On this episode of CSG, J.D. Martin (Exploring Theology) joins Joshua Davidson and myself as we seek to answer questions raised by Dr. Leighton Flowers (Soteriology 101) concerning what it means for God to “permit” events that happen in reality from the Reformed/Calvinist perspective. This leads to an in-depth discussion on the topic with answers to questions like “What do Calvinists mean when they use terms like ‘permit', ‘decree', & ‘cause'?” and “Do ALL Calvinists hold to what is philosophically known as ‘determinism'?” After a good 35 min back-and-forth between J.D. and Josh, establishing the fact that some Calvinists do indeed hold to the idea of “contra-causal freewill” (and not the picture that Determinism as a whole paints), we arrive at the question “is the ability to do otherwise a necessary ingredient for moral culpability?” and how does this interact with Calvinism and Reformed Theology. Hint...the answer has to do with us being “in Adam”. Guess you'll have to check out the episode to hear J.D.'s explanation!!! Ultimately I believe both Josh and J.D.'s interaction with each other brought A LOT of clarity in this discussion between Calvinists and Non-Calvinists alike. It was friendly, in-depth and like I said, extremely clarifying in answering the questions raised by Dr. Flowers and others on this topic in general! CSG host's Joshua Davidson and Tyler Fowler sit down with their good friend Michael Moore to discuss the practical benefits of STUDYING God's Word as well as the importance of having an active prayer life in our relationship with Jesus Christ! We are getting practical on our 6th episode of our Practical Christianity series about Scripture and Prayer and we begin by unpacking a definintion for prayer by John Piper. After that, Josh, Tyler and Michael address questions like "What if I can't find time to pray or study Scripture?", "What do I do if prayer or Bible study feel's like a routine/ritual?" and "What do I do if I don't feel like praying/studying Scripture?" and dive into Romans 8:22 to explain the Holy Spirit's role of intercession in the life of the follower of Jesus! We then turn to Ephesians and James to examine what the Apostles say about prayer and Bible study and the results of those activites!
After brief introductions, new stories about getting stung by bees #sharethesting! and all the fun things everyone else has been up to with their podcasts and personal lives, Joshua presents us with an introduction to the “functional” interpretation of Genesis 1. This view is currently being set forth by scholars like John Walton and Scot McKnight. David, however, takes a more traditional view of the text! The two bring out their similarities, for example, both denying “eternalism”, but there are differences the two handle with arguments laid out in a brilliant, Christ-like, and productive way! Meanwhile, Andrew and I offer engaging commentary as David and Joshua spar it out in the episode to END ALL EPISODES ON CREATIO EX NIHILO!!!!!……. …...jk :] Check this episode out if Genesis, creation, or different interpretations of Genesis 1 & 2 interests you!!! Extremely thought provoking in my opinion and a great starter episode for anyone interested in diving deeper in this subject! We also want to give a shout out to our co-host, Joshua Davidson, who is at home recovering from Covid 19. We have a fundraiser set up to help them out with their bills for the month pinned at the top of CSG's Facebook Page! And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness He called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day. And God said, “Let there be an expanse between the waters, to separate the waters from the waters.” So God made the expanse and separated the waters beneath it from the waters above. And it was so. God called the expanse “sky.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day. And God said, “Let the waters under the sky be gathered into one place, so that the dry land may appear.” And it was so. God called the dry land “earth,” and the gathering of waters He called “seas.” And God saw that it was good. Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth vegetation: seed-bearing plants and fruit trees, each bearing fruit with seed according to its kind.” And it was so. The earth produced vegetation: seed-bearing plants according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day. And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to distinguish between the day and the night, and let them be signs to mark the seasons and days and years. And let them serve as lights in the expanse of the sky to shine upon the earth.” And it was so. God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night. And He made the stars as well. God set these lights in the expanse of the sky to shine upon the earth, to preside over the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day. And God said, “Let the waters teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth in the open expanse of the sky.” So God created the great sea creatures and every living thing that moves, with which the waters teemed according to their kinds, and every bird of flight after its kind. And God saw that it was good. Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters of the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day. And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, land crawlers, and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so. God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that crawls upon the earth according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness, to rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, and over all the earth itself and every creature that crawls upon it.” So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and every creature that crawls upon the earth.” Then God said, “Behold, I have given you every seed-bearing plant on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit contains seed. They will be yours for food. And to every beast of the earth and every bird of the air and every creature that crawls upon the earth—everything that has the breath of life in it—I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. And God looked upon all that He had made, and indeed, it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day. ² Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. And by the seventh day God had finished the work He had been doing; so on that day He rested from all His work. