1974 the year in rock is in the spotlight this time, for the first of a four part recurring theme, this time featuring nothing but albums out in the first 3 months of '74. Everyone from a Toronto trio, to the mutual admiration club that included Dylan, Joni Mitchell, and Lightfoot, plus what a future Whitesnake singer was doing, the first #1 from the Doobie Bros, and a wise warning from a famous Frank. Formed in 1974 in Boulder, Colorado, Firefall had several big hits on AM radio in the 1970's with “You Are the Woman,” “Just Remember I Love You,” and “Strange Way,” but also were known for their excellent musicianship, which got them played on FM radio, with tracks like "Cinderella," and "Mexico." The band's latest project, Friends and Family, puts a unique twist on the tribute album. Firefall's former and current members have played with many other bands over the years - so you get songs by the Byrds, Spirit, Heart and the Flying Burrito Brothers. They also tackle songs by bands that they toured with, like the Doobie Brothers and Poco. Ultimately, these versions were recorded with the idea of adding something different to the arrangements, turning these familiar tunes into Firefall classics. We talk again to founding member, Jock Bartley, about the care that went into choosing each song and why they were chosen. He also reveals that a Friends and Family 2 is already in the works.
Legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guitarist of the Doobie Bros & founding member of the band Steely Dan In 1972 he became a founding member of the band Steely Dan, along with guitarist Denny Dias, bassist Walter Becker, keyboardist-vocalist Donald Fagen, drummer/vocalist Jim Hodder and vocalist David Palmer. Baxter appeared with Steely Dan on their first three albums, Can't Buy a Thrill in 1972, Countdown to Ecstasy in 1973, and Pretzel Logic in 1974. He contributed the guitar fills and signature solo heard on the group's highest charting hit " Rikki Don't Lose That Number." in 1974 to join The Doobie Brothers, who at the time were touring in support of their fourth album What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits. As a session man, he had contributed pedal steel guitar on Vices as well as "South City Midnight Lady" on its predecessor, The Captain and Me. Baxter's first album as a full member of the group was 1975's Stampede. He contributed an acoustic interlude ("Precis") and significant turns on slide and pedal steel guitar.
Be prepared for an onslaught of unsolicited Michael McDonald impression as the Club takes on the Doobie Bros' classic, 'Minute by Minute' from 1978. With the record that years later would later become known as the cornerstone album of Yacht Rock, we riff on these smooth sounds and complex arrangements with some equally smooth, yet complex Daiquiris.Enjoy the spirits, enjoy the sounds, and have fun out there.

The interview we were most excited to drop has become the Episode we hoped we'd never have to share. In this Episode, Producer Char does a very somber open to the show to announce the passing our beautiful and beloved Dayna Keyes... she shares a little bit about Dayna and some thoughts on the future of the podcast. Then she tosses to Dayna's last official interview... with none other than rock guitar legend Dave Navarro, of Jane's Addiction and Red Hot Chili Peppers fame. Dave has a new art exhibit called Duel Diagnosis, currently running at the West Chelsea Contemporary in Austin Texas. it had debuted during the SXSW Festival last month, and its mission seeks to bring new perspectives and a deeper understanding to the experience of mental health through their artistic endeavors. Their raw and vulnerable artworks create a space for reflection and connection.Duel Diagnosis began with a conversation. In fact, the conversation had nothing to do with clothing or starting a movement. It was just a conversation between Dave and PADHiA, two friends who failed to shave their jagged edges off and fit in somewhere “normal”. And… all the weird, challenging, and also beautiful feelz that go along with that. The isolation, the disconnect, the inspiration, the gratitude, the shame, and the great humor- as our realities are so beyond our own imagination that it requires the injection of at least one familiar human instinct to be comprehendible. We believe you are one of us.And there are others like us who will come into the light as we become more visible. For more from Dave Navarro & to learn more about Duel Diagnosis, visit the website.Follow on Social Media: @DaveNavarro & @DuelDiagnosisTo support awareness on addiction & mental health in Dayna's honor, please donate to The Dayna Keyes Memorial Fund. The Doobie Brothers went through massive changes during their first commercial peak in the mid ‘70s. This week, we'll feature both eras of the Doobies – the Tom Johnston era and the Michael McDonald years. They talk about the origin of the band's name, the stories behind their biggest hits and the health issues that led to McDonald joining the group. All told, these interview clips from the various members tell a fascinating tale of a band that rose again after a near tragic situation. We also have a brand new interview with Myles Goodwyn of April Wine! Myles talks about the heyday of April Wine, including the infamous Stones concert at Toronto's El Mocambo club. Plus, we chat about Myles' new song “Some Of These Children (They Never Grew Up)” – a powerful lament about the children of Canada's residential schools. And finally, Myles and Tom take a moment to hilariously recount April Wine's battle with the Toronto media – and one critic in particular. In a short segment, we find out the haunting story behind Elvis Presley's first major hit “Heartbreak Hotel” – vividly told by the woman who co-wrote the song. We finish the episode with a wonderful 1986 interview with Anita Baker, whose voice is matched only by her ebullient personality. Anita tells Marilyn Denis about her early career setbacks (one record company guy said she couldn't sing!) and how she rejects the glitter and glam of show business. Anita and Marilyn have great chemistry in this genuinely entertaining chat!

