Is KTM okay or not? A year of scary news about financials for the massive Austrian maker of KTM, Husqvarna and GasGas motorcycles continues, with rumors of a make it or break it payment looming this week. It appears KTM's business partner Bajaj might have gotten the loan needed to restart the KTM assembly lines and keep the company going.  Jason Weigandt gives the latest on that, then chats with Frank White of long-time American dirt bike manufacturer ATK. Yes, the ATK brand is still around, now as a parts supplier, and it has partnered with Harley-Davidson on projects before.  Frank White doesn't like what he sees over at H-D these days, with the company reporting a loss of over $200 million in the final quarter of 2024. White and others would like to see the CEO of Harley ousted, and a revamp of the type of products the company produces.  While a recent vote will keep the current CEO in place for at least this year, these are still times of stress at two of the biggest motorcycle companies in the world. Seguro que no están todas las que son, pero espero que sean todas las que están. ¿He acertado o no? Al final, me das tu opinión Creo que las 10 motos de esta lista, que esta vez son 10 y no 12+1, han sido todas claves… pero seguro que hay otras que también han aportado mucho y no están… ¡pues para eso estáis vosotros! Me gusta mucho este “Oscar” que me dieron en una formación sobre trabajo en equipo que dice “ninguno de nosotros es tan listo como todos nosotros”. Pues eso, espero sugerencias. 1. Harley Davidson Modelo 5 (1909). ¿Por qué hemos elegido el “modelo 5” y no uno anterior? Te respondo con otra pregunta, ¿cuál es la mayor seña de identidad de las Harley Davidson? Me dirás que su motor en V. Y el este modelo fue el primero en llevar este motor. 2. BMW R32 (1923). Siempre lo digo: A diferencia de los coches el motor de una moto es parte de su personalidad incluso estética. Igual que H-D se identifica con el motor en V transversal, todavía hoy a BMW se le identifica con el motor Bóxer longitudinal. Y la primera BMW que monto ese motor, cuya estructura mantienen todavía hoy muchas BMW, fue la R32 diseñada por Max Friz. 3. Vespa (1946). Aunque no sean realmente motos me he permitido incluir, por su importancia, dos Scooter y uno de ellos es, inevitablemente, la Vespa, ícono del diseño, de la cultura scooter y tan italiana como la “pizza”. Es España lo conocemos bien porque se fabricó aquí. 4. Honda Super Cub (1958). El Segundo y último scooter de esta lista. Imagino que ya todos sabéis que Honda la fundó Soichiro Honda que fue, junto con otro genio, Takeo Fujisawa los diseñadores de este modelo, probablemente la moto más fabricada en la historia con, ¡agárrate! Más de 100 millones de unidades. Y sigue fabricándose. 5. Triumph Bonneville T120 (1959). Confieso que me he pensado si incluir esta moto o no, porque se han quedado otras fuera. Pero al final me he decantado por esta Triumph no tanto por convertirse en un icono del motociclismo de los años 60 sino sobre todo porque, hoy día, sigue siendo un referente en el diseño clásico, con muchas imitadoras. Es obra del diseñador Edward Turner y fue presentada en el Motor Show de Londres. 6. Honda CB750 (1969). Solo os digo una cosa: Si tuviese que elegir a una y solo una moto de esta lista como la más influyente y clave en la historia, elegiría a esta preciosa y bien diseñada y fabricada Honda CB750. Muchos la llaman la "Moto del Siglo", con razón. La CB750 fue la primera moto de producción en serie con un motor de cuatro cilindros, aunque casi os diría que eso es lo de menos. Es que esta moto ofrecía un nivel de prestaciones, precio y calidad absolutamente inigualable en su época. Cuando llego a los USA, mercado dominado por las “ásperas” y vibrantes H-D Honda se publicito, con gran éxito, como la moto “de la buena gente” … Los que iban en H-D eran malos o “malotes” y en cambio, los de las Honda, eran buena gente. 