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because on that day He rested from all the work of creation that He had accomplished. This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made them. Genesis 1:1-2:4 BSB Other Creatio Ex Nihilo Texts__ As it is written: “I have made you a father of many nations.” He is our father in the presence of God, in whom he believed, the God who gives life to the dead and calls into being what does not yet exist. Romans 4:17 BSB Through Him all things were made, and without Him nothing was made that has been made. John 1:3 BSB For in Him all things were created, things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities. All things were created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. Colossians 1:16-17 BSB Now faith is the assurance of what we hope for and the certainty of what we do not see. This is why the ancients were commended. By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible. Hebrews 11:1-3 BSB I beg you, child, to look at heaven and earth. See everything that is in them and know that God made these things from nothing, and created humankind in the same way. 2 Maccabees 7:28 CEB Questions To Ponder Did God create with the appearance of age? Description Join us on our 60th episode for a special Q & A on the nature of Hell, the resurrected wicked and the immortality of the human soul!!! Your hosts, Tyler Fowler and Joshua Davidson are wrapping up our study on Conditional Immortality and Eternal Conscious Punishment so we decided to bring our two friends, Robert Wiesner (Pastor at Kenmore Baptist Church and Chris Date (Host of the Rethinking Hell podcast) finally back on for one last showdown!!! Josh and I begin the episode with questions for both Robert and Chris like “What set you on your journey with this topic?” and “What is missing from the other side that would convince you of the truth of your opponents position?” After brief introductions of the two positions, Chris and Robert nuance differences and similarities of their views of the immortality of the human soul, resurrection of the dead and eternal life. After an exciting back and forth, the two get into an exegetical debate on the content of Luke 20:35-36 and the fate of the resurrected righteous! After hashing out the details of the text we begin to wind down, and end the show with Josh raising one last theological question: “Is the ‘Image of God' retained in the resurrected wicked?”. Guess you're going to have to listen to the episode for the answer from both Robert and Chris on this one! Overall, as Robert put it after the episode off air “A lot of MEAT on them bones!” to which I wholeheartedly agree! This will be the last installment (for a while anway ;) ) of our Conditional Immortality and Eternal Conscious Punishment series! Make sure to check out ALL our episodes on this topic with Chris, Robert and Ross Burns either in CSG's episode archive or our playlist on YouTube! God bless and enjoy! In this episode of CSG we are joined by Joshua "Jimmy" Davidson and Travis worth to discuss why submission, obedience and worship are all important aspects of the Christian life! Show Notes Posted Below: (Travis’ Topic) Obedience, Submission & Worship w/ Joshua Davidson & Travis Worth Is God in the “bad” thing’s that happen in my life? Travis leads off this discussion with the reason’s why he chose obedience, submission, and worship to discuss this time on CSG, especially when we all find ourselves loosing passion in times of trouble. How does obedience effect joy? When was the last time you remember explicitly obeying a request from an elder or leader in your local church? When we obey leaders, we obey Scripture When was the last time you felt the Holy Spirit work in your heart? Romans 12:11 (go when you don’t want to; see Philippians 2:13) What is the difference between obedience and submission? Difference between blind submission and willful submission. Jonah Commandments are tools for shaping us like Christ. Be Holy for I am Holy. Submission leads to worship. Deep worship leads to high reverence of God. Joy is transcendent in nature (Jesus said I leave my peace with you) despite feelings. Romans 10:9

Mark is delighted to welcome Rabbi Joshua Davidson to the podcast today. A graduate of Princeton, and, like Mark’s wife, a graduate of Hebrew Union College as well, Rabbi Davidson is currently the Senior Rabbi of Congregation Emanu-El of the City of New York, having previously served as senior rabbi of Temple Beth El of Northern Westchester in Chappaqua, New York. He is involved in numerous social justice issues and organizations, and, in 2009, was honored for his interfaith efforts by the Westchester Jewish Council and the AJC. On today’s episode, Rabbi Davidson has chosen to discuss Genesis 18 and Genesis 22 and the relationship between them. Throughout the episode, the Rabbi offers both his summary of these passages as well as his perspective on their various lessons and interpretations. Touching upon such notions as God’s love of a good argument, what God and Abraham teach each other, and the differences between the public and private aspects of both righteousness and the lives of public figures, he and Mark highlight the dual elements of Abraham’s personality and what we can learn from it. As you listen in, you will quickly discover that the analysis of these two seminal passages of the Torah here today, by these two insightful seekers of biblical truth, truly