Today, I give you some excerpts from my live chat conversation with scholar Robert J. Monson. We speak together some about the desert elders, but also about Robert's work at the intersection of Blackness, disability, and softness (among other things) and we get into the topics of lust, sexuality, desire which the church has notoriously gotten wrong. What happens when the thing you most want to share is also the thing that terrifies you most?In this episode, Anna sits down with poet and author Mer Monson to talk about Mer's debut poetry collection, For the Wounded, and the deeply human journey that brought it into the world. Together, they explore writing as a place of refuge, the connection between depression and expression, the fear of being seen, and the slow, tender process of creating from a place of truth rather than performance.Mer shares how journaling became a lifeline early in life, how writing came alive for her during a cancer diagnosis, and how a season of grief, loss, and spiritual unraveling led to the poems in this collection. Anna and Mer also reflect on the coaching process they shared together, and on what it means to move toward visibility with self-compassion, support, and nervous-system safety. This conversation is for anyone standing at the threshold between hiding and expression, especially if your desire to create feels inseparable from your fear.In this episode, we explore:• How Mer's path through cancer, grief, and spiritual change led her more deeply into writing • Why poetry asks to be experienced slowly, from “the neck down” • The fear that can arise around sharing honest creative work • How fear can disguise itself so well that you don't even know what you really want • The role of coaching, publishing support, and self-compassion in helping creative work come into form • The connection between chronic pain, stress, visibility, and self-expression • What it looks like to move at the pace your body actually needs • Why expression can be part of aliveness, healing, and becoming more fully human About Mer:Mer Monson fell in love with writing during a cancer adventure in 2015, and has studied Method Writing since 2019. She is the author of For the Wounded, Reality Bathed in Hope and a featured author in Stories from the Muses. Her essays and poems have been published in Shark Reef, Adanna, Method Writers Speak, Exponent II, and Say More. Her past adventures include time as a K–12 school counselor, adult educational counselor, Advanced BodyTalk practitioner, and Master Transformational Coach. Some conversations don't try to fix grief. They make room for it—without rushing past it. In this episode of My Love of Life Energy, I'm joined by Mer Monson to explore the spirit behind Elegies for the Wounded—and what it means to let language hold what hurts, without bypassing what's true. We explore: What an “elegy” really is—and why it matters How writing can become a way of staying present with pain The tension between faith, loss, and what can't be explained Why “walking in the dark” isn't failure—it's honesty How something tender can emerge when we stop forcing light To learn more about Mer, please visit www.MerMonson.com

On this episode we talk with Dr. Kristen Case about Henry David Thoreau and the enduring pedagogical relevance of his life and writing, as well as about the Monson Seminar, a full-scholarship three-week residential course for highly-motivated Pell-eligible and first-generation college students pursuing creative and research-based projects based in Monson, Maine, and accredited through the University of Southern Maine. Kristen is the Executive Director and Lead Faculty of the Monson Seminar, which is entering its 5th year. She is a lifelong teacher in elementary, middle school, and university settings, as well as an award winning poet and an important Thoreau scholar. In this conversation, we explored Kristen's recent book Henry David Thoreau's Kalendar: Charts and Observations of Natural Phenomena, published in 2025 by Milkweed Editions. This beautiful book presents a fascinating project from the last years of Thoreau's life for the first time, namely an ambitious effort to chart and document both natural and inner seasonal phenomena across multiple years in a graphic visual form. Using this rich source material, Kristen's essays present a stimulating interpretation of Thoreau's most mature and seasoned vision of how to live a meaningful and grounded life here on Earth. The Monson Seminar - https://www.themonsonseminar.org/Henry David Thoreau's Kalendar - https://milkweed.org/book/henry-david-thoreaus-kalendarThe Mountain School - https://www.mountainschool.org/Thoreau College - https://thoreaucollege.org/

What vegetable is best? This may seem like an unimportant question, but it's actually vital to today's discussion. Okay, that's not true at all. We just wanted to talk about vegetables. The real important topic of the day is lingering anger issues about being victimized. It's not healthy to bury your feelings, but it's equally unhealthy to let them control you. Finding the balance can be one of the hardest things you'll ever have to do.
In this episode, Wendy speaks with Buddhist scholar and meditation teacher Liz Monson. Liz is one of the pioneers in combining Buddhist teachings with nature-based practices, and her work helps us connect in an embodied way to the fundamental interconnectedness of the world. This conversation covers many topics, including: how spirituality and connection to nature fed into her path to Buddhism; nature-based practices in the Buddhist tradition; moving beyond human-centrism; the energies of the natural world; the sandcastle of the constructed self; why human beings are really here; lessons about human nature from 9/11; wisdom from the trees; practices to connect with the elements of nature; working with elemental energies to understand emotions; understanding the divine masculine and feminine archetypes; psychedelics and meditation as complementary pathways toward awakening; an experiential approach to suffering and healing; and the need for self-compassion and love. Rep. Logan Monson talks with Redge Johnson, director of Utah's Public Lands Policy Coordinating Office, about Utah's continued fight to keep public lands in public hands, managed locally. Not from Washington. They break down the differences between Senator Mike Lee's federal public lands proposal and Utah's own plan to create a state-run Department of Land Management. Rep. Monson and Johnson discuss the state's recent lawsuit over unappropriated lands, the Supreme Court's refusal to hear the case, and the impact of federal road closures, monument expansions, and top-down restrictions on rural Utahns. This episode highlights Utah's vision for conservation through access, multiple use, and responsible local stewardship, not fences and red tape.

