POPULARITY
In this episode, Sunny Chen joins Will and Karen to discuss the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode 'Angel One', focusing on its themes of gender dynamics, feminism, and leadership. They explore how the portrayal of a matriarchal society reflects contemporary issues of gender politics and the challenges women face in leadership roles. The conversation also touches on the B-plot involving a pandemic on the Enterprise, drawing parallels between the two storylines and the underlying fears that drive societal behaviors.
Are you ready for an episode that is a study on the matriarchy vs the patriarchy? Well you won't be getting that from the episode we are discussing. In this episode of Holodeck Divas we discuss the Star Trek - The Next Generation episode "Angel One" (s1e14). The crew of the Enterprise are looking for a lost freighter and they find a planet ruled by women. At the same time there is suddenly a virus that contaminates the entire ship. Where does the disease come from? Also what color is Riker's nipple supposed to be? Listen to hear what the divas have to say!
Leonard Crofoot (Trent) joins us for this review and discussion of TNG's "Angel One"! When the Enterprise visits a matriarchal society while looking for survivors from a Federation freighter, they find themselves in the middle of a gender revolution. But when the survivors refuse to leave, Trent's Angels sentence them to death. How hard is it for a society to adapt? How hard is Riker in Mistress Beata's bed? Welcome to CNBC-TV18's Marketbuzz Podcast. Here are top developments from around the world ahead of the trading session of January 14 -Sensex on January 13 cracked over 1,000 points to dive below the 77,000 level, tracking heavy selling in global equities and a spike in international crude prices. The NSE Nifty dropped 345 points or 1.5% to close at 23,085. A strong US jobs data erasing early rate cut expectations, the rupee logging its steepest single-day fall in nearly two years and unabated foreign fund outflows also dampened investors' sentiment. -The real pain was felt in the broader markets on Friday and Monday was an extension of that. Both the Midcap and Smallcap indices fell 4% each on Monday with multiple stocks now having corrected between 20% to 40% from their peaks. In just the last six trading sessions, the Midcap index is down 9%, while the Smallcap index has gone one better, declining 11%. -Nagaraj Shetti of HDFC Securities believes that the underlying trend of the Nifty remains weak and the index is now headed lower towards its next support zone between 22,800 - 22,700 levels. Any pullback towards 23,350 could be a selling opportunity. -The GIFT Nifty was higher this morning, trading at a premium of more than 100 pints from Nifty Futures Monday close, indicating a gap-up start for the Indian market. -Stocks to watch: HCLTech, United Spirits, JSW Energy, Quess Corp, Angel One, Delta Corp, Anand Rathi Wealth -Global cues: The dollar fell against almost every major currency after Bloomberg News reported that Donald Trump's incoming economic team is considering gradual hikes in tariffs. The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index dropped as much as 0.4% in early Asia trading Tuesday, after a report showed Trump's economic advisors are discussing a slow and steady approach to tariffs, rather than a large one-time increase. -Oil prices slipped at market open this morning but remained near four-month highs as Chinese and Indian buyers sought new suppliers in the wake of the Biden administration's toughest sanctions yet on Russian oil. Brent futures slipped 0.27% to $80.79 a barrel. -Asia-Pacific markets traded mixed this morning after a mixed session on Wall Street that saw the Dow soar and the Nasdaq slip as investors rotated out of tech stocks. -Overnight in the U.S., the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed, outperforming the market, while the Nasdaq Composite slipped as traders continued to sell off major tech stocks that have powered the bull market. -Investors will continue monitoring India's rupee after it weakened to a record low against the U.S. dollar. India on Monday reported inflation data for December, which declined for a second straight month year on year, coming in just below expectations at 5.22% and boosting the case for prospective interest rate cuts. Welcome to Top of the Morning by Mint, your weekday newscast that brings you five major stories from the world of business. It's Thursday, December 19, 2024. This is Nelson John, let's get started. Adar Poonawalla's recent dive into Bollywood, in which he snagged a 50% stake in Karan Johar's Dharma Productions for a cool ₹1,000 crore, isn't just a one-off. It hints at a bigger potential shift across Bollywood. Poonawalla, known best for producing vaccines, teaming up with a giant like Dharma Productions could just set off a trend. Industry insiders weren't taken aback by this development, as Dharma had been actively seeking fresh funding amid a string of less-than-stellar