7. Ducati GT (1971). A lo mejor soy un pesado, pero insisto con el tema de la importancia de los motores en las motos. Y os hago la misma pregunta de antes: ¿Cuál es la mayor seña de identidad de Ducati? Seguro que vosotros, que sois muy listos, responderéis que el motor en V con distribución desmodrómica. 8. BMW R90 S (1976). BMW tenía fama de hacer motos de calidad, casi indestructibles, pero pesadas, lentas y aburridas… Y todo eso cambio. BMW preparó una moto para Daytona, la R90S Daytona. Su motor bicilíndrico de 900 cm3 refrigerado por aire se potencia hasta los 67 CV gracias a dos carburadores Dell'Orto de 38 mm. Llegaba a los 200 km/h y pesaba 215 kg. Tuvo gran éxito en competición y en la calle, se vendieron 17.465 unidades, mejoró la imagen de marca de BMW y hoy en día valen un dineral. 9. Suzuki GSX-R (1986). Esta moto está aquí por derecho propio, porque es un referente y yo diría que lo más parecido a una moto de carreras matricularle que un fabricante de motos de gran serie se ha atrevido a vender. Cuando probé la primera de todas alucine, me sedujo su excelente motor de cuatro cilindros de 750 cm3 y 106 CV, su chasis de doble viga que a mí me gusta llamar “tipo Cobas” y su ligereza, 175 kg. Una moto única. 10. Honda Africa Twin 750 (1988). La Africa Twin se aprovechaba de la imagen de las grandes Trail en el Raid más famoso de la historia, el París-Dakar. Y entró por la puerta grande, porque el debut del prototipo se saldó con una victoria y luego llegaron otras 3 más seguidas… mejor publicidad imposible. La estética de la moto de calle era muy similar a la moto de carreras, el peso rondaba los 200 kg y la potencia era de 60 CV. Pero lo más importante era la calidad de fabricación u construcción y su fiabilidad, clave en una moto aventurera. Cuando nos referimos al actual éxito de las grandes Trail todo el mundo mira a la BMW GS y se olvida, creo que injustamente, de la “África ruin”. Conclusión. Hay dos Honda y tres BMW… pero porque se lo han ganado. Aun así, me reitero en lo dicho, faltan motos, pero todas las que están en la lista se lo merecen… ¿o no?

Nene Valley H.O.G Chapter in the UK has been an 'orphan chapter' for many years.  In late 2023 and early 2024, a number of UK H-D franchise dealerships closed suddenly, leaving a number of H.O.G chapters orphans.  HDRC-GB do not rely on, nor do they have any links to H-D dealerships, but for many H.O.G Chapters, the dealership is the 'base' from which they operate.  This interview with Simon Barron, Nene Valley Director ( Feb 2024) finds out a little bit on how their chapter adapted to being an orphan, including some advice on who to carry on with the seasonal ride-outs, socials and attracting new members.

The 2024 Low Rider S arrived early this year. One of several motorcycles that Harley-Davidson decided to ship out before the typical January model launch. The Low Rider S comes in a Billiard Gray as the new BASE color that now replaces the vivid black. The vivid black is still available but at a $350 premium as it is no longer the base color. The Low Rider S remains H-D's flagship performance cruiser and continues to be extremely popular since the 2016 model year when we first saw it. In 2022 the Low Rider S received part of the "Further Faster" upgrades which remain some of the highlights in the 2024 model years as well. During Harley-Davidson's official model launch in January they only unveiled one CVO for the 2023 lineup. Typically we see 3-4 CVOs every year and so there was huge void left. Fast-forward to June and H-D drops a teaser for what will be one of the biggest single-year advancements in CVO history. As a reminder, Harley-Davidson's reporting format segments the company into three parts: Harley-Davidson Motor Company (all motorcycles except LiveWire), Harley-Davidson Financial Services, and LiveWire. This structure has been the way the Motor Company has handled its financial reporting since it transformed LiveWire into its own company in 2022. Overall, worldwide sales were down 16% on the previous year.  