About Katharine Barnwell: How One Woman Revolutionized Modern MissionsWhat if Mother Teresa or Billy Graham lived and worked — and nobody knew their names? What if one of the church's most influential missionaries went almost unnoticed?Meet Katharine (Katy) Barnwell. Within Bible translation, she's a legend. Outside of Bible translation, few have heard of her. But not even Billy Graham holds a candle to what God did through Katy. From hiding as a child from Nazi bombing raids, fleeing civil wars, and remaining calm under terrorist attacks and armed gunmen, to utterly revolutionizing every field she touched, Barnwell's life proves there is no need to treat the missionary hall of fame as if its ranks are closed. On the contrary, her kingdom labor reveals that God is still in the business of raising up contemporary “greats” who are willing to face danger, go the distance, lift up God's Word in unprecedented ways, and see the lost turn to Christ in droves. In fact, there may be no “great” in all of church history who matches Barnwell's level of influence. All around the world, hundreds of millions of new believers read and hear Scripture in their own language because of Barnwell's work, books, and language training. By some estimates, about 3,000 completed or in-process Bible translations swim directly downstream of her work. Since she rebuilt The Jesus Film Project's methods, more than 300 million viewers around the world have become followers of Jesus. Given such accomplishments, one might expect Barnwell to be arrogant or aloof, and yet those who know her best report sweet surprise at how warm, endearing, patient, and feisty she is.Her African colleagues call her Mama Katy, and such a name is fitting. She is truly the mother of modern Bible translation and the mother of twenty-first-century missions.Purchase a copy of Katharine Barnwell: How One Woman Revolutionized Modern Missions here.Connect with Jordan Monsonwebsite | X | SubstackJordan Monson is the Professor of Missions and Old Testament at Huntington University and the Director of the Center for Faith Integration and Vocation at Huntington University. The economic landscape is shifting beneath our feet, and this episode of Marks on the Markets delivers the clarity you need to navigate what's ahead.Richard Cunningham and John Coleman sits down with Matt Monson, Partner of Public Equity at Sovereign's Capital, to dissect the most pressing issues facing investors today. The conversation begins with Moody's recent downgrade of US creditworthiness and what it signals about America's unsustainable fiscal trajectory—a $36 trillion debt problem that's finally getting the attention it deserves.Market Concentration and Hidden Risks The hosts dive deep into the Magnificent Seven phenomenon, revealing why having 30% of the S&P 500 concentrated in seven companies creates more portfolio risk than most investors realize. Monson shares his framework for analyzing tariff impacts across revenue and supply chains, while Coleman explains why this isn't just about stock picking—it's about understanding correlated risk factors that could catch investors off guard.Tariffs: Beyond the Headlines Moving past the political rhetoric, the discussion explores the real-world impact of trade policy on American businesses. From the company sourcing 100% of its goods from China to the complex web of global supply chains, listeners get an inside look at how tariff uncertainty is forcing businesses to stockpile cash and delay investment decisions. The hosts examine whether the current 90-day pause with China signals a path toward resolution or deeper economic disruption.Middle East Partnerships and AI Infrastructure The episode takes a strategic turn as Coleman and Monson analyze Trump's Middle East tour and the massive foreign direct investment commitments in AI infrastructure. They discuss why these partnerships matter for America's technological competitiveness and how they fit into the broader geopolitical and economic picture.Federal Reserve in an Impossible Position With inflation pressures from tariffs and a still-strong labor market, the Fed faces an unprecedented challenge. The hosts explain why rate cuts seem unlikely despite market volatility, and what this means for mortgage rates, business investment, and the broader economy.Faith-Driven Investing Insights The conversation concludes with practical insights for faith-driven investors, including Monson's compelling math on why your investment balance sheet—often 100 times larger than annual giving—represents an enormous opportunity for kingdom impact. The hosts share how the movement is evolving beyond traditional ESG frameworks toward employee flourishing and cultural excellence.Key Topics Covered:US credit downgrade implications and fiscal sustainabilityMagnificent Seven concentration risks and portfolio diversificationTariff impact analysis and business uncertaintyFederal Reserve policy constraints and rate outlookMiddle East AI partnerships and foreign investmentSmall vs. large cap performance cyclesFaith-driven investing trends and cultural impactThis episode offers both macro-economic analysis and practical investment insights for anyone seeking to understand how current events will shape markets and investment opportunities in the months ahead.

On the night of September 1, 2002, 35-year-old Michael Tardio and 31-year-old Christopher Monson drove to a restaurant on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, preparing to finalize a deal that could change their lives. They were meeting a man known only as Mr. Big to sell $1 million worth of jewelry, which had once belonged to Michael's girlfriend, Playboy Bunny Sandy Bentley. Hours later, a Mercedes SUV was found engulfed in flames in an upscale Studio City neighborhood. Inside, Michael and Chris were both dead—each shot multiple times in the chest. The jewelry was gone, and the fire had erased all forensic evidence. Despite years of investigation, the case remains unsolved, leaving investigators asking: Who was Mr. Big? And what really happened the night Michael and Chris were killed? 35-year-old Michael Tardio and 31-year-old Christopher Monson were last seen on the night of September 1, 2002, driving to a restaurant on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles.
