateful to Rachel for giving us this wonderfully patient and clear education in a field that was not even covered, to the best of my knowledge, when I was a medical student at Stanford. We hope your voice today, Rachel, will be heard by many, and will hep to bring greater peace, acceptance, love and understanding to our many podcast fans. Thanks! Rachel, Rhonda, and David

Brandon Franklin returns to the podcast after a very long hiatus. You'll have to go back to Session 36 to hear his first appearance as a matter of fact. It turns out that he's been doing a lot of innovative clinical work in that time. Currently, he is the Chief Behavior Analyst for the Lee Specialty Clinic and a Behavioral Consultant at Kramer Behavioral Health. In these roles, Brandon has implemented various interventions to help individuals with intellectual disabilities access routine medical and dental care. If you're not familiar with this topic, it might sound pretty mundane, but as you'll hear, these populations really struggle to attend and participate in routine medical appointments, which, not surprisingly, has downstream negative health consequences. As such, interventions that improve on the current statistics can truly be considered life-saving. In this podcast, we get into the following: Common phobias associated with medical treatments. Brandon's personal experience with aerophobia (the fear of flying), and what he did to improve it. The basics of desensitization strategies. How he and his team members use these strategies to improve the rate of successful medical appointment visits. And finally, the research on this topic that he is doing for his dissertation. Brandon has generously compiled a list of references, which you can find here. He's passionate about this topic and is willing to talk with anyone about it, so feel free to hit him up on LinkedIn. Here's all of Brandon's contact info. Here's all the desensitization resources you could ask for. This podcast is brought to you by: Frontera. What helps us stay connected to ourselves and our identities even when we're patients in a healthcare setting? This is the second episode in a 2-part series inspired by listener Debbie Margulies' powerful question about maintaining control in medical settings and managing unhelpful pity from others based on your medical condition. Elizabeth interviews oncology social worker Samantha Hulett about her experience working with patients and their families. In this conversation, Sam shares the importance of identifying for ourselves what our priorities are in life. In addition, she speaks to the importance of slowing ourselves and our providers down in order to ensure that our needs are getting met and we are getting the clarity we need. Key TakeawaysKeeping a journal by the bed can be a useful way to record any thoughts that arise when the distractions aren't as prevalent before bedtime. This can become a tool to help later formulate questions and concerns to take to the doctor. Value-based decision making can be helpful in determining your non-negotiable priorities in your life, even while undergoing medical treatment. Slowing ourselves down before, during, and after medical visits can help us remain clear about the questions we need answered, and to help us remain grounded and centered. In this deeply moving episode of Warriors Unmasked, Chuck Thuss welcomes Laura DeKraker Lang-Ree, a mother, author, and fierce advocate for families navigating pediatric cancer. Laura shares her heart-wrenching yet empowering journey through her daughter Cecilia's leukemia diagnosis—a journey that sparked her mission to create resources and support for parents facing the unimaginable. Laura opens up about the shock and fear that consumed her when her three-year-old daughter was diagnosed with cancer. She recalls the early days of scouring the internet for guidance, only to find a lack of practical, emotional, and logistical resources for parents walking this difficult path. Determined to change that, Laura took her own experiences and turned them into something meaningful: her book, The Cancer Parent's Handbook: What Your Oncologist Doesn't Have Time to Tell You. Throughout this episode, Laura and Chuck discuss the emotional rollercoaster of being a cancer parent, the often-overlooked mental health challenges that come with the diagnosis, and the importance of building a strong support system. Laura's insights are both practical and heartfelt, offering listeners a candid look into what it's like to parent through a cancer diagnosis while continuing to nurture the rest of the family. Key Takeaways from Laura's Story: The Importance of Advocacy: Laura stresses how crucial it is for parents to become informed advocates for their children, even when the medical world feels overwhelming. Managing Emotions Amidst the Chaos: She shares strategies that helped her manage fear, grief, and anxiety during her daughter's treatments, including mindfulness, journaling, and leaning into her faith. The Power of a Support System: Laura talks about how she learned to accept help from others and how critical it was for her family's well-being. Turning Pain Into Purpose What started as a personal mission to survive the emotional toll of her daughter's diagnosis turned into a broader mission to help others. Laura created She Is You, an online community where parents can find support, share their stories, and access the tools they need to cope with pediatric cancer. Her book is packed with real-world advice, from handling medical jargon to advocating for your child's needs. Laura also reflects on the incredible strength she discovered within herself and within the pediatric cancer community. Her message is clear: no parent should walk this journey alone. Through her work, she hopes to ease the burden for others by providing the guidance she wished she had during those first terrifying days. Faith, Resilience, and Hope At the core of Laura's journey is her unwavering faith. She credits her relationship with God for giving her the strength to persevere through the darkest moments. Her story serves as a reminder that even in the face of unimaginable hardship, hope and healing are possible. For the full discussion, please join us on Patreon at - https://www.patreon.com/posts/dr-thaer-ahmad-119538590 Palestinian-American Dr Thaer Ahmad and Canadian Dr. Ben Thomson, both of whom have worked in Gaza, speak out against Israel's kidnapping and likely torture of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya. Thaer talks about his conversation with Dr. Hussam and the kidnapping of his own uncle. Ben talks about being suspended over speaking out on Gaza and shares stories of other tortured doctors. Then political scientist Ron Hira and historian Quinn Slobodian talk about the MAGA Civil War, Elon Musk, Donald Trump and H1B visas. UPDATE: Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya's mother has tragically passed from a heart attack. Dr. Thaer Ahmad, MD, is a board certified emergency medicine physician and a board member of the Palestinian American Medical Association. He has traveled to Gaza on several medical missions and recently spent three weeks volunteering at El Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis. Since returning, he has spoken out about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the need for humanitarian aid and services to reach the people. He is an assistant clinical professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and the global health director for his emergency department. Dr. Ben Thomson is a renowned public health expert, nephrologist and general internal medicine doctor, an award-winning educator, a board member of the Muslim Advisory Council of Canada and the Union of Medical Care and Relief Organizations, and a global humanitarian physician. Dr. Thomson's efforts have markedly improved healthcare in Indigenous communities in Ontario and globally in places including Uganda, and in Gaza through initiatives like the Keys of Health Fellowship and EmpowerGaza. Dr. Thomson envisions a world where resilient, compassionate healthcare is accessible to all communities globally. Ron Hira, an Economic Policy Institute research associate, is an associate professor in the department of political science at Howard University. His book, Outsourcing America, was one of the first to examine the economic and policy implications of the offshoring of high-skilled jobs. It was a finalist for the Benjamin Franklin awards in the best business book category. Hira has testified before Congress on offshoring and high-skilled immigration. He is frequently interviewed by the media about his work, which intersects STEM labor markets, immigration, globalization, and competitiveness policy. He is a licensed professional engineer. Quinn Slobodian is professor of international history at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University. His books, which have been translated into ten languages, include, most recently, Crack-Up Capitalism: Market Radicals and the Dream of a World without Democracy. Forthcoming is Hayek's Bastards: Race, Gold, IQ and the Capitalism of the Far Right. He has been an associate fellow at Chatham House and held residential fellowships at Harvard and FU Berlin. He co-directs the History and Political Economy Project and is on the board of editors of the American Historical Review. In 2024, Prospect UK named him one of the World's 25 Top Thinkers. ***Please support The Katie Halper Show *** For bonus content, exclusive interviews, to support independent media & to help make this program possible, please join us on Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/thekatiehalpershow Get your Katie Halper Show Merch here! https://katiehalper.myspreadshop.com/all Follow Katie on Twitter: @kthalps
