We're talking Diamonds Are Forever in this week's episode of (Not So) Live from Asteroid G. It's the last Sean Connery Bond film (at least officially), with the actor returning after Lazenby left the role, and... well, it's a very Connery film. That's not really a good thing.
Eurovision season wouldn't feel complete without a visit from Tobias Larsson, Eurovision fan & historian, to tell us the backstory of another ESC luminary. This time it's Udo Jürgens, the man who gave Austria their first win and sold over a hundred million records worldwide. It's a fun look at one of the most successful singers & songwriters in ESC history, and we're glad to celebrate Udo just before the contest returns to Vienna for Eurovision 2026 60 years after his win. Another bumper episode, another double feature of lesser-loved James Bond movies. This week we check out a Connery and a Brosnan: Diamonds Are Forever (1971), directed by Guy Hamilton, and The World is Not Enough (1999), directed by Michael Apted. Sean Connery was getting a little tired of Bond at this point (to say the least), and Pierce Brosnan's Bond films seemed tired almost before they got started... but are these films as bad as their reputations suggest? Stick around for our Bond Tropewatch segment, where we rate each of these films against the checklist of standard Bond tropes to see which fares best! Fair warning: we go into the plots of both films in some detail, including the endings, but we feel like James Bond is somewhat unspoilable in general, so we won't be announcing a Spoiler Territory section for either of these films. Matthew Field and Ajay Chowdhury, authors of Spy Octane: The Vehicles of James Bond, Volume 1, reveal the extraordinary detective work that unearthed new and ground-breaking secrets behind some of 007's most iconic vehicles and the machines that propelled Sean Connery and George Lazenby through the first seven Bond adventures. The authors share fascinating stories about the customised Toyota 2000 GT convertibles built exclusively for You Only Live Twice, including one long thought lost, as well as the Aston Martin DBS Vantage and the Mercury Cougar XR-7 convertibles featured in On Her Majesty's Secret Service. They also explore the history of Little Nellie, the remarkable autogyro designed by Wing Commander Ken Wallis, which became one of the most memorable gadgets in Bond history. Volume 1 covers the first seven EON films: Dr. No, From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, You Only Live Twice, On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Diamonds Are Forever. It tells the fascinating story of the Aston Martin DB5, Toyota 2000GT, the autogyro Little Nellie, the Disco Volante, the spectacular two-wheeled Ford Mustang stunt and much more. Step into the golden era of James Bond and hear the untold stories behind the cars, bikes, and aircraft that defined the world's longest-running film franchise!
I might overuse this word a little bit, but on this week's episode we do have a true pair of legends in conversation on the Talkhouse Podcast this week: Maynard James Keenan and Daniel Ash. Keenan is of course best known as the frontman for Tool, the dark, complex, heavy band he formed way back in 1990—but whose records come few and far between. Keenan is also the frontman for A Perfect Circle, but the reason for today's chat is yet another band, Puscifer. This one started out almost as a solo outlet for Keenan's weirdest ideas: There are comedic elements, and—fun fact—Puscifer actually sprung to life as part of a Mr. Show sketch. (Google it, it's a good story.) But the band has evolved over the years into a steady trio that features Keenan alongside Carina Round and Mat Mitchell, and that more recently has explored Keenan's most theatrical and straightforward impulses. It's funny, weird, and heavy, and the brand new Puscifer album, Normal Isn't, even nods sonically to UK post-punk bands like Killing Joke. Check out “Self Evident” right here. The other half of today's conversation is Daniel Ash, whose resume also includes a remarkable number of incredible bands, starting with Bauhaus, moving directly into Tones on Tail, and then heading for a long stretch into Love and Rockets, which reunited a couple of years ago for some very welcome shows. Ash's guitar playing over the years has been quietly influential on a ton of players; you can hear his tone in a remarkable swath of bands. Last year, he released the first album by his latest outfit, Ashes & Diamonds. Called Ashes & Diamonds Are Forever, it's unmistakably Ash's voice and tone, though in some flashier dressing on occasion. It's a lot of fun. Check out “Teenage Robots” right here. In this wide-ranging conversation, Ash and Keenan talk about Keenan's wine business—he was nice enough to send Ash some bottles in advance of this chat—as well as touring, making videos, and the seemingly inevitable future of AI. Ash thinks it's going to be good, so even if he's wrong, it's nice to hear some optimism. Ash is also obsessed with motorcycles, leading Keenan to suggest an intervention. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Maynard James Keenan and Daniel Ash for chatting. After the wonderful surprise that was OHMSS last week, SURELY tonight's 007 film will be just as good! Right? ...Sean Connery is back!!! DUH DUH DUH DUHHHHHHHH
Don and Dude continue the “I Love the 80s” journey with a trip to 1981, a year when economic anxiety and political tension coexisted with malls, arcades, and cable TV escapism. Country and Pop both learned how to look and sound modern. One host brings a polished, harmony‑driven Country blockbuster from Alabama, while the other counters with a nervy, hook‑stuffed New Wave debut from Men at Work, tracing how crossover production, global pop, and quirky storytelling reshaped early‑'80s radio. The AlbumsAlabama – Feels So Right (1981) A smooth, harmony‑rich Country set that blends traditional instrumentation with Southern rock and soft‑rock polish, Feels So Right finds Alabama sanding down honky‑tonk grit into warm, radio‑ready crossover anthems. Built on Randy Owen's conversational vocals, tight three‑part harmonies, and clean electric arrangements, the record moves from intimate ballads to dark Hollywood cautionary tales, sketching how early‑'80s country stepped confidently into the pop mainstream without losing its storytelling roots.Men at Work – Business as Usual (1981) An off‑kilter, endlessly catchy debut, Business as Usual fuses New Wave, reggae‑rock, and pop hooks into anxious, witty songs about paranoia, identity, and global culture, all filtered through an unmistakably Australian lens. Colin Hay's nervy vocals, Greg Ham's iconic sax and flute lines, and the band's elastic grooves turn tales of door‑knocking strangers, daydreaming kids, and Vegemite‑fueled wanderers into one of the defining pop documents of the early '80s.Diggin' AlbumsOurs – Rocket's Red Glare (2025) The long‑running alt‑rock project from Jimmy Gnecco returns with a cinematic, emotionally charged set that pairs soaring vocals and guitar crunch with themes of love, loss, and resilience. Rocket's Red Glare channels late‑'90s melodrama into a mature, widescreen sound that feels tailor‑made for headphones and midnight drives.Red Rider – As Far As Siam (1981) Canadian rockers Red Rider deliver melodic, thoughtful heartland rock on this 1981 LP, balancing straight‑ahead riffs with introspective writing. Anchored by “Lunatic Fringe,” the album became a staple of AOR radio and helped cement Tom Cochrane's reputation as a songwriter with both punch and atmosphere.NITE – NITE (2025) Dallas twins Kyle and Myles Mendes push their darkwave/synthpop project into a sleek, shadowy new chapter on this self‑titled release, blending post‑punk guitars, electronic pulse, and emotive hooks. The record dives into pain, obsession, and alienation over nocturnal beats and synths, landing somewhere between dancefloor melancholy and bedroom confession.Ashes and Diamonds – Are Forever (2025) A supergroup of post‑punk and alt veterans, Daniel Ash, Bruce Smith, and Paul Spencer Denman, craft a moody, cinematic collage of glam, dark pop, and experimental electronics on Are Forever. Recorded after a page‑one restart, the album leans into Hollywood decadence, identity crises, and existential drift, its clipped‑headline lyrics and atmospheric production feeling like a neon‑lit fever dream for aging club kids.Follow the show on Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and Bluesky @albumnerds, and support by subscribing, rating, reviewing, and sharing.“We'll never fully understand the 80s until we admit they were equal parts escape fantasy and quiet panic—and the best records let both feelings live in the same song.” – Cameron Crowe

