This week we're getting expended as we wrap up Bong June-ho with Bong Joon-ho's sexy sci-fi farce, MICKEY 17 from this very year of 2025!Full spoilers ahead as we discuss Bong's version of a feel-good love story, Edward Ashton's original novel MICKEY 7, the inherently boring faces of techno-religious fascism, reconciling your morality with your identity in late-stage capitalism, and how "lower" classes can become a self-exploitative population. Y'know, comedy! It's the Robert Pattinson show -- his mondo weirdo energy, falling down stairs, underwear modeling, and the DNA his performances share with Jim Carrey. Plus, we're getting into Naomi Ackie's "he said no pickles" performance, Steven Yeun's underrated comedic chops, and Mark Ruffalo's fake teeth and Toni Collette's sauces. And to wrap up the series, we're giving our top 3 Bongs. We think you'll agree that our choices are very brave.
Bong Marley comes on the show to dish the hot gossip on the Washington cannabis market. Also, A Garden Update.

We escape to another planet to eat Spam, sauces, and macaroons before discussing Mickey 17. Is this another Bong hit or pass? The premise of Mickey's lab rat-like existence is troubling yet thoughtful. Robert Pattison is incredible as all Mickey's one through eighteen. Although the film captures the insanity and stupidity of today's politics, it may be a little too preachy for some and could lead to a loss of interest. Let's face it. Most of us go to the movies to escape and not to be reminded why we want to escape.

Episode Notes There's quite a bit of preamble, skip to around 13:20 if you don't want to hear about 85 other TV shows. The Darkness and the Light: Hello, Bryan Fuller! Don't put a fork in the transporter? Someone's taking out Kira's old associates, one by one. Odo needs to learn better data stewardship. Chekov's herbs. The episode tries to be two different things at once and sort of fails at both, which is too bad because they're both good ideas. The Begotten: A baby changeling with radiation sickness? Odo's old "dad" returns. Oh hey another baby! People really need to just follow a birthing plan, jeez. Odo's a sad gooboy again! We're surprised how much this episode makes us like Mora. Joon Ho Bong is probably the most well known Korean director outside his home country of South Korea. His filmography includes some pretty well known movies including MEMORIES OF MURDER (2003), THE HOST (2006), SNOWPIERCER (2013), and PARASITE (2019). His latest film, also English language such as SNOWPIERCER was, is MICKEY 17 (2025).From IMDB: “During a human expedition to colonize space, Mickey 17, a so-called “expendable” employee, is sent to explore an ice planet.”The film was directed and written by Bong based off the novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton. The cast includes Robert Pattinson in another stellar performance and includes Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, and Steven Yeun. Receiving fairly good reviews by all, your co-hosts take a look at the film and give their thoughts.

Bong June-ho enters its second second week, and its first from our mini-series' namesake. It's time to discuss Bong Joon-ho's THE HOST from 2006 to complete our set of screw ups in the backdrop of failed American imperialisms with REPO MAN.One of Bong's trademarks is his depiction of class in his films, and while this isn't the first example in his repertoire, it's his first film expressly focused on class. We love our family of screw up underdogs led by Song Kang-ho, and we're doing our best to determine an Official THE HOST Sibling Order.Alarmingly, this movie's premise is based on a true life incident, the McFarland Incident! Somehow, this film is a less ridiculous version of the real story, and we're discussing this and the political fallout that chased Bong upon this film's release.Next time on the pod: what if a guy was multiple guys? And what if you were all those guys? It's the first part of our next pairing, Spike Jonze's BEING JOHN MALKOVICH 1999!
Alex R. Wagner and guest, Kelly Virginia Cline, dive headfirst into a whirlwind of current events and bizarre tangents. The episode kicks off with a hilarious, albeit chaotic, attempt to get answers from a new AI chatbot, leading to a segment they dub "AI Congress."The conversation takes a sharp turn to the Middle East, with the hosts offering their unfiltered and often satirical takes on the escalating tensions between Israel and Iran. They dissect speeches from political figures, questioning the narratives presented by the media and politicians alike. From there, the episode spirals into a wild discussion about everything from the Tuskegee experiments and the bubonic plague to celebrity encounters and conspiracy theories surrounding COVID-19 and Jeffrey Epstein's island.Just when you think it couldn't get more random, the hosts find themselves in a heated debate about pangolins, their trafficking, and their surprising connection to traditional medicine. The episode wraps up with a look at protests in Los Angeles and a spirited, and slightly intoxicated, debate about political allegiances and the state of the nation.Chapter Markers:0:00 - Intro0:28 - A New Pope?1:10 - No News Is News with Kelly Virginia Klein1:41 - What TV Show Would You Be On?2:50 - Netanyahu and the Bombing of Iran8:03 - Taking Sides8:54 - How Do You Solve the Middle East?9:32 - Operation Rising Lion13:16 - Netanyahu on Saddam Hussein14:31 - Little Saint James and the Fountain of Youth16:00 - Biden's Ransom to Iran18:15 - Inflation and the Price of Meat20:25 - Protests in LA22:50 - The Tuskegee Experiment and Vaccine Hesitancy25:20 - The Bubonic Plague and European Rats28:00 - COVID-19: Bat or Lab Leak?30:30 - The Pangolin Conspiracy35:20 - The ICE Raids That Weren't41:20 - A Bong, a Candle, and a Book of Matches45:30 - The Liberal Insurrection51:00 - Dave Chappelle's "8:46"53:25 - The End of an Era: Tucker Carlson and Don Lemon59:45 - Trump on the Iran-Israel Conflict1:01:45 - The Media's Orchestration of Fear1:07:55 - The Man Who Drank Horse Semen1:09:00 - JD Vance and Hillbilly Elegy1:14:00 - Tim Scott's Abandonment1:16:15 - AI Congress1:18:30 - Israel, We're Begging You, Stop1:21:45 - The Liberal Insurrection in California1:25:20 - Trump's Birthday Parade1:27:00 - Outro

