John welcomes writer, director and playwright Leslye Headland (The Acolyte, Russian Doll) to ask, why are stage plays so challenging for screenwriters? Using her recent Broadway play Cult of Love, they look at different approaches to scene description, heightened and simultaneous dialogue, and strategies for adapting stage plays to film. We also chart Leslye's career from theater kid to auteur filmmaker, her approach to time loops (because how could we not?), and answer listener questions about music cues and long scripts. In our bonus segment for premium members, John and Leslye compare notes on how to keep up with what's on stage, and what to do if you missed a production. On today's episode of "Musicians that should be a household name" we're talking about Harry Nilsson!!! Sure, he was talked about plenty in his day, but what if I were to tell you that "One is the loneliest number", "Put the lime in the coconut", and the "Gotta get up" song from the show Russian Doll were all from the same dude! Would you talk about him then?? Nilsson was a songwriter's songwriter and you'll have to listen to this episode to find out why. Aaaaannd, today we have on another member of the 200 podcast episodes club, with George Heftler of the recently defunct "Best Little Horror Pod In Philly", in which every episode for 200 episodes, he (and his famous guests) tried to determine what the best horror movie ever made was. CAREER-VIEW MIRROR - biographies of colleagues in the automotive and mobility industries.

Ten years ago, almost to the day, I landed back in the UK from New Zealand. Looking back, it's easy to simplify things with hindsight, but that moment marked the start of a significant transformation for me. I had begun the process of self-actualization.As Daniel Pink articulated in Drive, we're driven by autonomy, mastery, and meaningful work. For me, those drivers align perfectly with the BIGR framework: belief, intentionality, a growth mindset, and repetition. That's what has helped me grow—and that's what I believe can help you grow too.To become your best self, to self-actualize and fill out your biggest Russian doll, you need to get "BIGR": Belief, Intentionality, Growth Mindset, and Repetition.Last week, in Part 1, I introduced the concept of growing into your biggest Russian doll—of becoming the fullest version of yourself—and teased that I'd explain the name B.I.G. Iain. In this episode, Part 2, we dive deeper into what it takes to grow BIGR and what the name BIG Iain represents. About AndyI'm an experienced business leader and a passionate developer of people in the automotive finance industry, internationally.During over twenty five years, I have played a key role in developing businesses including Alphabet UK, BMW Corporate Finance UK, BMW Financial Services Singapore, BMW Financial Services New Zealand and Tesla Financial Services UK.At the same time, I have coached individuals and delivered leadership development programmes in 17 countries across Asia, Europe and North America.I started Aquilae in 2016 to enable “Fulfilling Performance” in the mobility industry, internationally.Learn more about Fulfilling PerformanceCheck out Release the handbrake! CAREER-VIEW MIRROR - biographies of colleagues in the automotive and mobility industries.

Back in 2006, I accepted a role within BMW Group that required moving my family from the UK to Singapore. My wife and I have two children who at the time, were aged 10 and 6.In the weeks leading up to our move, I often found myself explaining the decision to colleagues: I'd say, “I felt I needed to get out of my comfort zone.”Fast forward to early 2007, and there I was in my new office in Singapore, surrounded by unfamiliar faces, trying to figure out how things worked—and feeling very uncomfortable. I remember thinking, “This is what they mean by a comfort zone!”Around the same time, I was reminded of something I'd learned on a management training program in South Africa: “Your responsibility as a manager is to produce results and grow the people.”In Episode 197, I shared why growing people matters so much. Today, I want to build on that by introducing a metaphor for growth—one that has shaped my thinking ever since. And next week, I'll explore how we can use this metaphor to grow ourselves and those we lead and care about.About AndyI'm an experienced business leader and a passionate developer of people in the automotive finance industry, internationally.During over twenty five years, I have played a key role in developing businesses including Alphabet UK, BMW Corporate Finance UK, BMW Financial Services Singapore, BMW Financial Services New Zealand and Tesla Financial Services UK.At the same time, I have coached individuals and delivered leadership development programmes in 17 countries across Asia, Europe and North America.I started Aquilae in 2016 to enable “Fulfilling Performance” in the mobility industry, internationally.Learn more about Fulfilling PerformanceCheck out Release the handbrake! [Encore episode] Russian Doll co-creator Leslye Headland joins Kate and Franklin for a wide, thoughtful take on all the things that excite her about movies and storytelling (Headland is also a playwright). She reflects on the origins of her love of film, including the many things her parents let her stay up to watch, or actors and movies they introduced her to. On the Kubrick film that inspired her to become a filmaker, she says: "I watched it almost every day. I just couldn't get enough of it. ...And I just thought, somehow I'm going to do this. Somehow I'm going to make this happen for myself. I don't know how but I'm going to do it." Plus: what it was like writing for the quirky FX drama Terriers, challenging the overwhelming white maleness of the cinematic canon (think: The Graduate, Taxi Driver) and so much more. Questions? Creating the galaxy of The Acolyte: DP Chris Teague