brings to life ‘both their depth and their relevance to our present struggles, challenges, and opportunities’. Episode Highlights: · Rabbi Davidson’s summary of the passages, how they relate, and their significance for him · God’s love of a good argument · Abraham stepping out of comfort to argue with God · What God and Abraham are teaching each other · Privately righteous and publically righteous people · Public figures and their private lives · Some different interpretations of the Akedah · The multiple potential lessons from it · The dual elements of Abraham’s personality · The lessons that Rabbi Davidson has learned about humankind Quotes: “Even though Abraham is a junior partner in the project of teaching humanity, Abraham is still a partner.” “This is the greatest act of hutzpah in human history.” “Of course, there were 10 righteous people.” “The story of Sodom and Gomorrah is our admonishment against this sense that what’s happening within our city, within our country, doesn’t have anything to do with us.” “The difference in his behaviors in the two passages is extraordinary.” “No passage in the Bible’s been studied more than this one…it’s a terrifying passage.” “You’ve got to take care of your own family, too.” “We ground our leadership in our relationships with those closest to us.” “Abraham may, in fact, be testing God.” “I think the writers of the Bible placed it in the Torah as a polemic against child sacrifice.” “The Bible has always been countercultural.” “We project onto God what we believe to be right and what we believe to be wrong.” “There are fundamentalists who use religious tradition to commit heinous crimes.” “The private mess and the public hero, and the complicated father we have.” “Our public figures and our patriarchs – these are not perfect people.” “The Bible was either written by God or an anti-Semite because no people would write their own history this way.” “People will always try to do the right thing.” “They don’t know that they’ve got that strength until they find themselves in that position.” Genesis 18 - https://www.sefaria.org/Genesis.18.1-33?lang=en&with=all&lang2=en Genesis 22 - https://www.sefaria.org/Genesis.22.1-24?lang=en&with=all&lang2=en Links: The Rabbi’s Husband homepage: http://therabbishusband.com/ Mark’s Twitter: https://twitter.com/markgerson?lang=en The Rabbi’s Husband Newsletter contact: daniel@therabbishusband.com

Fresh off of his contributions to Borderlands 3, Gearbox senior VFX artist Ash Lyons calls in to talk about the post-release mood, parenting in the triple-A development space, and his long road to Borderlands. I first connected with Ash over Twitter around the time I put out my interview with Joshua Davidson and we got along immediately--he's a parent of young kids, he has a passion for connecting with newer devs and creators, and he is hilarious. I'm not saying I'm all those things, but he is. We wanted to do a recording pretty much right away, but decided to wait until Borderlands 3 hit shelves. After launch, and with Gearbox's blessing (thanks again) it was game on. In addition to career and background stories, Ash shared some favorite games, contributions he's most proud of in Borderlands 3, and even filled me in on the inspiration for some of the game's messier moments. In this episode I am joined with an amazing individual I met through the youtube channel "keyblades" where thousands of spiritual dialogues have been published during the crazy adventures of my Asia/Missionary life. When Joshua contacted me I had no idea about what he had done before, but was incredibly surprised at his bio literally just minutes before this conversation. Joshua worked in a variety of offices in the Marine Core, operated incredibly high level equipment the NSA uses, went to Afghanistan and now works for the DOJ. His bio reads like a laundry list of awesome things, so I was surprised to see his humility of Spirit and willingness to not only be a soldier on Earth but also in Heaven. Join us in this engaging and feeding conversation, hopefully the first of many!

Imagine living without a safe home, having your family exposed to life-threatening dangers, no clean water, living in your own filth. This is real life for over 828 million families living in slums without adequate housing, in need of a better solution. With this understanding Brett Hagler of New Story Charity knew he needed to help find a solution. His solution came in the form of a nonprofit — New Story Charity. Not only would it provide incredible housing to those who need it the most, but it would also provide them with clean water, sanitation, and protection. And the best part; the ability for New Story Charity to do this at scale for countless families. We talk with Brett, our first nonprofit guest, about making a difference, turning the nonprofit sector inside out, his time at Y Combinator, operating with transparency, hiring the best, and the very important partnerships that make creating new, sustainable housing at low costs a reality. We're joined this week on #thePawdcast with entrepreneur, football fanatic, shoe connoisseur, and finance enthusiast, Cole Oliver, to discuss CHDR, a free, automatic financial management startup that helps you make the most out of your money. Cole founded CHDR (pronounced cheddar) to solve a real issue that he was facing as a college student. Spending too much money after a night on the town, he wanted to understand better his purchasing habits. The solution? CHDR, the app. CHDR breaks down your personal spending habits, where you’re spending the most money, the major sinkholes draining your bank account without ever noticing, and helps you make small corrections over time. Imagine being the one responsible for generating an additional $9,000,000 in leads for your company, and in less than one business quarter at that. Not unbelievable enough for you yet? How about closing over $1,000,000 in additional revenue for that same company, in less than six