How is the food industry leveraging micro-influencers? Food Institute CEO Brian Choi speaks with Robyn Carter of Jump Rope Innovation and Brooke Stewart of Power Moms Media about how food companies are leveraging these everyday people with strong social media followings in niche categories to enhance and promote their brands. The conversation covers the growing importance of influencer marketing, how celebrities are being integrated into brands, the differences between inauthentic and authentic marketing, and the emergence of the micro-influencer in the advertising space. Hosted By: Brian Choi More About Robyn Carter Carter is the founder and CEO of Jump Rope Innovation, a trends and innovation consultancy that brings consumer and category trends together in service of smart innovation. Carter is also co-founder of IT! Factor, a tool that brings social media Influencers together with brands for future-forward research and idea development. Jump Rope serves some of the world's top CPG companies— including Unilever, Mondelez, and Mars Wrigley—as well as clients in other industries such as nutritional supplements and foodservice. Carter founded Jump Rope Innovation in 2005, shortly after her son was born, so she is well versed in some of the parent-while-you-work challenges that many are facing today. Before founding Jump Rope Innovation, Carter's previous life was spent in advertising, working in both Account Management and New Business, helping to create and implement communications strategies for some truly iconic brands such as Capri Sun, Red Stripe, and Maxwell House. She graduated from Cornell University with a BS in Industrial & Labor Relations. For more information, please visit: http://www.jumpropeinnovation.com/ More About Brooke Stewart Brooke Stewart is a marketing and advertising executive with over 20 years of experience working with top consumer package goods, fashion and retail brands. From snack foods to fashion, from NASCAR to hip hop, Brooke helped find creative ways to make brands shine. Early on, Brooke carved out a niche for herself and the brands she represented by clearly identifying with the targeted consumer. As a teen expert, she created and led a series of teen panels that identified emerging trends and interpreted them into actionable opportunities for her clients. She scouted key event partnerships and managed the relationships with ESPN X Games, NASCAR, and World Championship Wrestling to name a few. These sponsorship programs helped her clients stand out in the competitive teen marketplace. Next, Brooke left the agency world to tackle the client-side at Lugz Shoes. There she managed all aspects of the urban fashion brand's marketing efforts. Marketing to a young, fashionable, urban male meant turning on a dime when it came to implementing programs and advertising initiatives. This skill certainly came in handy in Brooke's next job as wife and mom to two boys. Seeing the opportunity to bring influential moms together with well-respected brands, Brooke founded Power Moms Media in 2009. Today, Brooke has cultivated a network of influencers that she works with to customize content creation for brands large and small resulting in increased brand awareness and customer loyalty. You're listening to the Westerly Sun's podcast, where we talk about the best local events, new job postings, obituaries, and more. First, a bit of Rhode Island trivia. Today's trivia is brought to you by Perennial. Perennial's new plant-based drink “Daily Gut & Brain” is a blend of easily digestible nutrients crafted for gut and brain health. A convenient mini-meal, Daily Gut & Brain” is available now at the CVS Pharmacy in Wakefield. Now for some trivia. Did you know that Newport hosted the first two ESPN X-Games? The first two feats of extreme sporting were held in 1995 and 1996. Over half a million people attended. Now, for our feature story: Rhode Island started expanding its COVID-19 vaccine rollout in areas that have been hit hardest by the pandemic. Starting Friday, Woonsocket residents age 16 and older became eligible for vaccines, and the same eligibility will open up Monday in West Warwick, Providence, Cranston, North Providence, East Providence and Johnston, according to the Rhode Island Department of Health. In addition, all Rhode Island residents ages 40 to 49 will became eligible this week. It's part of Dan McKee's plan to make all adults eligible in coming weeks. “We continue to vaccinate as many people as our vaccine allocation allows,” said McKee said in a statement. “Our increased capacity to get shots in arms puts us on track to meet the president's recommendation that all adults are eligible for vaccination by April 19.” Eligibility is being expanded in Woonsocket first because of how hard it has been hit, the state health department said. In the week ending April 3, Woonsocket had 128 new cases, an increase of 21% over the previous week, the agency said. It also has the lowest vaccination rate of any area in which eligibility has not been expanded. Roughly 20,000 new appointment slots were scheduled to open at 5 p.m. last Friday, including 1,000 at a vaccination site in Woonsocket. To read the latest on this story and more on what Rhode Island is doing to handle the Coronavirus, head over to westerleysun.com. And if you're eligible to get a Coronavirus vaccine, we encourage you to schedule an appointment to help our state get back on