The Disney+ series The Acolyte continues the saga of the Star Wars universe with a crime thriller. A former Jedi Padawan, Osha, reunites with her Jedi Master, Sol, to investigate a murder spree against their fellow Jedis. They uncover secrets from Osha's past and must fight the dark sides of the Force. Cinematographer Chris Teague has crafted stunning visuals for a variety of projects, from indie dramas like Obvious Child to critically acclaimed series like Russian Doll, GLOW, and Only Murders in the Building. He feels his style is constantly evolving. For the Star Wars series The Acolyte, Chris worked with saturated colors and key lighting, as though the illumination in many scenes was from a single source. He wanted to immerse viewers in the world of the series, without calling attention to the cinematography. When approaching a project, Chris delves into the script and references, often discovering new insights along the way. “As you're reading a script, as you're looking at references, you have these little epiphanies, these little discoveries, but they're always sort of partial discoveries,” Chris says. “And then hopefully, they evolve into something that's specific to the project itself. The joy of filmmaking is to collaborate and combine all the creativity into something that feels cohesive.” He believes that these discoveries gradually evolve into a style specific to the project. As the lead DP, Chris established the look of the show over 6 months of prep. He split the episodes with fellow cinematographer James Friend, and they tested cameras and lenses together. Friend's episodes took place in different locations so he was able to establish his own look for his episodes. For The Acolyte, Chris worked closely with the production designer to create sets that were both practical and visually stunning, with multiple angles for the camera to explore. He and showrunner/director Leslye Headland also embraced the challenge of shooting in real locations, selling the scale of the Star Wars universe without relying heavily on blue screen. They did not use a volume stage at all, wanting it to look as close to what director George Lucas would do, with a visual style that was powerful but not overbearing. Several of the scenes in episodes four and five were filmed on location in Madeira, an island off the coast of Africa. Madeira offered lots of wild beauty, with incredible views from craggy bluffs. They did face some weather challenges while shooting there, with sweeps of fog and cloud that rolled into a full whiteout at times. Beyond the visuals, Chris also focused on capturing the intricate stunt choreography and fight sequences in a way that would keep the audience engaged. His attention to detail ensured that these action-packed moments felt both exciting and integral to the storytelling. As a Star Wars fan, Chris was excited to be involved in The Acolyte. He says of the experience, “I can't believe I'm in this room right now watching this happen. It really feels like you're part of this creative process that people are going to fall in love with.” Find Chris Teague: http://www.teaguefilmworks.com/home Instagram: @_christeague Listen to our previous interview with Chris Teague on Only Murders in the Building. https://www.camnoir.com/ep174/ Sponsored by Hot Rod Cameras www.hotrodcameras.com The Cinematography Podcast website: www.camnoir.com Facebook: @cinepod Instagram: @thecinepod Twitter: @ShortEndz

