We're giving Alex and the guys the week off for the first time since restarting the BaT podcast in January 2024. This week, we serve you a reheated and much-better-sounding version of Alex's February 2024 interview with the one-and-only, the legendary, the beloved, Peter Egan—he of Side Glances in Road & Track, of countless harebrained-slash-inspirational road trips, of April Fools road tests, and of so much more. This is the man that so many of us at BaT and beyond like to think we've fashioned ourselves after; a modest and humble writer who, perhaps unknowingly, has played a formative role in our addictions to the great machinery of the world, the call of the open road, and the treasures to be found when these things are combined.Peter sat down with Alex over a year ago in his erstwhile stomping grounds of coastal Orange County, California, to discuss his career and the cars, bikes, planes, people, and places it was formed around. They cover his entry into journalism via Cycle World; the power of an interesting car, or a Piper Cub, to make friends out of strangers in faraway lands; the social advantages of touring the country in someone else's Ferrari; a memorable hometown show with Chuck Berry and Billy Peek, caught on happenstance; getting a glimpse of the Old Man at Fiorano; the art of (somewhat) feigning ignorance; getting locked into the Morgan factory at Malvern; sharing the last Everest flight of the season with Neil Sedaka, and only Neil Sedaka; whether Egan's next project will be a 76-year-old British sports car or a 27-year-old Italian superbike; and how Barb has stuck with him come fire and come rain (yes, Barb really is that great).Links for titles/listings discussed in this episode:The Ex-Peter Egan 1967 Jaguar XKE Coupe that was auctioned in 2019 with 335 comments—including one from the man himself, which gathered quite possibly the most thumbs-up a single comment has ever received on BaTTom Cotter's Cobra storyEgan's archive at the Road & Track website (may require a membership subscription)A variety of Egan's writing collections available for purchase (we highly recommend picking up every last one of them)Got suggestions for our next guest from the BaT community or One Year Garage episode? Like many activists, Peter Egan found his cause by chance. When a labrador named Custard collapsed outside the Downton Abbey actor's house, his wife jumped into action, taking the animal to a vet, and eventually the family adopted the dog. For Egan, this moment opened his eyes to the crisis of surplus pets in the UK, and it served as his initiation into advocating for animal rights. Peter Egan joined host Jay Ruderman to discuss the great number of organizations and animal rights causes he supports, from Saving Suffering Strays, to Animals Asia, to Animal Equality UK. They discuss a campaign to protect stray animals in Turkey that Peter is involved with, the ways that animals care for their well being, and the many ways Peter's personal relationships with animals shape and international activism shape each other. Episode Chapters (00:00) Intro to Peter Egan (01:07) Peter's fight to protect stray animals in Turkey (02:54) How to become involved with  international causes (06:15) Bile extraction from Moon Bears (11:31) Peter says Zoos need to go (15:04) What's the connection between all of Peter's activism? You can watch it by clicking here: https://watch.unchainedtv.com/videos/harambe-the-movie. Erik Crown, the director, is a former TMZ paparazzi who used to photograph and interview celebrities on the fly before reinventing himself and becoming an animal rights filmmaker. Harambe, a critically endangered, silverback gorilla, was shot and killed after a child entered into his enclosure at the Cincinnati Zoo in 2016. The story made international news and Harambe's photo quickly became a viral internet sensation that sparked an important discussion on captivity. Was the gorilla actually trying to protect the child when the primate was shot? Let's dive deep and find out with the team that made this award-winning film. Featuring Downton Abbey star Peter Egan, this movie has been hailed as the next Blackfish, revealing the dark underbelly of zoos. “The killing of Harambe was murder,” says Captain Paul Watson, star of Whale Wars and founding member of Greenpeace and Sea Shepherd. Delighted to welcome Actor, Animal Rights Activist Peter Egan to The Good Listening To Show 'Clearing'.  