track. Are you interested in a new opportunity? You're in luck! Today's Job posting comes from the University of Rhode Island in Kingston. They're looking for a full-time fiscal clerk. Bookkeeping experience is preferred. Pay starts at $21.00 per hour. If you're interested and think you'd be a good fit for the role you can apply using the link in our episode description. https://www.indeed.com/l-Westerly,-RI-jobs.html?vjk=c833267992db5c1a Today we're remembering the life of Linda Becker Long, 77, who passed away peacefully on Friday at her home in New York City surrounded by her family as the late day sun streamed down on her always beautiful face. Linda was equal parts sunshine, summer fireworks, and the magic of Christmas morning. She always wore a smile and always made every day better for anyone she came in contact with. Linda made everyone feel special – because she truly believed everyone was. Her circle of friends was wider than a galaxy of stars and she loved every single one. Obviously, she was an unmitigated beauty – but her truest beauty was what resonated from within. She never held a grudge or had a harsh word for anyone. Linda was born in Jersey City, NJ – to the effervescent Arlene Feeney and the handsome Bill Mundt – her father would soon tragically lose his life as a pilot in World War II when Linda was just a baby. Arlene would eventually go on to marry the wonderful Al Becker – who adopted and raised Linda with love and devotion, in Montclair, NJ. And the union would also create not only a little sister for Linda, but a forever best friend in Nancy . For the last 52 years, Linda has lived and loved alongside her husband and soulmate, Steve. Their epic love story began with an engagement ring hidden inside a cracker jack box - and would go on to include a lifetime of laughter and adventures around the world including living in Puerto Rico, Panama, The Philippines and Hong Kong. Their commitment was built on trust, devotion and of course the deepest and most abiding love. She was as perfect a mother as there ever was. Because of Linda, her children say they have virtually no bad memories of their childhood. They always knew they could get through anything with their Mom on their side. Beyond her husband and two children, Linda would say her two grandchildren were her biggest joy. And they would say she is theirs. Linda made every day with her grandchildren a magical event. Linda loved watching the osprey nest at their home in Quonochontaug, taking the bus around Manhattan, watching the boats sail down the intracoastal in Delray Beach, Florida, but mostly she loved being with her family, just sitting around the dinner table, laughing and sharing what went on in the day. Now that really was her heaven. Linda will be deeply missed by all her family and friends. Thank you for taking the time today to remember and celebrate Linda's life. That's it for today, we'll be back next time with more! Also, remember to check out our sponsor Perennial, Daily Gut & Brain, available at the CVS on Main St. in Wakefield! We talk a lot about how important physical activity is, and we know this has been especially true throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, when people have taken to their local parks to not only maintain their physical well-being, but their mental well-being, as well. However, there is a form of physical activity that we don’t get to talk about as often: action sports. Sports like skateboarding, surfing and snowboarding can be really great outlets for physical activity, but also tools for social connection and fostering creativity and self-expression. And, many park and recreation agencies are well-positioned to offer programming around action sports, as some already manage skateparks or beaches. There are also a lot of ways park and recreation professionals can collaborate with action sports organizations to offer action sports opportunities to members of their communities, opening the door for even more people to experience this style of play. On this episode of Open Space Radio, we’re thrilled to be joined by Selema Masekela, a beloved commentator, journalist, host and Emmy nominated producer, best known for his work on VICE, E! Network, National Geographic, Red Bull Media House and the ESPN X Games, where he regularly worked with some of the best action sports athletes in the world. He is a relentlessly curious narrator of the human experience, and he thrives as a Black man who has historically been “the only” in the spaces of action sports and entertainment.  We caught up with Selema to learn how action sports and other forms of recreation have shaped who he is as a person, as well as: How the COVID-19 pandemic has increased his appreciation for recreation and outdoor spaces. How action sports can play a critical role in shaping youth, breaking down gender norms and fostering resilience. How to break down the negative stigma surrounding skateparks and make an argument that parks should implement skateparks. How action sports as a part of park and recreation programming — or partnering with action sports organizations (like Stoked, an organization that Selema co-founded which uses action sports and mentoring to close the opportunity gap) — can be used to build more equitable communities. How you can use the tools you have to ensure our public spaces are places where people feel welcome, included and safe, and more!