In North America, the Motor Company saw a 15% drop in sales in the third quarter of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022. In Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (which count as one region, called EMEA for short), sales fell by 13%. For Asia-Pacific, sales fell by 24%. Vào giữa tháng 7 vừa qua, một phái đoàn Pháp, trong đó có bà Valérie Verdier, Chủ tịch kiêm Tổng Giám đốc Viện Nghiên cứu Phát triển, cùng với ông Bruno David, Chủ tịch bảo tàng Lịch sử Tự nhiên Quốc gia,  đã đến thăm Việt Nam. Đây là một trong những hoạt động mới nhất trong khuôn khổ hợp tác trong lĩnh vực môi trường giữa hai nước Pháp và Việt Nam.   Theo báo chí trong nước, trong cuộc gặp giữa phái đoàn Pháp với thứ trưởng bộ Tài Nguyên và Môi trường Việt Nam Lê Công Thành, bà Valérie Verdier cho biết, thời gian qua, nhiều chuyên gia của Viện nghiên cứu phát triển đã đến Việt Nam nghiên cứu lĩnh vực môi trường. Cũng trong buổi làm việc, các nhà nghiên cứu khoa học của phái đoàn Pháp bày tỏ mong muốn được tham gia hợp tác lâu dài với bộ Tài Nguyên và Môi trường, nhất là trong việc triển khai quan hệ Đối tác chuyển dịch năng lượng công bằng (JETP) và các cam kết toàn cầu về ứng phó biến đổi khí hậu mà Việt Nam đã tham gia. Chính phủ Pháp đã cam kết sẽ hỗ trợ 50 triệu đô la Mỹ cho các nước đang phát triển tham gia JETP, hướng tới các giải pháp năng lượng tái tạo và giảm phát thải khí nhà kính.Trong công cuộc hợp tác Pháp-Việt về bảo vệ môi trường, nay cũng có sự tham gia của giới luật sư hai nước. Trong hai ngày 7 và 8/07/2023, tại khu Trung tâm Quốc tế Khoa học và Giáo dục Liên ngành, thành phố Quy Nhơn, tỉnh Bình Định, đã diễn ra một cuộc hội thảo về môi trường quy tụ các luật sư và chuyên gia hai nước Việt Nam và Pháp. Trong số các luật sư Việt Nam dự hội thảo, có luật sư Hoàng Cao Sang, Văn phòng luật sư Hoàng Việt Luật, Sài Gòn. Trả lời RFI Việt ngữ, luật sư Hoàng Cao Sang cho biết về nội dung hội thảo: “Đó là những vấn đề liên quan đến môi trường, mà ở đây các chuyên gia nói nhiều về rác thải công nghệ như thiết bị máy tính, điện thoại, khí CO2 và cả đường truyền internet, cũng như việc tải các dữ liệu thông qua đường truyền này làm nhiệt độ tăng, dẫn đến biến đổi khí hậu, ảnh hưởng đến môi trường.Đây là những rác thải của công nghệ cao do các nước phát triển họ tìm hiểu, rồi tìm cách hạn chế các loại ô nhiễm này. Ở Việt Nam thì chưa nghĩ đến những loại rác thải công nghệ mới này. Thường thì môi trường liên quan đến điều kiện cuộc sống và ý thức con mỗi con người, ở Việt Nam thì còn khó khăn, chưa phát triển và đặc biệt là người dân chưa được giáo dục nhiều ý thức về môi trường. Tôi nhận thấy hiện tại ở Việt Nam, người gây ra ô nhiễm môi trường cũng chưa biết mình vi phạm luật môi trường, và người bị xâm hại cũng chẳng biết mình bị xâm hại, dù điều này pháp luật đã quy định.Vì vậy, buổi hội thảo này sẽ đóng góp vào ý thức về bảo vệ môi trường, đặc biệt là ô nhiễm của rác thải công nghệ mới.” Cũng theo luật sư Hoàng Cao Sang, trong hội thảo tại Quy Nhơn, phía luật sư Pháp đã trao đổi những kinh nghiệm về thi hành luật pháp trong vấn đề bảo vệ môi trường:  “Các luật sư Pháp đưa ra các chính sách, các quy định của pháp luật của Pháp về môi trường như Luật REEN ngày 15/11/2021 nhằm giảm tác động đến môi trường của công nghệ kỹ thuật số ở Pháp; Chính sách khí hậu của Âu Châu; Nghĩa vụ đối với môi trường của các quốc gia; Sự tỉnh táo trong thời đại kỹ thuật số; Đòn bẩy cho các hành động pháp lý; Từ nhận thức đến hành động và đặc biệt là cải thiện điều kiện sống để người dân ý thức hơn về môi trường.