Trauma and Addiction Therapist, EMDR Specialist, Mother, Survivor, and valuable resources in Columbus Ohio. Sarah has helped me tremendously with learning about trauma. Specifically, helping me understand that traumatic experiences can be as simple as being scared of the dark as a child or witnessing your parents argue to more extreme examples like being abused in a relationship or experiencing combat as a military veteran. In the most simple of ways, Sarah describes Trauma as, "anything that happens to us that causes our brain to go into survival mode." You can never be sure how someone will interpret a life experience. To one person, an experience can be nothing more than a blip in their day and to another, it can a memory imprinted in their mind as something that changed their life forever. Even more interesting, looking into the role of generational trauma and how the traumatic experiences of your ancestors still influence our thoughts and feelings today. Sarah is fascinated with how trauma manifests itself in people's lives. From addiction to relationships and any variety of risky behaviors, if you are not able to get to the root issues, often long-lasting change can be almost impossible. Sarah is a big believer in the teachings of Gabor Mate who specializes in addiction and childhood trauma as well as Bessel van der Kolk M.D. who wrote The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma. In this episode, Sarah shares some of her personal experiences with feeling trapped in an abusive relationship and navigating her way into the field of professional counseling. You may also find it interesting how Sarah is able to pull out a few of my own traumatic experiences that were deeper than I realized. I explore the effects of growing up in the Bible belt and the confusion I experienced as a kid trying to figure out why my friends and loved ones debated on "who was in" and "who was out." I loved this conversation and I hope you do as well. If you have any questions for Sarah, you can reach her at shelgeson1217@gmail.com. If you know someone that would benefit from hearing this conversation, please share it with them. We are always grateful for your feedback. PS: For some reason, the audio overlaps about an hour and a half in and it sounds as if Sarah and I are interrupting each other. I'm sorry in advance and hope it doesn't take away from the conversation. Love Preston
A lot of us assume that we feel so shitty because of all the external work and life stress we’ve got going on that’s out of our control, and while that TOTALLY is playing a major factor in our health issues (both mental and physical), we are also ALWAYS in control of our morning and evening routines. Yes, even with children and small animals or early af wake ups, this is possible and doable for you. Today's episode will teach you about a method I call “the 3 keys”. The 3 keys are easy to remember because they all start with the letter M and they all take only 5 minutes to do in the morning. They are:Meditation. Morning Pages. Movement. Ready to change your own life? Tune in! PS - For the full show notes, head on over to mariebarkerwellness.com/blog Oh! And if you'd like my FREE Stress Less Journal accompaniment, grab that here! Catie and Nate are back with episode double-oh-seven, and what better excuse is there for critiquing some James Bond films, eh? We're putting Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace in the pressure cooker this time around, so strap yourself in while we overthink everything and both want to marry Daniel Craig. PS: For some reason, Catie's sound is a bit rekt; apparently some idiot stood on the cable connector. Apologies, we'll sort it out for the next episode. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/heresmymovie/message

Cymene and Dominic discuss last month’s catastrophic blackout in Venezuela on this week’s podcast. Then (17:39) we’re thrilled to have the chance to chat with Geoff Mann and Joel Wainwright about their fascinating, provocative new book, Climate Leviathan: A Political Theory of Our Planetary Future (Verso, 2018). We start with how the book came to be and what they mean by the potential future scenarios of “climate leviathan,” “climate behemoth” and “climate Mao.” We then turn to how climate change might prompt planetary sovereignty and what will happen if global capitalism is allowed to define that sovereignty. We talk about the enduring power of nationalist sentiments and imaginaries, especially in the form of adopting a “war footing” against climate change, and why they think we shouldn’t put all our eggs in the Green New Deal basket. We debate to what extent Keynesianism is really petroknowledge and how the image of leviathan haunts political thinking today. We close with a fourth scenario they term “climate X” and what we can imagine about the possibilities of a non-capitalist locally-sovereign future. For episode 114 Producer Dub, Jamie's husband, sat in for Paula. What transpired was more like husband and wife banter than a show. So they decided to shelve it and start over. But their bickering over mobile phones, encounters with a crazy Best Buy customer and a failed social media segment were too funny not to share. So here's 30 minutes of clips from the "lost" version of Episode 114 of The Uglee Truth. *PS - For new Uglee Cuts every week, make sure you visit our APP page and download the Podcast Source.
