Preston Moore, K Preston Moore
The Preston Moore: Thoughts, Attitudes & Behaviors podcast is truly amazing. Preston dives fearlessly into touchy and uncomfortable topics, displaying an immense amount of courage. He opens up about his personal quest to be a better human, sharing both his triumphs and failures with sincerity and genuineness. This show breaks the chains and barriers surrounding mental health discussions, tackling it head-on without any sense of taboo. Preston's gift with words is evident throughout each episode, making listeners feel less alone in their own mental health journeys. I highly recommend checking out this exceptional podcast.
One of the best aspects of The Preston Moore podcast is how he fearlessly tackles difficult topics that many shy away from. He brings a refreshing level of openness and honesty to each episode, sharing real stories and saying things that many people think but are afraid to voice. His authenticity creates a relatable environment for listeners, making them feel understood and less alone in their struggles. The practical wisdom and insights he provides are truly valuable.
While it's hard to find any major faults in this podcast, one possible downside may be the occasional lack of variety in the topics covered. Although Preston does a fantastic job delving into mental health issues and addiction, there could be room for more diverse subject matter. However, this is a minor critique when considering the overall quality of the show.
In conclusion, The Preston Moore: Thoughts, Attitudes & Behaviors podcast is an exceptional show that provides insightful content on mental health and personal growth. Through his genuine storytelling and relatable experiences, Preston creates an open dialogue that encourages listeners to reflect on their own lives. His ability to address difficult topics with courage and vulnerability makes this podcast stand out from others in its genre. I highly recommend tuning in to gain valuable insights and perspectives that can truly make a difference in your life.
In this episode, I had the privilege of conducting Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) for the Columbus Police Department in Ohio, as part of a nationwide effort to support our peace officers, fire departments, EMS, crisis teams, corrections departments, sheriff's offices, and other public service agencies dealing with crisis situations. The primary goal of CIT training is to equip first responders with the necessary tools to effectively manage mental health and addiction-related crises, thereby reducing the likelihood of escalating situations resulting in harm due to a lack of awareness regarding individuals' mental and emotional struggles. One of the significant challenges in mental health and addiction education is fostering genuine understanding and empathy toward those grappling with these issues. While many acknowledge the prevalence of mental health and addiction concerns, bridging the gap between awareness and action requires individuals to recognize their own potential for connection with these struggles. In this episode, we delve into the pervasive stigma surrounding mental health and addiction and explore viable solutions. We also examine common misconceptions and errors in our approach to addressing these issues, emphasizing the importance of cultivating empathy and rapport with clients and community members. Furthermore, we tackle strategies for preventing the personalization of professional challenges and stressors, offering insights on maintaining emotional well-being in demanding roles such as parenting, family dynamics, and spousal relationships. Our discussion extends to navigating the spectrum of care options, elucidating distinctions between coaching, counseling, therapy, inpatient treatment, outpatient services, and stabilization interventions. For organizations seeking comprehensive mental health and addiction prevention training, CIT or Crisis Intervention Training, as well as guidance on engaging with available services proactively, I offer my expertise as a professional mental health and addiction speaker and advocate. Drawing from my own journey of long-term recovery, I specialize in bridging the gap between organizational practices, familial dynamics, and relationship dynamics, and evidence-based approaches to mental health and addiction prevention. If your organization or community group could benefit from tailored training or support in navigating these critical issues, I am here to facilitate that process. Also, if you're ever looking for a professional speaker around mental health and addiction recovery, drug and alcohol prevention, how to get employees to utilize human resources more often, professional development within schools, universities, police departments, fire departments, probation organizations, the department of correction, or any other organization that prioritizes mental health and addiction stigma. Knowing versus doing. There are so many things that I know what to do, I know I should do, I maybe even want to do, however I have a problem actually doing them. Take for example eating better. I know what to do, I even want to do it, But deep down I am unwilling to take action. I actually feel like something is being taken away from me when it comes to eating better. It doesn't make logical sense but that's what it feels like. Knowing isn't