About Ken Schmidt:Ken Schmidt is one of the business world's most in-demand executive advisors and speakers, driven by the acclaim he earned leading Harley-Davidson Motor Company's against-all-odds turnaround in the 1990s from the brink of financial ruin to global dominance. He's the author of Make Some Noise: The Unconventional Road to Dominance, the host of the Tailgating with Geniuses podcast, and co-founder of Torque Sessions Leadership Training. Ken's success, unconventional business approach, and playful outspokenness led him to consulting assignments with household-name brands and transformed him into a highly requested speaker with more than 1,200 keynotes presented globally to date. In this episode, Dean Newlund and Ken Schmidt discuss:Human-centered brand differentiationEmotional connection as a competitive edgeReframing traditional marketing strategiesBusiness transformation through customer feedbackThe power of language in brand identity Key Takeaways:Harley-Davidson's resurgence came from abandoning a product-focused mindset and embracing a strategy centered on emotional connection, human interaction, and delivering consistent delight.By directly asking riders one powerful question—“What do we have to change on this motorcycle to convince you to buy it?”—Harley created a fast, impactful loop between feedback and product innovation. The company aligned its brand around three key questions—what are people saying about us, what do we want them to say, and what are we doing to get them to say it—shaping its message and behavior for lasting impact.Harley proved real customer loyalty is built not on specs or price, but on small, repeated experiences that make people feel seen, valued, and emotionally tied to the brand. "What makes a business attractive is when it is known for who it is rather than what it is.” — Ken Schmidt Connect with Ken Schmidt:  Website: https://kenspeaks.com/Torque Sessions: https://www.torquesessions.com/Book: Make Some Noise: https://www.amazon.com/Make-Some-Noise-Unconventional-Dominance/dp/150115561XShow: Tailgating With Geniuses: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/tailgating-with-geniuses/id1576378423LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ken-schmidt-5b08115/ See Dean's TedTalk “Why Business Needs Intuition” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEq9IYvgV7I Connect with Dean:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgqRK8GC8jBIFYPmECUCMkwWebsite: https://www.mfileadership.com/The Mission Statement E-Newsletter: https://www.mfileadership.com/blog/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deannewlund/X (Twitter): https://twitter.com/deannewlundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MissionFacilitators/Email: dean.newlund@mfileadership.comPhone: 1-800-926-7370 Show notes by Podcastologist: Hanz Jimuel AlvarezAudio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. STOC 129: Balancing Tradition & Innovation: What Businesses Can Learn from Harley Davidson with Ken Schmidt   In this episode of 'Secret Thoughts of CEOs and Business Leaders,' host Chris Yonker interviews Ken Schmidt, a former Harley Davidson executive renowned for his innovative repositioning strategy. They discuss the key elements holding back family businesses and privately held companies, including family harmony, succession, financial management, and innovation. Ken shares insights into Harley Davidson's transformation, emphasizing the need for businesses to connect on a human level, foster a strong internal culture, and leverage their unique history. They explore how companies can balance maintaining core values with embracing new innovations to delight and retain customers.   What You'll Learn   ·       Humans naturally seek and return to sources of delight, regardless of how minor they are. ·        When the human connection is made, business wins.   