Jon Alexander began his career in advertising, winning the prestigious Big Creative Idea of the Year, before making a dramatic change. Driven by a deep need to understand the impact on society of 3,000 commercial messages a day, he gathered three Masters degrees, exploring consumerism and its alternatives from every angle. In 2014, he co-founded the New Citizenship Project with Irenie Ekkeshi to bring the resulting ideas into contact with reality. Since then, they have been on a mission to figure out how to use our skills - not just to sell stuff - to Consumers, and involve people in the decisions that affect their lives as Citizens. In this engaging conversation, Jon shares some great insights from his latest book Citizens: Why the Key to Fixing Everything is All of Us. We also explore how we can move away from being a passive consumer to being an active agent, how collective power leads to exponential results, the responsibility we have to build our own systems, and what a Citizen democracy means for the government. We explore how entrepreneurship within cooperative movements help to drive community ownership in the online economy. We're excited to be joined by Nathan Schneider, a professor of media studies at the University of Colorado Boulder, who we know from the early days of the platform coop movement, when he participated in the first ever Ouishare Fest in 2013. The very fact that Ouishare Fest brought Nathan together with Trebor Schultz for the first time is telling of what a powerful space that Ouishare Fest provides. And this year, Ouishare Fest is back, organised next week right at the outskirts of Paris - from 23 to 25 June. Check it out at http://ouisharefest2021.com/. Currently, Nathan Schnieder directs the Media Enterprise Design Lab, and he has written books on cooperative enterprise, the Occupy movement, God, and the Internet. He is truly fascinated by the chronicling of ideas, of perfect worlds, of ordinary imaginations in practice. With his experimental attitude, Nathan believes that every word is a hypothesis and a test. Tune in to this episode as we explore the cooperative movement and the different forms of community opportunities it provides. We also discuss ‘benevolent dictatorship', levels of community participation, multi-stakeholder structures, and what we mean by community. Albert Cañigueral, the OuiShare Connector for Spain and Latin America, is a Barcelona-based sharing economy expert helping to organize the fifth edition of OuiShare Fest, which takes place this July in Paris. Cañigueral describes himself as passionate about, but also critical of, the burgeoning sharing economy. Cañigueral acknowledged that sometimes tensions arise between global, American-based corporations and smaller, local startups. Global companies like Uber face regulatory challenges abroad similar to those they face in the United States. In Spain, only professional, licensed drivers can drive with Uber, and Uber was banned from the country for over a year, returning in March 2016. According to Cañigueral, the primary source of tension around the sharing economy in Barcelona is related to rental prices and housing shortages. Barcelona’s City Hall is focusing on growing and building the “commons-oriented collaborative economy,” and is particularly interested in promoting open source software.

Francesca Pick is a project manager, consultant and speaker that works on how tech can change business, society and human interaction. She is a Connector at OuiShare, which she describes as a lab for new ways of working, and her latest project is Cobudget, a collaborative funding tool. We talk about practices she and her colleagues have developed at OuiShare like Minimum Viable Bureaucracy and we debate whether organisations with no hierarchies exist. I had the good fortune to chat with Francesca Pick, co-founder, writer, speaker, and big brain in the OuiShare think tank. We discussed the challenges and future of the global force and community that is OuiShare -- the upcoming OuiShare Fest, and… the death of the collaborative economy?
On this week's Byte: Guests: That Startup Show is a local webseries poking fun at the huge (and extremely earnest) startup culture in Melbourne. It's filmed at the Savoy Tavern in the city, and producer and co-creators Sally Gatenby and Ahmed Salama joined the team in studio. It's awesome - check it out. Laura recently was in Paris (yeah, it's a hard life) for OuiShare Fest, a conference celebrating the sharing economy and a huge range of ideas, and caught up with a few interesting peeps: Dennis Boehresof GoPopUp, linking client's pop-up ideas with spaces to play them out in cities around Europe; Rajesh Makwana of Sharing As Our Common Cause, creating a platform to build a global sharing economy; Allison Cook of The Story of Stuff, the documentary-turned-movement based around the lifcycle of material goods. News in Depth: The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), founded by Tim Berners-Lee and tasked with developing standards to ensure the future of the web, is setting up a branch in Australia, which will be hosted at the Australian National University in Canberra. We're one step closer to ISP monopoly, with iiNet shareholders approving a takeover by TPG, having recently also merged with Internode. The ACCC will be reviewing the deal before it any approvals happen. Chinese police have shut down a huge counterfeit iPhone factory, after complaints from customers. Scott Heiferman is founder at Meet Up.com and tripped over Lisa at OuiShare Fest in Paris Scott is always working to evolve and understand what inspires and helps people to start a community. He shares how Meet Up and community will unfold to create more vakue that it collects. “The biggest problem in the world is that the smartest people are not working on the biggest problems in the world” In the collaborative economy organising people and responding to what they talked about when they met is a skill we can all learn together. Lisa asks about the business model for Meetup.com and how it is community funded. There was a time when you had to be a writer to be published now anyone can start a blog or post a photo on instagram. MeetUp.com NYC Tech Meet Up Scott Heiferman on Twitter Lisa Gansky on Twitter
