In this next period, we will be recording a mini-series on addiction starting with this first episode with Specialist Addiction Therapist Mark Dempster. In 2013, the Centre for Social Justice determined that the level of addiction in the UK made it the “addiction capital of Europe.” This includes the use of legal substances, mainly alcohol, and the use of Class A drugs, which include heroin, cocaine, meth, and hallucinogens. £36 billion is spent by the nation every year on treatment relating to drug and alcohol abuse. At the time of filing their report, titled 'No Quick Fix', the UK had the highest rate of addiction to opioids and the highest lifetime use of amphetamines, cocaine, and ecstasy across Europe. Many view addiction as something that only affects the users themselves but, in reality, casualties from substance abuse are taxing entire communities and society as a whole. Addiction in the UK affects everyone from loved ones to clinicians and the everyday public. In the conversation, we examine the five stages of addiction, common cognitive pitfalls, habit Vs. addiction, and Mark's organic story through his lived experience with addiction. We also look at the 12-step process of Narcotics Anonymous (NA). Mark is a specialist addiction therapist and a recovery coach within a Harley Street Counselling Practice. He has witnessed chemical and behavioural addictions both personally and within his circle of family and friends. Learning the practice of psychotherapy for addiction helped Mark reach out to all types of addicts, from programmes working with prisoners, helping at homeless shelters, and to wealthy bankers from Canary Wharf.  According to Mark, the addict's circumstances varied but their addictions had a lot in common. In the conversation, we also cover: Defining Addiction & UK stats  - The health burden & impact on the individual and extended families  Origins – how people become addicted (habit Vs addiction)  Dual diagnosis  The 5 stages of addiction  The NA & AA 12-step model (origins and application) Common cognitive pitfalls  Breaking the cycle – different types of therapy (CBT, DBT, ACT, +/- PET for PTSD)  Anecdotal experiences and cases from Mark's perspectives  You can find out more about Mark here: https://markdempstercounselling.com/about/ You can find out more about Narcotics Anonymous here: https://ukna.org You can find out more about Alcoholics Anonymous here: https://www.alcoholics-anonymous.org.uk

As Parents begin the Journey of their own Healing, gaining a true understanding of how we each embrace our Higher Power, will create opportunity for a fruitful building of our foundation of Faith. Trauma and Addiction Therapist, EMDR Specialist, Mother, Survivor, and valuable resources in Columbus Ohio. Sarah has helped me tremendously with learning about trauma. Specifically, helping me understand that traumatic experiences can be as simple as being scared of the dark as a child or witnessing your parents argue to more extreme examples like being abused in a relationship or experiencing combat as a military veteran. In the most simple of ways, Sarah describes Trauma as, "anything that happens to us that causes our brain to go into survival mode." You can never be sure how someone will interpret a life experience. To one person, an experience can be nothing more than a blip in their day and to another, it can a memory imprinted in their mind as something that changed their life forever. Even more interesting, looking into the role of generational trauma and how the traumatic experiences of your ancestors still influence our thoughts and feelings today. Sarah is fascinated with how trauma manifests itself in people's lives. From addiction to relationships and any variety of risky behaviors, if you are not able to get to the root issues, often long-lasting change can be almost impossible. Sarah is a big believer in the teachings of Gabor Mate who specializes in addiction and childhood trauma as well as Bessel van der Kolk M.D. who wrote The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma. In this episode, Sarah shares some of her personal experiences with feeling trapped in an abusive relationship and navigating her way into the field of professional counseling. You may also find it interesting how Sarah is able to pull out a few of my own traumatic experiences that were deeper than I realized. I explore the effects of growing up in the Bible belt and the confusion I experienced as a kid trying to figure out why my friends and loved ones debated on "who was in" and "who was out." I loved this conversation and I hope you do as well. If you have any questions for Sarah, you can reach her at shelgeson1217@gmail.com. Tonight’s guest is Dr. Cali Estes, who has been on the show a few times in years past, and I’m very happy to have her back. Dr. Estes is an Addiction Therapist and Life Coach, and perhaps we can talk a little bit more about addiction, parenting, the culture, and treatment. It is a band practice-shortened broadcast tonight, so in the short second half I want to answer a question posed by The Hollywood Reporter: Are Comedic films dead, and did Netflix kill them? In this episode I had the privilege of talking to Graham Sim at one of his holistic wellbeing spiritual fairs in Waikanae. He has an impressive list of specialties and titles including:  Clinical Hypnotherapist, Psychoanalyst, Business Consultant, Relationship Therapist, Life Coach, Addiction Therapist, Clairvoyant and Master Reiki Healer. He is the founder of GKS Holism which offers a wide range of alternative well-being therapies and services , as well as running many workshops and events in the lower North Island region of New Zealand. This was a super intriguing conversation where we discuss some deep topics and theories on life around compassion, consciousness, ascension, how everything is just energy, personal responsibility, synchronicity, fear and intuition. We discuss aspects of his life story and how he saw spirit as a child, how he escaped his Glaswegian gang life, and became connected or reconnected with his spiritual path or waking up. We veer off into the world of politics, sport and religion, and come back to some practical advice on how to find your truth by stepping out of fear and changing your experiences.
