Latter-day Saints revere Joseph Smith as a prophet of God. His role is absolutely central to the claims of Mormonism. LDS Church President Joseph Fielding Smith highlighted this important role:“Mormonism, as it is called, must stand or fall on the story of Joseph Smith. He was either a prophet of God, divinely called, properly appointed and commissioned, or he was one of the biggest frauds this world has ever seen. There is no middle ground.” (Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation 1:188. Italics in original)In light of this, it makes sense to examine the story of Joseph Smith to evaluate what we should think of him. Consider five elements of his story that bear upon this question.Occult Treasure Hunting Money digging was a fairly common practice in frontier America in the late 1700s and early 1800s. It involved certain rituals or ceremonies performed to obtain buried treasure. The treasure was thought to be guarded by evil spirits. Joseph Smith as a young man offered his services for hire as a money digger. Smith's entire family practiced various folk-magic practices, including visions, dreams and occult rituals.Joseph's method in finding lost treasure involved the use of a seer stone, which he discovered in 1822 while digging a well for a neighbor. He would place this small rock in his hat and pull his hat up over his face to block out the light. He claimed that he could see supernaturally through the stone to help locate the place where the treasure was buried.The Vagrant Act, a New York law at the time, defined a disorderly person to include one who pretended to have skill in palm reading, telling fortunes, or discovering where lost goods could be found. In 1826 - during the period while Joseph was supposedly being prepared by God to receive the gold plates containing the Book of Mormon - he was arrested, brought before a judge, and charged with being a “glass-looker” and a disorderly person. The judge determined that Joseph was guilty, though no penalty was administered.Shortly after this, Joseph stopped money digging but kept the seer stone. It was with this stone that he claimed to find the gold plates and to later produce the Book of Mormon. Historians have documented many points of connection between Joseph's early occult practices and the origins of the Book of Mormon.The First Vision Joseph Smith's “First Vision” is a key part of the LDS story and establishes several unique LDS beliefs. The official account of this vision describes how the 14-year-old Smith, eager to learn the truth about which of the competing Christian churches was true, went to a secluded grove to ask God. There God the Father and Jesus Christ appeared to him and told him not to join any of them, for all of them were apostate. That event launched the prophetic mission of Joseph Smith to restore Jesus' original church to the earth. The official account, now included in LDS scriptures, was written by Joseph Smith in 1838, 18 years after the events it recounts. Yet historical research in recent years has uncovered eight other accounts of the First Vision. Some were written by Smith himself, or were recorded by others who heard Smith tell about it. Most of these accounts are earlier than the official version. It appears that over time, the story changed and grew into its final form. In some versions, two personages appear to Smith. In another, only “the Lord” appears. In others, the glorious personage is an angel. In the official version, the personages tell Smith that all churches are corrupt. In another version, this message comes from an angel. In other versions, this message is missing. In some versions, In one version, Smith reports that he was told, “Your sins are forgiven.” But this is absent in other versions. The official account says that Joseph was 14 when he had the vision. Another version, in Smith's own handwriting, says that he was 15. Others give his age as 17. The LDS Church's Gospel Topics Essay: First Vision AccountsThe Kirtland Banking ScandalThe LDS Church was officially founded in 1830 in New York, near Joseph Smith's home town. By the early 1830s Smith and his followers moved to Kirtland Ohio, where a number of converts had joined the church. New converts from other areas converged on Kirtland to be part of the LDS community. But the church's presence in Ohio didn't last long.There was friction with the locals on a number of points, which led to persecution. But one significant issue emerged when Joseph Smith and other LDS leaders organized an illegal bank in 1836, called the Kirtland Safety Society. Smith not only broke the law to form the bank; he had no expertise in financial matters and hid behind his prophetic mantle to convince others to fund the bank, claiming that the audible voice of God instructed him to establish it. He prophesied that the bank would grow and flourish, surviving when others failed. Yet this bank failed in 1837, releasing a hornet's nest of creditors who demanded payment, leading to numerous lawsuits and threats of violence. Many in the LDS church at that time lost faith in Smith's prophetic leadership. Others were convinced that Smith intended to defraud investors from the beginning. Joseph left Kirtland in January 1838 under cover of