Timestamps 03:48 Ken Schmidt's Journey to Harley Davidson 20:16 The Importance of Company Identity 32:04 The Role of Technology in Customer Interaction 34:30 Human Connection 37:55 Building a Memorable Business 43:20 Creating a Culture of Delight   Memorable Quotes ·       “Harley does all this other stuff that, that hits people at a human level. And at the end of the day, that makes the business more desirable. It makes people willing to pay more, for the privilege of being part of that community.” [19:45]   ·        ” How can we do what we do faster, better, and cheaper to get more stuff out into the marketplace? That's exactly what customers are not looking for.” [27:55]   Websites: fambizforum.com. www.chrisyonker.com. kenspeaks.com LinkedIn: @KenSchmidt Tailgating with Geniuses Podcast   Ken Schmidt Bio:   It's an impersonal world, where so many products and services are seen as easily-replaced, indistinct commodities. Whether you stand out or get lost in the crowd is a choice. A mindset. Ken Schmidt faced those same challenges himself and gained acclaim for his role in the extraordinary turnaround of the legendary Harley-Davidson Motor Company. That transformation was based on a change in mindset and a focus on answering three key strategic questions. While times have changed, what humans want and need from the businesses they buy from and work for hasn't. In his high-energy speeches, Ken inspires companies and individuals to shift their thinking and ride a path to success by becoming memorable – not for what they do or what they make, but for how they connect with people. Ken is author of Make Some Noise: The Unconventional Road to Dominance. He's also host of the Tailgating with Geniuses podcast and co-founder of Torque Sessions Leadership Training. In all of his endeavors, Ken brings an unconventional perspective that helps organizations and individuals reframe how they engage with their marketplace.   Ken Schmidt's career in the motorcycle industry began in 1985 as a specialist in corporate positioning and media relations for the then-struggling Harley-Davidson. He was tasked with helping the company restore its image, improve its competitiveness, and create demand for its motorcycles. Within a few short years, sales of Harley-Davidson motorcycles skyrocketed, and the company returned to prominence as one of the most respected, profitable, and frequently reported-on companies in the world. In 1990, Ken became director of Harley-Davidson's corporate and financial communications, serving as its primary spokesperson to the media and the financial communities. He frequently appeared in mainstream and business media to offer insights on nontraditional communications, customer attraction, and brand-building. His expertise and success at Harley- Davidson ultimately led to consulting assignments and speaking invitations from all over the world. In 1997, Ken left Harley-Davidson to take an ownership position with a highly successful Chicago-based marketing firm, VSA Partners. In addition to Harley-Davidson, VSA served a virtual who's who of the world's best-known brands. In 1999, he sold his portion of VSA to start his own business, Ken Schmidt Company, to combine two of his greatest passions, motorcycling and speaking. He uses motorcycles as a metaphor to expose people to proven ideas and concepts they've likely never imagined.   In addition to speaking and consulting, Ken is co-founder of Torque Sessions Leadership Training. Through a combination of hands-on training and interactive workshops, these sessions help individuals and organizations re-position themselves to become dominant competitors, maximize leadership effectiveness, build a people-first culture of innovation and foster loyalty among customers and employees.   Ken is also the host of the popular podcast Tailgating with Geniuses, wherein he talks with some of the most innovative and successful leaders in a variety of industries to discuss their unique perspectives on leadership, major challenges, and success. Ken's relatable and engaging hosting style has made the podcast a hit with listeners looking to learn from the best and achieve their own personal and professional goals.   Ken authored Make Some Noise: The Unconventional Road to Dominance, which gives business leaders an easy-to-follow roadmap for improving their competitiveness, using many of the techniques he championed at Harley-Davidson. He considers his work on 100 Years of Harley-Davidson, a global best seller, to be one of his greatest and most rewarding achievements.   After all he has accomplished, Ken remains committed to his philosophy of standing out, taking risks, and having fun in both his personal and professional life. He says, “Never do what's expected, make yourself as noticeably different as possible, and have a lot more fun than you're supposed to.”

