He was a side gunner on a B-24 Liberator in the Pacific Theater on an aircraft named "Pacific Tramp" Fueled with a zest largely unknown outside of WWII combat vets, Wino Willie Forkner and other early members of the Boozefighters Motorcycle Club partied with other clubs and the citizens of Hollister at its famous 1947 Gypsy Tour. Prominent at that party, Wino Willie was used later to teach the cast of "The Wild One", a movie inspired vaguely by that event, how to dress and act as bikers. Although the movie in general did not depict Wino's values, its impact enshrined Hollister as the birthplace of the American biker, and Wino Willie Forkner as its model. As befits a social catalyst, Wino Willie remained unchanged amidst the changes he helped provoke. On May 02, 1996|MICHAEL KRIKORIAN of the LA Times Sat down with Wino WIllie and JD who founded the Legendary Boozefighters M/C. I'll put the article link in the show notes if you want to take a look at it. In the Article Michael was able to capture the true meaning of how everything started out for us bikers. Before there was Sonny and the Hells Angels, before there was Marlon Brando and "The Wild One," there was Wino Willie and J.D. and a South-Central Los Angeles motorcycle club called the Boozefighters. On the Fourth of July, 1947, the Boozefighters invaded the Central California hamlet of Hollister and, as Life magazine memorialized it, took over the town. The incident set off a growing fascination with outlaw bikers, culminating in Brando's legendary "The Wild One" in 1954, with one exchange that still reverberates: "What are you rebelling against, Johnny?" Brando's character was asked. "Whatdaya got?" he snapped. World motorcycle traveler Clement Salvadori returns with another great road book. This time, he brings enthusiasts 30 stories covering 50 years of travel by motorcycle to odd spots around the planet. Readers can follow him through war-torn Vietnam to the sybaritic pleasures of camping out in a South African wilderness area, from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, from 1957 to 2010. While the motorcycle is always at the heart of these stories, far more important are Salvadori's impressions of the countries he rides through and the people he meets along the way. He artfully injects history, sociology, politics, and economics into the mix, and comes up with fresh and vivid descriptions of the many places he has been. On these journeys, he was frequently told, "The road doesn't go that way, you can't get there from here." But, for Salvadori, bad roads, bridgeless rivers, and seemingly insurmountable mountains were always part of the fun—if one may call it that. A big part of the adventure was to find a way, even when there was supposedly none. Clement Salvadori bought his first motorcycle as a teenager and has been riding ever since—in more than 70 countries on six continents. A well-known name in motorcycle journalism, he has written over 1,000 articles for several dozen motorcycle magazines, and is the author of a number of popular travel books on the sport, including the bestselling 101 Road Tales, a collection of amusing and engaging stories from his popular monthly column in Rider magazine. They were not selling the Dunlop tires, so I switched to the Michelin Commander II tires.  I had heard good things about these tires.  I had them change both my rear and front tires.  My front tire had some weather cracks and we discuss that.  I have been very pleased with the performance of the Michelin Commander II tires and put them through the test on our 2,200 mile trip we recently took. We tell some funny stories and give a thorough review of the Techniche “Hyperkewl” motorcycle cooling vest.  Several Sworn Few LEMC members purchased these vests and have been testing them.  Essentially, you soak the vest with water and put it over your T-shirt.  We go into detail about how these vests keep you cool while riding in extremely warm temperatures, thus “keeping your cool at all times”.  We give you our opinion on these vests and an overall rating.