box office returns and cooling interest from streaming platforms. Before Poonawalla stepped in, giants such as Saregama and Reliance Industries were also in the running, highlighting the attractiveness of film studios as potential investment opportunities for diverse business conglomerates. This move could encourage more such strategic investments, writes Lata Jha. It could also reshape how Bollywood studios align themselves with broader business interests, potentially leading to a wave of revitalisation that could impact content creation, distribution and marketing strategies across the industry.Despite allegations of anti-competitive practices by Zepto, Instamart and Blinkit, the Competition Commission of India is unlikely to launch an investigation into quick commerce companies. Sources told Dhirendra Kumar and Gireesh Chandra Prasad that the information provided to CCI didn't convince them there was any anti-competitive behaviour that warranted further examination. This booming sector, projected to hit $6 billion in sales by 2024, seems too competitive and beneficial to consumers for the CCI to take action on its own. Meanwhile, concerns persist among traditional retailers, represented by the All-India Consumer Products Distributors Federation. They claim the platforms' allegedly predatory pricing and inadequate enforcement of FDI rules could threaten traditional retailers, and are urging a closer look to prevent potential monopolistic outcomes.Sebi's tightening of rules in India's F&O market aims to cool intense retail trading driven by expectations of quick profits and the gamification tactics of brokerages. Measures such as increasing index contract sizes to ₹15-20 lakh and adding a steep 14% loss margin for contract sales on expiry days kicked in on November 20. More rules such as upfront collection of option premiums by brokerages are expected to take effect in February 2025. For retail investors, these higher barriers mean trading in F&O will require more money and a deeper understanding of the markets—essentially pushing out those looking for quick, easy profits. Brokerages, particularly discount ones such as Zerodha and Angel One, could take a hit to their bottom lines as reduced volumes will force them to rethink pricing or diversify their services. Abhinanda Saha takes a look at this new era in India's F&O market. In India, companies are stepping up their game on diversity hiring for roles ranging from software development to mechanical engineering. They're not just looking to fill positions – they're trying to show they're progressive and uphold strong corporate governance. From big names such as Robert Bosch GmbH and IBM Corp to Noida's Coforge Ltd, there's a growing trend of including people from diverse backgrounds, including those who are differently abled. For example, over at R.V. College of Engineering in Bengaluru, they've already recruited 26 students under diversity categories this year. This push towards diversity isn't just about doing good; it's also about looking good, reports Jas Bardia. Companies are increasingly aware that strong diversity practices boost their brand and appeal to investors who value robust environmental, social and governance (ESG) standards. This is in stark contrast to the US, where some big companies and universities are pulling back on their diversity initiatives, wary of running afoul of anti-discrimination laws.TVS Credit is in talks to buy Avendus Capital from KKR, aiming to boost its financial services, sources told Ranjani Raghavan. It's considering funding the purchase through internal accruals and may consider debt later. KKR, which invested $120 million in Avendus in 2015, appointed Rothschild after Nomura withdrew from facilitating the sale. Avendus, known for its strong investment banking and startup advisory services, could be valued between $500 and $700 million for a 70% stake. Serious bidders include Mizuho and Carlyle, but a final decision is likely to be pushed to January owing to the holidays. A successful bid could significantly expand TVS's financial-sector footprint, adding investment banking and asset management to its portfolio.
In this episode of Market Minutes, Vaibhavi Ranjan talks about the key factors to watch out for today before the Indian market opens. Bulls staged a comeback in the previous session as the benchmarks finally managed to hold on to the day's gains by close. Earnings will continue to trigger stock specific moves, with HCLTech, Angel One and Macrotech Developers being in focus today. Market Minutes is a morning podcast that puts the spotlight on hot stocks, key data points, and developing trends.

Star Trek: The Next Generation, Series 1, Episode 14. First broadcast on Monday 25 January 1988. Nothing to learn about gender politics this week as we visit Angel One, where large aggressive women lord it over their twinky male consorts, and Star Trek: The Next Generation finds plenty of exciting new ways to be as offensively sexist as possible. Could someone pass Gene a napkin, please?