Fixing Toxic Leadership: How to Coach Difficult Leaders Back on Track Leadership Challenges: When High Performers Push People Away Episode 242 ( Dotty is based in Milwaukee. Repeat of episode 192) In this conversation we explore: The challenges of leadership development – Why some leaders struggle despite their experience. How organizations decide whether to invest in leadership coaching – What factors indicate a leader is worth saving. Why high performers can still be destructive – The hidden costs of results-driven leadership. The most common toxic leadership behaviors – Overpowering, micromanaging, dismissing feedback, and creating fear. How personal triggers affect leadership style – The role of stress, past experiences, and subconscious reactions. The power of feedback and self-awareness – How leaders can recognize and change harmful behaviors. The role of gender in leadership feedback – How women are often labeled "too aggressive" or "too emotional." How to foster constructive workplace conflict – Encouraging open discussion without personal attacks. Strategies for team members dealing with difficult leaders – How colleagues can provide feedback without confrontation. Practical steps for leaders to balance authority with empathy – Tools and techniques for creating a more positive impact. ----- About our guest, Dotty Posto: Dotty Posto helps CEOs and Senior Leaders ignite their stagnant culture to inspire their people to outstanding performance. Dotty began her coaching and consulting business after working in Organizational Development for Fortune 500 companies such as The Chicago Tribune, Aon-Hewitt and Harley-Davidson Motor Company. Toxic Behavior in Leaders Often Comes from Personal Triggers Leaders who struggle with workplace interactions are often reacting from a place of personal stress, past experiences, or subconscious triggers. High Performance Doesn't Justify Poor Behavior A leader may be delivering results, but if they create a toxic environment, the overall impact on the team and company is negative. Common Signs of Poor Leadership Leaders who overpower conversations, micromanage, dismiss feedback, or create fear among their teams. Feedback Culture is Key to Leadership Success Constructive feedback should be built into an organization's culture, ensuring leaders receive honest input and can adjust accordingly. The Power of Self-Observation and Accountability Leaders must recognize their own patterns of behavior and work with trusted colleagues for real-time feedback. Emotions Play a Role in Leadership, But Shouldn't Control It Women, in particular, often receive conflicting feedback (too aggressive vs. too emotional), and they need to find their own authentic balance. Leaders Must Learn to Separate Issues from Individuals Workplace debates should be about the idea, not the person. Leaders must be skilled at discussing disagreements without making them personal. Team Members Can Influence Leadership Behavior Employees can tactfully question and provide feedback to difficult leaders, helping guide them toward better workplace interactions. Healthy Workplace Cultures Are Built on Trust and Constructive Conflict Leaders should encourage open discussion, embrace challenges, and create a space where their teams feel safe speaking up. ----- ----more---- Your Intended Message is the podcast about how you can boost your career and business success by honing your communication skills. If all you're known for is what you do, you've basically rendered yourself uncompetitive. -Ken Schmidt   For more aerospace industry news & commentary: https://goo.gl/3piJkw. To learn more about Craig Picken and the NorthStar Group, visit http://northstaresg.com/.    In a competitive marketplace, nothing kills you faster than trying to brand yourself on your product or service. That's a lesson Harley-Davidson learned the hard way.  At one point, the company was being outpaced by Yamaha, Kawasaki and BMW…until they decided to position themselves differently. They went from a product-focused business to a thriving lifestyle brand, and that turned into one of the biggest turnaround stories in American history.  If you focus on what you sell, you'll render yourself uncompetitive. If you focus on what people believe and say about you, you'll create a unique brand no one can copy.  That's how a historic company became an iconic brand.  How can we apply Harley-Davidson's strategy to our own personal and corporate brands? How do we focus on memorability instead of marketability?  In this episode, I'm joined by speaker, consultant, former director of communications for Harley-Davidson and author of “Make Some Noise: The Unconventional Road to Dominance”, Ken Schmidt. We talk about the secret to strong branding, whatever industry you're in.  Three Things You'll Learn In This Episode  The lesson Harley Davidson learned the hard way In business, competing on what we do is the death knell of market domination. How do we shift to something that sets us apart?    A game of memorability Building a brand is easier said than done, what are 3 major steps we need to take to build a strong personal or corporate brand?    Stand out by delighting your customers So many businesses are commoditized these days and they miss huge opportunities to stand out and gain loyalty. How do we get customers to come back for more?    