In this episode of The Valley Today, host Janet Michael, shines a light on the vibrant educational opportunities at Laurel Ridge Community College. Janet is joined by Guy Curtis, the Director of Marketing, and Lisa Heiser, a fast-track career training coach, to discuss the manifold career prospects through their programs. At the heart of the discussion was the fast-approaching Trades Job Fair on May 1st, set to take place at Hazel Hall on the Fauquier campus. This event is not just for the students of Laurel Ridge, but for community members of all ages contemplating a career switch or desiring to upskill. Heiser, who has been instrumental in organizing the fair, provides insights into what attendees can expect. “We're hoping to have about 50 employers, It's no secret that trades such as welding, HVAC, electrical work, and even fiber optics are booming sectors with rapidly increasing demand for skilled workers. Highlighting the expedited nature and financial attractiveness of these programs, Heiser cited several examples. “Fiber optics training is just five weeks, whereas heavy equipment operator courses are 11 weeks. Graduates are quickly able to start earning substantial incomes,” she elaborated. This sentiment is echoed by Curtis, pointing out the economic and social benefits of these career paths. “From construction project management to becoming a certified welder, the opportunities are vast and varied. Our trades job fair is just the starting point for many,” Curtis emphasized. Behind the scenes, career coaches like Heiser play a pivotal role in guiding students and career switchers alike towards their goals. Heiser recounted her journey from being a high school career coach, helping students figure out their post-graduation plans, to her current role where she mentors individuals often grappling with career uncertainties. “It's all about matching a person's strengths and interests with the right career path,” she asserted. Curtis reminisced about earlier industry conversations revealing the shift in career paradigms. Unlike past generations that often stayed in one job for decades, newer generations are more inclined towards having multiple career changes. This evolving outlook makes the role of career coaching even more significant. The discussion also touched on the increasing participation of women in traditionally male-dominated trades. Heiser shared inspiring stories of young women becoming welders and HVAC technicians, a trend also seen in various public works departments. Conclusively, both Heiser and Curtis emphasized the importance of reaching out to career coaches and participating in events like the Trades Job Fair. These avenues not only open doors to lucrative careers but also ensure that individuals are making informed decisions about their future paths. So, whether it's the parent looking to guide their child, or an adult in search of a career transition, Laurel Ridge Community College offers a promising gateway to success in trades. Exploring Relevance in the Food Industry: A Whole Church Job Fair

The Whole Church Podcast

The inaugural episode of our mini-series, "The Whole Church Job Fair," delves into the intricate dynamics of the food industry. Our hosts, Joshua Noel and TJ (Tiberius Juan) Blackwell, engage in a rigorous dialogue with esteemed guests, Joe Dea, a savory chef, and Elizabeth (Pang) Clyde, a distinguished pastry chef. The central theme of this episode revolves around the relevance of theological discussions in the day-to-day realities of those laboring within the culinary sphere. Through their shared experiences and insights, we seek to elucidate whether the doctrinal topics expounded upon in ecclesiastical settings resonate with the lived experiences of these culinary professionals. As we embark on this exploration, we aim to bridge the gap between sacred discourse and secular vocations, thereby fostering a deeper understanding of how faith intersects with everyday labor in the food industry. The podcast episode presents a rich tapestry of insights regarding the intrinsic value of various professions and the overarching theme of service to others as rooted in Christian doctrine. One speaker eloquently articulates the notion that professions, whether they belong to farmers, painters, or nurses, embody a divine calling to contribute to the common good, thereby revealing the sacredness inherent in labor. The discussion seamlessly intertwines theological reflections with practical applications, particularly emphasizing the biblical exhortation found in Ephesians 4. This scriptural passage advocates for truthfulness, constructive communication, and communal support, underscoring the responsibility of individuals within the Church to uplift one another through their respective vocations. The speakers challenge listeners to consider how their everyday work can reflect their faith, calling upon examples from