enough because it's the doing that matters. The other thing I talk about in this episode is the value of support groups. Often we can hide in one on one counseling. In other words, I don't have to be as exposed when I'm not in a group. The value of support groups are that I can go deeper faster, I build connection and community with others, when other people share it's as if I'm sharing as well, I don't feel so alone, and lastly, I have an opportunity to help others. If you've ever considered finding a support group I believe it's one of the most under utilize resources that we have at our fingertips and the good thing is, most of them are totally free or very low cost. If you like this episode be sure to share it with your friends. Also, if you're ever looking for a professional speaker around mental health and addiction recovery, drug and alcohol prevention, how to get employees to utilize human resources more often, professional development within schools and universities, and also Encouraging students to start their personal development path. In the recent episode of "Dad Saves America" titled "How Dads Can Harness the Force," something struck a chord with me. Our guest delved into the topic of masks, specifically those worn by characters in Star Wars. It got me thinking about the stark contrast between who we are when we're "in character" and the person we become when we remove the mask. A mentor once told me about his aspiration to be the same person behind closed doors as he was in public. At the time, I didn't fully grasp the significance of his words, but now it all makes sense. I strive to embody authenticity, regardless of who's watching or not. But here's the thing: many of us don't even realize we're wearing masks, myself included. So, let me ask you: What masks do you find yourself wearing? Are there aspects of your behavior or the way you present yourself that you wish to change when nobody's looking? It's a challenging endeavor, but one worth exploring. I would love to hear from you. So often I hear that if you want to make an impact in your community or if you wanna be successful, you must have a mission. Coming up with a mission has been a struggle for me. I've often found myself writing things that I thought sounded good, or that I thought you thought would be impactful. I feel like I have turned a corner in this area. My mission? I often get caught up in black-and-white thinking. For example, am I consistent or am I not? Am I good or bad? Do I eat healthy or not? I've been listening a lot to Jesse Hitler, who is such a high performer and super consistent. The thing is is that I am consistent in some areas and inconsistent and others on this episode I talk about what I do well in where I want to improve. I literally stood behind the door waiting for Eric Thomas to enter the room. I showed up 30 minutes early hoping to catch him walking in to give his motivational speech, and it worked. Eric Thomas is one of my favorite, motivational speakers. I listen to his album, Dr. Thomas before every talk I GIF. I'm also a student of Jeremy Anderson, one of Eric‘s students in mentees for speaking. I love their messaging, and most importantly, I love meeting people I look up to. On this episode, I also talk about Gary Vaynerchuk's veecon, a Conference around his animated characters, called veefriends. I got to see Jesse Itzler, Drew, Barrymore, Guy, Raz, Dave Meltzer, and Andrew short. What a great experience. Seek, and he will reveal himself to you. I was having a conversation last night about God as I understand him and how I got there. It reminded me of an aha moment I had looking at the back of a T-shirt. It's interesting how something so simple can be so profound and still be with me today. I love talking about universal concepts like love, compassion, understanding, honesty, humility, service to others, and integrity. The moment we start debating about who said what, or what book it came from or what was first we start creating division, enemies, and how we are different instead of brings us together, which is how we are in the same. I recently heard this song, who I am by Wyn Starks. He was on America's got talent and boy was he good. More specifically, the lyrics took me back. For me, it was about being the same person behind closed doors as I am in public. To do the work to not feel like who I am isn't enough. so often the roots of our struggles are never discovered. So often people are grasping for strategies or hacks to avoid, or to overcome, or not suffer from whatever is ailing them. Instead, we should be digging down deep into the roots of where they came from, of what we believe about ourselves, and where they started. I'd love to hear from you. Have you ever received advice early in your career or life that you later regretted following? Well, on the latest episode of The Diary of a CEO, our host asks Dr. Philip Ovadia, a heart surgeon and author of the book Stay Off My Operating Table, that very question. And Dr. Philip's response may surprise you. He wishes he hadn't followed the advice of "staying in his lane" early on in his career. It's a perfect example of how having diverse experiences in different cultures, protocols, and strategies can make you better at what you do. You may be a specialist in a particular area, but having a broad range of knowledge and experience can make you more well-rounded and