Đây là những bước sơ khởi ban đầu của các luật sư Pháp trao đổi về môi trường tại đây, nên họ chưa có những hỗ trợ cụ thể. Nhưng tôi tin rằng qua lần hội thảo này, họ sẽ có những bước tiếp theo để những vấn đề mà họ đưa ra trong buổi hội thảo này được đi vào thực tế. Sau buổi hội thảo, chúng tôi cũng đã đề nghị các luật sư Pháp hỗ trợ và hết hợp cho nhiều chương trình khác nhau sau này, và họ rất vui vẻ nhận lời. Đặc biệt, trong chương trình này có luật sư Ngô Thị Mỹ Hạnh và Giáo sư Trần Thành Vân là những người Pháp gốc Việt, những người trí thức thành công tại Pháp và họ luôn có tâm niệm đóng góp cho quê hương Việt Nam. Tôi tin rằng họ sẽ có nhiều hỗ trợ cho Việt Nam trong nhiều vấn đề.”Trả lời RFI Việt ngữ, luật sư Ngô Thị Mỹ Hạnh, chủ tịch Hội Hợp tác Pháp lý Châu Âu Việt Nam, cho biết:" Lần này là lần thứ ba chúng tôi đến thành phố Quy Nhơn vì hai nhà khoa học Trần Thanh Vân và Lê Kim Ngọc, sáng lập viên hội "Gặp gỡ Việt Nam" năm 1993 và Trung tâm Quốc tế Khoa học và Giáo dục Liên ngành, mời chúng tôi đến. Lần trước, khi đến Trung tâm tôi có gặp thứ trưởng bộ Tài nguyên và Môi trường Việt Nam. Họ có mời tôi đến nói về chính sách chống ô nhiễm từ các túi nhựa dùng một lần. Họ thấy các luật sư Pháp quan tâm đến vấn đề môi trường ở Việt Nam.Lần này được hai nhà khoa học mời đến là cơ hội để các nhà khoa học và các luật gia gặp nhau. Chúng  tôi tổ chức hội thảo để đề cập đến thách thức môi trường và cải cách pháp lý. Nhà khoa học là Hà Dương Minh, cũng là gốc Việt, nói về chuyển đổi năng lượng. Các luật sư thì nói về chính sách về nước của châu Âu, về ô nhiễm tiếng ồn. Luật sư Đặng Thị Ngọc Hạnh, chủ nhiệm đoàn luật sư Huế, cũng có phát biểu. Hai ngày hội thảo đó rất phong phú và mọi người đến đông đủ để chia sẽ và trao đổi với nhau về kinh nghiệm, ý kiến, thông tin. Tôi sẽ đăng những bài phát biểu của tất cả các chuyên gia trên trang mạng của Trung tâm Quốc tế Khoa học và Giáo dục Liên ngành, vì đấy là nơi mà họ tập trung mỗi năm."Cũng theo lời luật sư Ngô Thị Mỹ Hạnh, Quy Nhơn, với Trung tâm Quốc tế Khoa học và Giáo dục Liên ngành, sẽ nơi lý tưởng để phát triển các giải pháp cho môi trường:" Chúng tôi dự trù sẽ tiếp tục các chương trình thông tin sao cho người dân Việt Nam và các công ty đều có ý thức để tránh và giảm bớt ô nhiễm ở Việt Nam, tiến đến một môi trường xanh và tránh những thảm nạn như lũ lụt, nước dâng cao ở vùng sông Cửu Long.Chúng tôi nghĩ là ở Quy Nhơn có nhiều cơ hội những giải pháp cho môi trường, vì ở đấy, hai nhà khoa học Trần Thanh Vân và Lê Kim Ngọc đã thành lập ra một trung tâm khám phá khoa học độc nhất ở Việt Nam. Nên khai thác trung tâm khoa học đó và mỗi khi có thể được thì cho học sinh, sinh viên, người dân đến Quy Nhơn, cũng như các đoàn trao đổi quốc tế đến để giúp ý kiến, kinh nghiệm cho Việt Nam".Kinh nghiệm của các luật sư Pháp càng cần thiết trong bối cảnh Việt Nam còn gặp nhiều vấn đề trong việc thực hiện Luật Bảo vệ môi trường năm 2020, có hiệu lực từ ngày 01/01/2022, theo luật sư Hoàng Cao Sang: “Về cơ bản, Luật Bảo vệ môi trường của Việt Nam cũng đã có những quy định để bảo vệ môi trường, nhưng vẫn chưa chi tiết hóa các trường hợp cụ thể, hoặc có quy định nhưng không áp dụng được bởi những vướng mắc của luật khác. Chính vì các vướng mắc đó nên pháp luật không đi vào cuộc sống được. Đơn giản như tiếng ồn. Ở Việt Nam đi đâu cũng thấy tiếng ồn. Tiếng ồn từ các công trình của các doanh nghiệp, và tiếng ồn của cả các cá nhân gây ra trong cuộc sống hàng ngày.Có một số trường hợp không chịu được tiếng ổn mà người ta phải vác súng, vác dao bắn/đâm chết người gây ra tiếng ồn, nhưng có mấy ai bị xử phạt vì gây ra tiếng ồn đâu. Hoặc xả khí/rác thải khắp nơi nhưng có mấy doanh nghiệp bị xử phạt đâu?Bên cạnh những doanh nghiệp Việt Nam, còn có những tập đoàn lớn của nước ngoài vào đầu tư cũng xả thải ra môi trường, nhưng rất ít khi bị phát hiện và rất ít khi bị xử phạt.Thứ nữa là mức phạt chưa nghiêm, nên việc xả thải của các doanh nghiệp/người dân vẫn tiếp diễn, bất chấp các quy định của pháp luật.Ngoài vấn đề luật pháp, tôi còn cho rằng phải cải thiện và nâng cấp điều kiện sống, phải phát triển lên thì mới hạn chế được việc gây ảnh hưởng đến môi trường."

