A long, long time ago, the region that is now New Mexico was part of a giant land mass, and it was located on the equator. The climate was warm and tropical and much of the present-day state was covered in shallow seas. This was long before humans or even dinosaurs existed—252 to 541 million years ago. The New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science has recently opened a new permanent exhibition, The Bradbury Stamm Construction Hall of Ancient Life, that covers the vast geologic history of ancient life in the state. Piecing together the story of ancient life in New Mexico can read like a detective story, and Matt Celeskey, Curator of Exhibits, and Spencer Lucas, Curator of Paleontology, help us unravel it. Sonia Winner is the CEO of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. In July 2018, she became the 10th director of the Museum in its more than 100-year history, dating back to 1920. Since then, she has spearheaded a $150 million reinvention of the institution—reimagining its campus and exhibits to highlight the interconnectedness of life on Earth.Under her leadership, the Museum continues its century-long legacy as one of the nation's top natural history institutions, stewarding over 12,000 acres of protected ecosystems and housing more than 5 million artifacts and specimens. It is supported by a nearly 60-member Board of Directors, 140 staff members, and approximately $282 million in assets. Before joining CMNH, Sonia built an impressive career in higher education and philanthropy. At Columbia University, she led record-breaking fundraising efforts, helping to secure $6.1 billion for the university. Prior to that, she held leadership roles at Case Western Reserve University, serving as associate dean of both the Weatherhead School of Management and the School of Law. A lawyer by training, she also served as Director of the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law at Cleveland State University. This was an amazing conversation! Sonia's passion for this work shines through as we explore the transformative power of museums, cultivating childhood curiosity, the Museum's rich history and legacy, her personal journey to leading a major cultural institution, the ambitious centennial project aimed at revitalizing the museum experience, the overall business of museums, and so much more.00:00:00 – The Magic of Museums and Childhood Curiosity 00:06:59 – Personal Reflections on Museums and Nature 00:09:07 – Sonia's Journey to the Museum Leadership 00:16:42 – Understanding the Cleveland Museum of Natural History 00:17:02 – The Museum's Legacy and Community Impact 00:19:56 – Honoring History While Embracing Change 00:25:50 – The Centennial Project and Its Vision 00:31:52 – The Business of Museums: Challenges and Opportunities 00:35:15 – Balancing Accessibility and Sustainability in Museums 00:36:28 – Creating Memorable Visitor Experiences 00:37:38 – Dinosaurs: The Gateway to Natural History 00:40:45 – The Role of Museums in Scientific Literacy 00:45:22 – Trust in Museums: A Reflection of Society 00:47:41 – Understanding the Value of Local Museums 00:50:04 – Personal Stories and the Impact of Museums 00:52:03 – The Future of Museums: Programming and Community Engagement 00:53:13 – Leadership Lessons in the Museum Sector 00:56:43 – Women in Leadership: Challenges and Opportunities 00:57:27 – Hidden Gem -----LINKS:https://www.cmnh.org/https://www.linkedin.com/in/sonia-winner-2699123/-----SPONSOR:Roundstone InsuranceRoundstone Insurance is proud to sponsor Lay of The Land. Have you ever discovered that one of your favorite places is being renovated? Like your grandmother's kitchen, your favorite restaurant, or even a museum, and you worry that the charm or the appeal of the place might be gone after the renovation? Podcast editor Patrick O'Sullivan and Producer Mary Donohue went to just such a place, the Peabody Museum of Natural History at Yale in New Haven. We had both been to the museum many times before the pandemic. But, the newly-reopened Peabody Museum is not just better, it's fantastic! The massive dinosaur and prehistoric fossil collections in the Burke Hall of Dinosaurs are what every schoolchild remembers from a fieldtrip. The renovation has created new space for exhibiting more of its cultural, anthropological, and other scientific collections, including never-before displayed artifacts and contemporary art. For example, one intriguing new area was the History of Science and Technology gallery that included Yale's first microscope — purchased in 1734. Just this summer, the