Guest Bio Ken Schmidt is a premium-fueled speaker, podcast host, author and consultant serving the world's highest- revving businesses (and those stuck in neutral). As the former director of communications for Harley-Davidson Motor Company, he played an active role in one of the most celebrated turnarounds in corporate history – and got paid to ride motorcycles. He is widely known and respected as one of the business world's most outspoken, provocative, and entertaining thought leaders on competition, brand management, positioning, reputation management, human behavior, and loyalty, and has delivered more than one thousand keynote speeches to business and education groups around the globe. Ken's book “Make Some Noise: The Unconventional Road to Dominance” teaches how to improve business and personal competitiveness and is shared from his, as always, extraordinarily unexpected point of view. How to address this challenge with promising leaders Identifying the anger and frustration and how to redirect it Can we save this toxic person to become a true team supporter The process of diagnosing and correcting destructive behavior Looking for the balance in their life About our guest Dotty Posto: Dotty Posto helps CEOs and Senior Leaders ignite their stagnant culture to inspire their people to outstanding performance. Dotty began her coaching and consulting business after working in Organizational Development for Fortune 500 companies such as The Chicago Tribune, Aon-Hewitt and Harley-Davidson Motor Company. Dotty's clients say, through their work with her, they've experienced new levels creativity,  effectiveness, and well-being...without the struggle they'd become accustomed to.   Learn more about Dotty and her services at her website https://inplainsightinc.com/ You can find a free Energy Assessment and the free videos for Leadership Development ----- Excerpts from this conversation with Dotty Posto: I've seen leaders really get mean, I've seen leaders get judgmental and degrading, and to me that has no place in the workplace. ----- And that's what's making that action, whatever action is causing the  "does not play well with others" on my report card. Some people call it a personality conflict, which I do not like that term. It is,, we are in such a brain state of reactivity, that something happens out there that we've seen or heard or experienced before, and it's triggering us and our amygdala is saying that our brain is saying you're not safe. And it goes into fight, flight or freeze or there's also tend-to. befriend or fawn-on that some women do.  A woman might go into people pleasing, might go into, oh, everything's great, everything's fine. And, and never challenge anyone, or someone might be in the fight, and really go into challenging others and, and being very defensive and angry and upset, and, and so there's these two sides of the spectrum that people can react to when they have those triggers. And it's creating what I work with people to do is create that space of choice to be able to first realize that it isn't what's out there. It's got nothing to do with what's out there. It's what's happening in here. And in here, what's going on in our body? What's going on with that anger, that frustration? And what are the thoughts that are sending me there from an anger, frustration perspective? ----- I think there's a few things. When I first started working at Harley, one of my managers gave me three leadership principles. And one of them was get curious. Before you get furious, I am a huge proponent of providing feedback. And if they see an escalating situation, it might even be get curious, ask a question. Say, Hey, you seem to be getting upset. What's happening that's creating this frustration, help us understand why you're getting frustrated here. ----- ----more---- Your Intended Message is the podcast about how you can boost your career and business success by honing your communication skills. Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com In this episode, I'm joined by Lurch, and we discuss the fact that Harley-Davidson sales dropped by 16% in the 3rd quarter of 2023.  We give you the numbers and break them down.  We provide you with Harley-Davidson's response to the numbers.  We also give our thoughts on the topic.  2023 has been so far so good for Harley-Davidson fanatics. The year started with the reveal of a few new big cruisers, followed by H-D's new breed of sub-500cc offerings in Asia. Then came the headline-making 2023 CVO duo, which started a new chapter of modernity for the company. However, the story seems different behind the scenes, i.e. in terms of the MoCo's financials. As a reminder, Harley-Davidson's reporting format segments the company into three parts: Harley-Davidson Motor Company (all motorcycles except LiveWire), Harley-Davidson Financial Services, and LiveWire. This structure has been the way the Motor Company has handled its financial reporting since it transformed LiveWire into its own company in 2022. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Harley-Davidson reported that retail sales of all its motorcycles (excluding LiveWire) declined in all geographic regions in the third quarter of 2023. Overall, worldwide sales were down 16% on the previous year.  In North America, the Motor Company saw a 15% drop in sales in the third quarter of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022. In Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (which count as one region, called EMEA for short), sales fell by 13%. For Asia-Pacific, sales fell by 24%. Finally, in Latin America, sales fell by 11% in the third quarter of 2023. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! So what is Harley-Davidson saying?  "Against a challenging macro and consumer backdrop, we have been able to achieve a result that preserves profitability at an industry-leading level. In addition, we successfully launched our pinnacle CVO motorcycles, with CVO retail sales up 25%," said Jochen Zeitz, Chairman, President and CEO of Harley-Davidson. "Harley-Davidson remains committed to its Hardwire strategy with a focus on both desirability and profitability, and we will do everything possible to achieve our goals while being realistic that current market conditions are complex. We are gearing up for '24 and will ensure that we are fully aligned and ready as we close out the year with Q4." NEW FREE VIDEO RELEASED: Harley Can't Void Your Warranty Anymore For This! EFI Tuners?