months. Surely, you do not believe this is something one person could do. However, for one man, the guest on #thePawdcast for this week, Alex Berman, this is simply the norm. Alex Berman dives deep into his past, learning how to not only become one of the top marketers, influencers, and well-rounded hustlers on the internet, but how he is helping agencies around the world scale their revenue dramatically with fewer ad dollars, and with less time, than ever before. We chat a lot on this podcast about how any company, any startup, any enterprise can become better marketers. What goes into a great marketing strategy? What is the most overrated thing that most of you are doing? What about the most underrated? What are the small things that you can start applying to your business, today, that will have compounding interest on your growth in the coming months? We cover this all on Episode 037 of #thePawdcast with Alex Berman, and the only thing that you need to do is listen. Bon appetite to the knowledge that awaits you! It isn't every day that your company is featured on Shark Tank. It isn't every day that you are told to "get the f*ck outta here” by Kevin O'Leary either. Hell, it isn't every day that you decide to start a hardware company that literally shocks people. All of this is the norm when it comes to serial entrepreneur Maneesh Sethi of Pavlok. We explore how he is causing big changes in the lives of thousands of customers around the globe. We dive deep into Maneeh's origins. We chat about hacking productivity, to hiring a woman on Craiglist to slap him in the face, to somewhat stumbling into the idea that is now Pavlok and going all-in to turn his vision into a reality. We also chat a lot about the obstacles of building both a hardware and software company, the future of Pavlok, their struggles as they continue to try finding market acceptance, and the long-term goals that Pavlok hopes to accomplish. This week on #thePawdcast, we're joined by Anthony Maher, co-founder of one of the fastest growing coworking brands in the world, Benjamin's Desk. We discuss quite a bit on this episode. We chat extensively about Anthony's original career as a professional athlete playing soccer throughout the United States. We discuss how Anthony got involved in real estate, the lessons he learned while in real estate, and how he uses this skill-set today when it comes to his many coworking locations. We chat about why and how he got involved in coworking, the origins of Benjamin's Desk, how he is focused on attracting 10,000 members, how he has gone from a little location in the heart of Philadelphia to over hundreds of thousands of square footage throughout the entire city. We chat further about where the future of coworking is going, how he has competed against large coworking brand names such as WeWork, and everything in-between. One of our favorite things about #thePawdcast is hearing what makes people tick, what they are most passionate about, why they do what they do. The answer for Dan Hanrahan is that the art behind email signatures and how to utilize them to generate more revenue is what makes him tick, what keeps him up at night, what has helped him create the company Sigstr that is growing consistently, at an exponential rate, raising investor capital and generating millions for their customers around the globe. We dive deep into this episode about the science behind a great email signature, the challenges, obstacles, and accomplishments that Dan has faced starting and growing Sigstr. We discuss a lot about managing teams, where email signatures will go especially in a marketplace being modified with newcomers such as Slack and Hipchat alternatives to email, and more. If you can't tell how much passion this young man has, just wait until you listen to the interview itself. Josh has been creating businesses since he was in high school. Listen and feel the electricity from Josh. You can learn more about his three pieces of advice he'd give to millennials at the 21 minute mark of this interview: It Took 8 Years To Be An Overnight Success Jack Dorsey said it best. There are a ton of entrepreneurs that look like an overnight success, but more than likely, they have been grinding for years on end. It's just you either haven't paid attention to them, or they are finally getting their big break. Josh is one of those that have worked their butt off for years and are finally getting the attention that they deserve. Even at the ripe age of 22, he's accomplished a lot. Josh mentions that when you're starting a business, it's ok to want to be rich, be your own boss or other ways to fill up the ego. Every entrepreneur has a goal similar to that, even if they don't openly admit it. Money and other materialistic things aren't going to support you when you fall. What drives Josh is that he loves helping entrepreneurs with their ideas and bringing them to life. If you're not sold on your purpose, all of your other goals won't stop you. When the going gets tough, you'll have your core identity and mission to keep your head held high and maintain that drive to succeed! You're Not Going To Be Rich At First The first three years at Chop Dawg, they made around 30k in it's entirety. Which Josh mentions isn't a lot, based off of how many hours he spent working on all of the projects. This past year, Josh took a $0 paycheck. He did this to allocate more funds back into his business. This past year he's been able to quadruple their revenue and are currently having the best year of their business. Start At An Early Age Josh had the luxury of starting his business when life was least stressful. Josh started his business at what he believes was the "perfect time." He currently doesn't have many responsibilities outside of life. He has to pay for his insurance, car, rent, and material things, but other than that. That's about it. His wallet won't be broken by other things, and has allowed him to do things that others may not be able to do.