ultimately better at your specialty. But what about following your passion? It can be a confusing concept, can't it? I know I've struggled with it myself. I used to think that if something wasn't fun or didn't interest me, then I shouldn't pursue it. But Dr. Philip's story has reinforced to me the value of learning by doing, even if I didn't necessarily love it at first. So, what's some advice you've been given that you wish you hadn't followed? It's a question worth pondering, and one that we explore in this thought-provoking episode of The High Cost of Anonymity Podcast. We would always love to hear what you think. On this podcast episode, we explore common statements like, "I can't pursue my dreams because of my mental health" or "I can't overcome addiction because of my circumstances." We delve into the root cause of these issues, which is often linked to how we handle our emotions when faced with stress, fear, sadness, and grief. Mental health struggles, addiction, dysfunctional relationships, and workplace stress are often symptoms of deeper emotional issues related to how we perceive ourselves and behave. Anxiety is often driven by a deep-rooted fear of the uncertain future, while regret and shame stem from feeling a lack of control over the past. Addictions can be coping mechanisms for underlying fears and uncertainties. Focusing on the symptoms can make it harder to solve the problem long-term. To overcome these issues, we recommend seeking help from a coach, counselor, therapist, or attending peer-led support groups regularly over an extended period. It takes time to see if a solution works, and it's normal to feel uncomfortable or egotistical when starting something new and productive. However, with practice, it can become easier and something to look forward to. We would love to hear from you. In this podcast episode, we explore the idea of "winning in the dark" as introduced by Eric Thomas, a motivational speaker and life coach. Thomas emphasizes that to achieve success and set oneself apart from others, it's crucial to put in the hard work behind closed doors, without any fanfare, pat on the back, or paycheck. Winning in the dark means doing all the necessary tasks when no one is watching, and there is no immediate gratification. However, this is easier said than done, and many of us struggle to discipline ourselves in certain areas of our lives. In this episode, I share some of my own struggles with self-discipline and explore some of the reasons behind procrastination. Join us as we delve deeper into the concept of winning in the dark and discover how to cultivate the self-discipline necessary to achieve success in all areas of our lives. Are you struggling to put a name to the emotions you're experiencing? It's a challenge many of us face, without even realizing it. We assume we know how we feel, until life throws us a curveball. When we're faced with major milestones, like the loss of a loved one, marriage, childbirth, or graduation, we're suddenly aware that we don't always understand our own emotions. We may try to force ourselves to feel a certain way, even when it doesn't ring true. But there's hope. By putting in the work to become more in tune with our feelings, we can learn to navigate life's ups and downs with more clarity and authenticity. In this episode, I share some insight into my own journey of self-discovery, exploring how I learned to experience sadness, happiness, joy, and fear in a more meaningful way. It wasn't always easy, but the effort was worth it. I feel grateful for the ability to feel my emotions more often, even when it's uncomfortable. We'd love to hear your thoughts on this episode. The tendency in relationships is to blame the other person for how we feel. The problem with that perspective is we have zero control over others without some variation of manipulation, attempt at control, or trying to manage the unmanageable. One of my mentors would say, solutions seeks its own level. And when I change me, everyone else must change in order to deal with me. So if I want to make meaningful changes in my life, or in my relationships, I must look in the mirror. I would love to connect. Some of you know I've been on a mission for the last couple of years to get in touch with my emotions. Specifically, all the ones I've wanted to avoid most of my life like sadness, grief, and anger. Some strategies I have used are ACA 12-step meetings, EMDR therapy, IFS therapy, inner child work, MKP integration groups, meditation, journaling, and especially, intensive men's work weekends. I have turned a corner in the last few months and I would attribute it to 90 days of daily visualization meditation in the morning. It seems to have unlocked all the inner work I've been doing. I cry almost every day. A good cry, all touching on feelings and memories I have forgotten about for years. What is significant about that is, just this morning, I imagined myself having a new life mission. To get workshops like this one into every school, university, counseling office, department of corrections, probation department, and community. When I thought the thought and visualized it while in deep meditation, I started crying and said to myself... "that's way too big of a mission!". That dream scares the crap out of me but I want to give it some light and see where it goes. This workshop is part of a multi-part series