In this week's episode of High on Home Grown, Macky, Billy, and John break down the top cannabis news stories from the UK and beyond: Macky covers a major scandal in UK policing, as Commander Julian Bennett is sacked (again) after refusing to take a drug test. He also dives into two bizarre UK busts: one involving the kingpin of a cannabis factory network in Birmingham, and another where cannabis was smuggled into Cardiff disguised as Yankee Candles. Billy discusses the upcoming ACMD review of cannabis-based medicines and how the UK cannabis industry is reacting—some calling it progress, others fearing more red tape. John brings updates from the US, where Minnesota lawmakers have voted to decriminalize bong water, and Colorado's governor signs off on new marijuana and psychedelics legislation. Unfortunately, Margaret couldn't join us this week, but we've still got a packed episode of cannabis news and commentary. It's time for another mini-series: it's Bong June-ho! We're taking some of Bong' Joon-ho's favourite films and pairing them with his own and first up: fuck ups trying to survive against the backdrop of failing American imperialism. Today we start things off with Alex Cox's 1984 debut, REPO MAN!We're discussing our journey with this movie as we went from mild haters to powerful lovers, unfiltered punk worldviews, and how the soundtrack to REPO MAN changed America's punk landscape forever thanks in large part to Iggy Pop.We're trashing Reagan and car culture while praising Cox's beautiful ode to character through its casting choices. Plus, Nick tells Erin about the Brat Pack and we commit to at least 200 episodes for a Jazz Punk Teen surprise!Next time, we complete the pairing with Bong Joon-ho's monster movie with a fuck up at its centre: THE HOST.

Jimmy Gestapo, born James Drescher, has been the wild-hearted, unfiltered voice of Murphy's Law since day one. Formed in 1982 in the gritty heart of New York City, Murphy's Law quickly became a standout in the hardcore scene—not just for their aggressive energy, but for their infectious sense of humor and blend of punk, ska, and party-rock vibes. With a larger-than-life personality, Jimmy G made sure Murphy's Law wasn't just another hardcore band—they were the life of the damn party.Through countless lineup changes, underground success, and miles of touring, Jimmy has remained the band's beating heart. Murphy's Law earned their place on the map with landmark shows and albums like their 1986 self-titled debut and Back with a Bong! in 1989. Known for mixing blistering punk fury with saxophones and slapstick fun, the band has built a fiercely loyal following around the world—and especially in the sweaty clubs of the East Coast.Never one to let things slow down, Jimmy and the band continue to tour relentlessly. Their live shows are notorious for being loud, loose, and totally unpredictable. Whether Jimmy is pulling fans onstage, handing out beers, or ranting hilariously between songs, he gives the crowd more than a concert—he gives them a full-on punk rock experience. That kind of authenticity is rare, and it's why Murphy's Law is still packing venues over four decades in.The band is currently back in the studio working on their first new album in over 20 years. Set to be their sixth full-length record, it marks an exciting new chapter for Murphy's Law—one that blends their classic irreverent spirit with whatever madness Jimmy's been cooking up. Fans can expect all the usual grit, groove, and mischief that defines the band, along with a few new surprises along the way.For all things Murphy's Law—tour dates, music, merch, and updates on the new album—you can find them online here:

John is joined by Semafor editor-in-chief Ben Smith to discuss the role of private group chats in pushing Silicon Valley's politics to the right—and many of its most powerful figures into the arms of Donald Trump. Ben lays out how dozens of hush-hush Signal and WhatsApp groups emerged during Covid among the tech elite in reaction to what its members saw as the stifling woke conformity of social media; the seminal role of venture capitalist Marc Andreessen in seeding these forums; and how their influence now flows through X, Substack, and podcasts, making them the "dark matter of American politics and media." Ben also contends that, 100 days into his second term, Trump is starting to feel the pull of political gravity; that Semafor, which he cofounded three years ago, still retains the vaulting ambitions the company famously trumpeted at launch; and that the recent tumult in financial markets has elevated "Margin Call" from a cult classic to the greatest Wall Street movie of all time.
