In a Manhattan restaurant, the narrator of Audition meets a young man for lunch. Everyone has a different understanding of the pair's relationship, including the narrator herself. Katie Kitamura says she got the idea for the story after coming across a headline that said, "a stranger told me he was my son." That headline turned into the premise for her latest novel, which experiments with the idea of contradictions to destabilizing effect. In today's episode, Kitamura joins NPR's Ari Shapiro for a conversation about her decision to cut the book in half. They also discuss other media that's split into two parts – like the films Vertigo and Shoplifters – and Shapiro shares his interpretation of the novel. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Netflix's Asura marks the fourth iteration of the Takezawa sisters' story—last seen on-screen in the 2003 film Like Asura, which was nominated for Best Film in Japan. This year, acclaimed director Hirokazu Kore-eda (Shoplifters) expands the tale into a seven-episode series set in 1979 Tokyo, where four sisters discover their father's affair and watch their family bonds fray under hidden resentments and shifting alliances. Adapted from Kuniko Mukōda's classic Ashura no Gotoku, Asura blends humor and heartbreak with Kore-eda's signature humanistic touch. Tune in as we discuss the episodes, the critical reception, and our ultimate rating. Welcome to Today's Episode!

Welcome to an At The Flicks pop up review show. Listeners will know that the best way to annoy Jeff is to make him watch a subtitled film. And that's exactly what we do here. While there were legitimate reasons for picking this feature, upsetting Jeff is always an added bonus. The film in question, Declan's suggestion. Is director Hirokazu Koreeda's follow up to Shoplifters called Monster. No, this is not a horror film (at least not in the conventional sense), it's a powerful study of prejudice, abuse and misunderstanding. In our discussion we cover: - The Rashomon film making style employed - How the different perspectives of the characters fit together to a cohesive whole - Ryuichi Sakamoto's wonderful music score (his final one). We use a very brief selection from it for our intro and outro music to the show. - What the ending means (so it is advisable to watch the film before listening to the show) - Why Dec believes this is a film we all should be watching One final comment. The film deals with domestic abuse, so it is important that you are aware of that fact before deciding to watch Monster (in part where the title comes from). If you have seen Monster please let us know what you think. As always, we are look forward to your comments. Until next time, see you At The Flicks.

On episode 256 of The AwardsWatch Podcast, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade is joined by AwardsWatch contributors Dan Bayer and Josh Parham to discuss Sean Baker's latest film, Anora, and discuss their favorite films to win the prestigious Palme d'Or award. While we are coming towards the end of fall festival season, one of the hottest festival films of the year was the winner of the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival back in May. Anora, written and directed by Sean Baker and starring Mikey Madison, has been the one of the most talked about films of the year, garnering praise from audiences around the world and setting itself up for a big run later this Oscar season. But just how good is the film? Ryan, Josh, and Dan breakdown Baker's latest, what they think of the film overall, the performances, mild discussion on the film's ending, and where they see its path in the Oscar race moving forward. Once they were done with that, they moved into a larger discussion over their favorite past winners of the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival, the Palme d'Or. With some of the most influential, celebrated films of their respected years winning the award, the Palme d'Or is a signal for excellence in cinema. Some of the films discussed ranged from All That Jazz, Taxi Driver, Pulp Fiction, The Piano, Brief Encounter, Blow Up, The Conversation, Parasite, Shoplifters, Barton Fink, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, The Tree of Life, and many more. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 1h49m. We will be back next to do discuss the main trifecta of fall festivals - Telluride, Toronto and New York - then in two weeks for AFI FEST Film Festival and take a look at the Oscar race after each. Music: “Modern Fashion” from AShamaleuvmusic (intro), “B-3” from BoxCat Games Nameless: The Hackers RPG Soundtrack (outro).

Supermarket staff feel threatened, frustrated, fearful and powerless over shoplifters wheeling out goods by the trolley load. This is the daily experience in some stores around the country. Staff at Countdown supermarkets have been confronted with machetes, knives, and one instance a gun. Disdain from some shoplifters can extend to walking of the store with trolley laden with meat, cosmetics and alcohol, valued at thousands of dollars. Point Chevalier Countdown in Auckland is a high risk store - but representative of a nationwide problem. A local resident, whom we are not naming, likens shopping there to running a frightening and demoralising gauntlet. Kathryn discusses the gravity of the situation with Jason Stockill who is the director of stores tor Woolworths NZ, and First Union's Rudd Hughes who is the National Secretary for retail and finance.