darkness, never to return again. FreemasonryFreemasonry was prevalent in the areas where Joseph Smith grew up. In fact, Joseph's brother Hyrum became a Mason while the family was still living in Palmyra, New York. Some years later, in Nauvoo, Illinois, when the LDS church was at its height, many prominent Latter-day Saints were Masons. Joseph became a Mason in March 1842. Less than two months later, he introduced the core ritual of the LDS temple, the endowment ceremony. Numerous scholars have pointed out the many parallels between the Masonic ritual and the LDS temple ritual, such as: the language of the ritual; the handshakes and other physical signs; the oaths and promises made; the vows of secrecy; the clothing involved in the ceremonies; the presentation of the ritual through drama, and more. Masonic themes and symbols are also reflected in the architecture of the Nauvoo temple, such as the beehive; the sun, moon and stars; the square; and the all-seeing eye. The LDS temple ritual, said by Mormons to have been given by divine revelation, is actually based on Masonic rituals.PolygamyPlural marriage in Mormonism began with Joseph Smith. He was toying with the principle of polygamy as early as 1831, and began introducing the doctrine shortly thereafter, but the revelation outlining the practice was not written down until 1843. Around 1834, Smith had a sexual relationship with Fanny Alger, a teenager living in his home. Faithful LDS scholars view this as the first of his plural marriages, but early LDS leader Oliver Cowdery described it as a “dirty, nasty, filthy affair.” By 1842, Joseph had married 10 women. That summer, he married six additional women, along with 17 others in 1843. Two of these were only 14 years old. While Mormons have denied it for years, the LDS Church has acknowledged that many of these marriages were physically consummated.The revelation authorizing plural marriage is found in Doctrine and Covenants 132. There, Joseph's wife Emma is threatened with destruction if she does not go along with Joseph's polygamy. (Today, most people would view that as spiritual abuse.) Section 132 also requires plural wives to be virgins. Yet Joseph married a number of women who were already married to other men. The revelation required a man taking plural wives to obtain the permission of his first wife. Yet Joseph married many women without Emma's knowledge. They even spoke up for Gaza. Recently they were not saying much of consequence but Andrew did condemn bombing a girls school in Iran. It was like a little spark of how he used to be. That does not mean they did not screw up in the past with other things. Doesn't mean they did either. You cannot allow the bias of liking or hating their messages determine the truth of what they may have done.The BadAfter laying low and being 5 months away from finally getting a trial on a false accuser they are back in jail. Either they thought wrongly that they could not be extradited or naively thought Trump would not turn of them.The UglyThe sheer volume of accusations out of the UK even if every one of them is false is going to take many years of litigation. They are looking at life in jail with periodic court appearances. And sadly, in the case of Andrew at least, it looks like he did use either a barely of age or possibly underage worker in his early webcam business. Which one it was will decide everything. Were they attacked for political reasons? 100% yes. Does that mean both are innocent? No. A court will decide that. Right now they don't even know who their accusers are. But I would go on a limb and say all of them were employees of the webcam business. I think they are cooked. It is the end of a era. As this thing is being litigated people will just stop talking about them and there will hardly be a mention until the results come in and then they will be forgotten again. They were by all account to people actually near them friendly guys, generous and fun. But there could be skeletons in their closet, mistakes from their youth. Or it could all be BS. Regardless guilty or innocent, once they are in the UK it is over. It is a lopsided world that this gets so much focus over federal governments in the US redacting files to protect serial pedophiles. And the UK dragging its feet to prosecute and jail grooming gangs. Update: Excepts from the New YorkerI will assume that she meant she went there to live, but had been there before to visit. Otherwise she could not have made a video in the UK in 2012. I misspoke by assuming that I should not have and so did the writer on the New Yorker. The 2012 video does not matter because there is no sex, there is no nudity either. It's just spanking with a belt, with garments on both people. Weird? Yes. Sketchy? Yes.But illegal? No. The 2014 video which is the earliest date (and may have been 2015) there is sex. However by then Bibian is of age. Andrew has the arm tattoo making it late 2014 or after because he got that in Thailand. He does not have it in his kickboxing matches from the years before. Now here is the issue. IF that was 2015 then she could be 18 and everything is legal. However IF it was in 2014 then although she was old enough to have consensual sex, there is a law against creating pornography