This episode originally played 5 Jan 2021. If you're wondering where we talk about mastering in the context of Piper Payne's episode (https://www.howthisworks.show/020-piper-payne), you can find the question around, 'What is mastering?' around 27 minutes into the episode Having grown up with the idea that she wanted to perform and make music, Selena Rosanbalm talks with Skipper about being a musician and the work she's done to write, record, release, and promote an independent album in 2020 with everything that's going on. The conversation has a wide swing, starting with her love of yacht rock (think Michael McDonald or Hall & Oates or the Doobie Bros), her fear of things underwater, her early thrill with performing "I Just Can't Wait to Be King" from The Lion King, the number system for calling the chords of the songs to everyone on-stage, how some musicians are still producing new cassette tapes, how being an independent musician is more work than it may seem (because not everyone's Bono), Black Sabbath's debut album done in one take (allegedly), how the name Rosie and the Ramblers came about, and how the cover art for Selena Rosanbalm started with a piece of photo equipment. Stay tuned after the outro music for a piece of tape where Skipper asks if Selena and the members of her backing band wear masks when performing. This episode was edited and mastered by Troy Lococo. Special Guest: Selena Rosanbalm.

Murray Nagel was with Warner Bros Records for most of his adult life starting in his mid 20's before WEA distribution was formed. Murray's career spanned decades and he worked with the biggest bands during his music career like Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Doobie Bros, Prince, Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, James Taylor, Madonna, Rod Stewart, U2, Roxy Music and many many more. Murray tells us that he was there when progressive rock radio was created on the FM dial and funny stories along the way. This is a must-listen for those of you that love the early days of rock n roll. Recommended Music: Steely Dan: "FM" Iron Butterfly: "In-a-Gadda-Da- Vida" Vanilla Fudge: "You Keep Me Hanging on" Deep Purple: "Space Truckin" Grateful Dead: "Casey Jones" Alice Cooper: “Eighteen" ELP: "Lucky Man"
Night Ranger was a reliable hit machine in the mid-80's and their second studio album Midnight Madness was the one that solidified this reputation. The group originally started as a trio with Jack Blades on bass, Brad Gillis on guitar, and Kelly Keagy on drums. Keyboardist Alan Fitzgerald came out of the group Montrose to join the band, and he recommended guitarist Jeff Watson. The group was originally called Stereo, then changed their name to Ranger. The name was modified to Night Ranger to avoid a trademark infringement with a country band of the same name.Night Ranger honed their skills opening for Sammy Hagar (Fitzgerald worked with Hagar in Montrose), Ozzy Osbourne, and ZZ Top. Their popularity began to rise with the release of their first album “Dawn Patrol,” and exposure on MTV, although only one single appeared in the top 40 - “Don't Tell Me You Love Me” peaked at number 40. Midnight Madness would move the group from opening act to mainstream success with three singles including the massive hit ballad “Sister Christian,” written about Kelly Keagy's sister Christine. “Sister Christian” hit it's peak at number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, but was actually set to record back during their "Dawn Patrol" studio sessions. Night Ranger held off on recording it at that time, wanting to establish themselves as a rock group rather than a ballad group."(You Can Still) Rock in America" peaked at number 51 in June, and that is why we're featuring the album for this month although it came out in October 1983. Night Ranger has been described as pop metal or glam metal, but it is straightforward 80's rock & roll. One of the things that made Night Ranger unusual is that with their five members they had two lead guitarists, and two lead singers. This may have given Night Ranger a depth of skill that wasn't common in rock groups at the time.We hope you have fun remembering this rocking group and album! (You Can Still) Rock in AmericaThis hard rocking anthem would miss the top 40, peaking at 51. The song originated during a tour with Sammy Hagar. The rock magazines were trending towards New Wave, and the covers inspired Jack Blades to write about it. Hey! You can still rock in America! Why Does Love Have to ChangeA deeper track, this song is a good example of their dual lead guitars. Jeff Watson and