Trauma is a Universal Part of the Human Experience Scarlett Lewis and her mom, Maureen, are back at the Blue Colony Diner in Newtown, CT discussing forgiveness. Trauma is a universal part of the human experience, and helping kids develop the emotional intelligence to face their pain with curiosity rather than shame or avoidance could be life-changing. When children (and adults) learn to explore their pain, they can transform it into self-awareness, resilience, and even compassion for others. Forgiveness makes you stronger because when you forgive you take your power back! Learn more About Scarlett here: https://chooselovemovement.org/

The Power of Compassion in Action to End Cycles of Violence with Azim Khamisa In this raw and soul-stirring episode of the ChooSELove Podcast, Scarlett Lewis sits down with Azim Khamisa, a father whose 20-year-old son, Tariq, was senselessly murdered by a 14-year-old gang member. In a moment when most would be consumed by rage, Azim was overcome by something else—a mystical experience that delivered him straight into forgiveness. This conversation dives deep into: The spiritual encounter Azim had just hours after his son's death Why he chose forgiveness over vengeance—and how it healed him How he now partners with the grandfather of his son's killer to save other children The power of compassion in action to end cycles of violence Azim's story will shake you, then awaken you. This is forgiveness not as a soft virtue—but as a radical, world-changing force. You don't want to miss this. It's not just about tragedy—it's about transformation. News for the Heart talks with Tom Campbell on Choosing Love Instead of BEing Right. The insightful conversation with Tom Campbell on "Choosing Love Instead of Being Right," couldn't be more relevant in our current global landscape. It's a powerful reflection on how the very tools designed to connect us—the internet and social media—have inadvertently become catalysts for division and fear. We find ourselves in a deeply fractured world. We are struggling to find common ground, largely because of our ingrained human need to be right. This discussion eloquently highlights the overwhelming challenge of navigating a 24/7 news cycle, where the line between fact and fiction is blurred by a constant influx of information, exacerbated by AI's ability to make fabricated narratives appear authentic. The struggle for peace and unity is intensified as we retreat into echo chambers. It has been reinforced by algorithms that feed us content aligning with our existing beliefs. Tom Campbell's assertion that we've created a "perfect storm" resonates deeply; never before have we experienced such pervasive division coupled with immediate access to a torrent of information. Social media, in particular, thrives on engagement, often prioritizing sensationalism—even hate speech. Which has an over genuine connection, creating a fertile ground for conflict rather than understanding. The addition of materialism to this equation is a crucial point, as it fuels a possessive mindset that reinforces the ego's need to defend "what's theirs" . As well as, consequently, to be right. Yet, as the podcast beautifully conveys, true growth and the evolution of consciousness aren't about being right; they are about embracing kindness, love, and acceptance, with an unwavering focus on peace and unity. Relationships, especially real-world interactions, are presented as the true crucible for this growth, fostering balance and positivity in a way that often eludes the superficiality of online interactions. The hopeful message is clear: this era of separation can conclude if we consciously choose love over the relentless need to be right. The only real change we can enact begins within ourselves. By understanding our fears, making a deliberate choice for kindness and positivity. We can learn to listen without the need to justify our own beliefs. We open ourselves to a profound shift—a lowering of personal entropy that allows us to truly be love. This podcast truly gets to the heart of what matters, offering a compassionate pathway towards healing our divided world. We're getting to the Heart of What Matter!
In this episode, we explore what it means to shift your focus away from fear and toward love, hope, grace, and forgiveness. It's easy to spiral into worst-case scenarios—but what if we chose to look for something different? You'll hear thoughts on: Letting go of fear-based thinking Why what you focus on is what you find The power of choosing love as your lens Taking back the driver's seat from fear How small mindset shifts can create lasting peace This is a gentle reminder that you are not powerless—you get to decide where your attention goes. ----more----

Scarlett Lewis is the founder of the Choose Love Movement, a global nonprofit dedicated to bringing social-emotional learning into schools, homes, and communities. Her son Jesse was just six years old when he was murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary School during the 2012 mass shooting. In the wake of unspeakable loss, Scarlett made a conscious decision not to let anger, bitterness, or hate define her future. Instead, she built something beautiful in Jesse's name. In this conversation, Scarlett opens up about who Jesse was—a brave, confident, dirt-covered little boy who radiated life. She shares what it was like to raise him, what she remembers from the day of the shooting, and how she found the strength to keep going. She also reveals the deeply personal signs, instincts, and spiritual moments that have helped her stay connected to Jesse even after his death. Scarlett's story is one of radical love, personal courage, and post-traumatic growth. It's a story of presence, purpose, and the choices we make after everything falls apart.