Adam Sublett is an Account Manager at Benchmark Craftsmen - a trade show display builder that has been working with some of the largest brands in the US for decades. Adam talks about pivoting for survival during this pandemic. Adam started full time at Benchmark in 2007, but has always been involved in the industry being third generation in the business. His career started on the service side supervising installations and dismantles of tradeshow booths and other exhibits all over the country. After that, Adam took what he learned on the road and relayed that experience into managing production for the better part of a decade. He has managed key accounts for the company over the past few years including Diebold Nixdorf in North Canton, Ohio and Harley-Davidson Motor Company in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Most recently, Adam has been focusing on the overall operations of the company. Adam's top tips: Tip #1 – Be steady and kind. The work we do in the trade show industry is challenging enough, certainly it can be stressful at times – a bad attitude makes that 10x worse. That’s something I have been trying to work on myself over the past few years (some days are better than others, admittedly). Try to have some fun with it all. Tip #2 - Travelers out there – keep a notebook and write down all the cool restaurants or scenic spots that you go to. I feel like I failed miserably at this early in my career when I was traveling a lot – I would go to some great restaurant and never bother to write the name down. I would always try to remember that spot the next time I was in that particular city – and I never could. I worked with a guy that did actually keep a restaurant journal and now I have to bother him every time I travel and get the name of a cool spot in Chicago or Atlanta. The top 1-2 takeaways you have for the listeners I think as an industry, we find ourselves in a frustrating situation that we can not just work harder, or longer to fix the problem. Our industry is not loaded with patient people, I know I am not – but that is what we have to do right now. We are born problem solvers, so it is hard for us all to sit and spectate from the sidelines. I think that our community has been impacted harder than most other industries during this time. We were one of the first to be shut down and will most likely one of the last back to relevance. I think it’s important to reach out to our elected officials and ask that they support the live events industry in the coming months. For so many small businesses, it is literally one day at a time and we will need the help to stay alive until live events return. Welcome back to season 6 of The Merriweather Council Podcast. ► If you are listening to today's episode, screenshot and tag us on IG @merriweatherc! Last year I went on an epic journey to see the Backstreet Boys five times in concert. On my journey, I popped in on Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Did you know that Milwaukee is the home of the Harley Davidson Motor Company? Neither did I! But the friend I was traveling with did and she suggested that doing our non-BSB hours we visit their museum. Not one for museums, I wasn't hyped about it but we had already been to every brewery in town so, we went! I LOVED IT. Surprising, considering i don't care much for museums or motorcycles. But this museum was basically a shrine to entrepreneurship and you know I can get hyped about that. In this episode I'm sharing some of the key things I loved and learned at the HD museum that relate to business and entrepreneurship.  For full show notes and links mentioned in this episode, visit merriweathercouncilblog.com/113   For more free handmade business advice, visit merriweathercouncilblog.com/podcast   To learn about our handmade business community visit the jointhecouncilnow.com