Brad Gillis both were capable of holding the lead. Brad Gillis' training began with a 12-string, and many of their pieces show a crisp picking style. Gillis is the only Night Ranger member to appear at every Night Ranger live performance.Let Him RunAnother deep track, this final song on the album is more of a rock ballad with a 12-string feel. It is about letting someone go in a relationship and moving on. "Let him run, let him see what he has done."When You Close Your EyesThis fast ballad was a hit at the time, and hearkens back to an early relationship - trying to figure things out. It's wistful but positive at the same thing. The video is classic 80's. "I remember when we learned about love in the back of a Chevrolet, when it felt so good to be young. Feels like yesterday." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the motion picture “Ghostbusters” by Ray Parker Jr.This is the movie where you found out just how dangerous the Stay-Puff Marshmallow Man could be. Don't cross the streams! STAFF PICKS:Eyes Without a Face by Billy IdolBruce's staff pick starts us off with a hit single inspired by a French horror film from the 1960's. The song itself is about the end of a hopeless love affair. Idol's then-girlfriend Perry Lister sings the French part, "Les yeux sans visage" meaning "eyes without a face." Oh Sherrie by Steve PerryBrian features Journey front man Steve Perry with his hit single as a solo artist off the album "Street Talk." The song was written about his then girlfriend, Sherrie Swafford, who also appeared in the music video. Many think the success of Perry's solo project was a foreshadowing of his exit from the band, though he remained in Journey for several years afterward. Two Tribes by Frankie Goes to HollywoodWayne's staff pick was bigger in Europe than America, and bigger than his hit "Relax" on the continent. The song is an anti-war protest, and the video features portrayals of American President Ronald Reagan and Soviet Chairman Konstantin Chernenko in a fight with onlookers gambling on the fight and eventually joining in.I'll Wait by Van HalenRob brings us a fast ballad off the hugely successful album 1984 - the last appearance of Van Halen with David Lee Roth as front man for many years. The song is about getting the girl, and waiting for the right opportunity. An interesting bit of trivia is that Michael McDonald (from the Doobie Bros) collaborated with Van Halen for this track. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Close (to the Edit) by Art of NoiseNew Wave/electronica finishes us out this week. The song takes samples from several Yes song. The Art of Noise had a well known and somewhat controversial video.

Tom Johnston was born August 15, 1948, in Visalia, CA. Johnston fell in love with R&B music at a young age and learned to play the songs of Little Richard, Bo Diddley, and James Brown when he received his first guitar at the age of 12. He played in soul, blues, and even a Mexican wedding band in his teens and continued playing in a blues group while attending college in San Jose. It was there he met the legendary lead singer of Moby Grape, Skip Spence, who was drumming for the Jefferson Airplane at the time. Spence introduced Johnston to John Hartman and the two would play together in numerous bands, finally finding success when they formed the Doobie Brothers. Johnston wrote/sang lead vocals Listen to the Music Rockin' Down the Highway and China Grove among other hits for the band.
Having grown up with the idea that she wanted to perform and make music, Selena Rosanbalm talks with Skipper about being a musician and the work she's done to write, record, release, and promote an independent album in 2020 with everything that's going on.

Scotty & Ruttsy dissected the Banning of the Bonking Bubble, Collective Nouns, Footy's Willy Wonka golden ticket, Fawlty Towers, Political Correctness, Cambodian lawn decorations, Delvene Delaney, Back to school for Bank staff and Trump versus The Rocketman at Golf. An esoteric song theme this week from Ruttsy - songs with Runnin' in the title (not Running but Runnin') - as in Two Smokin' Guns not Two Smoking Guns – pretty esoteric hey??? We got Where are we Runnin' by Lenny Kravitz, Runnin' Back to Saskatoon by The Guess Who, Runnin' Down a Dream by Tom Petty & Long Train Runnin' by The Doobie Bros. And a whole lot of other odds and sods courtesy of TSG's…
Also, a very cool Fleetwood Mac story about their name as told by Randy Bachman of Bachman Turner Overdrive. We also played a virtual performance by the Doobie Bros! ONLY AVAILABLE on the Morning Bull Podcast!
