The Portage church of Christ is a group of pre-denominational Christians that are striving to serve the Lord together. Our goal is to please God, and we believe that the best way to do that is to follow the pattern that was established by the churches in the first century and revealed in the New Testament. We have no creed or doctrine except the Bible and we follow the Bible only. We strive for unity in the teaching of New Testament doctrine. Our congregation is not part of, or subject to, any larger man-made religious organization. We are a completely autonomous congregation. We are locally governed, just as the church in the first century was. How does one becomes a member of this church congregation? The exact same way as seen in the Biblical accounts. On the day of Pentecost following Jesus' resurrection, people who repented and were baptized were saved (Acts 2:38) and the saved were added to the church (Acts 2:47). These saved people were members of the body, or church (Colossians 1:18). To become a Christian, the Bible teaches: Hear the gospel (Rom. 10:17) Believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God (John 8:24, 58, Heb. 11:6) Repent of past sins (Luke 13:3, 5) Confess Jesus as Lord (Matt. 10:32-33, Rom. 10:9-10) Be baptized for the remission of sins (Acts 2:38, Mark 16:16) Remain Faithful to Christ (Rev. 2:10, 2 Tim 4:7-8)

Brett Sanner James 1:19-25
In Hebrews 13:17, We are exhorted to obey our leaders who spoke the word of God to us. They guide and equip the saints for ministry. And they, too, will give an account to God for their ministry. The author of Hebrews then points the reader and listener to the God of Peace. He declares that the God of Peace brought up from the dead, that Great Shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the everlasting covenant, Jesus Christ our Lord. Jesus is resurrected and is alive even now! Does this not remind us of how God answered Jesus' prayer in Heb. 5:7. The God of peace did just what for our Lord Jesus Christ prayed by raising Him from out of the dead. He will do so for us as well who believe and trust in Him alone. Let's open our Bible to Hebrews 13:17 as we conclude the book of Hebrews with Dr. Mitchell on the Unchanging Word Bible broadcast.

It's good to read and hear God's Word on a regular basis, but merely hearing or agreeing with the Word isn't the end goal. True faith obeys God's Word. In this sermon, Dr. Aaron Cole reminds us that true faith receives God's Word humbly and then responds.

We need to get back to God's design. Words matter. Speak life and not death According to scripture… Marriage is a blessing.Children are a blessing. …but sometimes life gets complicated. Divorce happensSeparation… Death…Difficulty and pain, but God's promise still remains true. Blessings for Blended, Mended, & Extended Families. No matter what … God has blessing for you. Blessing for you kids…Future relationships…Blessing as you heal from past hurt. Blended Families In Genesis 1 marriage shows up and it is “very good!” But in Genesis 3 other things show up…LyingGuiltBlameShameSin & death Very good, blessed marriages are always damaged by bad behavior. It is important that we follow God as a family. Some of this breakage causes what we call blended families. When two come together in marriage but bring children from previous marriages… The Brady Bunch! There are blended families in the Bible. Blended Families DeathPolygamy (God was never for polygamy) Adoption Jesus was raised in a blended family. Jesus had a mother named Mary.Jesus had a father named God. But Jesus also had an earthly father. Joseph treated Jesus as his own son. Joseph is a man of great character in Scripture. Matthew 1:18-19 18 This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. 19 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. Joseph and Mary are pledged to be married… But Mary becomes pregnant! The son is not Joseph's. V-19 Joseph was faithful to the law. The law and culture of the day made it traditional for the woman to be put to public shame. …Often to be executed by stoning. Joseph was faithful to law, but He chose grace and was going to divorce her quietly to save her shame and death. Joseph was unusual. He covered someone he thought was unfaithful with mercy and love. Love covers! 20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” Joseph made his blended family work 1 Honor and respect for his familyHe honored Mary even when he was not sure… 2 Follows GodHe had a dream and trusted God!DOES NOT ARGUE! OBEYS! Can you do that? Can God speak to you in His word… a message… a dream… and you obey? Do it God's way! 3 Sacrifices for others. Laid down his rep - Faced ridicule. Laid down his plan – Receives dream to go to Egypt. Leaves home, carpenter business… trusts God's plan. Names the son Jesus. Culture named the first son after the father… but God's plan was different. Blended families are not easy.Friction and dis-ease – requires sacrifice. 4 Patience in the process Joseph waits to consummate the marriage. Joseph waits to return from Egypt. You must have patience. Blended parenting - “You're not my dad…” Adoption Surprise This is a picture of a step daughter serving her step father with adoption papers… I want to take your name.I want you to be my dad.Not just blended… but family. 5 Great outcomes are possible It is not a coincidence that Jesus became a carpenter. The greatest man in Jesus' life, Joseph, was a carpenter and taught him the skill. God has blessings for blended families. Mended Families We live in a time where divorce is too frequent. Divorce is painful and leaves behind wreckage. -Children-Emotions-Finances Remarriage after divorce has less chance of succeeding statis...

As we examine the fourth tenet of the Jewish Principle of Agency, we discover that the relationship between the principal and the agent requires an obedient posture. The one who is sent must obey the will of the sender, honoring the mission at the expense of his own interests. After situating this tenet in its Jewish context, we turn to the Gospel of John to witness several ways in which Jesus willingly obeys the mission for which God has sent him. Welcome to a journey through the annals of faith, where the improbable becomes possible and the ordinary transforms into the extraordinary. Today, Pastor Tiffany Gowesky takes us through the life of Gideon, a hero whose story is etched in the sacred text of Hebrews 11.Imagine a time of tumult and oppression, where the Israelites, besieged by the Midianites, cried out for deliverance. Into this scene of despair steps Gideon, a man not of royal decree or warrior's pedigree, but a humble farmer, the least in his family and doubtful of his own significance. Yet, it was this very Gideon whom God chose to lead Israel to freedom, setting the stage for one of the most astounding narratives found in the Bible. As we explore Gideon's story, we witness a transformation led by divine hands, where Gideon's conventional expectations of warfare and leadership are overturned by God's unconventional methods and plans. From an army of 32,000 to a mere 300, every reduction in numbers, every step away from human might and logic was a step deeper into the realm of faith. With each test, with each reduction, Gideon's trust was sculpted, not in the strength of numbers, but in the power of God who promised victory against all odds.Join us in this video sermon as we trace the steps of Gideon. Let us draw inspiration from his journey, learning how the challenges we face today might not be barriers but rather God's way of revealing His plans and giving us the opportunity to respond in faith and trust.Prepare to see the unseen, believe the unbelievable, and discover how heroes are made not by their might, but by their faith. Welcome to the story of Gideon where God's plans reveal the true strength and power of faith.