about normalizing mental health and addiction services, basic mental health level of care education, and how to get into the prevention business instead of waiting for our families and friends to get sick and in crisis before we help them. We recorded the workshop at a teachers, counselors, and corrections conference. If you know someone, a group, conference, school, or organization that would benefit from something like this, please pass it along! You can find us at. There's this thing in marketing that is super attractive. It's called the sizzle of the “quick fix”. And this is especially true personal development. So many people are selling the quick fix to changing a habit, the quick fix to changing your life, or the quick fix to getting everything you desire. How do I know this? Well, I have tried a lot of them lol! Because boy does a quick and easy fix sound attractive! In my experience, what works best is doing the things on a daily basis that help me stay in the moment and leaving the results to a power that is beyond my understanding. On this episode I share an update on my 90 day meditation challenge. I want you to pay attention to how I'm feeling during the challenge as opposed to the tangible results. I would love for you to join me, let me know what you think. Here are some of the meditations I'm using. On this episode I share some of the huge realizations I've had in just a few days of consistent meditation and visualization. Also I talk about a huge milestone in my recovery and my experience with Lewis Howes' event, the summit of greatness. Lastly, I want to turn you on to one of the biggest savages in childhood trauma work, recovery, and family dysfunction. The gentleman I'm talking about is called John Bradshaw. He has a great YouTube series called “the homecoming”, he's written a ton of books, and he's responsible for opening the door to Brené Brown's work on shame. I'll leave a link in the description for you to check it out. As always, I would love to connect with you. Some really cool things are happening in my life currently and I'm ready for another commitment. Often, my instinct is to fear what could happen. Whether that shows up as self-doubt, financial insecurity, or waiting for the other shoe to drop. It's hard to even admit this because what's also true is I know things are going to work out and I often see the positive in many situations. On this episode I share a few updates about a vacation home, two new paid for speaking gigs, and my new 90 day commitment. In the meantime, here's a question. Is there anything you would like to commit to for the next 90 days to see what happens? Let me know what you think. One of the things I have found super impactful in my area is speaking to all levels of the criminal justice system. Lately, I have had opportunities to speak to probation departments, special docket courts, the department of corrections, at police department trainings, (alcohol, drug addiction, and mental health) ADAMH board events, and drug and alcohol rehabs. This is a presentation I did on zoom for one of our local agencies. NOTE: I do talk about the hospital I work for. Have you ever wondered what it takes to develop a long term healthy habit? I've heard all kinds of claims like, do something for 28 days or 66 days or 90 days in a row and you will have cemented a new habit into your life. Well, how in the hell could one cheese ball knock me off my rocker so easily!? This is a story that hits close to home, especially for those that struggle with addictive behavior. It is also prevalent in other lifestyles like working out, meditation practices and definitely around food. On this episode, I share one more example of how I wasn't just unlucky, or immature for just experimenting when it comes to extreme behavior as a young man. This type of behavior shows up for me over and over and over again. Let me know what you think. The idea of openly and vulnerably sharing a struggle with a group of strangers, then having one of them hand you phone numbers of two other strangers, then calling those strangers and having a long conversation with them about those struggles seems foreign to the vast majority of people. However, that is exactly what happens in many volunteer-based, peer lead support groups… And I wish more people utilized these free resources. On this episode, I share a real life experience with struggle, arrogance, humility, and willingness. I would love to hear what you think about it. I had a sponsor that would say, if you never get away from the basics, you'll never have to get back to the basics. Although, it makes a lot of sense, I just ain't that smart, lol! There is a lot of value in trying new things, having new experiences, and experimenting with new modalities. However, what happens for me is, when I get too far off of what has been working for a large portion of my adult life, I can find myself lost. This episode is about some experiences that I've had recently and my desire to get back to the basics. In most cultures we've lost the initiation ritual that was once prevalent in many of our culture's past, the transition from boyhood to manhood. An initiation from childhood to adulthood. This weekend I participated in the mankind project's new warrior weekend and boy was it tough, rejuvenating, intense, and magical. This episode is about that ritual and the hard work I did rewriting