in the UK until a person is 18. We are talking a matter of months that are the difference between 10 years in jail or nothing. (Normally the person appearing nude must be harmed in some way by it for there to be charges but it's the UK and they hate him, so that wont come into consideration). Court will have to tell. Trial by law, not the media, is how all of this should have played out. And it is super clear that the only reason the UK gives a damn about any of these events from a dozen years ago is because of the political things the Tates said. Andrew Tate is right about the war on Masculinity. He got all of that s**t right. He was a net positive, when he got out of the web-camming industry. Far more than the basic normalcy we see in Hollywood and the music industry of sexual exploitation with no upside. Let him face up to whatever he actually did. It is highly suspicious though given all these false accusations. False accusers or police/DIICOT manipulating people into false narratives should all also be punished too. And it is possible all are guilty. I can say met both guys and they were super polite and well adjusted. I can imagine them doing the things they have been accused of doing. It is more of a case of lie down with dogs wake up with fleas in my opinion. And when they were poor they did whatever to get ahead. I just think a fair trial is impossible at this point. Given the palpable rage that people have for both Tates especially Andrew and that includes the Establishment, I do not see how they can get a trial by jury at all or an impartial judge.    Authorities have finally found the crazy dude that shot up a bunch of cars on I-70 the first night of the World Cup in KC.  He's dead and apparantly was dead in a house they previously combed over.  But it gets worse.  It seems at least one police department wasn't interested in looking for him BEFORE the shootings as they were too busy working World Cup events.   Senator John Thune has ordered a 19 day vacation for the US Senate, right after Trump went too see them on Capitol Hill imploring them to pass the SAVE America Act.  This is so embarrassing.    The Netherlands fans are taking over KC Thursday and they seem nice enough.  But let's remember they are not American.... When was the last time you felt free to be creative? To just let loose and tap into your creativity in an inviting and supportive space? I was thinking about these points when I took in the Something Sketchy – Bad Drawing Only event in January.  This gathering comes from the wonderful mind of Jaymie Raefta, a Saskatoon illustrator and artist who has become one of my favourite people in the past few years.  Once every few months in a warehouse space in Riversdale, Jaymie hosts a gathering of people who love to draw, no matter their ability, and encourages them to draw badly. Very badly.  Jaymie, who uses they/them pronouns, emcees the evening. They embrace the role with the vigor and charm of a late-night television talk show host. Jaymie's quick wit and humour, along with quirky musical selections, create the perfect vibe for people to draw.  The drawing comes from specific prompts which Jaymie comes up with. My favourite was the following: draw your favourite co-worker as a cold baked potato.  You have two minutes to complete your drawing, and at the end of each round, the table votes on the best bad drawing.  What I love about these Something Sketchy nights is the creative community they are forming in Saskatoon. The room was packed with more than 30 people who giggled and laughed throughout the night while making new friends and reconnecting with old ones. The people came from all walks of life: artists, graphic designers, potters, and even a mailman. You will hear from these people how much it means to them to have a devoted set time and space to be creative in this episode, and you will hear why these Something Sketchy nights mean so much to Jaymie.  This has been an amazing season of YXE Underground, and I am so thrilled to end it with such a fun and meaningful episode.  If you want to learn more about the Something Sketchy – Bad Drawing events, look up Plastic Salad on Instagram. Today's Headlines: A fatal collision at LaGuardia killed both pilots of an Air Canada flight after a fire truck crossed the runway and hit the plane on landing. Nine passengers remain hospitalized. The NTSB is investigating, but context matters: the tower was understaffed, TSA agents are six weeks without pay, hundreds have quit, and half the nation's busiest airports had more than a third of agents call out Saturday. Trump blocked a bipartisan fix because he won't sign anything without his unrelated voter restriction bill, and deployed ICE agents to airports instead. Newark's tower was also evacuated Monday.  On day 24 of the Iran war, Trump announced he was postponing threatened strikes on Iranian power plants, citing "very good conversations" — which Iran immediately said never happened. More notable: oil futures spiked unusually about 15 minutes before Trump posted the announcement. Iran said the war continues until it receives full compensation. How can we call something a “doctrine” or a rule if we don't have a clear rule statement to cite to? (Hint: You can't).