Fresh off a plane from Vietnam, Peter is here to recount his poignant experiences of just having returned from a Bear Sanctuary managed by his beloved charity, Animals Asia. A life long and passionate Animals advocate & vegan, Peter very movingly highlights the tragic reality of Moon Bears trapped in crush-cages with a life of despair in the Bile Farms of Vietnam, and the commendable efforts by Animals Asia to give these beautiful creatures a second chance at life in a Sanctuary at last.A pleasure & a priviledge to curate him through the journey of the show, the conversation then takes a very Shakespearean scenic detour, as we wander along together through his 'Clearing' of a serene woodland retreat, accompanied by his four loyal canine companions. We then venture into the shared world of our love of acting, mentioning greats such as John Gielgud, Laurence Olivier & Peter O'Toole, along with Peter O'Toole's mentor, Director Nat Brenner. We also get a 'sneak-peek' into his latest TV project, "True Love", and the bond he shares with Daniel Day-Lewis, a fellow alumni of mine at the prestigious Bristol Old Vic Theatre School with a conversation about Acting Teacher Legend Rudi Shelley too.My conversation with Peter then takes a deeply personal turn as he opens up about his greatest love of his life, his late wife, Myra. Listen in as he movingly reflects on her courageous battle with cancer and her brave decision to take control of her treatment. We then delve once again into Peter's unwavering commitment to animal welfare and how he's embraced a vegan lifestyle too. From his rebellious student days to his successful acting career, and his undying passion for animal rights, prepare to be inspired by Peter's extraordinary journey and how he's leveraging his platform for change and for the welfare of all.Tune in next week for more stories of 'Distinction & Genius' from The Good Listening To Show 'Clearing'. For a generation of motorcycle enthusiasts, Peter Egan represented something of a revelation. Here was someone who spoke their language, who found ways to escape the chill of winter to bring them with him across the country, eloquently describing  through the pages of Cycle World the flat expanses, curving mountain roads, and scenic coastlines he traveled, often with his wife, Barbara.Egan's writing first appeared in Cycle World in 1977, and he was a regular fixture in the publication for decades. For the foreword of “Leanings 2,” the second compilation of Egan's feature stories and slice-of-life columns, longtime Editor-in-Chief David Edwards described his friend and riding buddy as “the perfect writer” for CW, adding, “Peter's love of motorcycling is deep and non-denominational.”Peter has documented many of his road trips, including detailed accounts of the failings of the vehicles, interactions with the people with whom he traveled, and the characters and weather he encountered along the way. Peter and Barb still live in Wisconsin, near Madison, and we are grateful that he has agreed to join us on this episode of “Driven To Ride” to share some of his lifetime of experiences.Peter Egan's Cycle World ArticlesPeter Egan's BooksAll our links: https://linktr.ee/driventoridepodcastBusiness Inquiries: hello@driventoridepodcast.com Connect with Us:Website: www.driventoridepodcast.comInstagram: www.Instagram.com/driventoridepodcastFacebook: www.facebook.com/driventorideEmail:hello@driventoridepodcast.com

The charity provides quality veterinary care, refuge, rehabilitation, adoption schemes, as well as conducting sterilisation, education and rabies control outreach programs. Set up a decade ago Animal SOS Sri Lanka is now looking after an astonishing 2000 animals, and prides itself on giving animals a second chance of a healthy and fulfilling life. Charlie spoke with Kim shortly before the opening of an event at Art gallery NoHo Studios where paintings donated by three artists were to be sold and money donated to both Aimal SOS Sri Lanka and the middle-east based charity Safe Haven for Donkeys. At that event, he also took the opportunity to speak with two of Animal SOS Sri Lanka's Patrons for a shortcast we've also published  - the actor and animal advocate Peter Egan and broadcaster and presenter Jan Leeming, both of whom are well-known for their commitment to animals and animal welfare charities.  Back to the interview and before Kim explains what drives her work, Charlie asked her to give an outline of the charity that has consumed her life for so long...Animal SOS Sri Lanka website Animal SOS Sri Lanka Facebook and Twitter feedsJustGiving page for Animal SOS Sri Lanka