Two sisters on opposite sides of the Force; one terrible trauma that sent them on those divergent paths... Set one hundred years before the Skywalker Saga that would define a galaxy, The Acolyte – Disney's newest Star Wars TV show – explores uncharted territory for the franchise in more ways than one. Not only have fans  never seen this era in Star Wars lore explored on-screen before; it's also a departure in just explicitly it explores the idea that the Jedi as an institution might be corruptible and flawed. Harry Nilsson was a man in a hurry. There's no time, people! Life is happening now, and if you don't act fast and grab it, you'll be outta luck. Dead at 52, the former Wunderkind, one of Rock's most innovative song stylists, exited this earthly realm, having burned out his candle from both ends - in terms of life, work, and alcohol consumption - but, thankfully, he left behind a clutch of living monuments to his originality. This song started life as a B-side to the magisterial Without You, whose soaring vocal allegedly caused Harry to burst a hemorrhoid. He never did anything half-way. And, almost 40 years later, it re-emerged as the musical fulcrum for Natasha Lyonne's zany existential Netflix series Russian Doll, causing a reported 3,300 percent jump in Spotify streams. It seems you can't keep a good song down, and every time Lyonne's character re-awakens, Harry's ear worm reanimates, winding her back up - a bobbing apple in the enigmatic tub of time. So, you got something to do? Do it now; don't hesitate! Make that phone call; say what you need to say. Tempus Fugit!

Bing Crosby recorded the biggest-selling single of all time, ‘White Christmas', on 29th May, 1942. The session took just 18 minutes, and the song was not considered the standout from the album: everyone thought the Valentine's-themed ballad ‘Be Careful, It's My Heart' had a better chance of chart success. The songwriter, Irving Berlin, was perhaps not an obvious person to pen the quintessential American Christmas song, given that he was a Russian-born Jew, who had never celebrated the holiday until his arrival in the United States. But the record's airplay on US Army overseas radio stations during World War II struck a chord with homesick soldiers, and helped embed the tune deeply into the American psyche. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly reveal why the version you're almost certainly thinking of is NOT the version with which Bing initally topped the charts; unpick the confusing Russian Doll stack of genres into which the song has been repurposed; and explain why Berlin's Oscar win became a pivotal moment in the Academy Awards ceremony…  Further Reading: • ‘'White Christmas' at 75: A Snapshot of the Most Successful Song In Music History' (Billboard, 2017): https://www.billboard.com/culture/lifestyle/white-christmas-bing-crosby-history-8071111/#! • ‘Is White Christmas the Best Popular Song Ever Written?' Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for information about all your favorite fictional Universes. Milly Alcock will show us her superhero landing when Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow premieres on June 26, 2026. Other than Sasha Calle's portrayal in The Flash, this means we'll see Superman's cousin Kara Zor-El on the big screen for the first time since 1984. The film will be released just a year after we see James Gunn's vision for the man of steel himself.  In a move that seems telling of the new direction of MCU, the Marvel Television banner has been reintroduced and will be used for live action series such as Daredevil: Born Again, Agatha All Along, and Ironheart. The banner was previously used for MCU-adjacent shows Agents of SHIELD, Cloak & Dagger, and others. Brad Winderbaum, head of TV, streaming, and animation for Marvel Studios, said the idea is to let audiences know they can “jump in anywhere” in the MCU and still understand what's going on. Winderbaum also alluded to a Marvel Studios rebrand that encompasses Marvel Television, Marvel Animation, and Marvel Spotlight. HBO's streaming service Max released a teaser trailer for the upcoming Dune television spinoff show, Dune: Prophecy. The show is described as taking place 10,000 years before the events that lead to Paul Atreides' rise to emperor and will follow two Harkonnen sisters as they work to establish the Bene Gesserit. Inspired by the book Sisterhood of Dune, the show has mostly been kept under wraps until now. Movie goers probably should have bought a ticket for themselves and their imaginary friends last weekend as John Krasinski's new film IF didn't quite reach expectations with a $35 million opening in the U.S. Although this means it took first place at the box office, the movie cost $110 million to make and a global box office of $55 million is still a stumble. There may be hope yet for the kid-centered flick with a lot of schools across the country ready to enter summer break. Hot off the heels of an incredibly well received first season of X-Men '97, Marvel Studios seems to have found the voice of their live-action X-Men in screenwriter Michael Lesslie. Lesslie's writing credits include Assassin's Creed, The Hunger Games: A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, as well as the upcoming Now You See Me 3. While both parties are still in talks, if the addition pans out, it will be the most significant step to actualizing the X-Men in the MCU since Disney's acquisition of Fox in 2019. Poker Face and Russian Doll star Natasha Lyonne has joined the cast of Fantastic Four in an undisclosed role. Lionsgate is developing a John Wick spinoff movie around Donnie Yen's assassin character, Caine. Yen will reprise his John Wick: Chapter 4 role in the untitled project set to shoot in Hong Kong in 2025. The franchise expanding film, with no director yet announced, will follow the events of John Wick 4 as Caine has been freed from his obligations to the High Table. 1996 golf comedy Happy Gilmore is officially getting a sequel at Netflix with Adam Sandler returning to reprise his role. Amazon's Marvel drama Silk: Spider Society — from Sony Pictures Television — is no longer moving forward at the streamer but Sony does plan to shop the series to another studio or streaming service. Sony Pictures announced last week that I Know What You Did Last Summer, a reboot of the film with the same name as the original 1997 horror slasher, is set for theatrical release domestically on July 18, 2025. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson will direct and Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze, Jr. are currently in early talks to return. Last week, Disney announced that Hulu is teaming with the estate of author James Clavell to extend the FX series Shōgun for two additional seasons. A writer's room is currently being assembled. Shōgun is currently the most viewed show in FX's history.