Made in Ukraine Tech Startup Edition, interviews with top Ukrainian entrepreneurs
Angel One is a recently launched venture fund for UKrainian tech startups offered by the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv, Ukraine. Managing Partner Ivan Petrenko discusses how and why the fund was started and what its plans are for investment. https://sifted.eu/articles/ukrainian-university-fund-spinouts/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/ivan-petrenko-070299172/
Welcome to Watchers of Tomorrow! A podcast where we go through the world of science fiction television episode by episode, talking about the themes, concepts, ideas, the good, the bad, and the weird. We are great fans of sci-fi and would like to invite you on our journey through the funky and strange worlds that we are to explore… Today's episode: What do you get when an episode kind of fails to convey an allegory? It conveys a different, much worse one! Or at least Angel One does. Also, there's a kind of pointless series of plots happening on the ship that kind of don't need to be there. The return of ANNIE! Welcome back to the #CaptainsQuadrant where we talk about the worst of #StarTrek this #NextGeneration episode Angel one where Annie comes back and joins us to suffer there the worst episodes of Trek!
Star Trek: The Next Generation analysis of season 1 episode 13 (Angel One) Hoo boi, this episode was fucking BORING. Despite that, we managed to have a lot of fun recapping and analyzing this snoozefest. We spend most of the analysis portion of the show talking about the irresponsibility and laziness of the "reverse oppression" trope - how it usually serves to excuse hierarchies and abuse of power, obfuscate how and why power structures were created in the first place, and typically reinforce the objectification and dehumanization of those who are actually oppressed. We also discuss all the missed opportunities to let the female cast members have center stage - ironic that in an episode about matriarchy, all the women were completely sidelined

Trauma. When you love an addict or an alcoholic, you can experience many, many circumstances, which really can be quite traumatic. Whether it's a big trauma or a series of small traumas, which can take place over years, it has an impact on us mentally, emotionally, and physically. Trauma can get stuck in your body and to really recover, we need to unwind and release all of that trauma. So how do we do this? Christine is going tell us how. If there is one word that I would use to describe Christine, there's actually so many I could use, but the one that's at the top of the list is resilient. Christine is an author. She has written the book called Blinded by an Angel, which is her story. Christine has been a keynote speaker at mental health conferences, hospitals, addiction facilities, yoga studios, and universities, where she's openly has shared her story of resilience. Her story reached thousands of people in 2018. When she was featured in Canadian living magazine. She's also been a mentor to many in the field of addiction and recovery. She specializes in trauma informed yoga and is also the coauthor of clinical research gathered on residential treatment programs. If you have been traumatised or have held trauma in your body for a very long time, you haven't connected physically with your body. And so there's some neglect there. And the reason you probably haven't is because you don't want to feel. You have to feel the heal. Listen to the full episode to find out how. A journey that started 33 years ago has resulted in a company that does over Rs. 1250 Cr in revenue and has a public market cap of more than 10,000 Crs. This is the story of Mr. Dinesh Thakkar, CMD of Angel Broking. Before we start, let;s define a stock broker. These are entities that act as the middlemen between stock buyers and the stock exchange. And that's how Mr. Dinesh Thakkar started his career back in 1998. This was a time that the stock market was extremely small and so were the number of players participating in it. As popularized by the show Scam 1992, the market was also open to being rigged by a few powerful players. For 9 years, he learnt the ropes as a stock broker and saw the industry go through the tough phase of early 1990's. As the market was getting bigger, so were its participants, and in order to serve the new market participants, Mr. Thakkar set up Angel Broking in 1996.Leveraging new age technology and the ability to take long term strategic bets have been a key reason for the success that Angel Broking has had. The company has seen major transformations from introduction of real-time trading over computers to trading over mobile apps. The company has evolved with the times and continued to expand into new business verticals to create this behemoth today. As the company reaches it's 25th Anniversary, it's laying the foundation for next decade's growth. Considering that only 5% of Indians invest in Equity, the headroom for growth is still quite huge. And to capture this market, Angel Broking is being rebranded to Angel One with a bigger focus on customer education and helping them end to end.We talk to Mr. Thakkar about his journey of building Angel Broking, his thoughts on technology, customer centricity and building a sustainable organisation. Before we jump into the episode, please take a moment to drop us a review on Apple!