On Fridays Morning Bull it was practice and routine as usual; meaning you were/will be thoroughly satisfied going into your beautiful weekend! Rob was off so there was no 'Did You Know Minute' from him BUT we did carry on as usual with the hilarity. The TrendZone with Chris featuring some great sound from around the world! Eating outside is a HUGE treat since the entering of Phase 2 and the allowance of patio restaurants and bars to be open. So we warned you about the wait and the length of the lines but Chris may not have heard us...! She tried to go out yesterday with her husband and it didnt go too well—we explained and heard her story. Its Yard/Garage Sale season! Some people are elated about this; others are not so. Thus, the great debate ensued: are you excited about them or are they just places for--”Walmart walkers” daylight as? We asked you and also gave some of our opinions, as we're want to do. Comedian Tom Papa joined the show to catch up with us since last time AND to plug his new book, titled the same as his new special on Netflix, “You're doing great”! Tom is always a great interview and laughs with us a lot. He is a must hear and that goes for his new special and book as well! Ron Pitts is a former NFLer who played for the Bills & Packers and grew up around some pretty influential people in the world of elite football royalty. He had a bunch of stories of the classic Lombardi Packers, Vince himself and much more. He also got into his thoughts on the Bills and how he thinks the team will fare this season. Movie Nights have been postponed for God knows how long. We asked you: if you WERE to have a movie night, would you be comfortable and HOW would you decide which movie to pick?! The Allentown Art festival is obviously canceled as most events are this summer. Dont fret though, we have an alternative for you: the Allentown Shart Festival. We discussed it, talked about some new additions and had some fun with it! That got us thinking: What do we/you miss about Allentown? Also, a very cool Fleetwood Mac story about their name as told by Randy Bachman of Bachman Turner Overdrive. As well as a virtual performance by the Doobie Bros! ONLY AVAILABLE on the Morning Bull Podcast!
Guest Host Ryan Werner joins us to peel into the layers of Doobie Bros. history. Reshaped by Steely Dan alumni Michael McDonald and Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, the Doobs are in top pop form on this 1978 LP. It's Minute 35, the literal minute Your Minutemen first journey into the Final Track of the classic 1978 Doobie Bros album, Minute by Minute: "How Do the Fools Survive?" After some Simmons-led clunkers will this McDonald penned & sung finale heroically buoy this album back into "Good Album" standings? Only time (specifically five more minutes) will tell! *Also bc of some conversation that is explicitly visual in nature towards the end of the podcast, we are obligated to ask you to pls have a picture of the Minute by Minute album cover accessible as you listen to today's program!
Your MxM Minutemen are back to NOT stop to watch the wheels go round, bc they are covering the second full minute of the accidental second-rate Van Halen tribute, "Don't Stop to Watch the Wheels" by the Doobie Bros. Will your Brandon, her Danny & my Dave find minor redemption in this minute's jazzy guitar excursions?? Since it was brought it up, the answer is probably 100% yes. Listen anyway!
Minute 16 sees the total & utter debut of the Classic Album MINUTE BY MINUTE by the Doobie Bros's fifth track, "Don't Stop to Watch the Wheels". Will this brand new Brother Jam prove to be a redemption song (bob marley hehe) for Your Minutemen after the disappointing quality dip of previous track, "Dependin' On You" or an out of nowhere Van Halen Roadhouse shit rocker? Play the ep to find out!
Founding member of the Doobie Brothers, the legendary guitarist/singer/songwriter Pat Simmons talks with Chris about moments that helped shape both his iconic band and his personal life.
For Minute 13 we're dependin' on our buddies Erik & Barn to help break down a vital minute of the Doobie Bros track "Dependin' On You"
The Minutemen (Presenters Danny, Brandon & Dave lol) pick up from last minute's Minute by Minute By Minute cliffhanger, launching into the first verse & chorus of the titular track of the Doobie Bros' classic album Minute by Minute! There's more Stins-nographing Michael McDonald's lyrics, crowning winners/losers and analyzing all the shuffley swampiness of this timeless "clock rocker!"

That unmistakable sound of West Coast smooth rock was all over the radio in the late 1970s and early 1980s with groups such as Hall&Oates, Player, Steely Dan, the Little River Band, Boz Scaggs, the Michael McDonald lead version of the Doobie Bros and many others. The genre, which incorporated elements of smooth jazz and soul, is making a comeback, and a group helping to make the past current is Young Gun Silver Fox. The band is made up of Andy Platts and Shawn Lee, who are not recording cover versions of 80s songs, but are creating new material that sounds like it was originally recorded from that era. They duo has a new album out called ‘AM Waves,’ and the guys are so skilled at what they’re doing that if you didn’t know better, you would think you were listening to songs you somehow missed 35 years ago. On the new episode of ‘Documenting Popular Music,’ journalist Robert Neil speaks with Platts and Lee from their studio in London about the new album and the retro sound that is starting to get a good deal of attention.