Known for his prolific output of low-budget horror, science fiction, and crime films, Corman passed away at his home in Santa Monica, California, at the age of 98. The episode then moves on to exciting news from Netflix. The beloved 1996 golf comedy "Happy Gilmore" is getting a sequel, with original star Adam Sandler set to return. The announcement was made during Netflix's upfront presentation to advertisers in New York. Additionally, Netflix has renewed "3 Body Problem," though instead of a traditional Season 2, the streamer is opting for additional episodes to expand the story. In a surprising and thrilling update for Marvel fans, Natasha Lyonne, known for her roles in "Russian Doll" and "Poker Face," is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She has been cast in Disney's upcoming "The Fantastic Four" reboot, although her specific role remains undisclosed. The podcast features a special phone interview with Sam Beck, a talented writer and illustrator from Toronto, Canada. Sam is the creative force behind the fantasy trilogy "Verse," which will conclude with the release of the final book in August 2024. Starting as a web-comic, "Verse" gained substantial readership and support, leading to a successful Kickstarter campaign and subsequent publication by Vault Comics. Sam shares insights into her unique world-building process and the inspiration she draws from enchanting landscapes. At least, I don't think so”!That guy called John Bowlby in the 1940's dared to put together some suppositions that I didn't like. How dare he put me in a box and think that he knows me. Yet, “Oh my goodness, that stuff he is talking about me; that describes me. I don't like this. Anyway, I am a complex being made by God and only Sigmund Freud can unravel the complexities of me”. Joe Wong with Mary Timony

