The Commissioner says businesses posting CCTV footage and images of crimes on social media causes 'real harm' - and doing so breaks privacy laws. Michael Webster says many of these images are posted to shame the perpetrators as opposed to sharing information - which breaches the Privacy Act. John MacDonald: Detaining young shoplifters is a dangerous idea

Canterbury Mornings with Chris Lynch

The Government wants to free-up the laws relating to citizens' arrests. But should this include letting retail staff detain children and young people caught shoplifting? The Chief Children's Commissioner, Dr Claire Achmad, is saying today that it shouldn't. And I agree with her. But not for the same reason. She says allowing shop owners and shop staff to detain young people would contravene the right of children to be free from violence. She says that right applies to kids anywhere and everywhere - including in shops and retail outlets. Even when they're nicking stuff. Dr Achmad says shop staff have every right to ask for stolen stuff to be handed over. But it wouldn't be fair on the young offenders if the people in the shops also had the right to detain them. And I agree with her. But not for the same reason. Overall, I'm 50/50 on this idea of citizens arrests. At the moment, there are limitations on when and where they can be done. But the Government wants to loosen those limitations. And isn't ruling out loosening them to the point where shopkeepers could detain kids stealing stuff. When I say I'm 50/50, I'm all for security guards getting stronger powers to detain people. Providing they get the right training. But as for the rest of us. Forget about it. As for shopkeepers arresting young people. Forget about it. Because it's got danger written all over it. Danger from over-enthusiastic vigilantes going overboard. And danger for the people taking these young crims on. Which is why I don't want to see people in shops being given the green light to arrest or detain kids and young people stealing their stuff. That's where I differ from the Chief Children's Commissioner. She's opposed because of the kids' right to be protected from violence. I'm opposed because of the danger to retailers who, collectively, lose about $2.5 billion every year through retail crime. I detest shoplifting just as much as the next person. But if we give shop owners and shop workers the power to make citizens arrests of kids and young people caught stealing their stuff any time, any place - what do you think will happen? It would mean unfair pressure being placed on, often young, retail workers to intervene and put themselves at risk. I know some retailers would tell their staff either not to intervene or only do so if they felt confident enough to. But there would also be some employers who would see a law change as a licence to require their staff to intervene. And, as we've seen countless times, just because someone is 11, 12 or 13, it doesn't make them any less of a risk or less or a danger. There are kids who carry weapons. There are kids who have no regard for other people and who are quite prepared to use these weapons. Do we really want shop staff being given the powers to take these kids on and to try and arrest them? Of course we don't. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A Small Voice: Conversations With Photographers

Mohamed Bourouissa is an Algerian-born French artist (b. 1978) who lives and works in Paris. Mohamed's practice moves between photography, video, sculpture, and installation, often blurring the lines between these mediums. His work explores social issues, power dynamics, and the representation of marginalized communities. He often engages with or embeds himself into specific communities for extended periods, spending significant time with individuals and groups to understand their experiences and perspectives before then creating collaborative works that challenge societal structures and explore the complexities of identity. Mohamed's work frequently addresses the tensions between different social contexts, particularly those related to race, class, and immigration, often questioning how different social groups are represented in media and art, challenging stereotypes and seeking to offer alternative narratives. His work has been exhibited in major museums and biennials worldwide, and in 2020 he received the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize for his retrospective exhibition featured in the Arles Festival the previous year.Mohamed currently has a major solo show at Fondazione MAST in Bologna Italy, curated by Francesco Zanot. The exhibition is entitled Communautés and features four notable works produced over a twenty year span between 2005 and this year - Péripherique, Horse Day, Shoplifters and Hands. In episode 259, Mohamed discusses, among other things:The sense of community growing up in the Parisian suburbsHis early experiences as a graffiti artistHis first project, Nous Somme HallesThe 2005 riots that preceded PéripheriqueWhy he decided to stage images… and why he sketches the images out firstThe theme of masculinity and his own experience of growing up without a father presentThe challenges of being a dadKnowing that he wanted to be an artistHow artists must value their own work and learn to say noHis project Horse Day and how it came aboutArt as a playgroundHis new project, HandsHow he arrives at the choice of medium and the factors that inflence that choiceWhy he is, in his own words, an ‘extremely bad photographer' Referenced:AnoushkashootJamel ShabazzEmma-Charlotte GobryFletcher Street by Martha Camarillo Website | Instagram EPISODE SPONSORS:CHARCOAL WORKSHOPS. THE ‘SUMMER SERIES' TAKING PLACE IN PORTLAND, MAINE, SEPTEMBER 15-19, 2025. FEATURING: ANTOINE D'AGATA, TODD HIDO AND CHRISTIAN PATERSON. Welcome to an At The Flicks pop up review show. Listeners will know that the best way to annoy Jeff is to make him watch a subtitled film. And that's exactly what we do here. While there were legitimate reasons for picking this feature, upsetting Jeff is always an added bonus. The film in question, Declan's suggestion. Is director Hirokazu Koreeda's follow up to Shoplifters called Monster. No, this is not a horror film (at least not in the conventional sense), it's a powerful study of prejudice, abuse and misunderstanding. In our discussion we cover: - The Rashomon film making style employed - How the different perspectives of the characters fit together to a cohesive whole - Ryuichi Sakamoto's wonderful music score (his final one). We use a very brief selection from it for our intro and outro music to the show. - What the ending means (so it is advisable to watch the film before listening to the show) - Why Dec believes this is a film we all should be watching One final comment. The film deals with domestic abuse, so it is important that you are aware of that fact before deciding to watch Monster (in part where the title comes from). If you have seen Monster please let us know what you think. As always, we are look forward to your comments. Until next time, see you At The Flicks.

On episode 256 of The AwardsWatch Podcast, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade is joined by AwardsWatch contributors Dan Bayer and Josh Parham to discuss Sean Baker's latest film, Anora, and discuss their favorite films to win the prestigious Palme d'Or award. While we are coming towards the end of fall festival season, one of the hottest festival films of the year was the winner of the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival back in May. Anora, written and directed by Sean Baker and starring Mikey Madison, has been the one of the most talked about films of the year, garnering praise from audiences around the world and setting itself up for a big run later this Oscar season. But just how good is the film? Ryan, Josh, and Dan breakdown Baker's latest, what they think of the film overall, the performances, mild discussion on the film's ending, and where they see its path in the Oscar race moving forward. Once they were done with that, they moved into a larger discussion over their favorite past winners of the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival, the Palme d'Or. With some of the most influential, celebrated films of their respected years winning the award, the Palme d'Or is a signal for excellence in cinema. Some of the films discussed ranged from All That Jazz, Taxi Driver, Pulp Fiction, The Piano, Brief Encounter, Blow Up, The Conversation, Parasite, Shoplifters, Barton Fink, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, The Tree of Life, and many more. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 1h49m. We will be back next to do discuss the main trifecta of fall festivals - Telluride, Toronto and New York - then in two weeks for AFI FEST Film Festival and take a look at the Oscar race after each.