‘Shortcasts' are short standalone audio comments and statements from conservationists, campaigners, charities, authors and members of our audience. If it needs to be said – say it here!Rescue the Animal Rescuers: Ricky Gervais, Dame Judi Dench and Peter Egan join calls for Boris Johnson and the Government to rescue animal rescuers from the Taliban As the Taliban closes in on Kabul and an emergency evacuation begins before the city falls, an urgent campaign "Rescue the Animal Rescuers" has been established to call on the Prime Minister and British Government to include on the British Rescue list, vets, vet nurses, animal care staff and their immediate family members, who are working for two British animal welfare charities in Kabul, Nowzad and the Mayhew. Both these charities have worked for over a decade in Afghanistan in the most dangerous of conditions to vaccinate and neuter street dogs, put in place rabies control programmes, care for working animals and rehome rescue dogs and cats in Britain and around the world. They have invested millions of pounds from British donors to set up veterinary clinics and animal care centres and to train a new generation of Afghan men and women to become qualified vets and vet nurses, which has led to a significant improvement in animal welfare in Afghanistan. However, with American and Nato forces withdrawing from Afghanistan and the Taliban about to regain control of the country, this work can no longer continue and the dedicated animal rescuers of Afghanistan are now to be left at the mercy of the Taliban.  Many of the young women working as vets and vet nurses  face forced marriage to Taliban leaders under the threat of rape or death and many of the men could also face deadly reprisals from the Taliban, particularly for assisting Nato forces and contractors in caring for their military and security dogs. Britain is desperately short of qualified vets and vet nurses and all the veterinary care teams that work for Nowzad and the Mayhew could quickly find employment in veterinary surgeries in Britain if they were rescued from Kabul.Ricky Gervais comedian actor, director and producer said :"Pen Farthing and his team Nowzad have done amazing work for over a decade in Kabul, they have saved thousands of dogs and provided work for the local community and instigated educational programmes which have benefited their community. Their lives are now in danger. They need our help now." Actor and animal welfare campaigner Peter Egan said : "I visited Pen Farthing and Nowzad in Kabul in 2013. I was so impressed by the inspiring work he and his team were doing that I became their patron/ambassador. Working in a war zone has always made extraordinary demands on this wonderful charity..demands that were met by Pen and his team.  Now that the Taliban will certainly overrun Kabul in the next few days his life and the lives of all of his team are in danger. they need our help..we must not ignore them in their hour of need. We must get Pen...his team and his animals to safety...it is not impossible to achieve, it just takes commitment. The same support is needed for The Mayhew and their staff. Let's get this done."For more details on the work of Nowzad see https://www.nowzad.comDonate to Nowzad For more details on the work of the Mayhew see https://themayhew.org/For media contact campaign: Dominic Dyer on 07876 596233 or dominicdyer@aol.com

Peter Egan - Writer and Columnist for Road and Track and Cycle World Magazines Everyone has a hero of some kind.  Someone they look up to or admire.  Someone that inspires them.  For me, that someone is the great writer, Peter Egan.  You see, Peter has the uncanny knack for putting into the written words the feelings and thoughts that drivers of great cars and riders of beautiful motorcycles have as they progress through their journeys.  To express thoughts and emotion as Peter does is a characteristic that is rare in any writer, let alone an automotive journalist. Taking this a step further, it was Peter's writing that inspired me to write my first book, The BOLD Business Book.  He will inspire you as well. Listen as Peter explains his journey of decades to become a renowned and prolific writer in the world of pistons, tires and oil.  He went from being broke and broke down on a motorcycle cross country trip to inspiring thousands with his writing.  Lucky breaks or the universe doing all of us a favor, whatever happened, we are all very fortunate to be able to read the writings of Peter Egan. As you might have gathered, my two favourite things are dogs and films. (Jaffa cakes (the posh ones) close third.) So, I was very delighted to talk to to the very talented Dominic and Ian Higgins. Do check out their spectacular back catalogue - they run Pixel Revolution Films and they are attracting lot of attention at international film festivals - a cutting edge mix of reality and art. This was recorded on the day of the premiere of their new animated short film Of Wolves and Men.  You will love it, I promise you. And lovely Peter Egan did the voice over. Their next film will be Fleur, the beautiful little collie cross who has graced our magazine covers twice - a doggie Kate Moss. She had been very badly mutilated in Romania. Gov-sponsored canine genocide had seen the streets cleared of dogs and them being 'spayed' by people who definitely weren't vets. Fleur hadn't been properly stitched back up and her insides were falling out when the photos did the rounds on Facebook. It's an epic story of a dog refusing to die and never giving up trust in humans despite barbaric treatment. Well guess what, we helped Wendy and Andrew get Fleur's story published as a book. And guess who saw the front cover on Amazon and fell in love.... well only the Higgins' brothers from Pixel Revolution! Here's a link to Of Wolves and Men....https://youtu.be/DieDRSneYmE