various professions discussed, thereby reinforcing the idea that every job can be a platform for ministry and service. Ultimately, the episode encourages a holistic view of faith that encompasses all aspects of life, urging listeners to embrace their roles with a sense of purpose and commitment to the betterment of their communities, guided by love and grace.Within this engaging episode, a profound exploration emerges surrounding the intersection of faith and everyday work, particularly in the context of the food industry. The speakers invite professionals from various backgrounds to share their experiences, emphasizing how theological concepts impact their daily lives. Through a candid discussion about the challenges faced by those employed in service-oriented fields, the podcast illustrates the often-overlooked struggles and triumphs of individuals who serve in restaurants, kitchens, and beyond. By dissecting the scriptural principles outlined in Ephesians, the hosts draw connections between the moral imperatives of the faith and the ethical responsibilities of workers in high-pressure environments. Additionally, the episode sheds light on the necessity for compassion and understanding within the workplace, advocating that every interaction carries the potential to reflect Christ's love. The speakers stress the importance of community and support, urging listeners to engage in acts of kindness, recognizing the inherent dignity of every worker, thereby fostering a spirit of unity and collaboration in the pursuit of a greater good.Takeaways: The food industry demands a level of dedication and professionalism that often goes unrecognized in discussions about everyday work. Understanding the nature of God and His character is crucial for those working in high-pressure environments like restaurants. The dynamic of serving others in the restaurant industry offers valuable insights into the essence of Christian service and community. There exists a significant disparity between the perceived relevance of theological discussions and the actual experiences of those in the

In this episode, Niall is asking: Was the UN and Indeed-funded job fair for refugees held at Croke Park a bold move to help those in need—or was it an act of discrimination against Irish citizens struggling for work? The event, which took place just yesterday, has ignited fierce online debate. Critics argue that the job fair shows preferential treatment for refugees, fueling accusations that while right-wing voices claim “refugees don't work,” policies like these unfairly favor non-citizens over locals. Others counter that the fair represents a necessary commitment to helping highly skilled refugees integrate into society and contribute to the economy, benefiting everyone in Ireland. Some callers think the job fair was a great idea. They emphasize that refugees, many of whom are skilled and eager to work, need support to rebuild their lives. To these listeners, the event is not about discriminating against Irish people—it's about offering opportunities where they are most needed, ultimately strengthening the community as a whole. Meanwhile, other callers believe the fair is unfair, arguing that in a country where many locals are unemployed, such initiatives send the wrong message. They contend that the focus should be on helping Irish citizens first, rather than giving special treatment to refugees.Niall concludes by reflecting on the complex balance between humanitarian aid and domestic employment concerns. He challenges listeners to consider whether extending support to refugees is an act of solidarity that benefits the whole nation, or if it inadvertently sidelines the needs of local job

Break 1: Kia MOG (07.14.22 KIA MOG) STORY 1: Gwinnett Police Officers Participate In Operation Guthrie's Shield To Support Co-worker Gwinnett County Police officers held "Operation Guthrie’s Shield," a traffic enforcement detail inspired by Officer Ashley Guthrie, who was struck twice by drunk drivers while on duty. The operation, conducted on Jan. 16-17, focused on Georgia’s “Move Over” law, requiring drivers to change lanes or slow down near emergency vehicles. Over five hours, officers made 51 traffic stops, issuing 15 “Move Over” citations, 29 speeding citations, and 26 other violations, along with one DUI arrest. The initiative aimed to raise awareness about highway safety and the risks officers face during nighttime traffic enforcement. STORY 2: Snellville Resident Honored as Gwinnett Tech's GOAL Student Thomas Schoolcraft of Snellville has been named Gwinnett Technical College's Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL) winner, selected from 90 nominees out of 11,000 students. An electrical engineering technology student, Schoolcraft credits Gwinnett Tech as his "second chance" after struggling with university studies and various jobs in his 20s. Passionate about math, science, and