the story that I'm not strong enough. A story I've been caring around since childhood. Although it's still around, I have moved in a direction to free myself to be the man, the father, and the husband that I dream of. Many of you have heard me talk about the “Normalizing” mental wellness and addiction talk I've been working on. This episode is the recording from the workshop I gave at a local treatment facility. I enjoyed that environment because I got to talk a little more about the addiction side however, the message is extremely important for community groups, schools, employers, treatment centers and corrections. If we really want to normalize and desigmatize mental health and addiction, we have to stop talking so much about mental health and addiction. What we need to focus on is mental and emotional wellness, i.e. how do I handle my emotions when I'm stressed, under pressure, or squeezed. Also, we must address the family and community dysfunction vs just trying to help the person that struggles the most. We must normalize the basics for the masses. Basic counseling, basic coaching, basic peer lead support groups versus waiting till someone is classified with a mental health diagnosis or addiction before we start helping. If you are a member of a community group, parent group, church, school, employer, or any other group that would like a workshop like this, I would love to connect. I've had some great experiences over the last couple of weeks. Particularly, I went to a conference in Minneapolis where I met some new friends in recovery, was on a recovery podcast, and met a ton of people, including Garyvee, at VeeCon. What I kept circling back to was, inferiority. When I'm not centered, when I'm not operating from my best self, when I'm disconnected from who I am, I want to be you. I default into, I'm not smart enough, good enough, fast enough, entrepreneurial enough, motivated enough. You name it and I tell myself that. On this episode, I talk about what I do when I get into this mode of thinking and I give some updates on the past couple of weeks. Do you ever find yourself blaming other people for something you are insecure about? I talked about this quite often which is, the tendency to blame you for my feelings. The other day, my wife and I got into an argument because some of my insecurities were being triggered. I have this image seared in my head about not being spoiled, so I'm hypersensitive to what I view as other people being spoiled. I feel a responsibility to not be difficult, so I blame you for being difficult. I have a tendency to put your needs a head of mine because ultimately I don't feel worthy enough to have my needs prioritized. The other thing it reminds me of is what Melody Beatty describes as the universe teaching us with mirrors. Do you have anything in your life that is really triggering that you don't realize you might need to look in the mirror? Often I find things hard to diagnose because I'm focused on the wrong thing. Whether it's me talking to someone else about their problems or me trying to diagnose my own, I'm often wayyyyy off! So now what? Where do we start? The easiest suggestion is to just start… And don't stop until it becomes a regular part of your life. By then, you won't want to quit anyway LOL! I've done a good amount of speaking in my life. As an adult, speaking, training, and coaching is always what I've dreamed of doing. However, I never really found the talk or had the guts to go after it full force. In other words, I've put a lot of content together but it always felt like someone else's talk, someone else's point of view… as if I was parroting someone else's info. Last week I gave a talk at a local community group and not only did it go well but I knew I was onto something. The workshop was about asking yourself the question, “ could our family history have anything to do with what's going on in our house today”? Also, I coupled that with what a mental wellness plan might look like. If we are to move the needle to normalize mental health and addiction we have to normalize the basic for the most amount of people possible. I heard a speaker share recently, the scar won't kill you but the the infection will! What a great metaphor for those things we are struggling with internally that keep us sick. The scar represents your story, your triumph, your message of hope that people crave to hear. Very similar to this podcast, if people don't know you're in recovery, how do they know they can ask you about it? If people don't know you've overcome hard things in life, how are they supposed to know they can ask you for help? People need to hear your message of hope, and it's your responsibility to work through the hard shizzz so you have one to share. I've struggled with pursuing the things I'm most passionate about for a long time. I've said for 20 years I want to teach, train, and coach professionally. Essentially, I'd like to provide for my family as a professional speaker. Yet, every time I step out to pursue that, there's a part of me that says, who do you think you are? who are you to turn your back on how you were raised? who are you to want to have fun at work? There's something deeply ingrained in me that says, work is supposed to be hard and you're not supposed to like it. Yet, when I'm in that mode, everything in me wants to rebel and do the opposite. Hence, my lack of