Talkhouse Podcast

Hello and welcome to the Talkhouse Podcast, I'm Josh Modell. On this week's episode we've got a pair of friends who, as you'll hear, have provided emotional support and advice to each other throughout interesting, winding careers over the past couple of decades; Mary Timony and Joe Wong. Timony is probably best known as the leader of the ‘90s indie-rock band Helium, but her catalog goes far beyond it. Prior to Helium, Timony came up in the DC punk scene as part of the band Autoclave, and after she's been part of Wild Flag with members of Sleater-Kinney, fronted a band called Ex Hex, and released records under her own name. That's mostly why we're here today, because Timony is about to release her first solo record in 15 years, and it's fantastic. It's called Untame the Tiger, and it picks up on some of the psych elements that Timony has wrangled in the past—and even includes a guest appearance by the former drummer of Fairport Convention, Dave Mattacks, as you'll hear in this chat. Untame the Tiger was also produced in part by today's other guest, Joe Wong. It comes out February 23, but check out the song “Dominoes” right here. As I mentioned, today's other guest is Joe Wong, who grew up in Milwaukee and played in indie-rock bands before finding his creative path in two amazing ways: as a composer for TV and film and as a podcast host. He's written music for the likes of Russian Doll and Master of None, and he helms the popular podcast The Trap Set, which originated as a way to spotlight his favorite drummers, but has since expanded into deep and incredible conversations with all kinds of creative folks. But a few years back, partly at the urging of his friend Mary Timony, Wong began writing songs for himself rather than for other people's scores. He just released his second album, Mere Survival, and while it still has late-'60s big-pop vibes, it gets even bigger and weirder than his first. It features not only Timony, but also Pearl Jam's Matt Cameron, among other guests. Check out the title track from Mere Survival right here. This conversation took place shortly after two big release shows for Mere Survival for which Wong gathered a 20-piece band, so you'll hear a bit about that, as well as some thoughts on songwriting itself. Wong and Timony also get deep on how their parents' illnesses brought them together, about self-sabotage and perfectionism, and much more. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Mary TImony and Joe Wong for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all the great written pieces at Talkhouse.com. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time!

This week, in Arlington Heights, Illinois, a wild series of murders, some involving one family, make this a tale for the ages. Jealousy, and extreme anger seem to be the running theme, when a young woman is horribly beaten to death, a few years after her cousin was also murdered. Then, there's even more murder, as the murderer's husband murders someone, while claiming his ex wive's "spirit" forces him to! Confused? This episode will make it all make sense!!Along the way, we find out that some independent bands dominate the fair circuit, that jealousy is a terribly dumb reason to kill someone, and that someone can't project murderous thoughts into your head from prison!!Hosted by James Pietragallo and Jimmie WhismanNew episodes every Thursday!Donate at: patreon.com/crimeinsports or go to paypal.com and use our email: crimeinsports@gmail.comGo to shutupandgivememurder.com for all things Small Town Murder & Crime In Sports!Follow us on...twitter.com/@murdersmallfacebook.com/smalltownpodinstagram.com/smalltownmurderAlso, check out James & Jimmie's other show, Crime In Sports! ⚛️⚛️⚛️ Paul and Stephen read a letter from Keith, an airline pilot in Idaho who shares his incredible UFO sighting and belief in Interdimensional Sasquatch Travel. Then.... Natasha Lyonne joins, and that's when things get weird and quantum-physical. Listen in as Paul and Stephen follow Natasha around her house, feed Rootbeer the dog, and learn why she's comforted by the dulcet sound of quantum physics audio books at bedtime. Hear why discipline and restraint and the structure of mathematics is grounding and leads to talk of Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon, and Peter Sellers. Paul quotes French writer Gustave Flaubert and kills the vibe, and this is before he reveals his desire to try cat food. Natasha's man of choice is a doomsday prepper and there's a crisis in American masculinity (ask yourself men, can you fix a toilet?). Next they go deep into body horror films, and Natasha goes down a Google search rabbit hole about the movie Slither (not a Cronenberg picture). Existentialism is definitively defined (thanks Stephen!), Russian Doll is unpacked, along with Kierkegaard, Ted Chiang, and Albert Camus. That's a LOT - thanks Natasha! And you're welcome Chinwaggers! Paul Giamatti is an award-winning actor and producer. Stephen Asma is a professor and author specializing in the philosophy of science, religion, and art.  Natasha Lyonne is an actor, director, writer and producer whose recent projects include Netflix's Orange is the New Black and Russian Doll, which she also co-created, wrote, produced & directed. Next she'll appear in the film His Three Daughters and the 2nd season of Peacock's Poker Face.
