Abstract: In the present study, we developed a chemical method to produce dihydro nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMNH), which is the reduced-form of nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN). We demonstrated that NMNH was a better NAD+ enhancer compared to NMN both in vitro and in vivo mediated by NMNAT. More importantly, NMNH significantly increased the reduced NAD (NADH) levels in cells and in mouse liver, resulting in cellular reductive stress and elevated reactive oxygen species. NMNH also induced cell cycle arrest and suppressed cell growth. Metabolomic analysis revealed that NMNH inhibited glycolysis and TCA cycle. However, NMNH treatment did not cause observable difference in mice. Taken together, our work demonstrates that NMNH is a potent NAD+ enhancer, and induces reductive stress to suppress cell growth. Mineralogist Jeff Post has a one-of-a-kind job: he’s curator of the National Gem and Mineral Collection, a collection of over 375,000 rock and mineral specimens housed at the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) in Washington, D.C. In addition to spectacular specimens of rare minerals and crystals, the collection contains over 10,000 gemstones, including the infamous Hope Diamond, one of the most valuable objects on planet Earth. In this episode, Jeff describes his day-to-day work of maintaining and growing this invaluable collection, which includes being personally responsible for the Hope Diamond and countless other treasures. Data in natural history museums are diverse but often fragmented. By integrating data systems that included collections and research and by using Linked Open Data, museum data can be discovered and mobilized.

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History is getting more parasites! Anna Phillips from the Department of Invertebrate Zoology reviews her work on the evolutionary diversity of leeches and tapeworms, as well as the transfer of the National Parasite Collection to the NMNH.

The Alaska Office of the Smithsonian’s Arctic Studies Center hosted an Iñupiaq language workshop in January 2011, bringing together eight fluent speakers of Alaska’s northernmost Native tongue for four days of intensive discussions about NMNH and NMAI objects in the Smithsonian exhibition, Living Our Cultures, Sharing Our Heritage: The First Peoples of Alaska at the Anchorage Museum. One goal of the project is to document a language that is now spoken fluently by fewer than 600 people, 92% of them over the age of 65. Another is to create language teaching videos for use in the North Alaskan schools.
