Do to the upcoming new season of Netflix's The Umbrella Academy, we've decided to talk about season 1. Listen to us talk about the amazing world that was created based on Dark Horse Comics The Umbrella Academy. **SPOILERS AHEAD**
Umbrella Academy is what would happen if the main plot of X-Men required that all the superheroes had daddy issues. Oh, and Professor X is a total dick. What I really like about this one is that this has the seriousness of a show like Stranger Things, but still that light-hearted feel of a Marvel Movie - you feel impending doom, but get some laughs along the way. The acting is really really good.Ellen Page and Tom Hopper kill it, but the rest of the cast, while unknown, really move the story forward. The writing and story building will bring you in from the start and give you a sense for the logic of this world. The constant daddy issues get so old, really quickly, but the writers finally figured out that no one cares by Episode 3. Thank goodness. Watch now. Most American audiences haven't seen the British show SKINS, but this show reminds me of a lot of that. Teenage drama, with heaviness. Big disclaimer here, the show is in Spanish. Get over it and give this a try, that's what English subtitles are for. Or, go take a Spanish class. It'll be worth it, I promise.Elite is a teen thriller, drama, comedy, love story; it's in Spanish though. Elite follows a group of kids who all go elite school where the kids are all pretty wealthy, but one day three students transfer into the school. Turns out their old school collapsed in a freak construction accident.Elite tackles some serious issues, including same-sex relationships, how people of color are treated in society and how the adults in our lives react to religious and cultural differences. Don't expect to sit down and lightheartedly watch the show while cooking. The class divide between the rich and poor students drives the plot. The drama of the show is addicting, and it's hard to stop watching. I literally, binged this entire show in one night. It is 8 hours of television that you're watching. Not a brilliant decision if it's a Sunday night, but poor choices must sometimes be made.Oh, did I mention there was a murder? And that's what makes this show brilliant, you don't have to actually care about the brutal murder to love the show (trust me, you will). The relationships alone will drive the story forward. The story would work just fine. But, the murder makes for some pretty foreboding flashbacks and flash-forwards. Watch this now.

Okay, Jabber fans...what to say. This is definitely the end of an era, but this is not the end of the podcast. We hope everyone who enjoys this content follows the show to its new home at The MacGuffin (Macguff.in) and we look forward to opportunities that await us there. Stay tuned, stay subscribed, and we will announce when the transition has been made. In this episode we compare our rankings of the last 13 years of Oscars, Keith gives us his thoughts on Netflix's "The Umbrella Academy" series, Cassidy talks about finally seeing the batshit crazy revenge film "Mandy" at a midnight screening, and we review Robert Rodriguez and James Cameron's sci-fi action film "Alita: Battle Angel." At the end of the show, we review 2016's "Edge of Seventeen" for our Netflix Homework.
This week on the podcast TV With My Mom, I have a real world Russian Doll moment and convince myself we've already talked about that Netflix show so instead we talk about a different Netflix show, The Umbrella Academy. It's a classic TV With My Mom recap episode where Mom tries to remember all of the characters numbers and powers. Spoiler alert: she has a hard time. No real spoilers for the show, just the first episode. Enjoy!