productivity and beating myself up for it. On this episode, I share about my last counseling session and what I'm learning about two contradictory parts of me. The hard-working, keep your head down, show'r up'r, and the creative, ambitious, performer that I dream of being. What parts of you seem to contradict each other? We had a dinner group the other night where we talked more about submitting. It was in the context of submitting to one's partner but the topic evolved for me a bit. When I am in self, I don't want to submit to anyone, I want to drive home my agenda, I keep score, I stay concerned with what's in it for me. When I'm spiritually connected I don't keep score, I don't have to get my way, I'm often OK getting the short end of the stick. Ultimately, because I trust the process and I trust that everything is going to work out in my favor. It's funny when I think back to all the things I thought couldn't be worse. In retrospect everything worked out better than I can imagine. That's how I know I'm spiritually connected… I trust the process! This week our pastor talked about submitting to your partner. The line I always heard was, wives submit to your husbands. However, Patrick talked quite a bit about submitting to each other and as a husband being willing to die for your wife and family. A lot of topics out of that book make my eyes roll and my skin crawl however there is a lot I can learn from that old a$$ book. Let me know what you think about this interpretation. I also talk about another fun topic, finding out your daughter is a lesbian as a conservative Christian. I share some thoughts on the interview I heard by Preston Sprinkles on YouTube. As I'm scrolling on TikTok I come across live videos of the Russian invasion of Ukrainian. Most of the people don't even seem to agree with what's going on. Before, we could only get our information on the major media outlets in now we're able to get a Glimpse of humanness on social media… it makes it feel so different. There is also the part of being older and having a family that makes it so much more emotional. It's crazy what people are dealing with today. Have you noticed anything different about this war? I attended a men's group yesterday and I found myself talking about not only resisting the things that make me feel better but also resenting them as well. I have a tendency to set goals or to make a commitment and then I eventually resent that I have to do it… because I made the commitment. Talk about running in circles. Is there anything that is positive in your life that you resist and resent? Be sure to share it with us. I find it odd that I resist the things that I benefit from. There are a number of things that make me feel better when I do them. Yet, when it comes to doing them, I resist. Everything in my body says no, it's too much work, wouldn't you rather do something else, and my favorite, I'll for sure do it later! Then, the day goes by and I say never mind, I'll do it tomorrow. On this episode, I share some of the areas in which I've kept my commitments and where I'm falling short. If you know someone that would benefit from this podcast, be sure to share it with them and ass always we would love a written review and rating on your favorite podcast platform. Family dynamics can be complicated, especially when it comes to parenting, relationshiping, and in-laws. In this episode I talk about our big a$$, rambunctious German Shepherd and trying to integrate him into the family with a small child. Oh yeah, and me losing my shiz, LOL! If you know someone that would benefit from here in a podcast like this, be sure to share it with them. Also we would love a written review on Apple podcast or Spotify. A couple of great topics from the meeting last night, parenting and why the fourth step seems so scary. Parenting has been the most challenging thing I've ever done and one of the biggest sources of shame, guilt, and regret. Mainly around the fear of screwing my kid up and around falling short or losing my temper. Ultimately, everything works out better than I can imagine but boys is scary. As far as the force step, there's often a big fear involved. The idea of sharing all of my secrets with someone else can be terrifying for people. However, in my experience, it's more about getting honest with myself and building community in connection with people. The first step doesn't have to be scary but it takes work. If you know someone if it from here in this podcast, be sure to share it with them. We would also love a written review on Apple podcast or Spotify. Sarah and I have been going to church for the very first time. And when I say, the very first time, I mean us willingly going to church for ourselves as adults. There are so many great things I get from church, like hearing a great message that makes me think and feel a type of way, meeting new people, and being a part of a community. And yet there are always a couple of topics that are sticking points. When they are brought up, I cringe. I'm wondering, how does one resolve the issue? On one hand I think, good for you for having an opinion and on the other hand I think how do you still have this opinion, lol! Let me know if you have any experience with this and if you could help me resolve the disconnect I feel. At some point I always find myself here on though questions. These just happen to be around church.