Hall of the Pacific has opened with artwork, photographs and artifacts that celebrate the cultures of Pacific Islander communities. With a $160 million dollar bequest, they've increased the size of the museum from 30,000 to 44,000 square feet, added 5 classrooms, new galleries and a study gallery for faculty and students to use. The space is bright, inviting and provides visitors a place to sit down or bring lunch. Maybe the two things that will have the biggest impact in the future is that the museum is now completely free to visit. They have also worked hard to correct old, outdated information as well as to interpret the artifacts in a way that acknowledges their history more fully and authentically. The guest for this episode is David Skelly, Director of the Peabody Museum of Natural History and Yale Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Our thanks to David Skelly and Steven Scarpa, Associate Director of the museum's Marketing & Communications Department for making arrangements for the podcast recording as well as a fabulous tour. Don't forget that the museum admission is now free! You can reserve timed entrance passes on the museum's website to help you plan your visit. https://peabody.yale.edu/visit And once you're in New Haven, don't forget that the Grove Street Cemetery from Grating the Nutmeg episode # 186 is just blocks away - or check out the New Haven Museum's new Amistad gallery! ------------------------------------------------------ Can you spare $10 a month to help support the new voices, research, and books we feature on Grating the Nutmeg? Not too long ago I was heading home after a trek through Forest Park and saw a swarm of black-colored birds — hundreds of them — in the sky, trees and power lines, on rooftops and lawns and on sidewalks across the street. Fascinated by the super-flock, I consulted a couple bird experts, sharing pictures and a video. Paul Sweet, a collection manager at the American Museum of Natural History's department of ornithology, was one of the experts who confirmed that these weren't crows, but common grackles. Sweet, a Brooklyn resident, has worked at the museum for 32 years. One of the most common misconceptions he's heard is the one I brought up. https://epicenter-nyc.com/mistaking-blackbirds-with-hitchcocks-in-queens/ https://www.nycgovparks.org/places-to-go/birding https://www.nycgovparks.org/events/birding https://www.nycaudubon.org/events-birding/programs-and-events/local-trips-classes https://www.feministbirdclub.org/ https://www.instagram.com/latinooutdoors_nyc/ https://www.meetup.com/outdoor-afro-ny/ https://www.amnh.org/research/vertebrate-zoology/ornithologySee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Following successful raids on the Smithsonian, the Museum Of Natural History, the Biggera Waters Public Library and the back of his Mum's wardrobe, Geoff unfortunately discovers the long-lost first three episodes of The WonderLand; from back when Little Kev was but a glint in a Covid vaccine vial. And now: after months of painstaking restoration of the original 24-track master tapes (performed at huge expense), here they are - for the first time since the last time and for the last time this time - all in one inconvenient 30-minute-or-so package. Listen now, while you can, before it hopefully gets lost again. NO TRANSCRIPT! (believe me, we're doing you a favour)
If you've ever been to a Sinclair gas station and see the green dinosaur out front, paleontologist Tony Fiorillo says it's a fair approximation of New Mexico's Alamosaurus—which was first discovered in New Mexico more than one hundred years ago. Not only is the Alamosaurus a “New Mexican icon,” as Fiorillo says, but it's also the only dinosaur discovered in North America so far that appears to have migrated from South America. In addition to his work as a researcher and paleontologist, Dr. Tony Fiorillo is the executive director of the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science. His career has covered several continents largely to study dinosaurs and the environments in which they lived. For more than two decades, Fiorillo focused on the Cretaceous of Alaska. There, his teams made significant advances in the understanding of ancient Arctic biodiversity and paleoecosystems as a way of understanding future climates. In this episode, Fiorillo joins Encounter Culture host Emily Withnall in a conversation about arctic dinosaurs, what 19th-century scientists understood about the first dinosaurs they found, and how dinosaurs can provide insight for what's in store for humans.