In this episode of PING, Christian Huitema discusses how looking into the IETF data tracker allowed him to assess "how well we are doing" at document production. As the IETF has grown, and as the process of developing standards has got more complex its understandable it takes a bit longer to produce a viable RFC but some questions have been made about exactly where in process the delays come from. Are we really doing better or worse than we used to? and, why might that be? Christian took an interesting approach to the problem, using a random sample of 20 documents from 2018 (initially) and a hand method of collating the issues, and then applied the same methodology back into 2008 and 1998. His approach to measurement was rigorous and careful, separating his own opinions from the underlying data to aide reproducibility. Christian has a long history of network development and research, with experience in industry, and in the french national computing research institute "INRIA" before joining Bell Communications Research, and Microsoft. He worked on OSI systems, X.500 directories, Satellite communications, and latterly the IPv6 stack including the "Tededo" transition technology, the H/D ratio used in determining IPv6 allocations and assignments in the RIR model, and the QUIC transport layer protocol. We are at a significant turning point in the history of Harley-Davidson. After 65 years of the Sportster being in production H-D has now started to phase out the beloved air-cooled evolution engine after 37 years of it being the power plant for the family. We have now seen the two newest Sportster models bult on Harley's newest platform, the Revolution Max. This moves completely changes the Sportster in everyway. Harley-Davidson definitely put the "Sport" back in the Sportster family with this new liquid-cooled engine. Harley-Davidsonis facing two separate lawsuits in Californiaand Wisconsinfrom owners who claim the motorcycle company threatened to void their motorcycles' warranties if they didn't pay for service at H-D dealerships using factory parts. The motorcycle owners have brought two class-action suits against Harley-Davidson, Reutersreports. We give our thoughts and opinions about the new Electra Glide Revival and the overall Icons Collection Harley has introduced. We certainly all agree that it's a specialty motorcycle and will only appeal to a small segment of the market. Maybe this collection is a way to revive the rich history of Harley-Davidson and through social media posts, it may catch the eyes of those on the fence about buying a Harley? It may just be a way to get more eyes on their motorcycles.  Last, we talk about Harley-Davidson reverting back to the cable clutch system on their 2021 touring models. From 2014 to 2020, Harley had a much better hydraulic clutch system on the touring line-up. This has really stunned many loyal Harley owners as many feel it's a backward step in technology. It feels cheap for Harley to do this and then not reduce the price of the motorcycle. After all, this is supposed to be a premium touring motorcycle? And now with a cable clutch? Really Harley? The Harley hydraulic clutch system was a much better system and caused less hand fatigue. Plus, it was self-adjusting and always had a consistent pull and friction zone, unlike cable clutches. If you actually like some adjustment on the clutch lever itself on hydraulic systems, then there are many aftermarket adjusting levers to choose from.  You'll really need to listen to this podcast episode as we break everything down and tell you what you need to know. I learned during our conversation that Harley-Davidson did not go into this project lightly and really did their homework to make sure the Pan America would be a serious competitor in the adventure market, yet with its own unique style and flare. This is a completely new frame and an all new engine, the Revolution Max 1250 liquid-cooled, fuel-injected, V-twin engine, which has double overhead camshafts.