Talking (life, love, music and...) Motorcycles with Patrick Simmons of the Doobie Brothers and Special Guest Cris Sommer Simmons Daytona Beach, FL (April 7, 2015) One of the celebrated singer/songwriters of our time joins us this Wednesday night on Talking Motorcycles. Patrick Simmons of the Doobie Brothers has written and performed some of the best music of our lifetime and he joins us for tonight's show. Patrick is passionate about vintage motorcycles and recently competed in the coast to coast Motorcycle Cannonball on his 1928 Harley-Davidson JD. He was a guest on our show live at the Hilton Daytona Beach for the kickoff of the 2014 Cannonball and has agreed to be our guest for the full hour and we are most excited to have Patrick on the show. The bonus is that Patrick will be joined on the show by his wife Cris Sommer Simmons. She has been a major player in motorcycling for many years and recently released her third book on the subject. The Cannonball Diary documents her coast to coast ride in 2010 on a 1915 Harley-Davidson affectionately known as Effie. She is the recipient of numerous industry awards and honors and has encouraged women around the world to get out and ride. In addition to her 1915 H-D, Cris also owns several modern motorcycles. Patrick and Cris met in Sturgis in 1989 - Tonight's program will provide an insight to these great guests that you will not learn anywhere else! Talking Motorcycles is powered by SOZO! In this episode of Talking Motorcycles we go LIVE with some of the top competitors of this years event which departs from Daytona Beach this Friday night and arrives in Tacoma, Washngton September 21st. This epic ride is done on motorcycles built prior to 1937. Riders will be required to navigate well, ride and truly have an understanding of their classic machines. Patrick Simmons, lead singer and guitar for the Doobie Brothers! Norm Nelson is one of the best. He once rode his 1958 Harley-Davidson Sportster from Jacksonville, Florida to Alaska. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of that ride he did it again riding from St. Augustine, Florida to Alaska at 70 years old. He has won the vintage race at Datyona International Speedway 6 times on a Norton Manx. When the Historic Motorcycle Society chose Norm to ride in the event last year he nearly won it. In 2014, Norm and Team 23 are set to do it again hoping for a win. Norm will join us on this episode to discuss the ride just two days before they depart! Buzz Kanter, Publisher/Editor in Chief of American Iron Magazine will be competing in the Motorcycle Cannoball for the third time. This will be my third ride across the US on a motorcycle much older than I am. Rode a 1915 Harley twin on the first Motorcycle Cannonball in 2010, a 1929 Harley JDH on the second one in 2012, and will be riding a 1936 VLH this time. Interesting mixture of excitement, anxiety and anticipation right now. Buzz Kanter and Norm Nelson typify the spirit of the Motorcycle Cannonball. Both are excellent motorcyclists who will tell their stories as to why they ride in this grueling yet rewarding event that covers 4000 miles of American roads from coast to coast. My website is www.PaperbackRocker.com. You can find the podcast archives there. Find my books of rock and roll fiction on Amazon by searching my name, Matt Syverson. Follow me on Twitter @PaperbackRocker. Email me at bowiefan1970@live.com. Thanks for listening! The show notes are as follows: I have released the Kindle version of "Blue Whiskey". I thought it was going to take all of my three day weekend to format, but I did it in one hour, and it looks great. I can't believe I remembered how. It's weird that in person I always sell "Black Dog", but online "Band On The Run" sells much more. My last two episodes on Stitcher had some weird distortion thing in the intros, which I did not cause. That reminds me of how excruciating it was trying to make my CD sound the same across all playing platforms, and I talk about that a little. I talk about recording my album and all the four track recording I did over the years. I had some troubles with my album's producer, who may or may not have had a severe cocaine addiction. I tell how The Cars chose their band name. I talk about some things I heard author Hugh Howey say some things I agree with on another podcast. I talk about the legend of Ozzy Osbourne pissing on the Alamo and whether that is true. I also discuss the world's most prominent scholar of the Alamo, who happens to be a classic rock superstar. I observe the anniversary of Bon Scott's death and do a poor imitation of his replacement, Brian Johnson, which hurts my throat. The anniversary of "Spinal Tap" happened, too, and I talk a little about that movie. One rocker thought it was like a horror movie because it was so real. Next, I talk about Michael McDonald of the Doobie Bros. co-writing "I'll Wait" with David Lee Roth! Ted Templeton got them together. I also talk about Slash's regrets about his image, along with the Glimmer Twins, the Toxic Twins, and Guns n Roses. I tell a story about a Slash show my buddy went to. Finally, I talk about how to enjoy podcasts even if you have a sketchy 3G or 4G connection. You can download your favorites on Stitcher using Wi-Fi and play them back without using a live connection. Thanks for listening, and I hope you enjoy the episode.