Send us a textDaniel Ash, along with Peter Murphy and brothers Kevin and David Haskins, formed Bauhaus, a band who were pioneers of goth rock. Their debut single, “Bela Lugosi's Dead” is considered by many to be the first record of the gothic-rock genre. They released five studio albums, and during that period, Daniel and Kevin formed the post-punk band Tones on Tail in the early 1980s. In 1985, David Haskins, now as David J, rejoined his Bauhaus bandmates, minus Peter Murphy, and they became Love and Rockets. Where Bauhaus was known for its gothic sound, Love and Rockets' had a brighter, more pop feel. They enjoyed a succesful run in the '80s and '90s, touring internation-ally and were featured prominently in the glory days of MTV. And now, Daniel Ash, along with drummer Bruce Smith of Public Image Ltd. and bassist Paul Spencer Denman who backed Sade, is back. The band is Ashes and Diamonds. The atmospheric sound of their debut album, Ashes and Diamonds are Forever, is fantastic. It releases October 31st and according to my talk with Daniel, the Halloween release is “appropriate”. I've been excited to get to this Bond film, mainly because everyone seems to really hate it. Diamonds are Forever was never a favorite of mine growing up but I never thought it was the worst! Well, now I get to see if as an adult, I feel the same way. Anita also has a real good laugh at villains crashing ATV's. Welcome back to the Drinks and a Movie Podcast! In this seventh episode of my James Bond series, I'm diving into Diamonds Are Forever (1971), which marks Sean Connery's return as Bond after a break from the role. This film, while classic in its own right, is also notable for its place in the Bond franchise's continuity—or lack thereof. Diamonds Are Forever, along with On Her Majesty's Secret Service and You Only Live Twice, deviates from the correct order of Ian Fleming's novels. The correct sequence is Thunderball, followed by On Her Majesty's Secret Service, and then You Only Live Twice. This shift is significant because it disrupts the emotional and narrative through-line, especially when it comes to Bond's relationship with Tracy and the aftermath of her death, which was central to On Her Majesty's Secret Service. By skipping over the emotional weight that should have followed, Diamonds Are Forever somewhat lightens the thematic stakes of Bond's character arc, leaning into a more campy, adventurous tone instead of the emotional depth seen in Fleming's books. To pair with this film, I'm sipping on Elmer T. Lee Single Barrel Sour Mash Bourbon, crafted from Buffalo Trace's Mash Bill #2. Elmer T. Lee, a legendary figure in the bourbon world. He was became a master distiller at Buffalo Trace and was instrumental in the creation of Blanton's Bourbon. His single barrel sour mash bourbon is known for its smooth, rich profile, making it the perfect companion for a Bond film that balances high stakes with a lighter, more fun tone. Join me as I discuss how Diamonds Are Forever shifts the tone of the Bond saga, why the change in the novel order matters thematically, and why Elmer T. Lee's bourbon is an ideal drink to accompany this spirited, yet somewhat disjointed, chapter in Bond's story.

PRP 007 Mini-Broadcast: Episode 8 – Diamonds Are Forever Since the beginning of the show, Brian has done his best to strong-arm discussion of Agent 007 into as many podcasts as he could. Finally he convinced Sarah to embark on a new mission: the Permanent Record Podcast 007 Mini-Broadcast! This occasional series from your friends Brian & Sarah started with "Dr. No" and will work its way up to the most recent Bond adventure, and on the way, it will discuss and critique all of the 007 theme songs and other relevant recordings. It's a dream come true for one of the hosts - and for Bond fans everywhere! In this 8th episode, Sarah and Brian are once again joined by Bond author Robbie Sims (Quantum of Silliness: The Peculiar World of Bond, James Bond), and the trio turn their attention to the 1971 movie, “Diamonds Are Forever.” This Bond outing sees the return of the original 007, Sean Connery, after George Lazenby stepped away from the role. But Sir Sean isn't the only one who has returned after a hiatus from the films; the theme song is sung by Shirley Bassey, who was the voice behind the iconic “Goldfinger” theme and returns to lend her vocal talents to the “Diamonds Are Forever” title track. Brian, Robbie, and Sarah have a lively discussion about the theme song and Dame Shirley, of course, but they cover other topics such as David Arnold's rendition of the song, the group Q: The Music, and Robbie's fabulous (but not too fabulous) t-shirt, as well as a bit of speculating on the future of the Bond franchise. It's fun for all—well, at least fun for some!