Peter Egan is a man who started his working life as an accountancy clerk, switched to the practical and trained as a butcher and subsequently became general manager of his family’s butchershops in Gisborne. He moved on to larger roles in the meat industry, served on the national industry association executive and then drove the development of a mutton export business beforeembarking on the establishment of a sophisticated boneless meat processing operation to prepare pot roast product taking lamb from the farm to the United Kingdom customer as a packaged item. His work and standing in the industry saw him appointed as chair of Freesia Investments to focus on a restructure of a major portion of the New Zealand meat industry. An influencer and force for change in the sector he was awarded the 1990 Commemoration Medal for Services to New Zealand. He subsequently became an Officer of the New Zealand Order ofMerit. In 1993 our guest started a meat processing and exporting organization, Greenlea Premier Meats, and as chairman he drove that from concept to arguably the most efficient meat processingoperation in the country. In terms of vision, utilization and yield it sets the highest industry standards. Where others in the business cry “difficult” the Egan management team guided by hisphilosophy find opportunity. Peter has served as a director on numerous boards and that includes those outside the industry he has made his life in. He has served as a director of NZ Rail and deputy chair of the State Owned Landcorp, our biggest national farm enterprise. Actually it is outside the primary industry that this man has made his mark as someone special. He has worked for charities, mentored youth and set the benchmark for the term “corporate socialresponsibility”. He personally picked up responsibility for the rebuild of the Hamilton Cathedral and managed that project in a way the church described as “tough minded but compassionate”.

Actor and TV Presenter Celebrating. Informing. Changing lives. The Kennel Club’s National Puppy Awareness Week (PAW) is a celebration of the joy that puppies bring to our lives and aims to give potential puppy owners the information they need to ensure that the relationship they have with their new family member is a happy and fulfilling one. Puppy farming is the mass commercial production of puppies purely for profit and without any thought for the health, welfare, or happiness of either the pup or breeding dogs. Kept in horrific conditions, then sent long distances cross country and sold en masse - usually poorly and riddled with painful disease - to pet shops, websites, and private dealers; these puppies often die within days of arriving in their new home. According to a recent Dogs Trust survey, 95% of dog owners say they wouldn't buy a dog from a puppy farm yet as many as 900,000 people may have done so without even knowing. TV Vet Marc Abraham says: 'Most dog owners say they'd never buy a dog from a puppy farm, yet a large number will due to common scams especially by private dealers. This is exactly why Pup Aid have launched this e-petition. We need 100,000 signatures from the nation's animal lovers to make the Government listen and hopefully end this needless and preventable suffering for good.' 'The Government must ban the sale of young puppies and kittens unless their mothers are present; as an absent mother is a clear compromise of both health and welfare for these animals and often a big clue indicating puppy farming.' Pup Aid believes prospective puppy and kitten owners should always: Ask "Where's Mum?" Insist on seeing the puppy/kitten and mother interacting Be aware of scams e.g. fake or no mother present at all Pup Aid aims to educate and raise awareness about the cruel trade of puppy and kitten farming helping the British public to only buy from reputable and honourable breeders e.g. Kennel Club Assured Breeders, or consider adopting a dog from a local rescue centre. Pup Aid hope their campaign and e-petition will curb the demand and supply for farmed puppies and kittens and help tackle the horrific practice of puppy and kitten farming in the UK.