technology's societal impact, he views this achievement as part of his "redemption arc" and hopes to inspire others. Sponsored by the Technical College System of Georgia, the GOAL program highlights technical education's value. Schoolcraft will compete in regional and statewide competitions this spring. STORY 3: Six Flags to Spotlight State’s Gold Rush History with New Ride Six Flags Over Georgia is set to debut a new family attraction, Georgia Gold Rusher, this spring. Inspired by Georgia’s 1885 gold rush, the ride features free-spinning gondola seating, 590 feet of U-shaped track, high-speed launches up to 60 mph, a 144-foot peak, and a dynamic water splash element. Themed around prospector William “Willy” Gibson, the ride integrates storytelling and immersive décor into the park’s historic Lickskillet section. Originally named Georgia Surfer, the reimagined attraction reflects the park’s focus on enhancing guest experiences with updates in dining, retail, and décor. Due to these fires over 100,000 people within three counties have been evacuated. These fires have burned over 111,000 acres of California vegetation, forest and wildlife. The San Bernardino County District Attorney stated that the Line Fire was an act of arson and that three fire-igniting tools and devices were found at the origin of the fire. The suspect was tried in court last Friday with nine felony counts. Last Tuesday, Sept. 10 Long Beach City Council met to pass the new city budget. The proposed 2024-2025 budget for Long Beach will be $3.6 billion. With an 11 percent increase from last year's budget, Long Beach residents can anticipate higher utility bills and increased pricing in city-wide fees such as paid- parking. Last Tuesday, Sept. 10, former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris faced off in the 2024 presidential debate in Philadelphia. Many topics were discussed throughout the debate including the economy and taxes, abortion, immigration, the environment and housing. Vice President Harris is hoping for another debate while the former president made a clear statement on Truth Social, “KAMALA SHOULD FOCUS ON WHAT SHE SHOULD HAVE DONE DURING THE LAST ALMOST FOUR YEAR PERIOD. THERE WILL BE NO THIRD DEBATE!” Although the former president feels no need for another debate, his running partner JD Vance will have a debate with Harris' running mate Tim Walz on Oct. 1. Last Wednesday, Sept. 11 Hurricane Francine made landfall in Louisiana. New Orleans suffered 7.33 inches of rain and over 140,000 homes lost electricity. At one point, 500 residents were staying in emergency shelters. The hurricane calmed down as it moved towards Mississippi and landed there as a tropical storm. The eighth Māori monarch was crowned last week following the passing of King Kiingi Tuheitia. The death of the former king, who passed at 69 years old, radiated through many people. Tuheitia's youngest daughter, Ngā Wai hono i te pō, has risen to take the throne. The 27-year-old is the second female Māori Queen in history after her grandmother.   Not only are we seeing wildfires locally here in Southern California but wildfires are also raging in Brazil with over 20 percent of the Amazon Rainforest being burned. Due to the fires, over 10,000 species of animals and plants are at high risk of extinction. Brazil says this is its worst fire in 20 years. When the Erie Canal opened in the 1820s, it brought with it an industrial system that radically transformed the daily lives of the American farmers who lived in the region. Out of this disruption came some of America's earliest labor actions, the rise of new Christian sects, and America's first daredevil, Sam Patch, who dazzled the masses and offended the powers that be simply by jumping off higher and higher things into water.   Why did Sam Patch become a national figure whose actions drew acclaim across the country? Why did those in power denounce Patch's exhibitions as “irrational fun” and seek to stop him from performing? And how does Patch's life tell the greater story of the Jacksonian Era and catch the attention of Jackson himself? The answers to all that and more are right here in Rivers Langley's expertly crafted story, as told to Ben and Narado Moore.   Rivers Langley is a Los Angeles-based comic, host of The Goods from the Woods podcast, and a scriptwriter for The Dollop. Links to Ben's appearances on TGFTW below.   Narado Moore is a Birmingham-based standup comic, host of the Uncle Rod's Story Corner podcast and co-host of Roy's Job Fair with Roy Wood Jr.   The story of Sam Patch, as told to Ben and Narado Moore was recorded in December, 2021 and originally aired as part of Goods From the Woods #310 “Sam Patch: America's First Daredevil w/ Ben Sawyer & Narado Moore. This episode includes a new introduction/conversation with Rivers Langley about Patch's place in history and how we can see his story in American life today.
